Modern Theories, Real Problems and Frontier Investigations

Yong Zhong Editor-in-Chief

Rural Education is a journal wellknown for aspiring to combine theory development and reality intervention, aiming to contribute to enhancement and improvement of authentic knowledge suitable for creating best practices in different spheres of rural education. It is this context in which the journal has been to publish studies based on scientifically analyzed data collected from fieldwork in frontier rural regions including ones inhabited by underdeveloped, underpriviledged communities and ethnic people. As it enters 2015, the journal again presents a range of high quality papers authored by scholars in China, India and USA, which feature the following themes, research methodologies and study findings.

Equality, equitable spread of resources and opportunities continue to be a central theme of this issue. Different scales and kinds of mental health problem were dealt with in Shaoling Tang et al; partial failure to address the inequitability of education funding through the new scheme in Yiran Li; unbalanced development of higher education enrolment in Yue Cao/Fengliang Li; different education returns for college students of urban and rural backgrounds in Jie Lin; challenges faced by rural education in the digital age in Sandeep Mertia and Jean-Marck Bernard respectively; and lack of ethnic culture in education of the Uighur in Mei Ding.

A wide range of research designs, methodologies and procedures were adopted by different authors. Almost all the papers were based on analysis of data collected systematically and scientifically from fieldwork and published statistics. Quantitative surveys were adopted by Shaoling Tang et al, Yiran Li and Jie Lin; anthropological observation by Mei Ding and Gini Index-based reinterpretation of published official data in Yue Cao/Fengliang Li. Data thus collected were treated through purposefully selected scientific tools and procedures, including use of statistics methods in Shaoling Tang et al; Yiran Li; Yue Cao/Fengliang Li; and Jie Lin and use of qualitative coding and interpretation in Yiran Li and Mei Ding.

The selection of research questions and use of scientific methods resulted in significant insightful findings, details of which and of they mean should be approached directly by reading the papers. Only a selection of findings will be presented blow as an indication of the width and depth of the papers.

1) Rural primary school kids suffered an excessive array of mental problems, some of which were caused by impoverishment but others were caused by familial and social problems like absence of parental care and neglect.

2) The implementation of more equal-looking funding policies does not necessarily address the neglect of underprivileged individual schools and persons and some of the promised fund may not find its way to the most needing schools and individuals.

3) The correlation between economic growth and access to education may not exist and some municipalities of a developed province may not necessarily create more education opportunities.
