The Hospital Window

T wo men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room.

One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each af-

ternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to

the room’s only window. The other man had to spend all his time

flat on his back. The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of

their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement

in the military service, where they had been on vacation.

Every afternoon when the man in the bed by the window could sit

up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the

things he could see outside the window.

The man in the other bed began to live for those one hour periods.

The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans

Page 3: Rothersthorpe Newsletter May 2012

.played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young

lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color and a fine

view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance.

As the man by the window described all this in exquisite detail,

the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and

imagine the picturesque scene.

One warm afternoon the man by the window described a parade

passing by.

Although the other man couldn’t hear the band – he could see it.

In his mind’s eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it

with descriptive words.

Days and weeks passed.

One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths

only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had

died peacefully in his sleep. She was saddened and called the hos-

pital attendants to take the body away.

As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could

be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the

switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him

alone.

Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his

first look at the real world outside.

He strained to slowly turn to look out the window beside the bed.

It faced a blank wall. The man asked the nurse what could have

compelled his deceased roommate who had described such won-

derful things outside this window

The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even

see the wall.

She said, “Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you.”

Women’s Institute

"For the second time this year our speaker has failed to turn up, however,

this time we had a couple of days notice and we were able to book Jenny

from Bay Tree Cottage who came to demonstrate how to make chutney.

Afterwards we were invited to taste various chutneys, jams and

marmalades which we could purchase if we wished. A brilliant substitution.

There's no chance the speaker will not turn up at our next meeting as we

haven't invited anyone. It's the Resolution Meeting and this year we are

voting whether or not to urge the government to "Employ more Midwives".

The meeting will be rounded off with a Beetle Drive

(with prizes) and will take place on Monday 21st May

in the Village Hall at 7.30 pm. Come and join us you

will be most welcome, the cost which includes re-

freshments is £3.

We were joint second in our group for our Skittles

Competition, which was a big improvement on previ-

ous years. Bugbrooke W.I. came first and will go on

to the finals.

Last month we were involved in the W.I.s County

Symbolic Olympic Baton change. We received the

Baton from Upton W.I., their dog "Taz" brought the baton into the com-

mittee room where we had provided a buffet reception. The next evening

we delivered the Baton to Pattishall W.I. Christy Nolan organised her Mini

Car Club and there was about 8 or 9 mini cars which drove in convoy with

the baton. Pattishall provided a champagne and canape's reception for

our members. After the Baton has been passed to all W.I.s it will then be

delivered to Holdenby House on 21st June to celebrate the Queen's

Diamond Jubilee."

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH MAY 2012

We are pleased to be able to report that a quiet

month seems to have been had in our little village,

just a few sightings of suspicious vehicles which

were all reported to the police.

If you see anything that you feel is suspicious then please ring the

police on 101.

Also please remember it is the Open Day for the police next

month which is a wonderful day out for all the family and has FREE

entry.

Let's hope we all keep safe Christy Nolan or Margaret on 831020

Thruppsters

We will meet in the Committee Room on Monday 14th May at

2.30pm. Bring all your ideas as to how we can celebrate the

Diamond Jubilee. We can then discuss and make a firm decision.

3rd (£25) - Roy Turland

4th (£15) - Joyce King

5th (£10) - Joanna Keay Welcome to our new members and better luck next time.

Church Repairs

Another brief update.... Last year, just over £1000 was received towards much needed major repairs. A heartfelt thanks to everyone who has supported this project so far.

After last year's set of estimates, the highest priority was deemed to be 2 windows which are practically falling out. These will be removed in May, and restored, at a cost

(co-incidentally) of just over £1000.

We have just spent £600 on "holding repairs" to the roof, plus a more thor-

ough investigation of what needs doing. The eagle-eyed amongst you may have noticed 2 men on the roof a couple of weeks ago. We're awaiting some further estimates from them, but expect the next "high priority" expenditure to be on the downpipes which come down the bell tower onto the main roof. Apparently our two men on the roof couldn't quite work out how they are man-aging to stay in place (oo-er!!!) They also reported that the stonework up there is in a very bad way. Their holding repairs will give us security for at least 12 months, whilst we raise funds to tackle the worst areas more thoroughly.

