‘LENT LUNCHES’ TO ENJOY

AROUND THE VILLAGE ON WEDNESDAYS THROUGH

FEBRUARY AND MARCH. ALL WELCOME. 12.30PM - 2PM.

BRING A FRIEND, EAT, CHAT AND THEN MAKE A

DONATION AS YOU LIKE.

YOUR MONEY WILL GO STRAIGHT OUT TO AN ORPHANAGE IN IGANGA (UGANDA)

At this time of year, on a Wednesday, ‘lent lunches’ are hosted in

different houses around the village. They are very informal, simple lunches, of soup, fresh bread and then cheese – we sometimes get home-made cakes as well but that depends on whose house we are in!

This year the church have agreed to donate everything we raise over Lent to an orphanage (Margaret’s Children) in Iganga. Feeding 25 children, every day is a challenge, so every penny helps.

Please drop in to as many as you can make.

No need to ‘book’!

This Last New Year

While writing my December offering for the Bugbrooke Link at the

beginning of November, I projected forward towards Christmas and

‘Preparations’. As I write these few words at the start of January

2013 for you to read in February I’m projecting back towards the

start of the year! If you are not confused by this opening paragraph,

you should be!

This said, by the time you read this, the year will be one twelfth

over and New Year Resolutions will either be a dim and distant ges-

ture or something you are still seriously trying to keep.

One of my earliest resolutions for the New Year goes way back to

school days (more years than I’m willing to admit), I announced to

the class and my then teacher, ‘I’d resolved to give up chewing gum’.

To my surprise and immediate delight and suppressing the urge to

snigger and smile, the teacher called me out to the front of the class.

However, the suppressed smile was wiped from my face as she

addressed the class bitterly, - 'this boy never chews gum anyway.'

She then turned to me, looking straight into my now blushing face,

and with a hint of frustration and even anger in her voice she said to

me 'Do you?', 'No, miss,' I said, this time with the urge to snigger

and smile gone.

The teacher then very sternly but honestly gave us all a talk about

promises - particularly those of little or no value. At the start of

2013 (still eleven more months to run), it is important to look into our

future very seriously. The world, with its ever increasing different

ideologies, inherent fear, with its high technologies and micro¬chips

We have to move with it. So it isn't enough to promise ourselves

that, since we don't like these new changes, we have decided to give

them up. That's just as bad as promising to give up one of our

Page 5: Rothersthorpe Newsletter February 2013

Thruppsters

We will meet at 47 Banbury Lane (Lindsays) for soup and pudding at

12.30am on Monday 4th February. The subs will be collected at this

meeting. Peter Doran

bad habits and then failing - or forgetting - to do so.

Our Lord Jesus tells of two brothers. One was asked by his

father to work in the vineyard — but he wouldn't. Later, he

changed his mind and went. The other said he would work in the

vineyard - but he broke his promise - he did not go to work.

(Matthew Chapter 21 v 28) Jesus asked 'Which of them did the

will of the Father?' His audience had no trouble with the answer.

The first!' They were right.

In 2013, change your mind. Make a true promise. Go with Jesus.

Don't blush or snigger. For Jesus makes this promise - to keep you

into eternity — with him.

Church Raffle

Thank you to all who supported the Church Raffle at Christmas.

We do appreciate your support and generosity.

John Boyson will be collecting all the

Children’s Society boxes during February.

If you would prefer to deliver yours to John

he lives at 24 Banbury Lane Rothersthorpe.

Should you wish to have a box to collect funds for this charity

during 2013 then contact John on 832762.

Women’s Institute

It was so disappointing to have to cancel our last

meeting, the first time, at least in my memory due to

the beautiful but hazardous weather.

So, for our February meeting we have Garfield coming

to demonstrate "Exercise with a Swing". What is all

that about?, well to be honest, I've no idea but I shall

wait to be surprised as it sounds like fun. The date is

Monday 18th February, in the Village Hall, time

7.30pm. Please come if you can, the cost to guests is

£3 which includes our W.I. Sooper Dooper

refreshments.

Our Skittles Practice nights are not going well due to the weather

as we haven't been able to get over to Harpole. We are not

panicking...much but we have our first Match on 31st

January. We'll perhaps need to more than cross our fingers!!!!

Rothersthorpe Village Playing Field

Comments made by the residents of Church Street on the

proposed playing field adjacent to Banbury Lane, have been taken

into consideration.

The project team are in the process of contacting the County

Council Highways Department and the electricity transmission

company to obtain further information.

Without the consent of the Highways Department to construct an

entrance to the field and the agreement from the electricity

company to move the power cables then the project is unlikely to

continue in its present form.

Rothersthorpe 100 Club

I'm pleased to announce that the winners of the December 100

Club draw were as follows:

1st £100 Chris King

2nd £50 William Boulding

3rd £25 Joyce Keay

4th £15 Caroline Doherty

5th £10 Janet Eliot

Do please let me know if you want to join. This year, we gave

away £800 in prize money, and retained £777 towards the

Church fabric fund. As there have been very few "routine main-

tenance" expenses this year, over £700 of this will go straight

into the major repair fund for the roof / stonework / windows.

