“WE MOVE MOUNTAINS”

It is hard to believe that we are only two weeks from our winter break. Students and teachers will be working hard in their academic and extra-curricular prepara-tions. CO U N S E L L O R’S NOT E S November was a busy month, with Dwayne Peace (former police officer with the Calgary Police Service) presenting the “Dare to Care” program. While all junior and senior high school students were exposed to Dwayne’s message, the grades 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 students were also involved in powerful, in-depth discussions of tolerance, respect, and personal dignity. I was present at each of these sessions, and I am proud of the way each and every Rundle Academy student absorbed, reflected and supported the positive messages brought to us by Mr. Peace. Mr. Peace also spoke highly of the cooperation and maturity that our students exhibited. These sessions were very worthwhile and the school counsellor Ms. Caines (who is currently out on parental leave until May of 2013) is commended on hav-ing the insight and foresight to bring in Mr. Peace and his “Dare to Care” program.

Our popular Speaker Series has some exciting upcoming events and even one NEWLY ADDED one. Based on popular demand, Dr. Miller, our school counsellor, is pro-viding his talk on post-secondary planning NEXT WEEK. On Wednesday, December 12th, at 7:00 p.m., Dr. Miller will speak about post-secondary planning that will ad-dress points to consider for Grade 10, 11 and 12 stu-dents. He ran a similar talk last month and received such great reviews that a number of parents have asked him to offer it again. If you are a high schooler’s parent, mark this date in your calendars. Come January, Rundle Academy is offering two new nights in the Speaker Series. Dr. Miller is back again with Assistant Principal, Mr. Sylven, to speak to you on the brink of diploma and mid-term exams. This January 9th, talk will address how to best prepare for exams and how to relieve some of that stress and test anxiety that is so common. Mark your calendars.

Finally, the January 21st Speaker Series is for Grades 6 and 9 parents. It is hard to believe, but preparing for Jun-ior High and Senior High transitioning will already be starting in January. Grade 6 students and their parents are invited to hear Mr. van der Meer, Head of Junior High, introduce you to life in the Junior High years. The focus is on how it may differ from Elementary and how the transi-tion is made easier at Rundle Academy. A parallel talk will occur that same evening for the parents of our Grade 9 students who are preparing for High School. Our Head of Senior High, Ms. Nicole Davidson, will lead the talk that will orient you to the credit system of Alberta high schools and what courses are offered at Rundle Academy. A must night to attend, for sure. Thank you to all parents and the parent council for their continued support in our Speaker Series. See you senior high school parents next week!

After I graduated from Rundle Academy, I at-tended Medicine Hat Col-lege. I graduated with my LPN Diploma and I have been working fulltime as an LPN for more than five years in the areas of Pal-liative, Internal Medicine and Pulmonary care. I recently got a job with Bow Valley College as a nurse instructor. In my off time, I have been travel-ing through South East Asia, Nicaragua and I will be off to Japan in January to teach skiing for six weeks! In my travels, I

always volunteer my time in some way or another. The biggest lesson that I took away from attending the Academy was how lucky I was to be aware of what kind of learner I am. This gave me confidence to ask for what I needed at Post Secondary. Ask-ing for help will only make things easier for you to embrace the learning op-portunity we are so fortu-nate to be able to learn in. I miss the community feeling at Rundle Acad-emy! Everyone was so

supportive and helpful. Over the years I devel-oped a close group of friends and we became a family!

On Monday, December 3rd, the grades four and five classes embraced the cold weather for a field trip to the zoo. The morning was spent indoors experimenting with solar and wind technology. The students tested circuits, magnets, and mini versions of photovoltaics and wind turbines to determine the best weather for maximum voltage! They discovered how whale fins and butterfly wings are inspiring future innovations in energy conservation. Students observed alterna-tive technologies first-hand, and learned ways to conserve energy in their own homes. The afternoon was spent ex-ploring animals in their habitats before returning to the school.

