oduction Sacred Geometry Introductory Tutorial by Bruce Rawles In nature, we find patterns, designs and structures from the most minuscule particles, to expressions of life discernible by human eyes, to the greater cosmos. These inevitably follow geometrical archetypes, which reveal to us the nature of each form and its vibrational resonances. They are also symbolic of the underlying metaphysical principle of the inseparable relationship of the part to the whole. It is this principle of oneness underlying all geometry that permeates the architecture of all form in its myriad diversity. This principle of interconnectedness, inseparability and union provides us with a continuous reminder of our relationship to the whole, a blueprint for the mind to the sacred foundation of all things created. The Sphere (charcoal sketch of a sphere by Nancy Bolton-Rawles) Starting with what may be the simplest and most perfect of forms, the sphere is an ultimate expression of unity, completeness, and integrity. There is no point of view given greater or lesser importance, and all points on the surface are equally accessible and regarded by the center from which all originate. Atoms, cells, seeds, planets, and globular star systems all echo the spherical paradigm of total inclusion, acceptance, simultaneous potential and fruition, the macrocosm and microcosm. The Circle The circle is a two-dimensional shadow of the sphere which is regarded throughout cultural history as an icon of the ineffable oneness; the indivisible fulfillment of the Universe. All other symbols and geometries reflect various aspects of the profound and consummate perfection of the circle, sphere and other higher dimensional forms of these we might imagine. The ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, Pi, is the original transcendental and irrational number. (Pi equals a b o u t 3.1415926535897932384626433832795028841971693993751 1…) It cannot be expressed in terms of the ratio of two whole numbers, or in the language of sacred symbolism, the essence of the circle exists in a dimension that transcends the linear rationality that it contains. Our holistic perspectives, feelings and intuitions encompass the finite elements of the ideas that are within them, yet have a greater wisdom than can be expressed by those ideas alone. The Point At the center of a circle or a sphere is always an infinitesimal point. The point needs no dimension, yet embraces all dimension. Transcendence of the illusions of time and space result in the point of here and now, our most primal light of consciousness. The proverbial “light at the end of the tunnel” is being validated by the ever-increasing literature on so-called “near-death experiences”. If our essence is truly spiritual omnipresence, then perhaps the “point” of our being “here” is to recognize the oneness we share, validating all “individuals” as equally precious and sacred aspects of that one. Life itself as we know it is inextricably interwoven with geometric forms, from the angles of atomic bonds in the molecules of the amino acids, to the helical spirals of DNA, to the spherical prototype of the cell, to the first few cells of an organism which assume vesical, tetrahedral, and star (double) tetrahedral forms prior to the diversification of tissues for different physiological functions. Our human bodies on this planet all developed with a common geometric progression from one to two to four to eight primal cells and beyond. Almost everywhere we look, the mineral intelligence embodied within crystalline structures follows a geometry unfaltering in its exactitude. The lattice patterns of crystals all express the principles of mathematical perfection and repetition of a fundamental essence, each with a characteristic spectrum of resonances defined by the angles, lengths and relational orientations of its atomic components. The new generation possesses the capacity for synthesis, growth, integration and reconciliation of polarities by spanning both perspectives equally. The root of two originating from the square leads to a greater unity, a higher expression of its essential truth, faithful to its lineage.The fact that the root is irrational expresses the concept that our higher dimensional faculties cant always necessarily be expressed in lower order dimensional terms e.g. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. (from the Gospel of St. John, Chapter 1, verse 5). By the same token, we have the capacity to surpass the genetically programmed limitations of our ancestors, if we can shift into a new frame of reference (i.e. neutral with respect to prior axes, yet formed from that matrix-seed conjugation. Our dictionary refers to the word matrix both as a womb and an array (or grid lattice). Our language has some wonderful built-in metaphors if we look for them!The Golden Ratio

    The golden ratio (a.k.a. phi ratio a.k.a. sacred cut a.k.a. golden mean a.k.a. divine proportion) is another fundamental measure that seems to crop up almost everywhere, including crops. (The g o l d e n r a t i o i s a b o u t 1.618033988749894848204586834365638117720309180) The golden ratio is the unique ratio such that the ratio of the whole to the larger portion is the same as the ratio of the larger portion to the smaller portion. As such, it symbolically links each new generation to its ancestors, preserving the continuity of relationship as the means for retracing its lineage.

    The golden ratio (phi) has some unique properties and makes some interesting appearances:

    phi = phi^2 1; therefore 1 + phi = phi^2; phi + phi^2 = phi^3; phi^2 + phi^3= phi^4; ad infinitum.

    phi = (1 + square root(5)) / 2 from quadratic formula, 1 + phi = phi^2.

    phi = the ratio of segments in a 5-pointed star (pentagram) considered sacred to Plato and Pythagoras in their mystery schools. Note that each larger (or smaller) section is related by the phi ratio, so that a power series of the golden ratio raised to successively higher (or lower) powers is automatically generated: phi, phi^2, phi^3, phi^4, phi^5, etc.