A brief look at the Church Accounts for 2011

General fund:- Income £7105 - Outgoings £6536

Major Charitable giving:- £622

Fabric Fund:- Income £1030 - Outgoings £865 (general maintenance of the

building)

NEW Major repair fund:- Income £1088

Hope this keeps you up to date. If you'd like further information, or want to get

involved, contact Val on 832422

Village Information Sheet

It became obvious when the survey information was analysed that

many people thought a Village Information sheet would be useful. 85% of the returned forms favoured a “Welcome to the Village” leaflet. We have already received some useful information from a couple of people and would now like to find a group of interested villagers who can assist with this task.

If you would like to help please contact Jane or Steve on 830321 (leave

message if you get the answerphone with name and phone number), drop us an email (details on back of this newsletter), or drop a note of your name and number through the door of 35 Church Street. Thank you. Jane & Steve McCarthy

Force Open Day – a fun and free day for all the family.

The event will be held at Force Headquarters, Wootton Hall Park,

NN4 0JQ from 11am to 4pm on Saturday 12 May. Inspector Lyall said: “We’ll

be adding even more attractions to last year’s favourites so it’s certainly a date for people to put in their diaries. It’s a great chance to find out more about the many

different aspects and departments of police work, from the firearms and dogs section to

CID and the Force Control Room.”

“In addition to live demonstrations and scenarios, there will be stands and displays of-fering a wide variety of information and advice, fun activities for children, refreshments

and Safer Community Teams from across the county will

be there for people to meet their local officers and PCSOs.”

Demonstrations and scenarios will include:

Armed response vehicle and dogs demonstration

Petrol bombing demonstration

Off-road motorbike demonstration

• Taser demonstration

• Emergency response scenario

• Mock trial scenario

• Force Control Room demonstration

• Collision investigation team

There will also be fun activities for children, refresh-ments, historic police cars, the police museum, stands

for Safer Community Teams from across the county,

crime prevention, the Special Constabulary, the police

cadets, the Arson Task Force, Wildlife and Countryside officers, Victim Support, internet security and safety for

children, operations such as Operation Guardian and

many more.

Last year’s Open Day proved hugely popular drawing large crowds who enjoyed the demonstrations and

stands. Members of the public posted scores of com-

ments on the Force’s facebook page after the event in-cluding: “Thanks for the opportunity to look over your shoulder and find out what's

actually involved in police work,” “A fantastic day! Impressive, inspirational people;

well organised; very child-focused,” and “… good free family day out with lots for the kids to do.”

News from Rothersthorpe School:

A s we mentioned last month Class 2

celebrated a ‘mock’ wedding at Astcote

Methodist chapel, enjoying their wedding lunch

afterwards and toasting the Bride and Groom

with a glass of champagne- (well, lemonade!)

After the service, the children spent time on the

refurbished facilities at Pattishall playground.

We would like to thank John Atkin for giving up

his time to conduct the ceremony and show the

children around the Chapel, to compare different

places of worship.

Our ‘fluffy’ visitors have just arrived in their incuba-

tor and we are all eagerly awaiting the first delivery

as I write this. We will put some photos on the web-

site once the chicks have all hatched!

Class 3 and Class 4 children are enjoying cricket coaching sessions

this term from a local cricket coach as part of the ECB’s ‘Chance

to Shine’ initiative.

Our first Spring half term culminates

on 1st June with our annual May Day

celebrations, which this year will have

a ‘Jubilee theme’. Villagers are invited

to our dress rehearsal on 31st May. In-

vitations will be sent out nearer the

time.

Village Survey Results At long last we’ve entered all the data into a spread-sheet and have produced a document that shows the results in a simple format. See below for an ex-ample.

I shall be publishing the data onto the

web site at the beginning of the month

but to avoid waste I will only be provid-

ing a printed version on request. Please

don’t be afraid to ask for a printed ver-

sion, after all the effort that has gone

into collecting the information I would

like as many people as possible to think

about the results.

