Sierra MillerSalutatorian

Sierra Miller was born in Troy, Ohio to Kim and Todd Miller. Ever since a young age, she has participated in many athletic and extra-curricular activities such as soccer and travel league soft-ball teams. Having won many awards and outstanding achievements, Sierra received a few prospective offers to play softball at the collegiate level. Despite the many worthy offers, she has decided to attend the University of Kentucky this fall to major in pre-medical laboratory science with a focus on pharmaceuti-cal studies. Sierra has participated in National Honor Society, Link Crew, Piqua Teen Lead-ers, concert choir, varsity softball and soccer, and the Big Brother Big Sister program. Sierra plans to strive for academic success at UK while also continuing to volunteer.

Timothy Wade WenrickValedictorian

Wade Wenrick was born and raised in Piqua. His par-ents are Jeff and Jeana Wen-rick. Growing up, Wade was given many opportunities to explore where he might find his discipline. Following in the steps of his sister, Emily, he excelled in academics. At the same time, his oldest sister, Laney, influenced him by example to be expressive through the arts. He found his passion when he began taking guitar lessons in sixth grade. Wade’s attraction towards the discipline in the guitar may come as a surprise to some, but those who truly know him are able to see where his path is set. After high school, Wade will be pursuing guitar as a career, all the while seeking to walk with integrity before God.

Jared Sherrick Troy High School Valedictorian

Jared is Troy High School’s Valedictorian and has been a lifelong resident of Troy. He has represented his high school and community by being selected for the Honda-OSU mathematics medal ceremony. He has participated in marching band and football as well as many other community service projects around the area. As member of the Boy Scouts of America, Jared earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He has volunteered countless hours of his time at the St. Patrick’s Soup Kitchen, not to mention beautification projects for various local church outreach programs and non-profit organiza-tions. He would like to credit his friends, family and mentors for his achievements now and in the future. In the fall Jared plans to attend The Ohio State Uni-versity as a member of the Honors program where he will study aerospace engineering and conduct undergraduate research. Ultimately, he plans to one day work for NASA or SpaceX, where he wishes to design satellites that will provide cheap internet access and educational tools to underdeveloped nations around the globe — pursuing Trojan excel-lence in every aspect of his life. He is the son of Ron and Melissa Sherrick.

TiPPecanoe HigH ScHoolValedictorians

Alisha Bhagwat is the daughter of Varsha and Anand and will attend THE Ohio State University as an English and Pre-Med Major. Alisha is a National Merit Finalist, AP Schol-ar, and Tippeca-noe Top Scholar. She is also a mem-ber of the National Honor Society and Inter-national Thespian Soci-ety. Alisha wants to pur-sue a career in medicine and says her dream job is to work as a physician for Doctors without Bor-ders. And, if that doesn’t materialize she might like to be a writer. Ali-sha looks fondly on her time spent working on several theater produc-tions as stage manager, director, and technical wizard and refers to this year’s spring musical as her most memorable high school experience. She is also a valuable member of the award-winning Quiz Team,

Model United Nations, and Choir. She names Ms. Aimee Noel as her favorite teacher because her depth of knowledge

and passion for her subject show in her teaching. The educator who most influenced her was middle school teacher Mr. Fred Gillenwater, because he toler-ated and nurtured

her interest in learning even when she was just 13 years old and annoy-ing. Although, that is very different from how teachers might describe her today. She thinks they would describe her as thoughtful and affable while her friends would describe her as compassionate, witty and chronically late. Alisha says one of the things she will most miss about high school is the ability to see her friends in one place every day. Her parting advice to students is “Don’t take anything too seriously.”

Allison Chitwood is the daughter of Julie and Doug and will attend THE Ohio State Univer-sity where she will study engineering. Ally is a Top Scholar, STEM Scholar, Scholar Athlete and Advanced Placement Schol-ar. She is also a member of the National Honor Society, Student Senate, Marching Band, and a number of other high school clubs. Ally’s extensive extra-curricu-lar involvement includes four years on the girls varsity golf team that boasts two visits to the Golf State Champion-ship. In fact, she says competing at state was her most memorable high school experience. Her least memorable experience was having her car backed into the first week she drove it to school. It is not surpris-ing that Ally says her teachers would describe her as attentive and dependable while her

friends might describe her as hard-working, kind, and a bit nerdy. She says former middle school teacher Mr. Len

Kenyon was her favorite teacher because his over-flowing passion for science was contagious. He encouraged her to enjoy biology and inspired her to par-ticipate in the local

science fair. The success at the local science fairs led to more honors and awards at district and state competitions. Yet, her favorite class was yearbook because she enjoyed the creativity. One day Ally hopes to add a master’s degree and PhD to her creden-tials. Her career goal is to be a college professor of engineering but she admits her dream job is to be a chocolatier. She too says she will miss the wonderful friends she has made in her classes and activities but she will not miss the ban on wearing a hat in school.

Mitchell Poynter is the son of Raenell and Sean and will attend the University of Pennsylva-nia as a bioengi-neering major. He wants to eventu-ally contribute to the advancements in prosthetics and medical treat-ments. Mitchell is a Tippecanoe Top Scholar, AP Scholar and 5-time Academic All-Ohio. He is also a member of the National Honor Society, Student Senate, and the school’s award-winning cross country and track teams. His most memorable high school experience was winning the Team Cross Country State Championship in 2015. The teacher who most impacted him is Ms. Aimee Noel because she taught him how to collaborate with class-mates’ ideas and opin-ions in order to gain new perspectives. He says Mr. Deron Brown is his favorite teacher because

he makes physics engag-ing by explaining how each concept applies to the world in surprising ways. He says his teach-

ers might describe him as diligent, thoughtful and motivated while his parents would say he is ambi-tious and messy. Though an accom-plished scholar-athlete, Mitchell

humbly prides himself on spearheading the cre-ation of the Lunch Buddy Program, an endeavor to partner high school students with younger at-risk children so they have a positive role model. When he leaves high school, Mitchell says he will most miss the teachers who care about his education and future, talking with Mitch the custodian, and asking Mr. Randy Sentman, “How’s your apple?” He will not miss the low water pressure of the bathroom sinks.

