IllumiNaughtyDesign InternMay 2014 - July 2014Job Roles: Creating various promotional graphics to be used for both web and print use.

IllumiNaughty is an events production company based in Manchester. They organise events for festivals, usually having their own stage, they also provide décor for such events and corporate events under the name of Visual Architects and also put together their own personal events for Manchester University.

I joined the company as part of a design intern working closely alongside the manager.Though my time there was short, I gained a wealth of experience from the various jobs I was tasked with and gained opportunities to be apart of the companies events.

The company branding and preferred style consisted of imagery and techniques I had never explored before so it was refreshing to improve my knowledge and learn new skills on such programs like Indesign and Photoshop.

Brief was to produce a double sided A5 leaflet for use in advertising an up and coming Halloween event organized by IllumiNaughty.

This design would be used for both print and web use. The final design had to incorporate a pre designed image and use fonts that linked to the theme of the event.

Page 6: Russell Mountford Portfolio

Established over seven years, IllumiNaughty has grown from hosting 200 capacity events to becoming the biggest Psytrance event outside London. Since then, IllumiNaughty has seen major success and growth accommodating 1,500 attendees at sell out events in Manchester’s local landmark ‘The Ritz’ (now HMV Ritz) and Mix Mag’s ‘Club of the Year 2011’ Sankeys nightclub. Once firmly established as major players on the Manchester clubbing scene, continual growth and high demand dictated the recent move to Manchester Academy which has enabled the event to accommodate audiences of up to 2,000 people. From a psy-trance event illumiNaughty has been transformed into a multi room indoor festival. Come this November we are looking at expanding event more building the event to 2500 people. IllumiNaughty has truly become Manchester’s indoor festival, an event that weather you’ve been or not you know and respect it for the effort and hard work that goes in.

The event is widely appreciated for its original and innovate production, varied musical entertainment, first class, theatrical performance and show stopping visuals and effects. As well as providing a platform for both UK and International acts the event has also nurtured the talents of aspiring local DJ’s, performers and artists.

The aim was to produce a A4 document which would be sent out to companies detailing information and the benefits of sponsoring an IllumiNaughty event. The document had to reflect the IllumiNaughty image and include a selection of photos showcasing the atmosphere of one of their events.

Brief was to create a poster to be used on social networking platforms to advertise what performers IlllumiNaughty wereshowcasing at Sunrise Celebration that year. Design had to fit in with the Sunrise Celebration branding image.

During my time there the company was in the process of creating a sister company called IllumiNasty. I was asked to produce the logo for the

new companyThe theme of the logo had to be apocalyptic, robotic and distorted. Final logo design was created using Adobe Illustrator.

Action Transport Theatrewww.actiontransporttheatre.orgFreelance DesignerOngoing Client Job Roles: Creating various promotional graphics to be used for both web and print use. Plus organising group events for a young audience.

Action Transport Theatre are a production company based in Ellesmere Port, who are also a Arts Council National Portfolio Organisation. They help organise theatre shows all over the North. This could be an in house show or a theatre group looking to expand the interest in their show. They also aid young, up and coming actors and actresses. With theatre work shops and agency work.

I came into contact with Action Transport when I was passed an advert looking for a free lance designer to create a small, 6 page activity booklet for children for an up and coming show. Interested I sent over my portfolio and I got the commission. Since then I have had a strong relationship with the theatre group and have become one of their go to designers. I have also organised a number of creative workshops for family fun days inviting people to come along and explore their creative side with arts and craft, animation workshops and even giant colouring boards.

The theatre business is an area I never thought of exploring with my work but have enjoyed each and every brief given to me by Action Transport and working for them has given me an idea into the working world of this business. Plus unlike other design jobs, their work has helped me explore creating child friendly graphics. Which is an area I am keen in exploring more of through out my career.

Page 9: Russell Mountford Portfolio

Brief was to create an activity booklet which could be used to entertain small children before or during a theatre production. Booklet had to incorporate the theme of the show, which was “The Piped Piper” and had to be laid out so it could be printed on an A3 sheet and then folded into a 4-page booklet with a full spread on the back.

Page 10: Russell Mountford Portfolio

The brief set was to redesign existing promotional material for a theatre show titled “Statik” Design had to use the Statik branding and include the logos of sponsoring partners. The design was to be used as both an A3 poster and a double sided A5 leaflet. The A3 poster had to include a specific blank section where a sticker could be placed. Bothvariations were created using Indesign with photos of cast members being edited in Photoshop.

The brief set was to design a 12 page brochure filled with information about the company and on 16 up and coming shows host by them. Design and layout was up to me but it had to fit in with the family friendly image of the company and each section had to reflect and fit with the branding/image of the show it was advertising. Layout design was key to completing to brief because I had a limited number of pages to fit quite abit of information into and each section had to stand apart from the other but flow nicely into the next.

Stockport CollegeJunior Designer within the Marketing DepartmentJuly 2014 - February 2016Job Roles: Creating promotional material, web banners and informative booklets.

What started off as a summer position, it soon grew into a full time job due to such positive feedback through out the company. I joined the marketing department as part of a completely new team after a recent restructure within the company. The new marketing manager saw potential in my working skills and style, this is what lead me to getting a full time contract. The current company style was very corporate in appearance, which is ok for in house documents but the marketing manager understand the college needed a modern look that was appealing to a younger audience for promotional material outside the college and that I would be an asset in understanding this look. This led to me playing a key a part in re branding the whole college image. I also aided the senior designer in putting together a new branding guidelines.

