David Bartnicki, Federal Training Officer
U.S. Department of Education Federal Student Aid
David has worked for the U.S. Department of Education’s Federal Student Aid Office for over 24 years. He has served as an Institutional Review Specialist, Institutional Improvement Specialist (IIS), Branch Chief for Contract Compliance and is currently a Federal Training Officer. David’s entire government career has been in the Atlanta Regional Office where he currently works directly with over 1,100 postsecondary schools in the Southeast Region. As a training officer, David provides training and technical assistance on a wide variety of federal student aid topics to schools, state agencies, accreditation bodies and higher education organizations through a variety of state, regional, national and Department venues. While in FSA, David has helped redesign the FSA Assessment Modules, developed the popular “Ask A FED” booth at the annual FSA Conferences, and developed the Department’s compliance review process for ED’s private collection agencies. David serves on the Conference Delivery Team, FSA Fundamentals Redesign Team, and the National Verification Team. In addition, David has received numerous financial aid awards including the 2016 GASFAA (GA) Service Award, the 2014 Certificate of Recognition from the State of Alabama Governor Bentley’s Office; 2013 FSA Award for Most Innovative Team, 2013 FASFAA Distinguished Service Award (FL), 2013 TASFAA Distinguished Service Award (TN), the 2012 SASFAA Distinguished Service Award (Southern Regional), the 2012 AASFAA John H. Buchanan Distinguished Service Award (AL), 2012 MASFAA Special Recognition Award (MS), the 2011 Kentucky “Admiral” Award, 2010 FSA Award for Best Mission Results, the 2005 Florida Public Career Technical Center’s Merit Award, the 2003 SCASFAA Distinguished Service Award (SC), the 2003 AASFAA Award of Merit (AL) and the 2001 NCASFAA Award of Merit (NC). When not working, David enjoys spending time with his wife, Christy, and sons Luke (19), Adam (18), and Ethan (14). And of course, Zyke, the world’s cutest dog!
Justin Draeger, President and CEO
NASFAA
Justin Draeger is President and CEO of the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators. He serves as the primary voice of NASFAA and as the liaison between the association members, the U.S. Congress, federal agencies and the media. Most of Justin’s career has been devoted to assisting disadvantaged populations achieve their educational goals and better their communities. Since 2002, Justin has been engaged in either administering, interpreting, communicating, or developing student financial aid policy. His prior experiences include working as a financial aid director, regulatory and policy analyst, and spokesperson. He has held senior positions overseeing government relations, communications, and policy work. Justin is frequently quoted in the press and has appeared on The Today Show on NBC, National Public Radio, APM’s Marketplace, Fox Business News, CNBC, and C-SPAN, and is often quoted in national news outlets. Justin currently serves on the boards of directors of the American Council on Education (ACE), Baker College, the Association Mutual Health Insurance Company, his local PTA board, and other organizations that promote health and education. He earned his undergraduate from Brigham Young University and his MBA from Baker College. Justin lives in Fairfax, VA with his wife and three children, where he spends his free time shuttling children to various events, playing racquetball, running or swimming.