  • sequence of leaf patterns as they twist around a branch, and a myriad of places in nature where self-generating patterns are in effect. The sequence is the rational progression towards the irrational number embodied in the quintessential golden ratio.This most aesthetically pleasing proportion, phi, has been utilized by numerous artists since (and probably before!) the construction of the Great Pyramid. As scholars and artists of eras gone by discovered (such as Leonardo da Vinci, Plato, and Pythagoras), the intentional use of these natural proportions in art of various forms expands our sense of beauty, balance and harmony to optimal effect. Leonardo da Vinci used the Golden Ratio in his painting of The Last Supper in both the overall composition (three vertical Golden Rectangles, and a decagon (which contains the golden ratio) for alignment of the central figure of Jesus.The outline of the Parthenon at the Acropolis near Athens, Greece is enclosed by a Golden Rectangle by design.The Square Root of 3 and the Vesica Piscis

    The Vesica Piscis is formed by the intersection of two circles or spheres whose centers exactly touch. This symbolic intersection represents the common ground, shared vision or mutual understanding between equal individuals. The shape of the human eye itself is a Vesica Piscis. The spiritual significance of seeing eye to eye to the mirror of the soul was highly regarded by numerous Renaissance artists who used this form extensively in art and architecture. The ratio of the axes of the form is the square root of 3, which alludes to the deepest nature of the triune which cannot be adequately expressed by rational language alone.Spirals

    This spiral generated by a recursive nest of Golden Triangles (triangles with relative side lengths of 1, phi and phi) is the classic shape of the Chambered Nautilus shell. The creature building this shell uses the same proportions for each expanded chamber that is added; growth follows a law which is everywhere the same. The outer triangle is the same as one of the five arms of the pentagonal graphic above.Toroids

    Rotating a circle about a line tangent to it creates a torus, which is similar to a donut shape where the center exactly touches all the rotated circles. The surface of the torus can be covered with 7 distinct areas, all of which touch each other; an example of the classic map problem where one tries to find a map where the least number of unique colors are needed. In this 3-dimensional case, 7 colors are needed, meaning that the torus has a high degree of communication across its surface. The image shown is a birds-eye view.Dimensionality

  • The progression from point (0-dimensional) to line (1-dimensional) to plane (2-dimensional) to space (3-dimensional) and beyond leads us to the question if mapping from higher order dimensions to lower ones loses vital information (as we can readily observe with optical illusions resulting from third to second dimensional mapping), does our fixation with a 3-dimensional space introduce crucial distortions in our view of reality that a higher-dimensional perspective would not lead us to?Fractals and Recursive Geometries

    There is a wealth of good literature on this subject; its always fascinating how nature propagates the same essence regardless of the magnitude of its expressionour spirit is spaceless yet can manifest aspects of its individuality at any scale.Perfect Right Triangles