I will be holding a public meeting in the village hall on Monday 28 th May starting at 7.30 to discuss the results and gather opinions on what ac-tions should go into the village plan. Please make every effort to attend as this could shape the future of our village. Steve McCarthy (Parish Councillor)

Table Tennis update Clive Appleton B.E.M. put Rothersthorpe on the map by winning the 3rd Division Championship at Bugbrooke on Monday 23rd April for the second time having won in 2011 too. The Rothersthorpe Table Tennis Team managed to finish second in the Towcester and District League 3rd division which means they may well be moving up a division next year. Well done, Clive Appleton, Mike Barber, Dave Kettell , Nish Dave and Bruce Khashaey.

Roade Community Orchestra

Meet on Tuesday evenings between 6.30 p.m. to 8.15 p.m. during

term at Roade Primary School.

boast that we have a wide selection of instruments. Our repertoire

film/show tunes and traditional music etc. We cater for the enthu-

siastic beginner to the more proficient and advanced musician.

We can offer a well lit and acoustic hall, easy parking and re-

freshments during a break which enables the members to get to

know each other and have a chat.

dug an old instrument out of the loft and want to play music with

other like-minded people.

No audition is required so if you are interested and play an or-

chestral musical instrument including drumkit or percussion,

please do not hesitate to come along to either play or listen when

you will be given a warm welcome.

Rothersthorpe Village Hall. Annual General Meeting

Tuesday 8th May 2012 at 7.30pm

The Village Hall will have been opened for 30 years in November this year.

“Rothersthorpe Village Hall was officially opened on Thursday, 18th

November 1982 at 7.30 pm by Mrs J Tice of the Bernard Sunley Charita-

ble Foundation. The opening was very well attended by officers and

members of the County, District, Borough and Parish Councils as well as

many village people. After the ceremony refreshments were served.” So

records the Parish Council Minutes of November 1982.

Rothersthorpe Village Hall replaced the old Memorial Hall which had stood

on the site of the Memorial Garden in Church Street opposite The Lane

since 1925. Rothersthorpe Primary School, which shares the site with the

Village Hall, replaced the adjacent building now Rothersthorpe Nursery

School.

The Village Hall is approximately half of the single space hall at the end

nearest the Committee Room. The School hall is the remainder of the

Hall. The village premises comprise the Village Hall, Committee Room,

Access Corridor, and Toilets, Store and Cleaner’s Room plus the front Car

Park but not the playing field at the back of the building. The Kitchen is a

shared facility.

The Village Hall, which is a registered charity, has a 60 year lease on the

building with nil annual rent. A cross charging arrangement is in place with

the School to apportion the charges for heating, lighting, cleaning, main-

tenance, etc, all in accordance with agreed proportions set down in the

lease agreement with the County Council who own the whole building and

the land on which it stands. The

every day running of the hall is

carried out by the Village Hall

Management Committee, often

referred to as the VHMC, who

are the Management Trustees

and administer the hall on

behalf of the Parish Council who

are the Custodian Trustees.

Page 21: Rothersthorpe Newsletter May 2012

The VHMC are led by Mr Dickens as Chairman and are made up, in the ma-

jority, by representatives of village hall user groups. Mr Dickens is the

only person to have remained from the old Memorial Hall Committee. The

current Committee consists of Judith Wood, Philip Dickens, Jane

McCarthy, Richard Smart, Jenny Dellar, Peter Doran, Jane Whitehouse,

Clive Appleton, Kate Kutas, Jane Battams, Jenny Sturt, and Mike Barber.

Hire charges for the Hall, or individual areas within it, are based on com-

mercial rates set and agreed regularly by the VHMC. Village residents

are currently entitled to a 50% discount for bona fide village activities

and all bookings must be made through Mrs Jenny Dellar the Booking

Clerk and Site Supervisor.

Any of the Committee would be pleased to speak with you regarding Vil-

lage Hall matters but you may like to come along and take part in the next

meeting which will be the Annual General Meeting. This will take place on

Tuesday 8th May 2012 at 7.30 pm in the Committee Room of the Village

Hall. You will be made very welcome and the proceedings will only take

about an hour. Why not come along and express your views and opinions on

matters concerning Rothersthorpe Village Hall.
