PRINCIPAL’S NEWS

What a busy two weeks since our last newsletter. Yesterday we had our whole school Athletics Carnival. It

was great to see so many students participating in track and field events, and of course Ms Jeacle’s

‘wobble dance’ competition. Congratulations to Murray house for winning the carnival.

As you will see in this edition, there have been many sporting events and outdoor education activities.

We have also started out auditions for this year’s production of Fame. The College continues to offer an

enormous range of learning and participation opportunities for all students.

This week we welcomed our new and returning council members. Thank you to these parents, students and staff who have

volunteered to play a crucial role in our school. One of the agenda items this week was the presentation of our next 4 year

strategic plan. This document outlines the key improvement work we will be focusing on, as we continue to focus on being the

best we can be with an emphasis on excellent learning opportunities.

This term the College community has worked hard to improve our whole school attendance percentages. I am pleased to in-

form you that our overall Term 1 attendance is 90% compared to last year at 88%. Thank you to the families who have contact-

ed me regarding family holidays. I would also like to thank all of the parents who are supporting the more thorough implemen-

tation of our uniform policy. The majority of students are looking great in their uniforms. A reminder that logo socks are not

permitted. Whilst we have been willing to allow students to fold over their socks in some cases, I ask parents to please ensure

that students have plain socks next term. Wearing uniform correctly is one step in increasing student pride and we will remain

committed to this work.

Speaking of pride, this Sunday the College is hosting the annual Neighbourhood Day. Pop in and visit the activities, market stalls

and open mic opportunities. We are proud to support this initiative and look forward to seeing some of you on the day.

Finally, I would like to inform the school community that our Business Manager, Deborah Barry is taking some leave and then

retiring soon. On behalf of the community I would like to thank Deb for her commitment to the College. I would also like to

thank Deb for all of her support she has given me over the past 9 months.

Lisa Holt Principal

SCHOOL COUNCIL NEWS Parent members are elected to school council for a period of two years with half the members retiring each year.

Our two new parent members of School Council – Andy Brydson and Bill Faulkner. Andy is new to our school council and Bill was successful in being renominated.

As nominations equalled the number of vacancies, there was no need to hold an election.

Our 2018 School Council consists of :

Parents: Andy Brydson, Bill Faulkner, Mary Nougher and Rosemary Truscott.

DET members: Lisa Holt as Principal and Sam Rowe.

Bill was elected to the position of President and will be ably assisted by Mary Nougher as Vice President.

There is also provision for 2 Community Members.

Congratulations to everyone.

SENIOR SCHOOL NEWS

SOME KEY REMINDERS FOR OUR YEAR 10 - 12 STUDENTS AND PARENTS

Here at RSC we are committed to providing our students with the best opportunities to support students in achieving their per-sonal best. As a result, this year we have redesigned the Senior School Assessment and Attendance Policy to align with the De-partment of Education and Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority guidelines. All Year 10 - 12 students have received a copy of this policy, for parents to sight and sign and then return to the Senior School Curriculum Leader, Ms. Greenhill.

Please join in with us to support your child with achieving their personal best by:

Regularly viewing their Compass to ensure they achieve the minimum attendance requirements of 90%.

Reminding students if they miss formal assessments including SACs or SATs these need to be approved absences (ie: medical certificate).

Students are responsible for following up red progress reviews with their classroom teacher by completing the tasks and then getting the item marked as ‘resolved’. You can check if your son or daughter has achieved green progress reviews (positive) or red progress reviews (items that need to be followed up) by accessing their Compass homepage

Attendance redemption is available on Thursday after school for any student below the 90% attendance requirement. Students can apply for this opportunity by seeing their Year Level Coordinators

SAC Redemption is also available on Thursday after school for any student who has missed an assessment due to ab-sences. Students can apply for this by seeing the Senior School Curriculum Leader.

We congratulate the student body for starting the year off on a positive note. This should be extended to all the Year 11 and 12 students who have stayed back in the Year 12 Study Centre on Thursday afternoons (Day 4) to attend the Study Club for Unit 3/4 studies. We have been excited to see the amount of GREEN progress reviews published on students’ Compass to recognise high levels effort in their pursuit of achieving their personal best.

Do you find yourself saying “explain the confusing VCE jargon to me?”

Fun fact informed by research: Research by leading psychologist from Stanford University, Carol Dweck, has concluded one of the most influential factors for academic success is BELIEF and having what she calls a GROWTH MINDSET. Please remind your son or daughter of this when they are stressing before an assessment. Intelligence has little to do with academic success. The key is: effort, overcoming obstacles, taking on feedback and being resilient in their learning.

Senior Years Team: Mr. Seletto (Senior Assistant Principal), Ms. Greenhill (Senior School Curriculum Leader), Mr. Lee and Mr. Egan (Year 12 Coordinators), Mr. Neale and Ms. Gibson (Year 11 Coordinators), Ms. Simmons and Ms. Hipwell (Year 10 Coordinators) and Mr. Kirk and Mr. Glover (Pathways and VCAL coordinator and VCAL curriculum coordinator).

Outcomes To satisfactorily complete a unit of work students must demonstrate the re-quired knowledge and skills. These are published in relevant subjects study designs on the VCAA website.

