Welcome to Roots and Wings Christian Preschool! Dear Parents and Guardians, I am delighted that your child will be joining us this year to explore the rich wonders that God provides each day for our preschoolers! Our students develop a foundation of skills as they learn about the God’s Love throughout each activity. What could be a more amazing way to begin school? Your child will learn many new concepts in the coming months. But more valuable are the lasting positive experiences acquired through Bible stories, literacy exploration, experimentation, productive creative arts, and outdoor play. We hope you will also feel a sense of joy as your child grows with us. This handbook was created to help answer questions about our policies and procedures. If you have questions, feel free to contact me, Lynnette Seidemann, at (775) 440-1243. Mission Statement The mission of Roots and Wings Christian Preschool is to provide a loving and secure Christian atmosphere where discovery-based learning and hands-on approach to education happens. Where children can develop socially, emotionally, and physically acquiring and mastering skills in a Bible-based program run by dedicated, professional personnel. Creating an environment where children are self- motivated focusing deeply on purposeful activities giving children roots that run deep and wings to fly.

Educational Philosophy A parent is the child’s first teacher. At Roots and Wings Christian Preschool we will work together with you to give each of your children a strong foundation in an atmosphere of Christian beliefs. We will give each child an environment of exploration, learning, and creativity every day. Children learn from doing. A classroom without walls is the best environment for a child to learn. At Roots and Wings we thrive in providing both an indoor and an outdoor learning environment. It is a natural learning environment with the basis of outdoor education in exploring God’s canvas, which He created for us. Providing an atmosphere that promotes children’s natural curiosity will enrich their love of learning building a bridge between family and education while having a firm foundation of God’s love for them. Striving to both bring the outdoors in and the indoors out. Giving children the opportunity to learn and grow in a natural environment free from all the stresses of life. Bringing freedom to their imagination while exploring their interests in learning about God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit. Roots and Wings is merely a facilitator in helping to mold a child’s natural desire to learn. It is our job to provide opportunities that develop while we keep introducing new concepts that will advance each child through development.

Hours of Service Roots and Wings Christian Preschool is open from 7:00 AM – 6:00PM Monday-Friday for children ages 6wks old to 6 years old. Full-time enrollment is available as well as classes on Monday, Wednesday, Friday or Tuesday and Thursday.

In case of inclement weather, we have the following policy to ensure that our families and staff will stay safe in the event of a major winter storm or emergency. If the weather has deteriorated to the point that it is not safe to travel on the roads, Roots and Wings Christian Preschool will close. Roots and Wings Christian Preschool WILL NOT follow Washoe County School District for DELAYED Starts. We will do our best to keep the school open each day as we are able in a timely manner. We are going to evaluate each day as they come and we will still have some delay openings as we wait for roads to be safe to travel but our goal is to eliminate complete closures (unless the weather is horrible and roads are hazardous). Register you cell phone with the Remind App to get up to date information from RWCP on inclement weather days.

Child-Centered Learning

Our educational philosophy paints a picture of how Roots and Wings Christian Preschool operates in a child centered manner. Educators guide students to new learning as children ask questions, express curiosity or concern, and show enthusiasm towards their discoveries. Students experiment, problem-solve, and explore with their senses. Students develop friendships and learn from one another through cooperative play. In other words, students actively participate in all aspects of learning! In contrast to traditional preschool programs, at Roots and Wings Christian Preschool: Children will have a daily foundation in biblical teaching, through Bible stories, memory verses, biblical story activities that enhance what they are learning each day. Children learn directly from hands on experiences both indoors and outdoors. Children will be gardening and will develop earth-friendly habits such as recycling, composting, and learning to take care of what God has given us to care for. Children create and reflect on learning through a variety of expressive art forms. Math and Science concepts are attained by: Finding, following, and repeating patterns Counting within context Figuring out what is missing among groups Estimating more or less Songs, stories, and games with counting Using big number words and time words Graphing and charting Using group names (i.e. dozen, pair, many) Shape recognition Classifying and grouping objects Sorting and matching objects Measuring and using of scales Tracking seasonal and time progressions Counting with one-to-one correspondence We develop language and literacy skills by: Exposing students to letters, letter combinations, and words Modeling writing and offering writing opportunities each day Learning from a variety of print materials (i.e. magazines, books, charts and poems) Providing a print-rich classroom environment Storytelling, listening to and retelling stories Inviting students to dictate or imagine stories Encouraging dramatic play Singing, rhyming, and experimenting with sounds Generating lists or reading to perform a task (i.e. recipe or game instructions) Identifying characters and storylines to promote comprehension Introducing new words, words from other languages and signs We reference the Nevada State Curriculum preschool standards building a foundation for School Readiness and Success from the beginning.

