    Parish News:

Friday Soup Suppers & Stations of the Cross Join us on Fridays during Lent for soup supper and Stations of the Cross. Soup will be served 4:45 - 5:30 pm, followed by Stations at 5:45 pm. These delicious soups will be prepared by volunteer cooks. If you are interested in preparing a soup or providing bread for a soup supper, contact Cindy in the parish office. Donations to Operation Rice Bowl will be accepted during the soup supper. This is great opportunity to enrich your Lenten season.

Winter isn’t over yet...Volunteers Needed We need more people to Adopt the Church Walkways. Information and a sign-up sheet are on the table in the back of the church. Please consider this opportunity to give back by offering up a weekend.

Women of Faith - Fearless You are invited to a faith-filled day with other women in our Diocese to explore the conference’s theme “Fearless” on Saturday, March 23 at Marshall High School in Duluth. Sonja Corbitt, a gifted storyteller, will inspire listeners to take on their fears, ultimately drawing us closer to Christ. In the afternoon we will be blessed by a panel of religious sisters representing the three orders currently serving in our Diocese who live out their lives fearlessly for Christ. For more information & registration, go to our parish website or call the Diocese at 218-724-9111.

Lenten Book Study Please join us Sunday evenings at 6 pm for our study of the Catholic Dynamic book: The Biggest Lie in the History of Christianity. Written by Matthew Kelly, this book helps us dismantle the lie we tell ourselves and rebuild our lives from a place of truth, goodness, and beauty. The reading assignments are manageable, just several short chapters a week, and then we discuss them on Sunday evenings. Our goal is to encourage and challenge each other in our Christian faith. This week we will be discussing Chapters 4-6. Grab your book and come join us (if you don’t have a copy, we have extras). If you have questions about the study, please contact Cindy in the parish office or at 218-220-1582.

Join the “BEST LENT EVER”! This free email program will guide you on an incredible journey toward the-best-version-of-yourself. Sign up today at www.dynamiccatholic.com/best-lent-ever.

Into the Desert: A Lenten Study on Prayer Our Lord teaches that prayer is a relationship and a vital necessity. And yet, many of us have difficulty committing to daily prayer. Follow Jesus into the desert this Lent and discover intimacy with God in this 6-week video-based study with daily meditations in the participant’s guide. Dr. Tim Gray masterfully uses the discipline of Lectio Divina to show you how to make prayer an effective effort of love and intimacy. This series captures the secret to opening our hearts and minds to Scripture as the means to hear from God and then respond in conversation, basking in his presence and resolving to live in and through his love.

Lenten Reflections Set yourself up for a transformative 40 days with FORMED Lenten Reflections! Watch these short, daily reflections from Scripture expert Dr. Tim Gray to get inspiration and practical tips for growing closer to Jesus through fasting, prayer, and almsgiving. Don’t miss a day of growing closer to our Lord this Lent.

  • From the Desk of Father Steve: Seeing God in Everyday Life: Jesus, Take the Wheel

Jesus, take the wheel, Take it from my hands, 'Cause I can't do this on my own, I'm letting go.

So give me one more chance, And save me from this road I'm on: Jesus, take the wheel.

    -Song by Carrie Underwood

The quotation that I have put above might strike us as strange: why in the world is Father Steve quoting a Country Western song by Carrie Underwood in his bulletin article?! Well, this bulletin article series that I am conducting is all about seeing God in the everyday moments of life. This song by Carrie Underwood came out in 2005 and won immediate acclaim from both the Christian music scene and the secular music scene. It was a number one hit on the Billboard Country Music chart