    The 3/4/5, 5/12/13 and 7/24/25 triangles are examples of right triangles whose sides are whole numbers. The graphic above contains several of each of these triangles.     The 5 Platonic solids (Tetrahedron, Cube or (Hexahedron), Octahedron, Dodecahedron and Icosahedron) are ideal, primal models of crystal patterns that occur throughout the world of minerals in countless variations. These are the only five regular polyhedra, that is, the only five solids made from the same equilateral, equiangular polygons. To the Greeks, these solids symbolized fire, earth, air, spirit (or ether) and water respectively. The cube and octahedron are duals, meaning that one can be created by connecting the midpoints of the faces of the other. The icosahedron and dodecahedron are also duals of each other, and three mutually perpendicular, mutually bisecting golden rectangles can be drawn connecting their vertices and midpoints, respectively.     Male and Female Aspects in CreationThere are male and female aspects within creation that are so interspersed, so uniform throughout, that it almost defies logic, and yet it is perfectly logical when fully realized in its potential. It is the order within chaos, the law and codes put into place within everything, great and small, so that you cannot look anywhere and not see it. There is a third aspect, besides male and female and from which they came, and that is a unified whole containing both - the male-female combination (an androgyne of sorts)... this is the original Spirit Energy that pervades and permeates all of Creation. Many people who are from matriarchal (female-lead) societies may have issues with the original "Adam" being called a male (predominantly found within patriarchal (male-lead) societies) when "he" had both, so why not called the androgyne a "she" instead? Are they not interchangeable? Yes, and no.... we'll cover more on that later. Realize the "Adam" and the "Eve" are archetypes. We have male and female lions today, with their inherent differences, as well as male and female parts of the plants, many of them being androgynes. Even the original "Adam" was an androgyne... the perfect being created in God's image, having both parts in union within "him."Male and Female in the Microcosm and MacrocosmYou will find BOTH male and female aspects in the macrocosm as well as the microcosm... in ALL things you will find both aspects; although, you will find (as in people) that one will rule over the other, being the majority in either female or male aspects so that you can call it "female" or "male." So as the microcosm contains both, you will also find the main idea is this:microcosm = female (hidden, underlying, quiet or invisible processes)macrocosm = male (obvious, overlying, loud or visible processes)The smallest parts in the universe include atoms. An atom consists of a nucleus, which is made up of protons, neutrons, and the outer electron shell - the electron(s). This microcosm reality is but the type and order established at the base level which the macrocosm copies. This is the order contained naturally within the universe. The pattern from which everything is derived. The intelligence and order behind what some would consider chaos.     Note that the protons (the positively charged parts) are male, the electrons (negatively charged parts) orbiting the nucleus are female, and the neutrons (male-female androgynes) are contained within the nucleus. Because of this, we have a center which is predominately male, consisting of the protons AND the male aspects (which includes the female aspects) of the neutrons. But it is the electrons which provide the movement and change from one form into another. Females, as most males know, are all about change. The old adage is that if a woman feels one way now, just wait 5 minutes and she'll completely change her mind! Interestingly enough, Dr. Bruce Cornet (a geologist, palynologist, paleobotanist, and biologist, not to mention a very dear person to my heart) recently asked me, "If you could sum up what Chemistry is in one sentence what would you call it?" I thought for a minute and was clueless, so I asked him, "What?" His answer was, "Chemistry is the movement of electrons."Chemistry, then, is a feminine process. Interestingly enough, as men are known for status, strength, and ego, women are known for sharing and bonding between people (typically, other females). The interaction of electrons around atoms can result in two or more atoms joining together, a process known as what?..... BONDING. Different females bond differently, depending. If atoms of two or more different elements bond, the resulting substance is a COMPOUND. Most minerals are compounds, although gold, silver, and several others are exceptions. There are several types of bonding, IONIC BONDING, COVALENT BONDING, METALLIC AND VAN DER WAALS BONDING.Ionic bonding is the transference of electrons (one lost by one atom, and one gained by the other atom) between atoms, producing one fewer electron (negative charge) than it has protons (positive charge) so that it becomes an electrically charged particle called an ION. Ionic bonds form because of the attractive force between the positively charged ion and a negatively charged ion. This is giving (a giver and a receiver forms a new bond, but with different charges/status).Covalent bonding forms between atoms when their electron shells overlap and electrons are shared. For example, atoms of the same element, such as oxygen in oxygen gas, cannot bond by transferring electrons from one atom to another, so adjacent atoms share electrons by overlapping their electron shells. This is connection (a combining of both parties forms this type of bond, like between best friends).Metallic bonding results from an extreme type of electron sharing. Electrons of the outmost electron shell of metals such as gold, silver, and copper are readily lost and move about from one atom to another (extreme flexibility/movement of the feminine aspect). This electron mobility accounts for metals' metallic luster (appearance in reflected light - and many women love flashy metal jewelry), their good electrical and thermal conductivity, and their malleability. Only a few minerals possess metallic bonds, but those that do are very useful; copper, for example, is used for electrical wiring because of its high electrical conductivity. Electrical aspects are male (more on that below) so the movement of the feminine aspect actually creates a male conduit of energy due to networking (like a strong business woman who is resourceful and sharp and perfectly at ease in a male dominated society). This is the strongest form of bonding.Van der Waals bonding or residual bonding between some electrically neutral (androgenous) atoms and molecules have no electrons available for ionic, covalent, or metallic bonding. They nevertheless have a weak attractive force between them when in proximity. For example, carbon atoms in the mineral graphite covalently bond to form sheets, but the sheets are weakly held together by van der Waals bonds. This type of bonding in graphite makes it useful for pencil leads; when a pencil is moved across a piece of paper, small pieces of graphite flake off along the planes held together by van der Waals bonds and adhere to the paper. This is the weakest form of bonding.Minerals are made up of atoms bonded together. By definition minerals are crystalline solids in which the constituent atoms are arranged in a regular, three-dimensional framework (more shapes in sacred geometry - cubic, dodecahedron, octahedrons, etc. - the stuff in which our world was formed/created). Not all rigid substances are crystalline solids; natural and manufactured glass both lack the ordered arrangement of atoms and are said to be amorphous, meaning without form (much like "the earth was without form, and void," in the beginning of creation). It took time (more on time later) for the formless to take shape and grow and form.Electricity = Female (paradox: some say this is male)Magnetics = Male (paradox: some say this is female)Electromagnetics = Male-Female (electromagnetics = light - an electric field with a magnetic field moving 90 degrees to this wave, rotating/spiraling as it moves)Within the microcosm there are forces and energies at work continually. Positive and negative charges (as in ions, etc.) constitute electrical charges (electrons are female) which affect magnetics (positive/negative poles - an unseen force within distinct poles). Electromagnetics are a powerful force together, and are, ultimately, and intimately interrelated. The macrocosm mimics the microcosm, or vice versa. Where we have electrons (female) orbiting a nucleus (predominately male (protons) but also having some feminine (male-female neutrons) aspects) in the microcosm, we have planets (female) orbiting a central sun (nucleus - predominately male, but with some lesser female aspects). My greatest teacher and Guru came into my life in 1970. I was thirty years old and suddenly filled with the desire to understand everything.

    L.P. Everything? Do you mean literally?

    C.G. It was as if I had awakened from a foggy dream to discovered a totally new and spiritually intimate universe. Suddenly I was filled with a child-like enthusiasm to really learn. And there he was: someone who seemed to know ALL. It seemed miraculous, and shortly after we discovered one another he told me he had a very specific plan for my esoteric education which I was to follow explicitly. He was teaching me a method of study and convinced me his sequence of learning was imperative. Astrology was not part of that early teaching. I never thought of resisting him because he was my Guru and I trusted him completely. Years later, he told me I would eventually study Astrology and said I would know the appropriate moment. He was exactly right....as ever.

    L.P. That's fascinating. So evidently the time was right and you met Pamela.