2012-2013 Junior High Intramurals The Junior High Intramurals has been in full force this year, encouraging participation, sportsmanship and healthy competition in a variety of sports. The stu-dents signup to play intramurals, which take place every Tuesday and Thursday at lunch. Points are awarded for participation and victories. The first tournament was for volleyball and we had many great battles. Entered in this tournament were three Grizzlies teams, two Rams and two Mountain Lions. The Mountain Lions prevailed in the final match. Up next was the much anticipated Dodgeball tourna-ment, which featured many great teams, again three Grizzlies, two Rams and two Mountain Lions. The final championship match between the Rams and Mountain Lions was high-paced, action-packed and full of many great ducks, dives and dodges. Because of time restraints we had to cut the final match short and the Mountain Lions, again, prevailed with more players left standing in the third and deciding game. At the rally, both teams joined forces to take on the teachers. Unfortunately, they had nothing left in the tank and were soundly defeated by the teachers. We have recently begun 3-on-3 basketball and it has proven to be an exciting tournament as well. This will run into Christmas. We hope to see the enthusiasm and participation of the student body continue to be strong for Intramurals.

In late November, the Social Studies 7 classes had an opportunity to visit Heritage Park and become vo-yageurs for a day. They braved a cold day listening to Metis tales of working for the Hudson Bay Com-pany in their attempt to control Canada’s fur trade. Students also learned to make canoe cups, paddle, pack their 90 pound carry-on and trade their home-made beaver pelts. The fur trade unit will culminate this month with their upcoming Rendez Vous where fur traders, Mr. Palmer, Mr. Mellor and Mr. Burla, will prepare our future fur traders in the arts of meat dry-ing, bannock frying, pemmican making, canoe port-aging, singing and dancing in the form of Canadien Voyageur – an important part of our Canadian heri-tage.

The Senior High Wilderness Option Class recently planned and prepared for an outdoor excursion into the Canadian wilderness. With all of our gear packed up and perfect winter conditions, the group of grade 11 and 12 students set out on the highway Thursday after school on November 29th, and headed West. The group arrived at the isolated Mosquito Creek Hostel 24 km north of Lake Louise. Great planning provided everyone with excellent food in our bellies and enjoyment of every moment. Im-promptu tobogganing, a wood burning sauna and games around the fire set the tone for the evening prior to our snowshoe hike.

Friday morning the group again filled up with amazing food prior to setting out to blaze a trail in fresh powder towards Molar Pass. Although the group did not reach their intended destination, the powder caked trees and the foggy peaks provided an excellent opportunity to ap-preciate Banff National Park in the Canadian winter.

Daniel Chepyha, Nick Duus, Jonathan Hardock, Jonathan Hockey, Will Midkiff and Struan Wood were all excellent outdoor enthusiasts throughout the trip. A special thanks to Mr. Palmer for accompanying us and for all his insight-ful wisdom.

Rockies Wrestling kicked off its sea-son in late October. November has been a very busy month for each of our programs including Elementary, Junior High and Senior High wrestling teams. The program was proud to have the coaching additions of Mr. Sylven, Mr. James and Ms. Hoehn. Elementary wrestlers have had a fan-tastic season. Many of our early ris-ers at practice were the dedicated athletes from both grades five and six. They hit the mat with introductory tournaments at the Calgary Science School, the Coyote Classic for Ele-

mentary and new Junior High stu-dents, and then finished strong at the Rundle Academy Rockies Tourna-ment. The coaching staff have been impressed with the Elementary dedi-cation and keenness with the sport and look forward to seeing them wrestle in the Junior High. Junior High wrestlers have been com-peting hard with the goal of wrestling for gold at our CISAA Champion-ships! The team competed at the Calgary Science School, Coyote Classic, Rundle Academy Rockies Tournament and the Phoenix Tourna-

ment at Captain Nichola School. We have had some great results and many gold medals, including students Gannon Willson, Bram Bouma, Dylan Graham, Sadie Matus, Sierra Ada-mow-Boudreau and Anthoney Stan. High School wrestlers have been in training the last month in preparation for their season. They had some ex-hibition matches at our home tourna-ment and, this past weekend, Sam Adams competed at the Western Canada's Redmen Classic. We look forward to seeing the team develop further in the months to come. Thanks to wrestlers, parents and staff who came out to support our Rundle Academy Rockies Tournament. We had many team members win ribbons and gain valuable experience. The team and coaches would like to thank Ms. Thompson, Ms. Osaka, Ms. Phil-lips, Mrs. Vesey, Ms. Prest, Mrs. Kopp, Mr. van der Meer, Mr. Vesey, Mrs. Vivian Larmour, Amanda van der Meer, and Jon-Jacob Bruyn for their valuable assistance with running a terrific tournament.