His advice to students is get involved and fi nd your passions; do not let somebody tell you your limits.

Nathan Shirley is the son of Staci and Eric and will attend the University of Virginia where he will study economics. Nathan is a Tippecanoe Top Scholar, AP Scholar, and CBC Scholar Athlete. He is also a member of the National Honor Soci-ety, Student Senate and Varsity T Club. Nathan played on the high school basketball team for four years and the base-ball team for three years, volunteered in the fi rst grade Sunday school class at his church, and served on mis-sion trips. He says his teachers might describe him as curious and practical while his parents would perhaps describe him as clever and meticulous. His favorite teacher is Miss Aimee Noel because she is grounded and down to earth. Nathan says she greatly impacted him by mak-ing life seem so simple. The high school experi-ence that most impacted Nathan was participating in the American Legion Buckeye Boys State where he made some incredible friends and unforgettable memories. His career goal is to see the world, have fun and make enough money to build a ball pit in his basement. His dream job is to be a venture capital-ist. When he leaves the high school he will most miss his sports teams but he will not miss the daily announcements. In his free time, he enjoys play-ing play station, reading non-fi ction books and engaging in sports argu-ments with his friends. He admits to spending too much time on the internet and having a mild obsession with Star Wars. His parting advice to students is to put yourself out there and

always add guacamole to your Chipotle.

Salutatorians

Thomas Chaney is the son of Lori and Rick and will attend the Uni-versity of Kentucky as a materials engineer major. Thomas is a Tippe-canoe Top Scholar, AP Scholar, STEM Scholar, member of the National Honor Society, Eagle Scout and an entrepreneur. As a self-employed iOS developer, Thomas created an app called Exam Grade Calculator, an iPhone and iPad application designed to calculate

a needed exam score to receive a desired semester grade. He also created Zombie Arcade Game. It is not surprising that Thomas is a 6-year Science Fair participant

who presented at state all six years and received the highest rating of Superior each time and numerous other awards! He is an accomplished runner and says his most memorable high school experience was being on the state champion cross-country team. He credits former middle school teacher Mr. Len Kenyon with teaching him how to think scientifi cally and giving him the skills to excel in science. Mrs. Annette Mallot is his favorite teacher because she explained calculus well and never collected homework. Yet, the most impactful project goes to Mr. Randy Sentman’s Court Case because it made Thomas realize he never wants to be a lawyer. Instead, he wants to make an impact in the private space industry and perhaps that will take him to his dream job — astronaut. Thom-as will most miss the adventure runs with his cross-country team and will least miss the high school parking lot traf-fi c. When not inventing, studying, volunteering or running, he enjoys play-

ing the guitar (he is self-taught) and restoring a 1968 Ford Mustang.

Emily Gootzeit is the daughter of Kerry and Brian and will attend the University of Minnesota where she will study engineering. She wants

to save the world, save the whales, and make money. But seriously,…her dream job is to be an NFL sideline reporter. Emily is a Tippe-canoe Top Scholar, STEM Scholar and member of the

National Honor Society. She is also the recipient of numerous science fair awards at local, district and state competi-tions…experiences that Emily says signifi cantly ben-efi ted her educa-tion. Emily is a 4-year member of the award-winning Tippecanoe High School march-ing band and this year served as the Field Com-mander. She says her teachers might describe her as outgoing and responsible while her parents might say she is determined, passion-ate and disagreeable. Despite her accomplish-ments, Emily admits that even her closest friends might not realize she can be extremely lazy and truly enjoys doing nothing. She names Mrs. Annette Mallott as her favorite teacher because of her inspiring pas-sion for teaching. She inspired Emily to pursue her studies in engineer-ing and provided her with valuable college and career advice. It was middle school teacher Bridgette Hughes who most impacted Emily because she helped her discover a love for read-ing and guided her on the path towards high school success. Emily’s most memorable high school experience was being crowned home-coming queen. Her part-ing advice to students is, “Don’t stress about every little thing. You will get into college. It will be

OK.”

Jessica Hemmelgarn is the daughter of Sue and Rick and will attend Ohio University to study biological sciences. Jesse is a Tippecanoe Top Scholar, AP Scholar, and member of the National Honor Society. She hopes to own her own veterinary practice, work closely with an animal rescue, and open a coffee shop that harbors adopt-able cats called “Cozy Paws.” (Please don’t steal that idea or name. She needs time to get a copy-right.) Her dream job is to be a veterinarian in

the military, work-ing with service dogs and exotic animals around the world. During high school, Jesse ran cross-country and track, served as editor of the Inferno Literary

Magazine, volunteered at the Humane Society of Greater Dayton, and was a member of the Interact Service Club. Her favorite class was band because she got to play and perform music while hanging around very cool people. She says running taught her endurance, discipline and pain tolerance that she will carry with her through life. It also pro-vided the foundation for her mantra: “Nothing can be worse than that 10 mile run.” Jesse says Ms. Aimee Noel and Ms. Erin Hill are her favorite teachers because they are the most interesting and supportive teachers she has ever met. Mr. Mike McCray affected her most because he was able to answer her questions that no one else could and helped motivate her to learn more. Jesse says she will most miss the friends she made here but she will not miss the arcane, ostentatious tests stu-dents had to take. In her free time, she enjoys hik-ing, playing the ukulele, watching Netfl ix and exploring new places.