My time there has been interesting. Before this I had never designed within the corporate/ business sector, which can be very different than working with entertainment companies. It has helped me explore using my illustration skills in a more graphic design style and helped me understand the marketing of a company and putting together branding guidelines.

The college ran an in house event to help students progress their education. I designed the look of the event using the image of rocket ship to symbolize pushing the boundaries.

Poster was created with the Stockport college branding at the time of production and was created using Illustrator.

Department IconsDigital Illustrations2014

After a seeing a previously unused poster I designed, using simple icon illustrations my manager asked if I could create something similar but of each area the college offered to learners.

These icons went onto be the bases for the new imagery the collage would use for the prospectus and summer campaign. Students liked the designs because they could use them to easily identify what course they were enquiring aboutEach icon was drawn in Illustrator and laid out in InDesign.

The companies previous website had a scrolling banner. This was used to advertise events, showcase achievements or display important information. It was my job to design the

banners and keep them up to date with the comings and goings of the college’s life.

A group of students as part of a project had designed a concept for an app which would help keep people safe on a night out. I was asked to work with them to create a leaflet to help promote the app. Helping them

understand how to write a design brief and work alongside a client. They wanted a design which reflected the apps function but would appeal to a younger audience.

I was asked by members of the staff and student development department to design a graphic that would be used in various sections of the college. The brief was pretty open to my ideas, they only wanted

something that reflected people of all ages, gender and culture in various job roles. My time at the college ended before I could see how the graphic was put into use.

The college was going to be attending a school event at Event City, Manchester. I was asked to design the graphic, which would be mounted onto our display board at this event. The message behind the

imagery was how we could progress our learners from their time at college.

The brief set to me was to take a text document informing a young learner about the local colleges and design something which was more visually appealing. The design needed to look professional, beable to be read by all ages and not follow any of the colleges branding because it needed to advertise them all and not focus sololy on one. However, as part of some company espionage my marketing manager said seeing as we were producing the leaflet we should try and put the focus more on us than the other colleges. I achieved this by the using simple icon images currently mainly used by us, centring our logo and using mainly images of our facilities. No one from the other colleges noticed this and cleared the design.

I was tasked with coming up with the branding which would be used to advertise courses beginning January 2016. My manager wanted me to us the same colours of the current prospectus and also bring back the use of icons but designing a whole new set. I would also have to incorporate photography into some of my graphics. This imagery was used in a number of web graphics on social media platforms and also in newspaper adverts.

Mission, Vision and ValuesA1 Poster2015

Something the new acting principal wanted through the college was a poster which would inform staff, students and visitors what the colleges mission was. This task was given to me.

He wanted it to fit in with the look of the current prospectus and include a photo showcasing the diverse range of students we accommodate.

The Mission:

Disciplinary Info graphA3 Poster2015

The student well being team wanted a graphic designing which could be put up around the college and pointed to when informing a student about a disciplinary action

against them. They wanted it to be easily readable and very visual. It was designed using the current prospectus imagery and the colleges branding at the time of print.

image. This meant visiting the offices and liaising with the company director to see what they wanted. It was quite a big task with them wanting a new front of house and a number of various graphics. The main focus of the new branding I used was the icon of an aeroplane I designed and the use of a striking shade of blue. I jazzed up the front of house by installing a Professional fully branded welcome desk, vinyl window stickers on the doors of our logo and a plasma screen which would be used to advertise courses and any other im-portant information. The main form of graphics I worked on was introducing case study posters to be displayed around the classrooms. Showcasing students who had progressed onto a full time career due to the Airport Academy. One task I also gave myself was that upon my first visit to the academy I found loads of posters meant to inform students and visitors but were designed with nobranding or in some cases hand wrote in pencil. I took it upon myself to remove all of these and design new ones that looked professional and fitted in with my new branding image.

I am part of an artistic crew going by the name of Happy Medium. Though I have only been a part of it for a few years, I have already built up a strong relationship with them and have been able to work with them on some amazing projects in this short space of time. I joined the crew after contacting one of the artists (Mr Kobo) for a review on my portfolio. He saw potential in my work and felt it would work well with the reast of the crews style and invited me along to an event with them.

Mainly based in Wales, during the summer periods we travel around the welsh countryside attending music festivals where we create live murals over the course of the event. We have also held are own workshops inviting people to come and give spray-painting a go. We have also held art exhibitions showcasing the groups work or work of projects we have been apart of.

The Happy Medium crew was invited to attend Ymuno festival 2014, a small family friendly festival hosted inLlandudno, Wales. The designs could be of our own making but of course appropriate for all ages. As a crew we decided to use the festivals logo a bee as

inspiration and create our pieces around that imagery. We also took the time to run a small workshop as part of the billing to teach people of all ages about the study of art and the use of the materials we were using.

This is until I decided to use my love for the game Destiny as inspiration. In RPG games I am a massive hoarder of items and I miss the days when you could buy a poster or magazine which acted as a checklist or showed you the options of a certain item so you knew which one you could aim to achieve. Seeing as I couldn’t find one of these, I decided to take it upon myself to de-sign my own. Where I col-lected the various designs of the ghost. Detailing the look of each shell, a small description and its in game rarity.