We are still waiting for the estimate for Major Repair Fund

Stonework.

Thank you very much for your support. Val Bridges

Parish Council Meeting

The next Parish Council meeting will be

held on Monday 4th March at 7.30pm

in the Committee Room at the Village Hall.

As always, anyone is welcome to attend and

address the Parish Council in the public

open session at the beginning of the meeting.

Please come along and participate in your local community

decision making process.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

Happy New Year to everyone, again we seem to have had

quite a quiet time in our area,

Although due to the weather, there seems to have been

quite a few cars going off the road, but

I have not had any reports of anyone from the village

being hurt.

I have been quite alarmed at the number of cars I have seen running outside

homes whilst they are being defrosted, please remember that this is how a car

was stolen from the village last year.

Also could I please ask people with outside lights on their houses to use

them, it is a proven fact that an outside light switched on will deter burglars.

We have been offered the chance to buy three kinds of alarms that

Neighbourhood Watch have had manufactured, these are a Multi Function

Alarm for property protection, and for personal

protection a Minder Personal Alarm and also a smaller Defender Minimax.

Please see all the details on the following two pages.

These can be ordered by ringing myself or Margaret on 831020, I have a

small number of the small personal alarms, but will go and collect any alarms

that are ordered.

Please stay safe Christy and Margaret

Ask not what your village can do for you...

A couple of months ago we announced that we would be moving

from the village later this year. The village is fortunate that Phil

Crowe has volunteered to take on the role of newsletter editor

but we need to find someone to manage the website.

Over the past two years the site has grown and there are now a

number of people who regularly add comments, reviews and infor-

mation so it would be a shame to lose it altogether. If you would

like to discuss what is required them please contact me .

Crime and policing update for farm and rural contacts

A vehicle and trailer, which have since been found, were stolen

from Thrapston Road in Finedon overnight on Monday 14 Janu-ary.

Red diesel stolen from a JCB robot machine in a field in Great Addington overnight on Monday 14 January. News for Horse Owners

We are aware of the concerns of some horse owners in East Northamptonshire about ponies being deliberately let out of

fields.

We have had a report of criminal damage to a fence post in the Brigstock area in recent weeks and we are aware of three inci-

dents where horses have been found out of their fields, how-ever, there is no evidence to show that someone has let them out deliberately.

Two of the incidents relate to the report of a horse out of it's

field, which was subsequently struck by a car and died. The third incident involved a number of horses that had got lose and were found a mile from where they were kept. There is no evi-

dence to suggest any of these horses were released on pur-pose.

Horse owners need to remain vigilant and be aware of any sus-

picious activity where their horses are kept and if they witness anything suspicious, report it to us as soon as possible.

They also need to make sure they have secure fencing and as many security measures in place as possible to help stop horses

escaping and to help prevent any criminal offences being com-mitted.

Anyone who would like to report any suspicious activity can do so on 101, or if a crime is taking place, on 999.

News from Rothersthorpe School:

December was a busy month as always in school and we were delighted

that so many parents, grandparents and village residents were able to join

us for our Christmas production ‘Stable Manners’ Following two perform-

ances of the show and our Christmas lunch and party, the Autumn term

ended on the usual high note with our Christingle and Nativity service in

church. Thank you to all the parents and villagers who joined us and also

contributed to our retiring collection in aid of the Children’s Wards at

Northampton General Hospital. We were pleased to send them a cheque

for £136. After the service, parents joined us in the hall where members

of the church served teas and drew the Church Christmas raffle.

After the excitement of Christmas, the children returned to school at

the beginning of January and enjoyed our annual school disco at the end

of the first week. We were also pleased to welcome back M&M Produc-

tions, the touring theatre company, who delighted us all with this year’s

panto, Cinderella. On the same day, Class 3 welcomed their friends from

Spring Lane school in Northampton, who really enjoyed joining us for the

day.

Some of our after school clubs are put on hold at this time of year, due

to the dark nights and bad weather, but many children are still taking part

in our indoor clubs - Hotshots Basketball, Food Technology and Class Two

Art and Crafts.

The snow has caused great excitement in school and the children have

enjoyed making snow sculptures out on the field at playtimes.

Our children are once again taking part in a record breaking event in

February organised by Sign Health, a healthcare charity for deaf people.

At exactly 2.45pm on Wednesday 6th February, thousands of children

from over 950 schools across the country will all be singing and signing

the same song at the same time!

School closes for the half term break on Friday 8th February and the

children return on Monday 18th February.

Community Payback requires offenders sentenced to unpaid work to repay the com-munity for their crimes. It seeks to utilise the existing skills of those undertaking the unpaid work and offers opportunities to develop new skills. The scheme is available to a wide variety of charitable and vol-untary organisations and local councils. A community can have a say in what type of work is carried out in their area by nomi-nating a Community Payback scheme on the Northants Probation Trust website: http://www.northants-probation.org.uk/community-payback4.html.
