Welcome On behalf of RSAA Teaching Schools, I am delighted to welcome you to your first NQT CPD of 2020-21, for the first time, hosted ‘virtually’ through video conferencing.

As an Alliance, we are especially aware of the importance of excellent teachers and supporting practice which helps provide the best possible outcomes for our learners. As an ‘RSA’ family, it is our mission to nurture colleagues through the formative years of your teaching career and to provide a supportive and encouraging environment which allows practitioners to learn from other colleagues, from their own practice and from the fantastic educational relationships they form with their learners. This has never been more relevant in these challenging and unprecedented times—your resilience and commitment to your respective schools and academies is a reflection of the spirit which is intrinsic to the teaching profession; an unswerving dedication to improving outcomes for your learners in a safe, motivational and rewarding environment.

The two CPD sessions offered in November, and in March, aim to support your career stage development and to offer you opportunities for reflection as well as practical tips for classroom practice. Our themes range from behaviour management and student engagement to teacher persona and the role of the RSA in education and social justice; these ’bitesize’ sessions are intended to provide advice and resources on a variety of key issues to equip you with the confidence and skills to make a real impact in the lives of the children and young people in your school.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you and our facilitators; your collective input is greatly valued. I wish all colleagues purposeful and positive discourse which will provide you with new ideas and strategies to help improve the lives of those young people and children in your school communities.

RSAA Teaching Schools The RSA Academies’ Teaching Schools recruit and train new entrants to the teaching profession, identifies leadership potential, and provide support for schools across the West Midlands, to transform outcomes for young people and bring about positive social change. We drive action research, undertake innovations in teaching, and optimise the talents and commitment of our staff to develop creative ways of providing education.

Our Alliance is led by two designated National Teaching Schools (RSA Arrow Vale in Redditch & Holyhead School in Birmingham); additionally RSA Abbeywood First School is also a designated Teaching School in its own right. Our other RSA Academies include RSA Academy, Tipton; Ipsley CofE Middle RSA Academy, RSA Church Hill Middle School, St Stephen’s Primary, all of whom are in Redditch; Oldbury Park Primary in Worcester and RSA Sutton Park Primary in Kidderminster. Our work focuses on key partnerships, specifically with the RSA; with the RSA Central MAT; with Abbeywood Teaching School; with Birmingham City University and with first, primary, middle and secondary schools across the region.

What Do We Offer? We are proud to offer training and leadership in the following areas:

1. CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT The RSA Academies’ Teaching Schools are committed to improving student outcomes, and we believe that the best teachers make the most impact. Support for individual development and career choice is at the heart of our alliance. We facilitate intensive professional learning, ranging from trainee and newly qualified teacher induction programmes to subject enhancement and leadership development sessions.

2. SUPPORTING OTHER SCHOOLS The RSA Academies’ Teaching Schools are dedicated to ensuring that the School to School Support Programme provides schools with a significant and extensive level of expertise. Our track record demonstrates that the support we offer can transform a school around from an ‘Ofsted category’ to Outstanding.

4. IDENTIFYING AND DEVELOPING

LEADERSHIP POTENTIAL The RSA Academies’ Teaching Schools are excited about the power of great leadership and the impact a leader can have on the lives of others. We provide high quality training and leadership experiences for students and staff. All teachers are leaders within their classroom, and our talent management strategy ensures that teachers at all stages of their career have access to a range of leadership development programmes.

5. RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT The RSA Academies’ Teaching Schools were built with research and development at their core; We believe that effective research and enquiry begins with our students and a drive to improve their learning experience and educational outcomes. We further believe that research and development is important for all schools because the power to transform education comes when schools collaborate, and an active research and development culture can be found across all the schools in our Alliance.

6. SPECIALIST LEADERS OF EDUCATION Specialist leaders of education are outstanding middle and senior leaders. They have at least two years leadership experience in a particular specialism (e.g. maths, school business management, initial teacher training).

Abbeywood Teaching School

Abbeywood First School RSA Academy in Church Hill is a national teaching school. Teaching schools take

a leading role in recruiting and training new entrants to the profession. They identify and develop

leadership potential, provide support for other schools to bring about school improvement, and work

with schools across their teaching school alliance to raise standards of teaching.

Abbeywood is one of more than 40 schools in England who were granted teaching school status in the

latest recruitment round but is the only primary or first school in Redditch to have been awarded this

status. Introduced in 2011, teaching schools are excellent schools that work with partner schools in an

alliance to provide high quality school-led initial teacher training and professional development

opportunities for teachers at all stages of their career. They raise standards through supporting other

schools, especially those in challenging circumstances, and ensure that the most talented school leaders

are spotted and supported to become successful Headteachers.

Central Trust Primary Lead Di Smith said: “We are thrilled to have been granted Teaching School Status,

particularly as we are a small first school and all other teaching schools in the area secondary ones. “This

is a tremendous accolade for our amazing leadership team and all the excellent staff who have a wealth

of skills that they can share with others.” Lord Agnew, Under Secretary of State for the School System,

said: “I’d like to congratulate Abbeywood First School RSA Academy – they should be very proud of this

achievement. “Teaching schools are supporting other schools, attracting and training the best new

teachers and developing the next generation of leaders.”
