Dear Members and Friends of The Metropolitan Museum of Art,

Forged from lava and shaped by glaciers, Iceland is, quite literally, a land of fire and ice—a dramatic landscape of volcanoes, geysers, and waterfalls that birthed vivid sagas of heroes and thieves. Next September, when Icelandic temperatures are mild and the aurora borealis is at its most active, please join us on a specially designed Met Adventure to one of the youngest and most geologically dynamic places on earth.

This program was developed with Pari Stave, Senior Administrator in the Department of Modern and Contemporary Art, who will be joining us for this exceptional tour. Ms. Stave is an art historian and former consulting curator for the American-Scandinavian Foundation where her recent exhibitions at Scandinavia House include Iceland: Artists Respond to Place, Munch|Warhol and the Multiple Image, and New Wave Finland: Contemporary Photography from the Helsinki School. Ms. Stave looks forward to introducing travelers to artist friends and colleagues in Iceland.

We hope to welcome you on this once-in-a-lifetime journey.

Sincerely,

Nina McN. Diefenbach Vice President for Institutional Advancement

REYKJAVIKThursday, September 22

This morning we are invited for a before-hours curatorial tour of the National Museum of Iceland. Continue to Kjarvalssta!ir, part of the Reykjavík Art Museum, showcasing key works by one of Iceland’s most beloved landscape painters, Jóhannes S. Kjarval (1885–1972), as well as changing exhibitions that explore various thematic and historic aspects of Icelandic art. Lunch is at leisure. This evening celebrate with a farewell dinner at one of Reykjavík’s finest restaurants, dining on a substantial tasting menu of Icelandic specialties.

REYKJAVIK X U.S.A.Friday, September 23

Following a morning at leisure, visit the Blue Lagoon Geothermal Spa Resort for a chance to relax and refresh before continuing to the airport and the flight home. X

THINGVELLIR X HELLASunday, September 18

Attend a morning lecture before a visit to the Secret Lagoon, one of Iceland’s oldest natural hot springs in the small village of Flú!ir. Enjoy this beautiful natural setting, with a geyser that erupts every five minutes, or take a dip in the geothermal pools. Lunch is in a local restaurant. Continue to the deluxe Hotel Ranga near Hella on the south coast—an area famous for viewing the Northern Lights. Dinner is at the hotel.

THORSMORK OR SKOGAFOSSMonday, September 19

Today you may choose between two programs. Your first option is to travel by jeep on a full-day excursion to Thorsmork, the “Valley of the Gods.” More than 170 species of plants, moss, and lichen are found in this fjord area dating from 12,000 years ago. Following a barbeque lunch, explore the black sand beaches at the base of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano, which last erupted in 2010. Alternatively, drive south to the Sólheimajökul glacier, where we can walk behind Skogafoss, one of the giant waterfalls. At the nearby Skógar Museum, learn of Iceland’s past through its collection of works of art and craft, furniture, tools and personal possessions. After lunch, return to the hotel with the afternoon at leisure and the evening open for sky watching. Dinner is at the hotel.

SOUTH COAST X REYKJAVIKTuesday, September 20

Depart this morning for Fridheimar Greenhouse. Famous for their tasty tomatoes, the brightly illuminated greenhouses are, like every building in Iceland, heated by geothermal energy. By special invitation, visit the studio and home of a prominent contemporary artist, located on an Icelandic horse farm. Following refreshments, our hosts will show us their studio and private collection, and then introduce us to the Icelandic horse, a breed brought from Scandinavia by the first settlers around 900 AD. Continue to Reykjavík and check in to the deluxe Hotel Borg. This evening enjoy dinner with local artists.

REYKJAVIKWednesday, September 21

Today embark on an architectural walking tour of Reykjavík, including Hallgrímskirkja church and Harpa, the city’s concert hall and cultural center, where we will have a behind-the-scenes tour. Then we hope to visit local artists in their studios, along with some of Reykjavík’s fine art galleries (pending confirmation). Following lunch, a short boat ride takes us to Videy Island to see an art installation by Richard Serra, Afanger (Standing Stones), named for a celebrated Icelandic poem. Return to Reykjavík for dinner and the evening at leisure.

U.S.A.Thursday, September 15

Depart on an overnight flight to Reykjavík.

REYKJAVIK X NESJAVELLIRFriday, September 16

Upon arrival this morning, we meet our Icelandic guide and drive to Hellisheidi Geothermal Power Plant, north of Reykjavík. Enjoy a brief tour of this clean, green source of energy for Iceland. Continue to Nesjavellir and the ION Hotel, overlooking Thingvellir Lake, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Following lunch, the afternoon is at leisure. In the evening Pari Stave will give an introductory talk at the hotel, followed by our welcome dinner. The ION Hotel features a fresh, farm-to-table approach to modern Nordic cuisine. Tonight we have our first oportunity to see the Northern Lights.

THINGVELLIR NATIONAL PARKSaturday, September 17

Today begins at Thingvellir National Park, the volcanic valley where the Althingi, an open-air assembly representing all of Iceland and the world’s oldest parliament, was established in 930 A.D. The park straddles the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a giant fissure forming between the Euro-Asian and American tectonic plates. Continue to Geysír to explore the geothermal pools around one of the most active geyser areas in the region. After a traditional Icelandic meal in the countryside, visit spectacular Gullfoss, one of the largest waterfalls in Europe. In the late afternoon, a scholar tells us about medieval Iceland and the Icelandic sagas, a literary phenomenon focused on the histories of the Icelandic settlers. Return to the hotel for dinner.