Lan Huynh, Advocacy and Education Specialist
Atlanta Community Food Bank
Lan Huynh is a nonprofit professional who has lived in Atlanta for almost four years. She possesses a lifelong passion for helping others and has combined that passion with a career that will create a lasting impact in her community. Lan is originally from Austin, Texas, where she attended the University of Texas. After obtaining a Corporate Communications degree, she became an AmeriCorps NCCC member working on disaster, environmental stewardship and rebuilding projects in the Southern states. After her term was completed, she moved to New Orleans to join the ongoing rebuild and blight reduction efforts in New Orleans. She rebuilt houses with Rebuilding Together New Orleans, spent three years with United Way of Southeast Louisiana to raise funding and awareness for UW's NO Place Like Home initiative to help families that were still displaced. Next, Lan moved to Denver where she worked for the ALS Association Rocky Mountain Chapter helping patients facing the life-ending disease of ALS. Now Lan works for the Atlanta Community Food Bank where she feels she has finally found her place in the nonprofit world helping those who are hungry. In her free time, Lan loves to play and watch sports. She also has a love for hiking, outdoor activities, and good food.
Kate Atwood, Executive Director, ChooseATL
& Founder, Kate’s Club
Kate Atwood is the executive director of ChooseATL, an innovative economic development initiative that focuses on attracting and retaining the next generation talent to ensure Atlanta’s position as a top globally competitive metro. In short, ChooseATL shines a national spotlight on the city as a unique epicenter of creative culture, diverse community and innovative industry that makes millennials say ‘hashtag goals’ when they think about the A. Launched in 2015, ChooseATL has helped flip the script for millennial migration to Atlanta, putting the emerging city in the spotlight both amongst new talent and new Brands. Kate and her team cover a lot of territory in their efforts to attract the next generation to Atlanta, from participating in bids by the metro region to secure new or expanding headquarters, to launching the first city-based OTT video streaming network, THEA, featuring content rooted in Atlanta and relevant to the world. In 2017, Kate led activations around the country including the ChooseATL House at the SXSW Festival where she interviewed rapper and actor Ludacris, and reached 20,000 young job-seekers with messages about career opportunities in Atlanta and the region’s unique offerings. ChooseATL has received recognition for its industry leading approach to talent attraction from media powerhouses such as Forbes, Bloomberg and Vogue, as well as received a Gold Award from the International Economic Development Council. Kate is known as an entrepreneur and a community leader who has built a career on driving social impact initiatives in the non-profit and for-profit sectors. At 23, she founded Kate’s Club, a nationally-acclaimed not-for-profit organization that provides support to children and teens facing life after the death of a parent or sibling. Having lost her own mother to cancer at the age of 12, Kate set out to build a world for children and teens where it was okay to grieve. What started with just six kids is today a thriving community organization that serves thousands of children and their families. Kate remains involved with Kate’s Club as its Founder. She is the author of “A Healing Place,” and has been featured in six books as a thought-leader on personal giving and social enterprise. Kate has been frequently featured in media, including People Magazine, Marie-Claire Magazine, Huffington Post, the Today Show and The View. Recently, she was named to GOOD Magazine’s global “GOOD 100” list for her commitment to helping others.

Susan Lounsbury, Director of Education Data Services
Southern Regional Education Board
Susan Lounsbury joined the Southern Regional Education Board in February 2014, as the Director of Education Data Services. She has nearly 30 years of experience in higher education policy and practice. As the Director of Education Data Services at SREB, Susan is responsible for coordinating the collection of data for the SREB State Data Exchange, analyzing data collected in the Data Exchange and through other means, and producing publications such as the SREB Fact Book on Higher Education and Featured Facts. Prior to joining SREB, Susan was the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research and Policy Analysis with the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. She has also held positions in education program evaluation and student affairs in higher education. Susan holds a B.S. in Psychology from Louisiana State University, a M.S. in Higher Education and Student Affairs from Indiana University, and a Ph.D. in Higher Education from Pennsylvania State University.
Joan M. Lord is Vice President for Education Data, Policy Research and Programs at the Southern Regional Education Board. Included in the program she oversees are SREB’s Challenge to Lead Goals for Education, the Education Technology Cooperative, the office of Data Services, the Doctoral Scholars Program and SREB’s Go Alliance, a partnership of states promoting high school completion and college access. She began her career as a seventh-grade grade teacher and later taught English at a two-year college; she served as an administrator in developmental studies at an urban university and later served there as an assistant vice president for academic affairs. She was an American Council on Education fellow in academic administration in 1984. She was Vice President for Academic Affairs at Floyd College (Rome, GA). She also served as Interim Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs for the University System of Georgia and Interim President of Georgia Southwestern State University. She has been at SREB since 2001. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Vanderbilt University, an MS from Florida State University and a Ph.D. from Georgia State University.

Craig Munier, Policy Liaison and Implementation
U.S. Department of Education Federal Student Aid
Craig Munier has worked in student financial aid on college campuses since 1982 and in higher education administration since 1976. Mr. Munier is a past National Chair of the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA), past National Chair of the Coalition of State University Aid Administrators (COSUAA) and served as chair of the National Direct Student Loan Coalition (NDSLC). He joined the U.S. Department of Education, Federal Student Aid, Policy Liaison and Implementation, in Washington, D.C. in 2015.
Karen returned to the NCAA as an Assistant Director of Academic and Membership Affairs (AMA) in October 2016, where her current responsibilities include co-leading the Division I Bylaw 14 team (Academics) and serving on the Division I Bylaw 12/15/16 team, particularly in the area of financial aid. Karen also provides liaison support to the Committee on Women’s Athletics and oversees the department’s legal externship program. Karen previously worked at four Division I member institutions and as a member of the NCAA enforcement staff. Karen has served on a number of nonprofit boards, including the Junior League of Indianapolis, Intercollegiate YMCA of Greater Indianapolis, and Alpha Gamma Delta Women’s Fraternity. A native of Rome, Georgia, Karen earned her undergraduate degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a law degree from The University of Alabama. Karen lives in Martinsville, Indiana with her husband, J.T., and their children, Emily (5) and Jack (3).