    C.G. "Yes, It was amazing....another miracle. By that time I had been studying Sacred Geometry for years and could clearly see its esoteric relationship to Astrology. I realized it was time to begin a dialog with a professional astrologer and a mutual friend introduced us. For me it was love at first sight....powerful chemistry. I found we were both doing essentially the same thing: meditating on Sacred Geometry. I was creating Mandalas and she was creating astrological charts for her clients....a different form of Mandala making.

    One of the most profound aspects of Pamela's work was that she did not use a computer to create her charts. She did them all by hand. The time and focus it took to do that encouraged her to slip into very deep levels of open-eyed Meditation. That intense discipline was one of the things that made her so extraordinary, allowing her oracular talents to flower. I could relate. I was doing the same thing: spending hours and hours in deep meditation with the archetypes of geometry. We were made for one another.....understood one another.     L.P. "Yes, good. I have a question, Charles. How dose it actually work? I mean modern science has no explanation. In fact, most scientists believe Astrology has no validity what so ever. But after all these thousands of years, astrology is more popular than ever. How does it work?"

    C.G. "As ever Leslie, a great first question. Pamela was truly gifted. She totally blew my mind on a regular basis. Through her studies, experience, and her very deep astrological meditations, Pamela was able to see into the heart her clients issues and energies. She gave wise and sensitive consultation. She also regularly made very accurate predictions which seemed magical and consistently stunned a lot of her clients. She would brush her mysterious oracular powers aside, saying: ' I just read the maps....the rhythms and patterns. I see where the person was, and is, and where they're going....that's all. You could say that astrology is a workable system of psychology, facilitaiting self understanding and mental well being. That is the everyday function of Astrology. But to be most effective, Astrology needs gifted practitioners like Pamela, teaching and guiding. That's what Pamela did day to day. She helped people with their dreams and troubles, giving them enlightened and wise council. She was dedicated to the relief of suffering and the expansion of human consciousness; a great teacher by example.     C.G. "It goes right to the first archetypes, Leslie. The astrological system springs directly from The Two Circles Of Common Radius and The Vesica Piscis.L.P. "It see what you are saying, Charles. In ancient times, way before the printing press, anyone would have been able to create a clock like division of the circle with only those simple tools: a compass and straightedge. That is extremely interesting, a great example of natural evolution....just simple logic.

    C.G. "Simple is good, Leslie. Even a small child playing with a little divided twig (used as a compass) could create the first icons of Sacred Geometry in the soft earth. The perfections of Sacred Geometry are so simple and pure."

    L.P."Lets talk about your large Mandala on Astrology, entitled 1-2-3-4-12 (Fig 4). Explain the numbers, Please? Knowing you, there must be some significance."C.G. "Simple, really. Astrology divides The Circle into various parts, one part, two parts, three parts, four parts and twelve parts: 1-2-3-4-12. I left out some of the sub divisions, but you get the idea."

    L.P. "I think I see. talk more about these parts. Tell me about this Mandala."

    C.G. "You tell me, Leslie. What do YOU see?"

    L.P. "OK, we can do it that way. Let me see: it's an acrylic Mandala on canvas, of course, and it seems to be relatively classical in the sense that it makes reference to the four traditional doorways at the four cardinal points. It's about three foot square and there are various overlapping geometries inside; squares and triangles and circles. Of course there are the twelve signs of the zodiac. The radiating aspect is also very strong. Those waving lines at the outside are very energetic.C.G. "Yes, there are 360 of those vibrating lines, Leslie, each representing one degree. Astrology also divides the circle into 360 parts, one of the divisions I left out of the title."

    L.P. "I see that, Charles....very precise. Let's talk about the various parts. What about the twelve parts, or houses as the astrologers call them."

    C.G. "The first two outside circles represent the astrological chart with the twelve houses. The horizontal line in the middle represents Earth's horizon extended into space with the first house (Aries) in its traditional place on the left and just below the horizon. Our planet Earth is in the center with daylight above and darkness below.L.P. "Let me interrupt a little Charles. Skeptics have always criticized Astrology because it places the Earth at the center of the universe. Comment on that point of contention, if you will."

    C.G. "In the astrological sense, the Earth IS the center of the universe, as it relates to the mapping of the movements of the stars. If we lived on the Moon, and were mapping the heavenly bodies, the Moon would then become the center of the universe and the Earth would be that large multi colored world hanging in the black sky. And what a strange astrology that would be. If we lived on the so called dark side of the moon, we would never even see the Earth."

    L.P. "So, you are saying this old criticism of Astrology somehow misses the point?"

    C.G. "Exactly! Some people just will not even try to get it. It's not rocket science. If we lived on Phoebe (the first moon of Saturn) we would still be at the astrological center of the universe and the mapping of the heavenly bodies would be a very bazaar astrology indeed, that huge sphere with its fantastic rings dominating, the sun but a bright dot of light in a black sky and many times completely obscured buy mother Saturn."

    L.P. "All right, let's get back to the astrological chart and its Twelve houses with our Earth as the center of the universe."

