RRC Site Visit Series
Pearls in Peril Project
Tuesday June 13th 2017
Programme and Information
Before
Join us as we visit the Pearls in Peril Project at Braemar on the River Dee, in
Aberdeenshire. This project was a Finalist as the winner of the ’Partnership
& Multiple Benefit Project’ category in the 2017 UK River Prize.
Pearls in Peril (PiP) is a large and complex LIFE+ Nature project with 22 partners working
together throughout Great Britain to restore river habitats for freshwater pearl mussels
and their host salmonids. Scottish Natural Heritage and Dee District Salmon Fishery Board
will show us a few sites around Braemar including woodland creations sites and:
Car Bank
Multiple cars, tonnes of concrete waste,
rocks and boulders have been removed
from the bank of the River Dee.
Slugain Burn
Here embankments were removed and
relict channels reinstated to restore
connectivity with the adjacent floodplain
and help re-establish natural processes .
The visit is FREE to RRC members. If space is available, non-members are welcome to
attend at a cost of £30. Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. To book a
place please email us: [email protected], booking closes on 31st May or when all
spaces are allocated.
The visit will start at 10:30 and end by 15:30. This will include time to eat a packed lunch
(not supplied).
*The running of this site visit is dependent on sufficient numbers. The event will be confirmed on 31st May; we advise that you do not book non-refundable transport prior to then (or speak to us).
Also coming up in 2017: site visits to the River Prize winner and other two finalists in