Marvin Smith, Executive Director, Student Financial Services
Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis
Marvin Smith is the Executive Director of Student Financial Services at IUPUI in Indianapolis. Marvin has been in the financial aid profession for 30 years with stops at Purdue University-West Lafayette, Ivy Tech Community College-Lafayette, and IUPUI. He has been highly involved in the work of ISFAA, MASFAA, NASFAA, the College Board, and COSUAA (the national organization of large public university aid directors). He is a past president of ISFAA, current president of MASFAA, and the national chair- elect of COSUAA.
Alex has been at the NCAA since fall 2006 and is currently an Associate Director of Academic and Membership Affairs (AMA). His present responsibilities include co-lead of the Division I Bylaw 12/15/16 (Amateurism/FinancialAid/Awards and Benefits) Team and oversight of the Regional Rules Seminars. Alex also provides liaison support to the Olympic Sports Liaison Committee. From 1996-2001 Alex was a practicing attorney in Denver, Colorado specializing in intellectual property and corporate risk mitigation. After moving to Indiana in 2002, Alex spent four years as a swimming coach at the high school, USS and collegiate levels. A native of Somerset, New Jersey, Alex earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from Vassar College in 1993. While at Vassar, Alex was a captain and four-year letter winner in swimming for the Brewers. Alex received his law degree from the University of Denver in 1996. Alex currently lives with his wife, Juli, and 17-year-old son, KJ.

Lori Vedder, NASFAA Chair
University of Michigan – Flint
Lori Vedder serves as the Director of Financial Aid at the University of Michigan-Flint, having served students and our profession for 30 years. Over this span she has actively engaged in association work at the state, regional and national levels. Having chaired multiple committees, she is also a former President of MSFAA (Michigan) and MASFAA. Lori has also served NASFAA in various roles including Treasurer, Association Governance, and a member of the Statement of Ethical Principles & Code of Conduct Task Force. She currently serves as NASFAA’s National Chair. Lori has received the MSFAA Henry Dykema Distinguished Service Award, MASFAA Leadership, Meritorious Service, Allen Purdy Distinguished Service, and the NASFAA Regional Leadership award, demonstrating her dedication to students and financial aid. She is committed to providing students with access to higher education as well as assisting in the development of new and immerging leaders in our profession.
Jenna Tucker, M.Ed., began working in Clemson's Center for Career and Professional Development as a graduate assistant for the University Professional Internship and Co-op (UPIC) Program. She returned to graduate school at Clemson after working for three years at a Fortune 500 company in Greenville, SC. After completing her Master's degree in Counselor Education in May 2014, she took on a full-time role as an Internship Counselor for UPIC, before moving into the role of Assistant Director of the program in 2015. Jenna's main area of focus is career and professional development, specifically by helping students gain valuable skills and real-world work experience through intentional and field-based internships.

Robert's background includes over a decade in senior financial aid roles at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Babson College, and 13 years at College Coach, the nation’s largest provider of college counseling services to corporate America. As a financial aid officer at MIT, Robert discovered a deep fascination with tax returns and business structures, and the theory of need analysis. He is an expert in college savings and education loan repayment strategies, and at College Coach, he delivered hundreds of workshops to students and families who were getting ready to save for or pay for college. As Director of Training for Iron Bridge Resources for the last three years, Robert has conducted dozens of tax trainings across the country for the financial aid community. He began conducting workshops for financial aid officers in 2015, and was selected by Jim Briggs, who pioneered tax workshops for aid officers and delivered them for thirty years, as Jim’s successor. Often introduced at conferences and workshops and “the new Jim Briggs”, Robert is thrilled to carry out Jim’s legacy.

Feryal Ashweh is a sophomore at Gwinnett Technical College. She is studying Business Technology with the goal of becoming an Office Manager in a medical office. Feryal states, “Being a federal work-study student has changed my life.”
Jerry Simmons is a junior at Kennesaw State University. A first-generation college student, Jerry is majoring in Psychology with the goal of becoming an Industrial and Organizational Psychologist.
Genesis Cooper is a sophomore at Mercer University. A double major in English and Philosophy with a minor in Entrepreneurship, Genesis plans to pursue a career in corporate and real estate law and to become a licensed real estate professional. Genesis’s mother passed away five days before she left for Mercer, and she states that the experience of losing her mother motivated her to become a leader on campus. Genesis was elected senator of a class of nearly 1000 students, one of the largest classes to ever enter Mercer University.
Ja Quane Thomas is a freshman at Lee University. His program of study is Digital Media, and he is one of 15 members of the Voices of Lee a cappella student ensemble.
