New clubmembers please call Bea Fruchter at (626) 797-2048 for moreinformation about this monthly get-together open to allladies (and guests). We talk about kids, grand kids, vacations, medical problems, food, men, and almost anything thatdoesn’t include Model A’s. The food is good and they giveus ‘separate checks’ with no hassle.

Santa Anita A’s Holiday Food CollectionEach year our club collects and donates food items for

the Foothill Unity Center, Inc. They provide food items forfamilies in the San Gabriel Valley who are in need. Again thisyear, we are asking our members to donate non-perishablefood items (canned or boxed) to bring to the NovemberGeneral Meeting and/or to our Holiday Party. These itemscan be cereal, mac & cheese, canned goods, etc. and evencandy to help make the holidays happier for those in need. The Center makes up family food boxes and thendistributes them appropriately. Thanksgiving and Christmasare times when we especially want to help the less fortunate.

Thank you for helping our club continue an old tradition.

Think About ItOn second thought, don’t even think about thinking about it.

Corky & Sharon Gray

Up until a year ago Corky &Sharon didn’t own a Model A.Now they own two of them!Sound familiar to anyone? Abouta year ago they purchased a 1931Tudor, becoming only the thirdowner of the car! Although theinterior has been redone, it hasthe original paint job, with an 84year-old patina.

About four months ago a friend told them of a relativewho had passed away leaving two Model A’s as orphans.Corky & Sharon took pity on them and acquired a 1930Pickup in very nice condition.

Corky worked for the Pasadena Police Departmentbefore he retired. He was a training officer for photo radar, used to apprehend speeders.

One of Corky’s hobbies is martial arts, a skill he puts touse in his business as a bodyguard. He works with clientssuch as Alicia Keys, the Jacksons, Rhiana, Toby McGuire, etc.His clients travel regularly and he, consequently, does a lotof traveling also.

Sharon retired from the City of Pasadena after 35 years. But “retired” has a different meaning for Corky & Sharon. They own Eaton Dam Stables, where they keep their ownseven horses and about 30 others for customers. I asked himif this was a part-time job and he replied, “I wish!”. Thehorses require twice-a-day care so they are very busy withtheir stables.

Sharon’s hobby is “reining,” a horse discipline. She trainshorses for reining and also competes in horse shows. Shetravels the west, Las Vegas, etc., competing in reiningcompetitions. What is “reining” you ask. So did I. It is acompetition where horses are led through a “cowboy”pattern, making circles of different sizes and speeds, stoppingsuddenly where their rear end goes to the ground, etc.

They have a 20 year-old son who does security work withCorky and attends PCC.

Both Corky & Sharon are California natives. In fact, Corkywas born in Arcadia and still lives there.

Past events A’s Visit Graber Olive HouseNovember 7 by Jim Kroeger

Have you everwondered how thoseolives in jars or cans, that end up on yourpizza or in your salad, are processed? Thirty-six members of theSanta Anita A’s foundout as we toured thehistoric Graber OliveHouse in Ontario.

Twelve Model A’s made the trip on a gorgeous fall dayas we headed out on Arrow Highway to our destination.Upon arrival we split up into two groups and had to donblue hairnets to adhere to the health code. Once everyonewas covered up, and Steve Concidine’s beard was safelytucked away, we headed in for the tour.

We toured the selection, curing, canning and packingrooms and visited the large boiler that supplies steam forthe plant. They still process olives the old-fashioned wayhere and you could really taste the difference as we tried afew samples in the gift shop.

After the tour we headed up to Molly’s Souper in Uplandfor a fantastic lunch to end the day. All in all it added up toa wonderful tour.

The origin of America’sThanksgiving DayArriving in Massachusetts in late November, the Pilgrimssought a suitable landing place. On December 11, just beforedisembarking at Plymouth Rock, they signed the “MayflowerCompact”—America’s first document of civil governmentand the first to introduce self-government.

After a prayer service, the Pilgrims began building hastyshelters. However, unprepared for the starvation andsickness of a harsh New England winter, nearly half diedbefore spring. Yet, persevering in prayer, and assisted byhelpful Indians, they reaped a bountiful harvest the followingsummer.

