Coach Keith Lowman wasn't able to find much joy in a 6-0 shutout win over Ridgeland last Monday on the road. "We were sorry!" the coach exclaimed. The team played poorly, and it showed. Ridgeland just wasn't very good and we couldn't take advantage. "Well, a win is a win," he added. "I just wish that we could have picked up some momentum to carry us through the rest of the week." Travis Varnes picked up the win, giving up only five hits. Woodland could not continue their winning ways, however, as they hosted Edisto. The Wolverines forged an early inning three run lead before providing Edisto a pair of two out errors that pulled Edisto ahead to stay 9-8. The Wolverines fought back, managing to move two runners into scoring position with the tying and winning runs. "We just couldn't get them across," Loman said. "We didn't quit. Those two errors were critical." Justin Mims pitched 4 and 2/3 good innings; the Wolverines managed eight runs and nine hits, but it was not enough. Jason Mims had a pair of hits; Ryan Troutman belted a dou- ble and a triple. Varnes, Ethan Westbury, and Troutman each drove in a pair of runs. Barnwell to came away with an 8-5 win on Friday, although the Wolverines moved to a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning then, going into extra innings, Barnwell took a 5-3 lead in the tenth. Woodland had an opportunity to take the win in the bottom of the tenth with runners on second and third, but failed to move them in. Coach Lowman said that he was still confident that his boys were going to put things together, "We had errors, and couldn't pick up the timely hits. I feel like we should have come away winners in all but one game; and we should get on a win streak, our goal is still to make the playoffs and go on from there." Westbury had two hits and two RBI's while Justin Mims had one of each in the Barnwell loss. The Wolverines play host to Bamberg-Ehrhardt on March 25, followed by Wade Hampton on the road on March 27. The WH game completes the Wolverine regular sched- ule going into play in the Annual Hanahan Invitational Tourney (HITS). Woodland is expecting to play in a minimum of three games in the tourney at the Moncks Corner site. Woodland opens their HITS tourney play when they take on powerful Stratford on Monday, March 30. Senior Drake Knight tries to score for Woodland, but is called out in the Wolverines’ extra-inning loss to Edisto, 8-9. Woodland will host Bamberg-Ehrhardt Wednesday and will travel to Wade Hamption Friday. Record is 3 - 1 JV Raider Baseball Opens Season By Coach Carlton Peele The Dorchester Academy JV Raider Baseball team opened its season recently, and has compiled an early 3-1 record. The team travelled to Patrick Henry for the season opener on Wednesday, March 4. DA took an early lead and held the 2-0 lead until the third inning, when an error allowed Patrick Henry to tie the game. Dorchester regained the lead in the fifth inning, only to commit another crucial error, allowing PHA to again tie the game. Then Patrick Henry scored in the last inning to take a 4-3 win over the Raiders. Leading DA at the plate were Andrew Faulling (two for two), Josh Chinners, Colby Weeks, and David Beane each with one hit. Chinners started the pitching duties for Dorchester, pitching three excellent innings. Lance Brownlee and Chase Way pitched in relief. The young Raiders next travelled to Jeff Davis Academy on Friday, March 6, and redeemed themselves with a 15-0 shutout over JDA. Josh Chinners pitched the complete game (called in three innings due to run rule), striking out seven batters and walking only one batter, while allowing only one hit for the afternoon. Chinners also lead DA hitting with two hits, followed by Lance Brownlee, Andrew Faulling, Jack Berry, and Dawson Lucas with one hit each. As a Team the JV Raiders were disciplined at the plate, drawing 10 walks throughout the game. After a week of quality practices due to improving weather conditions Dorchester trav- elled to Clarendon Hall on Friday, March 13. Clarendon Hall proved to be the best oppo- nent faced thus far, but DA played impressively, hammering out 14 hits over five innings to defeat Clarendon by a score of 17-4. DA scored seven runs in the first inning. Clarendon answered with four runs in their half inning. But strong pitching from Marion Infinger in relief of starter Lance Brownlee, and excellent defense would not allow Clarendon to score the remainder of the game. Infinger pitched five innings, striking out five batters while allowing no hits and no runs. Leading the DA hitting was Josh Chinners who batted four for four on the afternoon, with a pair of doubles. Rhett Mizzell was also perfect, going three for three, with a double of his own. Chase Way and Andrew Taylor had two hits each, followed by one hit each from the bats of Jack Berry, Colby Weeks, and Lance Brownlee. -------------------- The Raiders played their first home game on Friday, March 20, in a rematch with Patrick Henry.