    C.G. "Each of the twelve houses is 30 degrees wide and, on our world, represents about two hours, plus or minus. It takes one day (24 hours) for our Earth to rotate through this map of time; and we human beings rotate with it. As pre-birth water creatures, it takes about 270 of these revolutions for us to fully develop in our mothers womb. The moment we draw our first breath we cease to be aquatic beings and are literally on our own as separate individual air breathing organisms. At that moment of first breath, and at that particular place on earth we are born, all the heavenly bodies occupy a very precise position in the astrological chart; and our personal map of life's rhythms begin. The astrological chart associated with our personal moment of birth is called our natal chart, and this is the first tool of the astrologer."

    L.P. "All right, let's continue. What about the next circle of your Mandala. It contains three overlapping squares all touching the outer circle and marking the division of the twelve houses. Each is a different color: Yellow, Red, and Blue. What's that all about?

    C.G. "The Metaphysical system of Astrology divides the universe into three major parts and contemplates these parts as a great mystery. All philosophical systems do the same and assign various theories to this natural Trinity....this Threeness. Of course the Christian tradition calls this cosmic Trinity: The Father, The Son, and The Holy Ghost; but there are numerous points of view. For the Hindu vision of the Great Trinity, we could look to the wondrous caves of Elephanta, India, which holds a colossal bust with three faces; Brahma, the Creator; Vishnu, The Preserver; and Siva the Destroyer. The three manifestations of the Ultimate Reality. Astrology defines the Trinity as: the Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable aspects, or the Spiritual, Material and Mental aspects respectively.

    Three Squares fit perfectly within the twelve houses. The yellow square in this Mandala points to the Cardinal signs: the first house (Aries) the fourth house (Cancer) The seventh house (Libra) and the tenth house (Capricorn). The red square points to the Fixed, or material signs of the zodiac: the second house (Taurus) the fifth house (Leo) the eighth house (Scorpio) and the eleventh house (Aquarius). And the Blue square (the mutable or mental aspect) points to the third house (Gemini) the sixth house (Virgo) the ninth house (Sagittarius) and the twelfth house (Pisces)."

    L.P. "I'm beginning To see, Charles. What about the triangles in the next Circle?"C.G. "Esoteric astrology also sees the cosmos divided into four parts....Fourness, also known as the Four Elements. The ancient words defining the elements are: Fire, Earth, Air, and Water, and four triangles fit perfectly into the twelve houses. The fire signs of the zodiac, in this case represented by the orange triangle, are Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius. The Earth signs are: Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn; the brown triangle. The Air signs are: Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius; the sky blue triangle. And the Water signs are: Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces; represented by the Aqua colored triangle."

    L.P. "Interesting, Charles. I see what you are doing with the three squares and four triangles; but I could never quite figure out this elemental idea of Fire, Earth, Air, and, Water. It seems too simple, almost naive. Can you explain it in a more scientifically appropriate way? Is that possible?"

    C.G. "Of course. Leslie. No metaphysical system is valid unless it can comfortably interrelate with scientific realities. The ancient sages contemplated the Fourness of the universe and came to this scientifically valid conclusions: All manifestations of the universe must, by principle, be composed from at least one of these four elemental qualities: Fire, Earth, Air, or Water. The astrological word Fire, does not just mean the fire we see when a log burns. Elemental Fire really means all radiant energy, the entire spectrum of radiant energy. From this point of view, even radio waves would be considered Elemental Fire. Earth, means all solid forms; the quality of solidity. In this sense, Ice (frozen water) is no longer liquid and is therefore Elemental Earth. The Elemental Air, is not just hydrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide, etc., but all things gaseous or vaporous. Elemental Water is actually actually describing the universal quality of liquidity, all forms of liquidity. From this elemental point of view, the extremely cold liquid hydrogen would be considered Elemental Water, and very hot liquid gold would also be considered Elemental Water."

    This system also points to the possibility, and indeed the probability, that a given thing will change its elemental nature from one form to another. A solid log on fire (Earth) is being transmuted into radiant energy (Elemental Fire) and various gasses (Elemental Air) and of course carbon ash (another form of Elemental Earth). A pool of Water (Elemental Water) changes its elemental nature becoming (Elemental Earth) or (Elemental Air) as it freezes or evaporates."

    L.P. "Excellent, Charles. After all these years of confusion I finally understand that ancient concept of the Four Elements. I find it amazing that these ancient minds could have truly grasp these unchanging and very esoteric realities, especially without any scientific technology. It boggles my mind."

    C.G. "Yes, they were truly brilliant....at least!"

    L.P. "So far we have touched on the twelve parts, four parts, and three parts. What about the two parts?"

    C.G. "Yes, Duality. Twoness! This archetypal quality of the universe is one of the great mysteries and the contemplation of duality occupies the minds of all philosophers. The perennial conclusion acknowledges an omnipresent and omnipotent duel force at the heart of all manifestation. In the East, this dual force is called Yin and Yang. The Hermetic philosophers call this duality Gender Energy, and in the Astrological system this polar force is called The Projective and The Receptive. This energy pulses around the astrological chart with six Projective signs and six Receptive signs. The Projective signs of the Zodiac are: Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, and Aquarius. The Receptive Signs are: Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, and Pisces. "

    L.P. "Charles, I've also heard this duel force called The Masculine and The Feminine. Is this the energy behind the so called 'battle of the sexes?"