The grateful Pilgrims then declared a three-day feast, startingon December 13, 1621, to thank God and to celebrate withtheir Indian friends. While this was not the first Thanksgivingin America (Thanksgiving services were held in Virginia asearly as 1607), it was America’s first Thanksgiving Festival.

In 1789, following a proclamation issued by President GeorgeWashington, America celebrated its first Day of Thanksgivingto God under its new constitution. That same year, theProtestant Episcopal Church, of which President Washingtonwas a member, announced that the first Thursday inNovember would become its regular day for giving thanks,“unless another day be appointed by the civil authorities.”Yet, despite these early national proclamations, officialThanksgiving observances usually occurred only at the Statelevel.

Much of the credit for the adoption of a later annual nationalThanksgiving Day may be attributed to Mrs. Sarah JosephHale, the editor of Godey’s Lady’s Book. For thirty years, shepromoted the idea of a national Thanksgiving Day, contactingPresident after President until President Abraham Lincolnresponded in 1863 by setting aside the last Thursday ofNovember as a national Day of Thanksgiving. Over the nextseventy-five years, Presidents followed Lincoln’s precedent, annually declaring a national Thanksgiving Day. Then, in1941, Congress permanently established the fourth Thursdayof each November as a national holiday.

The History of Veterans Day

November 11, or what has come to be known as VeteransDay, was originally set as a U.S. legal holiday to honorArmistice Day - the end of World War I, which officially tookplace on November 11, 1918. President Woodrow Wilsonhonored the first commemoration of Armistice Day with thefollowing words: "To us in America, the reflections ofArmistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroismof those who died in the country’s service and with gratitudefor the victory, both because of the thing from which it hasfreed us and because of the opportunity it has given Americato show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councilsof the nations..."

In 1954, Congress, at the urging of the veterans serviceorganizations, struck out the word "Armistice" and insertedthe word "Veterans." With the approval of this legislation onJune 1, 1954, November 11 became a day to honor Americanveterans of all wars.

Between 1968 and 1975, Veterans Day was moved aroundon the calendar, sometimes even appearing on the lastMonday of October. Finally on September 20, 1975,President Gerald R. Ford signed a law which returned theannual observance of Veterans Day to its original date ofNovember 11, beginning in 1978.

Veterans Day continues to be observed on November 11,regardless of what day of the week on which it falls. Therestoration of the observance of Veterans Day to November11 not only preserves the historical significance of the date, but helps focus attention on the important purpose ofVeterans Day: A celebration to honor America's veterans fortheir patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve andsacrifice for the common good.

President Eisenhower signsHR7786, officialy changingArmistice Day to Veterans Day. The First Thanksgiving 1621, oil on

canvas by Jean Leon Gerome Ferris(1899). The painting shows commonmisconceptions about the event thatpersist to modern times: Pilgrims didnot wear such outfits, and theWampanoag are dressed in the style ofNative Americans from the Great Plains.

Santa Anita A’s Veteran

Gordon N. Johnson USMC 1944-1946

The San Gabriel area is where I grew up. I had graduated from Alhambra High School just before I enteredthe Marines Corps. I was 18 when I entered the USMC on January 10, 1944. Boot camp was in San Diego, withmortar training at Camp Pendleton. My unit, the Third Marine Division shipped out to the pacific on September1, 1944; with a two week stop over at Pearl Harbor. We then continued on to the Marianas Island campaign. After the initial invasion of Guam on July 21, 1944, my unit went in for the mop-up operation with a lot ofjungle patrolling and constant intensive training at an outpost in the middle of the jungle.

On February 19, 1945 the 3rd Marine Division took part in the invasion of Iwo Jima along with the 4th and 5th,Marine Divisions, each landing in different sectors at different times. We watched from onboard transport shipsas battleships further out shelled Iwo before the amphibious landing of the Marines began. The battle there wasduring cold and rainy weather. When the Island was secured those of us who survived were returned to Guam inApril 1945. The 3rd Division was now being trained for the invasion of Japan. However, on August 14 theJapanese surrendered, with the official signing of the surrender on September 2, 1945.