Congratulations to the Rundle Football Team on an outstanding season. The team was able to win its first Big Rock League Championship over Tier II Provincial contenders Foothills and Holy Trinity. This was an amazing accomplishment and we are very proud of our young men for their courage and heart. Unfortunately for the team, our season was cut short by a heart-breaking 16-14 loss against Cochrane High School. In the dying seconds of the game, our 40 yard field goal hit the left upright, de-nying us a chance at the victory and a run at Provincials. Coch-rane then went on to march through their opponents and claim the Tier III provincial championship. The boys fought their hearts out in that game, however, and left everything on the field. The entire Rundle coaching staff is very proud of the way our boys played and we are already excited about next year and the experi-enced team we will have going into next season. The goal next year will be to defend our Big Rock League Championship and, once again, challenge for the Tier III Provincial Championship. We will work our hardest to make that goal a reality. Thank you to all the students, parents and staff for their encour-agement and support in helping us fully experience this great sea-son.

Junior High Boys Basketball is off to a great start. With interest from more than 30 boys between the grades of 5 to 9, the coaches decided to split off into two teams. This year, Mr. Paz will be coaching the Grade 8/9 team and Mr. Locking / Mr. Rogers are co-coaching the Grade 5-8 team. Both teams are already registered in several tournaments and league games. More information on schedules, team meetings, tourna-ments and team fees will be coming from the coaches in the coming days. This season both of the teams will be using ‘TeamSnap’ to communicate with the players and parents. TeamSnap can be downloaded to smart phones and can be viewed online. If you have not already received your invitation to join our site, please contact your son’s coach.

SE N I O R HI G H GI R L S BA S K E T BA L L As the 2012 Senior Girls Basketball season kicks off, we welcome a whole bunch of new Rockies to the team. With only two veteran players returning to provide leader-ship, Ally Duckworth and Marisa Jones, we are rebuilding our team with the inclusion of the grade nine players: Kennedy Huntley, Alycia Udy, Madison Hillstead, Madison Shields-Knutson and Cali Champagne. Fortunately, we have a few grade ten players who played for Rundle Academy last year, Taylor Quantz, Mia Berloni and Car-men Farmer, who will add much knowledge and skill to the team. In addition, we have a few new faces repre-senting Rundle Academy on the court with Cristi Louw, Mollie Smith and Amanda Wheatley. Our sole grade twelve player, Alexis John, is unable to play this year, but has proven to be a dedicated mentor and coach to the girls in the practices so far this season.

With 3 tournaments, at least 15 games and practice at least 3 times a week, the Senior High Girls team is going to be busy. So far their energy, enthusiasm and sports-manship has been admirable. The team’s goal this year is to learn from one another and their opponents and to improve in all aspects of the game. We will continue to be competitive, especially during tournaments where we will be playing against other Junior Varsity teams. The season officially begins with the first league game on Monday, December 3, 2012. The Senior Girls’ Basketball team hopes to see you out to cheer them on throughout the season. Go Rockies!

Page 11: Rundle Academy December Newsletter

Following an impressive turnout of more than 13 boys for the Senior High Boys Basketball team, the 2012-2013 Senior Boys team has been established. With a returning core group of players from last year and inspired by the addition of six grade 10 students, the varsity squad is ea-ger to be competitive once again this year. “They are a talented group of young players with some good skill and speed so I am looking forward to seeing what they can do this season,” says Coach Vesey. Starting post player, Sam Taylor, said, “I think we are a good, talented group and I actually think we have a better team than last year,” when asked for his thoughts on the team. “We are still going to have to work very hard and prove we can be competitive this year,” he added. With many long term Rundle Academy basketball players, the team has some veteran leadership and experience to build from. The future of the program looks very bright with some extremely talented young men poised to take leadership roles over the next few years. The Senior Boys have experienced what is in store for them this year, with two exhibition games against some local rivals. The Rockies, however, are still looking for their first win as they start the season Monday, December 3rd, against Master’s College. Good luck boys!