Waiting List

Roots and Wings Christian Preschool has an ongoing waiting list. In order to be put on the waiting list a parent must tour the school with an administrator. Interested parents must receive the school’s literature and talk about the programs offered. To be placed on the list, a non-refundable waiting list fee is assessed. This fee of $100.00, is non-refundable which will be applied to your child’s registration fee. This nominal fee eliminates an overburdened list and creates a more realistic view of those families who are interested in Roots and Wings Christian Preschool. We utilize the waiting list throughout the year to fill any vacancies. The date you place your name on the list, the age of the child, and program availability determines how spots will be filled. THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW Sign In – Be sure to sign your child/children in and out. FOR THE SAFETY OF THE CHILDREN, all children must be picked up and dropped off each day, in person, by a parent or other authorized ADULT. Children may not walk themselves into the Center. Sign-in sheets will be posted. Parents are asked to sign children in and out each day by recording their initials and time of arrival and departure. These records are required by the State of Nevada and give The Center a record should there ever be a question about attendance or who picked up a child. These records also insure an accurate count for fire drills or in the event of a fire or other emergency.

• The people listed on the registration form may only pick up your child. If it becomes necessary for someone not listed on the registration form to pick up your child, WRITTEN PERMISSION SIGNED BY THE PARENT(S) WILL BE THE ONLY WAY YOUR CHILD WILL BE RELEASED FROM THE CENTER. NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE.

• In the event of an emergency, Roots and Wings Christian Preschool is not financially responsible for any emergency vehicle transportation costs or for any medical care or cost incurred as a result of the Center initiating the care.

• In the event of an emergency, procedure and plan for evacuation and meeting places are as follows:

1) If there is a problem with in the church/school grounds, we will walk to Walmart’s parking lot. 2) If the church/school neighborhood or our community is evacuated by law enforcement we have to go where they send us. This information is available through the media or the law enforcement ordering our evacuation. We will have your emergency information with us and will make every effort to get all the information directly to you to meet up with your child.

• In the event of a serious accident or illness, the staff will take prompt action on behalf of the child first and then notify the parents as quickly as possible. Parents are required to submit a Waiver, Release, and Indemnity Agreement for transporting your child(ren) and a Child Health and Emergency Information Card at time of enrollment and to update this information regularly.

Breakfast, Lunch and Snacks Roots and Wings Christian Preschool is proud to be a part of FOOD FOR KIDS PROGRAM. This program allows us to offer more organic and nutritious meals and snacks each day. There is a form that families need to fill our before enrollment to aid in RWCP being a part of the program. We will provide nutritious meals and snacks for all children. Children under 2yrs old will be served whole milk with breakfast and lunch. Babies under 1yr old will be served either breastmilk or formula per the child’s needs and family wishes. RWCP provides Kirkland Brand Sensitive Formula. Children over 2yrs old will be served 1% milk with breakfast and lunch. We do our best to accommodate for their needs and likes when we do our shopping. We ask that all children try a “no-thank you” bite before deciding not to eat something on their plate. While we encourage all children to eat their food, we do not force them to do so. Children will not starve themselves and will eat when they are ready. They constantly go through growth spurts. Should we notice that a child is continuously declining meals, we will be in contact with the parent(s) to discuss the matter.

Arrival and Departure ARRIVAL When your child arrives, please walk him/her to the classroom. Children will place belongings in their special cubby. Each child uses the same cubby all year, so they quickly take ownership of the space and ready themselves for class. Parents/guardians must initial the class roster to sign in. An opening activity or imagination station will be waiting. This self-directed learning time provides an opportunity for children to socialize with teachers and peers. These activities rotate and correspond to our weekly theme. Help your child engage in an activity upon arrival. Please take a few moments to say good-bye to your child. Remember, class time is a special time only for students and teachers! DEPARTURE Parents/guardians may gather outside the classroom until staff initiates sign out for the day. Class typically concludes with an art project and final circle time or good-bye song. Sometimes little hands may need extra washing before going home! Stay in the loop by reading the Friday email update. If your child must go home with someone other than his or her regular guardian, please fill out a permission slip in the classroom stating the person’s name, contact information and your authorization. For your child’s safety, we may ask to see a Driver’s License to confirm that individual’s identity.