    C.G. "Yes, of course. Everyone knows the dynamics of that relationship. Man and Woman is our ultimate exoteric lesson in duality; the Projective and the Receptive; Attraction and Repulsion. The popular contemporary concept of the so called Left and Right brains, is also defining this arcane duality. It literally makes the galaxies spin. Gender Energy is the omnipresent and omnipotent force at the heart of ALL. Mantaining relative balance within this dynamic is the ultimate goal."

    L.P. "Yes, balance. I see the famous Yin/Yang at the center of your Mandala. Let's talk about the Center of this Mandala.C.G. "The center of this Mandala makes reference to the major divisional qualities of the Astrological system. At the precise center we find the Bindu, or single point. This is the symbol of unity, the ultimate expression of the holistic. The Bindu is The First archetype of Sacred Geometry, from which all form evolves. The circle which encloses the twelve houses is also an expression of unity or wholeness....Oneness. But our universe is created through the division of that unity and necessarily, all individual expressions of universal Oneness are based in duality; hence the Yin/Yang; The Projective and The Receptive....Unity into Duality.

    Next comes The Trinity (The Equilateral Triangle: the Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable); and then The Square, representing Elemental Fourness (Fire, Earth, Air, and Water). At this point, the mandala begins to divide into its more subtle parts: first 12 and then 72. Those lines radiating from the edge of the dynamic square, represent five degrees each (72 parts). And of course, the Mandala eventually divides into 360 parts."

    L. P. "This painting is really quit simple, Charles, when you take some time with it. But I'm still curious. I see another division of our circle we haven't talked about. What about those strange little shapes of bright color....the yellow, red and blue forms between the three squares and the four triangles.C.G. "This is a fairly esoteric aspect of Astrology, Leslie, which I know Pamela contemplated in her meditations. Each of the 12 houses or signs in the Zodiac represents a 30 degree section of the heavens, and each of those houses are divided into 3 parts: 10 degrees each. These sections are called The Decants (36 parts of the circle) and they are associated with the Astrological trinity: the Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable. Each of the 36 decants are associated with one of those three qualities. It's kind of a sub rhythm of trinity within the larger rhythm of that same archetypal trinity. The 12 yellow decants are Cardinal (Spiritual); the 12 red decants are Fixed (Physical/Material); and the 12 blue decants are Mutable (Mental). This rythm is very interesting to me. I'm still thinking about it; but Pamela understood the decants completely."

    L.P. "What do you mean, Charles? What did Pamela do with these decants? How did she use them? What was her thinking?"

    C.G. "When Pamela would construct a astrological chart she would look carefully and meditatively at the various geometric aspects; all of the relative positions of the planets as they relate to the Zodiac and to one another. As her meditation deepened she would begin to feel patterns and weights within these geometric relationships. As the larger patterns emerged she would begin to see the more subtle patterns like the decant patters. For instance; If a human's sun sign falls at say, 7 degrees Gemini, that Mutable or mental energy is magnified because the entire house of Gemini holds mental energy, as does the first decant of Gemini. But if the natal Sun would rest at 17 degrees Gemini, that would put it in the second decant of Gemini which is Cardinal, a spiritual energy decant. The sign of Gemini marks strong mental influences but this 17 degree Gemini would feel an additional spiritual influence. Pamela would process hundreds of details like this in her meditative mind and would somehow find a relatively accurate picture of anyone. Like I said, Pamela was tremendously gifted and she had developed those talents."

    L.P. "Another question just popped into my mind, Charles. What about this idea that the planets run backwards, planets in retrograde I think is the term? That one makes no sense to me."

    C.G. "Of course not, Leslie. Planets can't suddenly stop and begin moving in the opposite direction, that's ridiculous. But that is what they occasionally appear do within the astrological map. For instance: As you know, the planet Mercury is our Sun's closest neighbor. Mercury is relatively close to the Sun (about 58 million kilometers) and orbits the Sun about three times faster than the Earth (every 88 days). In the astrological chart, Mercury is never very far from the Sun. When you see the Sun, Mercury can never be farther than 28 degrees away. Mercury moves with the rest of the planets as it crosses the Sun on the back side, but as it continues to revolve around the Sun, it appears to move backward as it swings around and moves in front of the Sun; backing up in the astrological map. That's Mercury in retrograde. As it reaches the lower part of its orbit and once more begins its swing behind the Sun, it appears to change direction again. This natural cycle repeats about three times per year."

    L.P. "I get it Charles. Again, totally understandable when you really look at it. I have no idea what was blocking me on that one. I am sure we could go on and on but we need to bring this interview to an end. What do you think, Charles? what's the major point? Can you sum it up for me?"

    C.G. "We could talk all night about Astrology, but this is a good place to rest. What is the main point? I suppose it is that Astrology remains a completely legitimate metaphysical system directly connected to the oracular powers of Sacred Geometry."

    L.P. "What about the obvious hostility exhibited by the majority of the scientific community?"

    C.G. "Personally, I see no conflict between astrology and modern science. Astrology works....a fact which, for many years, was proven to me on a daily basis by my very gifted wife. It (astrology) remains a vital system of self discovery. Pamela's life of growth and service was a testament to that reality. At the same time I must respect the official scientific resistance to Astrology because this metaphysical system is obviously mapping occult forces which science can not (at this time) measure. Of course that dose not mean that the currently unmeasurable ethereal realm of super fine vibrations is not a reality."

