Driving up north last weekend, I noticed signs of spring with flowers blossoming in tree orchards along I-5. We are just about a month away from spring’s actual arrival on the calendar, but time flies and it will be here shortly. In 4-H, springtime is also camp planning season and we are in full swing in Sacramento.

We have three camp programs that take place between May and July this year. The first is the 4-H On the Wild Side camp whose purpose is to bring environmental education and an outdoor living experience to fourth, fifth, and sixth grade children who have limited opportunity to explore wild places or sleep under the stars. Teens and adult volunteers come together in the spring for training to help prepare those lessons for the elementary school children, then travel to

Camp Gold Hollow in Nevada City for two unforgettable weekends at the beginning of June. The program is rewarding for those youth and adult volunteers who connect with one another to teach appreciation for conservation, environmental stewardship, and engage youth in outdoor experiences. If you are interested in volunteering for On the Wild Side, please contact Marianne Bird at [email protected], visit our website or check us out on Facebook.

Our traditional 4-H Resident Camp program, also takes place at Camp Gold Hollow in Nevada City from June 21-26, 2015. Our teen camp staff is in place and their training began last week with icebreakers, songs and coaching on how to best respond to a variety of camper behaviors. The 4-H Camp Committee has also been meeting since January and is comprised of both youth and adults that are passionate about bringing a unique and memorable experience to our campers this summer. Camper registration will begin next week. Visit our website or Facebook page to get additional information.

Finally, we have a unique camp that offers you an experience of a lifetime. 4-H Mountain Horse Camp will travel to the El Dorado National Forest where campers bring their own horse to ride on forested mountain trails, swim their horses in Bassi Creek, camp overnight by a cabin built in the 1800’s and swim, raft and rock climb at Gurle Creek Reservoir. Campers must be 12 years old or have completed the 6th grade, enrolled in 4-H and be a second year member of a horse project. 4-H Mountain Horse Camp will take place July 12-18,

2015. For more information you can email [email protected] or visit their Facebook page.

Join us this summer to experience one of our stellar 4-H Camp programs.

By: Nichole Simonsma Range View 4-H Horse Project

Sacramento County 4-H Silver Horse Show #1

The Sacramento County 4H Horse Project had their first horse show of the year on February 8

th. It was held at the Rancho

Murieta Equine Facility. Range View and Franklin 4H were in charge of running the show. They were in charge of setting up jumps, running the gates, handing out ribbons and announcing classes and placements over the loud speaker.

The rain held off for most of the early morning during the English classes but it didn’t take long for the rain to start and once it did, it was pouring! There were a couple minor incidents, a couple of kids fell in the mud leading their horses from the arena but nobody was hurt. The rain let up a little bit during some of the Western classes but when Gymkhana started, so did the rain. Range View wanted to give a special thanks to Jason Pearson for helping with the gates during these classes. He was soaked by the time it was over!

Everyone pitched in and helped out, and even though it rained for a good part of the day, everyone seemed to

have a great time. I’m sure we are all looking forward to our next show, and hopefully it will be a little drier.

Please come out and join us for our Silver Series show #2, March 7th at Brookside Stables.

By Hannah Duecker Herald 4-H How Herald 4-H helped out at the show: Poop patrol and gate crew. They passed ribbons out and announced

placings. They picked up trash, cans, and cleaned the arenas. Lastly, they moved jumps, trail patterns, and

gymkhana poles/barrels in and out.

Jeana and Emma waiting on Gymkhana class – Notice the wet shirts and horses!

Helping out at 4-H horse shows offer many opportunities for leadership and community service experiences.

For this show, Range View and Herald 4-H were assigned duties to help out with the running of the show.

MSDB residential students participated in archery and riflemanship 4-H projects to

learn the rules of the sports and to practice honing their skills. Safety was practiced at

all times during these sessions. The two projects were lead by volunteers who have

had experience with those sports.

In 4-H, volunteers and members may gain experience in practicing skills and gain

confidence in working beside 4-H youth who have special needs (physical, emotional,

learning disabilities) and this year’s Western Region 4-H Leaders e-Forum supplied

great resources for us to use:

4-H State Leadership Conference

National 4-H Congress November 27– December 1, 2015 Atlanta, Georgia http://national4-hcongress.com/ National 4-H Congress, was originally designed to recognize state and national winners. As the 4-H program has changed to meet the needs of youth today so has National 4-H Congress. This year’s event, like the ones has preceded it, will not only recognize excellence but also will provide an outstanding, educational opportunity for 4-H youth in order to analyze current youth issues.

Unfortunately, California does not have a National 4-H Congress State Coordinator. If you are interested in this

program, you may want to contact the CA 4-H’s Future Task Force and complete an online survey to suggest it

or make other suggestions for improvement.