School Assessed Coursework (SACs) School Assessed Tasks (SATs)

Means by which students level of achievement for each outcome is judged. These tasks generate students graded achievement. A SAC is made up of various types of assessment tasks as specified by VCAA and the teacher (for example; test, experiment, case study analysis, essay). They are completed (generally) over one or more periods during class time. SACs are used to assess the unit outcomes and are part of the regular teaching and learning program SATs are used in subjects where products and models are assessed (e.g. Art, Studio Arts, Visual Communication and Design and Product, Design and Tech-nology) and these are stated in the particular subject’s Study Design. They are generally completed over an extended period of time and teachers use VCAA mandated assessment criteria when marking.

Reporting students results

VCE Unit results are reported to VCAA as: S = Satisfactory completion N = Not satisfactory If a teacher judges all outcomes are achieved = S for unit

YEAR 11 OUTDOOR ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING PROGRAM @ WILSONS PROM MARCH 7, 8 & 9.

Earlier this month we had 33 students, six staff, and three magic days of sunshine discovering outdoor experiences at Wilsons Prom. Highlights included sunset at Mt. Oberon, an education session with Parks Victoria Staff about the past uses of the Prom, surfing and snorkelling Norman Bay and the group desserts which included marshmallow and Nutella pancakes! Overall the ELP was a rich ex-perience which upon reflection will form the basis of the second OES SAC for 2018.

YR. 10 OUTDOOR ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES

EXPERIENTIAL PROGRAM @ PT LEO MARCH 14, 15 & 16.

22 Students, 4 staff and so many types of marine creatures! This program was water based and full of action. Highlights included surfing perfect 2 foot Crunchie Point with no one else out, having an education session and a rock pool ramble with Mandy and Russell from the Dolphin Re-search Institute, snor-kelling Flinders pier and Mushroom Reef where we were sur-rounded by up to 50 snapper and spotted sting rays and even a pair of cuttlefish! How-ever the biggest high-

light by far was going out on Luke English's Red Boat to snorkel Pope's Eye and swim with the seals to be greeted by a young hump back whale! It was unbelievable and unforgettable! This ELP with the weather we had was a real pleasure as students and staff experienced the Peninsula at its best! Students will be completing journal entries and reflective learning tasks about what they learnt about themselves, others and the environment.

COLLEGE NEWS

CATERING PROGRAM

2016 was a great year for former RSC students pursuing their food passions and receiving recognition for their dedication and hard work. The young adults starred in Australian food reality television series - Mitch and Laura Skvor (My Kitchen Rules) and Charlie Sartori (Masterchef), demonstrating their food knowledge and skills on a national stage.

…so who might be our next budding television celebrity chef??

The year 10 Catering classes have recently cooked risotto dishes of their choice. There were some classic Italian combinations, lots of chicken, bacon, roasted vegetables and herbs, and some sweet combinations. A number of students were very adven-turous in their choice of recipe to use. They also sampled and critiqued each other’s dishes.

My personal favourites were:

*sweet orange (Sam Brady) *chicken, spinach & lemon (Jami Brydson) *grilled pineapple & toasted coconut, including onion, chicken stock & parmesan cheese – unusual but delicious (Maddi Cain) *classic pizza (Max Riley).

Buon Appetito! Taste testing, a tough gig.

Jan Murray, Food Technology.

WORLD CHALLENGE TRIVIA FUNDRAISER

AT THE RSC HALL ON MARCH 2nd The RSC 2018 World Challenge Team organised a trivia night which was held at the College Hall as a group fundraiser to assist the group on expedition to India in June. It was a very competitive night with the results coming down to the last round. There was a large amount of donations from local businesses to support the night and up to 20 lucky attendees walked away with raffle prizes. A big shout out to Liam Reed (10 yrs old) who won the $100 cash prize, so many lollies will be bought with that prize! Thanks to all people that helped the night happen and bring on India!

SPORTS NEWS

YEAR 8 SPORT On Friday 16th of March was the first opportunity for our talented Year 8 sporting stars to strut their stuff and represent the College. The sun was shining as we departed with seven strong teams keen to make the most of it. Our mixed boys and girls cricket and baseball teams played valiantly against strong opposition finishing with 2nd & 3rd positions overall respectively. We continued our strong showing in the Volleyball with our boys taking the chocolates on the day & our girls coming in a close second. It was extremely positive to see two full boys tennis teams this year as well as a full squad of girls go an compete at the scenic Red Hill courts. After a stack of work behind the scenes done by two coaches, it was pleasing to see the boys walk out winners but more importantly all players leaving the venue having played the maximum amount of games.

I am truly thankful to all of the coaches who continue to go above and beyond and provide an environment that is wel-coming for our students of all abilities be a part of our RSC Sport Program. I also have to thank the RSC students who continue to conduct themselves very well by playing sport in the ‘right’ way and never compromise hard work and com-petitiveness for fair play.

And the winner of House Athletics is ………………………..

Congratulations Murray! A wonderful day was had by all! A full report with lots of wonderful photos will follow in the next

Edition Newsletter.