Clothing ALL CLOTHING MUST BE LABELED! Outdoor discovery requires freedom of movement in non-restrictive clothing. Tight clothing, fancy dresses and costumes can get in the way during active play. For independence in toileting children need clothing that is easy to take on and off. We encourage children to wear hats during outdoor play. We provide smocks for art projects however we will not force any child to wear a smock. Please dress your child in clothing that can be soiled so they will feel free to participate in messy projects and trail hikes. You should expect your child (and his/her clothing) to get dirty out- doors! If at any time your child's clothing becomes wet and uncomfortable, we will assist him/ her in changing into their extra set of clothes. When we head outdoors, we will help your child change into boots (if necessary). Please provide appropriate shoes for any weather to ensure your child can freely explore. Children need comfortable, protective shoes with gripping soles for running, jumping and climbing. Sneakers or and closed-toed shoes are best. When we return from wet or muddy play, we will take our shoes off and leave them on the back deck. Please make sure your child has a spare pair of socks or slippers in case of wet feet! CHANGE OF CLOTHES Please provide an extra labeled set of clothing to leave in the classroom. Extra sets of clothing should include: shirt, pants, underwear, and socks. Be sure to exchange this clothing as your child grows into new sizes, and when the seasons change. FALL Rubber boots Rain jacket Light gloves Hat Spare change of clothes

Adjustment to Preschool Starting preschool is a big step for most kids. Some children are excited to participate and they easily acclimate to class. Other children are nervous at first but quickly ‘warm up’ as they get en- gaged in activities. Still others may have a longer adjustment period as they gradually become comfortable with a new environment and expectations. Occasionally a child who is eager at first may have difficulty later when they realize the change is permanent. This adjustment is not necessarily related to a child’s maturity level; every child handles new situations in his or her own way. We acknowledge these differences and provide support and encouragement to help each child adjust to our program. As a parent/guardian, you have unique insight as to how your child reacts to new settings. There are many ways to prepare your child for class, such as talking about it one week before school starts. “Next week you’ll be going to Roots and Wings Christian Preschool! Won’t that be fun?!” As your child asks questions, answer them honestly. “You’re going to explore outside, sing songs, watch puppet shows, make art projects and learn lots of new things — you will have lots of fun!” NOTE: If you start talking up preschool too early, this may cause anxiety. You may want to make a visit to RWCP with your child to get familiar with the classrooms. This may alleviate some trepidation about unfamiliar settings. You may also want to use our “potty” a few times prior to the start of the school year. When you drop your child off, assure him or her that you will be excited to hear all about the day when it is time to be picked up. You might even give your child a challenge: “While you are in class today, pick your favorite thing to tell me about — I can’t wait to hear about your day!” If your child is experiencing a very difficult transition, please share your concerns with the teacher so that she can help provide a happy, smooth transition. OUTDOOR PLAY Research has shown that children stay healthier and more alert for learning when they have regular outdoor play. Outdoor play will be included daily in our program, weather permitting. Please send proper clothing for outdoor play. The staff will monitor weather conditions and the children will go to the “big room” for gross motor activities if they cannot go outside. Children should arrive at school in closed-toed shoes that enable them to move and play freely. Please do not send children to school in flip-flops, Crocs, or dress shoes. When snow is on the ground, children must arrive with snow pants, boots, hats, and mittens so that they are safely able to play in the snow. Children will be permitted to play outdoors for small periods of time when temperatures, including wind-chill temperatures, are above 35 degrees.

If a staff member is outside alone with a group of children he/she is able to summon help without leaving the group. All teachers and administrators have cell phones and walkie talkies and are able to communicate with one another from anywhere in or around the preschool.

ITEMS FROM HOME Security objects from home are allowed, but help your child understand the risks of loss and damage. These objects will be stored in a cubby during instruction and activities. NOTE: Toys that encourage aggressive play, including weapons of any kind, are not permitted.

Special Occasions HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS Holidays are exciting for our little ones! At Roots and Wings Christian Preschool, we downplay the commercial aspects of holidays and focus on seasonal and Biblical aspects of celebrations. Please do not wear costumes to school, especially masks, as many children find them frightening. We acknowledge holidays and cultural events through wholesome activities such as songs, stories and food tasting. BIRTHDAYS In honor of your child’s birthday, we encourage you to donate a book to Roots and Wings Christian Preschool library. This book may be a new or used book donated anytime during the school year. We will place a bookplate inside the cover with your child’s name and his/her date of birth. Each time we read your child’s birthday book, we will fondly remember your child. Thank you for helping our library grow! NOTE: Since we promote healthy eating habits and try to alleviate potential allergy complications, we do not celebrate birthdays with food.