On October 10, 1945, twenty four of us were volunteered from the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, andwere landed on the island of Chichi Jima. Our purpose was to secure the island and collect war crime prisoners. Our squad of eight Marines captured one Japanese general plus five other high ranking officers. We held themuntil reinforcements arrived two weeks later and a stockade was built. In May 1946, the same 24 Marinesbrought these six war crime prisoners back to Guam to stand trial. It was our duty to escort the prisoners to andfrom the court room plus guard them during the trial proceedings.

At the end of May 1946 I had enough points for discharge and was returned to the United States on a formerItalian luxury liner converted to a troop ship and disembarked at Treasure Island, San Francisco and from theretaken by another ship to San Diego where I was discharged on June 5, 1946 with the rank of corporal.

When I returned from the war I went to work for my father who was in the construction business. Later Iobtained a contractor’s license and went into business for myself. I have been retired for the past 25 years. Myfirst wife died in 1973; we had one son. My current wife, Helen, and I have been married for over 40 years andwe are charter members of the Santa Anita A’s.

Japanese General Yoshio Tachibana captured on ChichiJima at wars end in October 1945 by Gordon Johnson(right) and his squad of eight Marines. Tachibana was triedfor war crimes and executed on Guam on September 24, 1947. Gordon Johnson USMC 1944

Using your cell Phone can be DangerousThe Shell Oil Company recently issued a warning after

three incidents in which mobile (cell phones) ignited fumesduring fueling operations.

In the first case, the cell phone was placed on the car'strunk lid during fueling; it rang and the ensuing fire destroyedthe car and the gasoline pump.

In the second, an individual suffered severe bums totheir face when fumes Ignited as they answered a call whilethey were fueling their car.

And in the third, an individual suffered burns to theirthigh and groin a fumes Ignited when the phone, which wasIn their pocket, rang while fueling their car.You should know that: Mobile Phones can Ignite fuel or fumes.

Mobile phones that light up when switched on or whenthey ring release enough energy to provide a spark forIgnition. Mobile phones should not be used In filling stations,or when fueling lawn mowers, boat, etc.

Mobile phones should not be used, or should be turnedoff, around other materials that generate flammable orexplosive fumes or dust, (i.e.., solvents, chemicals, gases,grain dust, etc...}

To sum it up, here are the Four Rules for Safe refueling:

1) Turn off engine2) Don't smoke3} Don't use your cell phone - leave It Inside the vehicle orturn it off4) Don't re-enter your vehicle during fueling.

Bob Renkes of Petroleum Equipment Institute Is workingon a campaign to try and make people aware of fires as aresult of “static electricity” at gas pumps. His company hasresearched 150 cases of these fires.

His results were very surprising:1) Out of 150 cases, almost all of them were women.2) Almost all cases Involved the person getting back In theirvehicle while the nozzle was still pumping gas. When finished, they went back to pull the nozzle out and the fire started asa result of a static spark from their bodies from sliding outof the vehicle.3) Most had on rubber-soled shoes.4) Most men never get back In their vehicle until completelyfinished. This Is why they are seldom involved In these types of fires.5) Don't ever use cell phones when pumping gas.6) It Is the vapors that come out of the gas that cause thefire, when connected with static charges.7) There were 29 fires where the vehicle was re-entered andthe nozzle was touched during refueling from a variety ofmakes and models. Some resulted In extensive damage tothe vehicle, to the station, and to the customer.

8) Seventeen fires occurred before, during or Immediatelyafter the gas cap was removed and before fueling began.

Mr. Renkes stresses to NEVER get back Into yourvehicle while filling It with gas. If you absolutely HAVEto get In your vehicle while the gas Is pumping, makesure you get out, dose the door TOUCHING THE METAL,before you ever pull the nozzle out. This way the staticfrom your body will be discharged before you everremove the nozzle.

As I mentioned earlier, The Petroleum EquipmentInstitute along with several other companies now, are reallytrying to make the public aware of this danger.

I ask you to please send this Information to all yourfamily and friends, especially those who have kids In the car.
