Lands End, withits spectacular
vistas and diverse
habitat, provides
wonderful experiences
for both amateur and avid birdwatchers. Due
to its location at the tip of the San Francisco
Peninsula, Lands End is an important stopover
for migratory birds. More than 200 species of
migrant and resident birds have been sighted
from its trails and overlooks.
SEAL ROCKS: Oystercatcher, Brandt’s Cormorant,Brown Pelican, Black TurnstoneSUTRO BATHS: Ring-necked Duck
BLACK OYSTERCATCHER (17.5") Thisbig, stocky shorebird is easilyidentified by its black body,red-orange bill, and pinklegs. A loud whistled callfrequently announces thepresence of this permanentresident that can be seennesting on Seal Rocks. Black
Oystercatchers are foundalong rocky coastal shorelines
from Baja California to Alaska.
HERMIT ROCK: Pigeon Guillemot, Brandt’s Cormorant
MILE ROCK: Surf Scoter, Peregrine Falcon,Harlequin Duck, Long-tailed DuckPIGEON GUILLEMOT (13.5") This black sea bird withbold white wing patches and bright red feet is moreclosely related to the puffin than the pigeon. Likeother members of the family Alcidae, they use theirwings to “fly” underwater to catch fish. A colony of
guillemots can be seen on Hermit Rock below the MileRock Overlook from March to August.
EL CAMINO DEL MAR TRAIL
TOWNSEND’S WARBLER (5") Warblers are small birdsof the trees. The Townsend’s Warbler shows yellowon the face, breast, and flanks; as well as a black facemask, cap, and streaks along the flanks. Adult maleshave a black throat. Townsend’s Warblers nest fromOregon to southern Alaska and can be found in Lands
End conifer trees from August to May.
SUTRO HEIGHTS PARK: Hooded Oriole, Red-tailed Hawk,Allen’s HummingbirdALLEN’S HUMMINGBIRD (3.75") Orange-rust colorationon the tail and sides distinguish this species from theAnna’s Hummingbird. Allen’s Hummingbirds arrive inFebruary from their wintering grounds in central Mexico. Its breeding range is restricted to the coastal regions of
California and southern Oregon.