    L.P. "I know you are using the word occult in the classical sense, but please help my scientific mind grasp the possibility of these mysterious unmeasurable forces."

    C.G. "Easy, Leslie. This is still a very mysterious universe. We think of a loved one thousands of miles away or maybe just across the street....and they call. Or we dream of someone and they show up....and on and on. This kind of simple paranormal phenomena happens to millions of people all over the world and always has. My personal experience has proven beyond all doubt that we human beings are connected to one another on very mysterious levels indeed; those connections involving energies far beyond current scientific understanding. Apply this paranormal reality to astrology. The massive Sun, Planets, Moons Asteroids, and Comets which make up our solar system are not just (as scientists would have us believe) dead balls and chunks of relatively heavy stuff. Gravity is not the only force involved."

Some stars (people) are lighter and brighter than others. Some stars burn out quickly, and others turn into a supernova or quasar. People in the Bible are often called Stars (people are male and female, although stars themselves are mostly the fire element, and the symbology of the nucleus (protons/neutrons form a more male aspect, although it contains some female too). Abraham was told that his descendants would be numbered like the stars in the heavens. The male aspect of a star is simply the fiery energy and drive and light and heat energy which gives life to the more feminine aspects which surround and encircle it.If some people are stars which give off light, what happens when some die out or explode into a great flash of light (supernova) or turn into a black hole (no light given off)?A black hole is the grave of a star, when it loses all its fuel it collapses (pit with no bottom - the "bottomless pit"?). Within the black hole is a gravitational vacuum.... the closer you get to a black hole, the greater the gravitational field. The greater the gravity, the more space-time is stretched, and slowed. If you were far away from a black hole and watched your friend flying in a rocket toward the black hole, he would get closer and closer and finally, in a split second, cross the "event horizon" (the place of no return - the gravity boundary) and disappear into the black hole. To you, the entire thing would take but seconds because YOUR perspective is from the outside, but because your friend is nearer to the event horizon before he crosses it into the black hole, the whole experience (for him only) is slowed down to nearly forever and it could seem like eons before he finally disappears into the black hole. It's all perspective, placement, space-time-gravity dependent, and RELATIVE. Black holes are a symbol of negativity, bending light and sucking in stars (eating them, like a psychic vampire or a person who steals other peoples' energy, users and abusers, selfishness, like a force unto its own, containing no light of its own, but stealing everyone else's). Once past the gravity boundary (event horizon) you hit something called the singularity in the middle of the black hole. It is not yet known what happens at this point.Quasars (the remains of a star) are on outer rim of universe moving almost as fast as speed of light, but just before burn-out it turns into a black hole. Supernovae are of two kinds: Type1 probably happen in binary stars (closely orbiting stars) when one of the stars is a small, dense, white dwarf star. If the orbiting star gets too close to the white dwarf then gravity would draw matter from the other star... when the white dwarf gets 1.4 times as big as the Sun with the matter, it collapses into a supernova.Type 2 occurs when a star much more massive than our Sun ends its life (like the death of a person) the star starts burning out. The core quickly collapses releasing amazing energy as neutrinos (a particle smaller than an atom which passes through everything, even the earth does not stop neutrinos) and electromagnetic radiation (energy that is electric (male) and magnetic (female)). It explodes in a supernova.Supernovae shine brightest for only a few days, and after a few weeks or months or even years they start to fade. Some supernovae leave a small, dense, neutron star behind (composed of mainly neutrons - if it spins fast and is highly magnetized (female) it is a pulsar). Other supernovae leave an object called a black hole, or just an expanding shell of their outer layers. Supernovae are most often found in the brighter, larger, and older galaxies instead of the faint, smaller, younger ones. Spiral galaxies (such as ours - another aspect of male-female since spirals include symbols such as DNA, etc.) make more supernovae than egg-shaped ones. Our Sun is not orbiting a white dwarf, nor is it large enough to become a supernova. It would take a billion years from now before our Sun (son, Jesus, Ra, Horus, light-giver) to run out of fuel and swell into a red giant star before going into a white dwarf form. When our Sun uses up all of its helium gas, it will collapse with a huge explosion causing debris to fly out into space to help form new solar systems, starting the whole system over again (the great play of life, the great story retold over and over, the never-ending circle, alpha and omega (beginning and the end)... all of which are in the form of a circle, which has it's beginning at it's end, looping forever. Continual creation. If God is truly a Creator, then it would make sense that He/She would continue to create, and create, and create.     When I was young I had a book called Mathemagic which detailed the differences in numbers (odd numbers being male and even numbers being female) and I later learned that the alphabet was considered similarly, where consonants, having a HARD sound (requiring the lips to close, or the tongue to touch the palate, etc. in order to pronounce them) were male, and vowels (A,E,I,O,U) having a SOFT sound (able to be pronounced with the mouth open and no use of the tongue or lips) being female. Consonants are many, having different sounds (split into many specialized sounds a male aspect), and vowels are few, are much more versatile/flexible, can stand alone or be used in different combinations, and create new sounds (this lumping/bonding effect is a female aspect). If sounds and harmonics (realize music is a feminine right-brained thing even though it sometimes includes consonants (in singing) can have male-female aspects, then what about language itself? It is here that we realize that the power of the spoken WORD is so powerful. It is thought and energy manifested into being.I thought it was interesting