and won Carrie Underwood a Grammy award for best country song and best female country vocal performance. It’s a very popular song that I am sure most of us have probably heard before. And it’s all about seeing God in everyday life: the female character in the song who loses control of her car on a patch of ice cries out to Jesus to “take the wheel,” but of course, when one listens to the lyrics of the whole song, you realize that the character in the song is not just asking God for help in this tailspin on an icy road, but that her whole life has been in a tailspin, and she is asking God to take control of her life as well. Interestingly, I have recently had my own experience with my car that can easily spark an analogy for our spiritual lives. I didn’t spin out of control on a patch of ice, thankfully, but a few weeks ago, the electric power steering system in my car failed. I could still drive the car for the last few weeks, but it was a serious chore- no power steering makes for very strenuous and difficult steering. In fact, it’s not particularly safe because I realized that my reaction time and my ability to make quick and decisive turns was very limited. Thankfully, the power steering system in my car was repaired earlier this week, and what a relief! I never thought about how much of a gift it is to have something as simple as power steering in my car until it wasn’t there. And what I realized is that in some ways, our power steering systems in our cars is an analogy for how God works in our lives. You have all heard me speak about how we are all dependent upon God’s grace, God’s divine assistance, for us to be able to do any good that we do in our lives. Our actions, our moral decisions and behaviors, are meant to be guided and enabled by God’s divine assistance. Any good that we do is because God first gave us His grace to be able to do it. Without God’s grace, we can do nothing good. But, we still have to cooperate- we still have to do our part. While it’s true that without God’s grace, we can do nothing good, if we don’t choose to put that grace into action, and cooperate with it, we won’t do anything at all. God’s grace is necessary for us to do good, but so is our willingness to cooperate with that grace. It’s kind of like our power steering system in our car. The power steering system is like God’s grace- it’s already present, ready to be acted with and upon before we even turn the steering wheel. It precedes our action. And it makes our actions possible in the sense that it assists us in turning our car easily and well, making safe and accurate turns. Without our power steering, we can still turn, but we won’t be able to make turns well and safely like we would with our power steering working effectively. Our power steering system is necessary for us to steer our car well and rightly. But, we still have to be willing to engage, to drive, to steer! In other words, we have to be willing to cooperate with God’s grace in our lives, to live according to His commandments, to put His commands into effect by a free choice, to let Him guide us, and “take the wheel.” Lent is the perfect time to do this. First, we need to make sure that our spiritual “power steering system” is working effectively, and we do this by making sure that we are in right relationship with God, that His grace can actively and effectively work in us- this we do by making sure that we are not in a state of grave or mortal sin. If we are in such a state, then we ought to make use of the sacrament of reconciliation as soon as possible. Second, we need to spend that daily time in prayer with Jesus that I speak about so frequently, for doing so will teach us over time to rely on God and let Him be in control of our lives. And third, we need to stay very close to the sacraments, especially the sacraments of confession and the Holy Eucharist. Doing so will help us in making the right choices when faced with the many crossroads, twists and turns that life puts in our way. This Lent, let’s allow Jesus to take control, placing our lives in His hands. God bless you! ~ Fr. Steve

REMINDER: Our churches are open 7 am - 7 pm. Stop by and pray with Jesus throughout the week.

Time spent in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament is never time wasted!

  • Holy Spirit, Two Harbors

    Parish News:

    Baptized in Christ

Georgette Vivian Auger (parents: Robert & Rebecca,

grandparents: Tom & Mary Simonsen) was baptized

here at Holy Spirit last weekend. We congratulate the

parents and the members of their family on this happy

    occasion!

    Stations of the Cross

Pray the Stations of the Cross on Fridays during Lent

beginning at 7:15 PM. This form of prayer is unique

for little ones since there is a lot of movement, so bring

the whole family. Can’t move so well anymore? That’s

ok, too. You can pray the words while remaining

    seated or standing.

    Faith Formation

The next Faith Formation class is on Wednesday,

March 27. Families are encouraged to come for supper

together at 6:00. Classes begin at 6:30.

Fish Fry Announcement & Pasty Sale

For a variety of reasons including limited time, there

will be no Lenten fish fries this year. We plan to start

anew next year. We will be having a pasty sale at the

end of Lent/beginning of April which brings in a

similar profit for fewer hours of work. Please, plan to

    help with that.

    Bible 101

Bible 101 is a study which will make the Bible finally

make sense so you can start to pray with it. Sessions

are being held Sunday mornings at 9:30 in the

education center through Palm Sunday. This will be a

safe place to ask questions you feel like you should

    already know but don’t.

    2019 Women of Faith Conference

On March 23rd at Marshall High School in Duluth, you

are invited to a faith-filled day with other women in

our Diocese to explore the conference’s theme

"Fearless.” Sonja Corbitt, a gifted storyteller, will

inspire listeners to take on their fears, ultimately

drawing us closer to Christ. In the afternoon we will

be blessed by a panel of religious sisters representing

the three orders currently serving in our Diocese who

live out their lives fearlessly for Christ. Let this day be

like no other day! For more information go to

encounter with CRS Rice Bowl. Pick up your family’s

CRS Rice Bowl from the back of the church. During

the 40 days of Lent, as companions on the journey, we

    Cassi’s Corner

    I used to think of Lent with negative connotation;

something that was hard, unpleasant, and a time to

practice endurance of something uncomfortable. It

was almost a feeling of self oppression. I don’t know

that this is the way Jesus would want us to think of

Lent, though. He sacrificed so that we would be free

of oppression; free to be who we are created to be.

Lent, then, should be a time when we strive to grow

closer to Jesus in order to become more who we are

supposed to be; to break free. That sounds like some-

thing positive to embrace, not something to dread!

One point to clarify: we will have suffering in this

life, and in those times we should unify our suffering

with Christ’s. So this message is not one of saying

suffering is bad, rather, we should make sure we are

not adding suffering to ourselves that God would not

have us take on. So, I challenge you to purify how you

see Lent by taking a look at what you are doing for

    Lent this year and why.