as a child to learn that in Spanish they have words with gender. In English it is not so much this way, but in Spanish, like "mesa" (which means table) it is feminine. I had never thought of a table as a female! To me, it had always seemed neutral. But in most languages of the world there are feminine and male aspects to words and their meanings. In Spanish the words el and la are used before words like mesa. El is masculine, and la is feminine. To say "the table" in Spanish, one would say, "la mesa." If you used "el mesa" then it would be incorrect. So when learning a new language like this you also have to learn the gender of the meanings of words! In English, although we don't necessarily have words with gender connotations, we do have certain things/objects which are considered to be male or female. A good example would be a boat/ship, or a car, a plane or space shuttle... these are all considered to be females. A pirate on his ship will say, "She's a mighty good ship." Men throughout history have attributed a female aspect to things they ride in, or that brings them movement (remember the electrons' movement bringing a change), or a change of scenery by going from place to place. Women are the common motivators of change, often being more flexible than the left-brainness of men, which is typically standardized and methodical and unchanging in processes. Men, however, bring stability and strength (structural foundation), where women are considered to be more emotional and unstable (chemistry which creates bonds).Left-brain = Male (speech, judgement/objective, logic, linear, analytical, rational (western))Right-brain = Female (emotion, feeling, art, comprehension, creativity, divergent, intuitive, holistic (eastern))Balanced-brained = Male-female (equal in both aspects, pulling from both sides harmoniously)The term "mankind" (remember that MANkind inherently includes the feminine aspect) is a patriarchal form. Many of the worlds' religions are patriarchal, and interestingly enough, even the feminine religions (Hinduism, Buddhism, etc.) were borne from one of the oldest known religions, Judaism, and Kabbalah (Jewish Mysticism - where many of these male-female aspects are taught and known as a code and archetype of how the universe was created, rather than taking the Bible or Torah only from a literal standpoint). Christianity and all its factions and doctrines, creeds, and church religions from Catholicism to Protestants to New Age to Fundamentalists, all stemmed from Judaism as well. Judaism, however, although the most renowned and influential monotheistic religion in the world, still got its teachings and traditions from a higher source.... the ultimate TRUTH of which a piece (or pieces) of lies within the heart of all religions of the world. Just as no one religion is THE truth by itself, no one person is THE God by him/herself. All religions have a common thread of truth running through them, just as all peoples have a common thread of God (Male-Female Spirit-Energy) running through them, making them "gods" individually, but GOD collectively, if joined together with the unified energy of the entire universe(s) on ALL levels. This is infinite and beyond comprehension for the left-brain (male side of the brain) to think about, but the right-brain (female side of the brain) has no problem understanding the concepts and feelings of this universal connection.What is "right" in some peoples' minds (depending on how they were raised, and where in the world, under a patriarchal or matriarchal society) is not always what is correct universally. For some, like the Jews, the father of the house is the leader of the household and has the final say so in all things. The woman is believed to receive her spirituality from God THROUGH the man. Only if she is single does she receive God through herself. This is the same aspect taught in Christianity where Paul speaks of a woman being under subjection to the man (husband) and obeying him in all things. BUT, the man is also told, consequently, to love his wife as himself. Remember that men are (typically, in patriarchal societies) about status and ego, and that they are often in love with themselves in some fashion whereas the woman is typically more flexible, giving up herself and thinking of her husband and children before herself (not in all cases, obviously). Where this arrangement works good for both parties if they agree to it, believe it, and live it, it takes BOTH parties doing their part in order for there to be harmony. If, lets say, the woman does her part continually and faithfully, but the man loves himself and his ideas and wants his way ALL of the time, the woman will feel used and unloved and there will be friction in the relationship and ultimately a breakdown of the marriage may ensue. But, turning the tables here, if the man does his part, loving his wife as himself, and giving himself for her in all things, and the woman does not respect the man and give him the status he needs to feel as strong and as competent as he should, then he will go away from the marriage feeling unloved as well, disrespected, and shamed. It goes both ways. Matriarchal, or patriarchal, it doesn't matter. Matriarchal societies such as the Native Americans have had, work well for them (women naturally run the home more efficiently than men, typically), just as patriarchal societies such as the Jews have had also work well for them, bringing their left-brained dominance into play, being some of the most wealthy peoples on the planet. Do you see a trend here? Matriarchal societies tend to be happy and in communion with each other, peaceful, whereas patriarchal societies tend to be ego-driven, status and money oriented. There are always exceptions to the rules however.What caused all of these matriarchal/patriarchal societies to begin with (within the races) is commonly a left or right brained functioning of the people themselves. Right-brained people (men or women) are typically more spiritual, peaceful, artistic, and laid back types. Left-brained people (men or women) are more driven, more into the physical world, humanity, math, and logical. The real deal is that both men and women, although typically "typed out" as women being predominately right-brained, and men being predominately left-brained, can really be either! BOTH GENDERS HAVE BOTH MALE AND FEMALE ASPECTS IN THEM (just as both genders have two hemispheres of the brain), it's just that one usually predominates over the other. Neither one predominating the other is either "right" or "wrong." It's not uncommon to see a male who is right-brained and gentle-natured and a follower, and a woman who is left-brained and aggressive and a leader.