Our Approach to Discipline The physical and emotional well-being of every child is of utmost importance. Every child will be made to feel safe and protected while in our care. We cultivate a calm, empathetic atmosphere with clear expectations for all participants. To maintain this atmosphere, a balance of structured learning and self-directed play means that children are engaged in positive activities. Adults are always available to help children solve social problems, such as sharing or including peers in group play. Whenever a child is having a hard time controlling his or her behavior, adults will assist in a calm, helpful manner. We practice conflict resolution that encourages children to identify and express what they are feeling to become more emotionally literate and empathetic. We help children understand the connection between their behavior and consequences. Positive reinforcement plays a big part of our discipline and behavior management. Other methods of discipline include setting clear rules, redirection, reminders of expectations, and encouragement. Techniques that are NOT used include physical punishments, withholding of snacks, bribery, threats, or any other methods that may frighten or humiliate children. Parents may NOT use any form of spanking while on the Preschool property, please talk to the director about any concerns you have or if you need some alternative discipline ideas. Parents/guardians will be notified by the Lead Teacher if their child is not responding to disciplinary efforts. We will work with parents/guardians to develop and implement strategies so that every child is successful during class. BITING POLICY Biting another child should never occur, but sometimes children get frustrated and will bite other children. We want to be supportive of parent(s)/guardian(s) as they teach their children not to bite, but at the same time we need to protect other children in our care. Consequently, we have the

Page 19: Roots and Wings Christian Preschool

19

following policy regarding biting: A bite that leaves red marks, bruising or broken skin will be reported to both children’s parent(s)/guardian(s) and an Incident Report will be written. Roots and Wings Christian Preschool will suggest that a parent seek medical attention for a child if the bite they receive breaks the skin. If a child bites twice in 2 weeks (14 calendar days) a conference with the parent(s) and site director will be set up as soon as possible (within 24 hours of the second bite). The child may stay in child care only at the recommendation of the teachers and the director. The director will review all recent incident reports involving the child, to look for patterns or other information that might be useful. At the parent conference an intervention plan will be developed. The age of the child, the child’s background, the classroom setting, and other extenuating circumstances will be considered. If the child does not stop biting, the child may be asked to take a break from the center. The length of the break will be determined by the director. Tuition may be adjusted for long breaks from the center with the director’s approval. Readmission to the center will be at the director’s discretion.

Family Involvement We encourage you to play an active role in our program! Your preschooler counts on you for support and encouragement outside of their new world of learning. Please review Roots and Wings Christian Preschool calendar and listing of our events. Each event highlights topics your child is learning about in an interactive way. We hope these events will allow you to socialize with other families, too! Parent conferences are a great way to stay informed about your child’s progress. We perform on-going assessments of physical, social, emotional and cognitive development. We would love to share our thoughts with you!

Emergencies All staff members are trained in First Aid and CPR. In the event of an accident that requires medical attention, we will do one of the following:

• Call parents/guardians and emergency contacts to collect the child immediately to seek medical attention; or

• If severe and immediate help is deemed necessary, we will call 9-1-1 and a staff member will accompany the child to the emergency room until parents/guardians arrive.

SAFETY DRILLS We conduct regular safety drills to help prepare students in case of an emergency. Every effort will be made to keep these activities straightforward. We do not want to frighten the children, but we do want them to feel prepared and calm in case of an emergency.

Reporting Child Abuse Nevada State Law (NRS 432B and NAC 432A-410) requires professionals in the medical, education, child care, law enforcement, religious, legal and social services fields to report any suspected child abuse or neglect to Child Protective Services, local law enforcement and to the Bureau of Child Care Services. Roots and Wings Christian Preschool fully complies with this requirement.

Illness Any child who is suspected of having a communicable disease or who develops one or any combination of the symptoms listed below shall be placed in isolation and the parent will be called. Due to staffing requirements parents must pick up the child as quickly as possible and the child will be required to be out of the center for 48 hours. TEMPERATURE AT SCHOOL

• A child with a temperature of 100 or above will be sent home and may not return to school until the temperature is normal for 24 hours without Tylenol or other fever reducing medication.

• Roots and Wings Christian Preschool does not give Aspirin or Tylenol for an elevated temperature unless ordered by a doctor.

• If a temperature of 103.8 or above and a parent cannot be reached the school will call 911 for medical attention for your child. A temperature of this degree can cause seizures in some children and medical attention is essential. We don’t give aspirin for any reason unless ordered by a doctor.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF COMMUNICABLE DISEASES • Severe coughing • Difficult or rapid breathing • Stiff neck • Diarrhea • Temperature of 100 or higher • Conjunctivitis (pink eye) • Vomiting • Head lice or nits • Continual runny nose (If the runny nose is allergy related we need a note from

Page 22: Roots and Wings Christian Preschool

22

the Doctor stating that it is not contagious.) WEEKLY UPDATES OUR MAIN CONCERN IS THE WELL BEING OF ALL THE CHILDREN: Please, do not mask any of the above symptoms with medication prior to bringing your child to school. If your child is unable to participate in the normal daily activities of the class (inside or outside) we ask that you not send your child to school that day. MEDICATION Prescribed medication will be administered to your child as directed by your child’s Doctor, the following shall apply:

• The prescribed medication must be brought in by the custodial parent. • The prescribed medication must be in its original bottle, with the date, name of • child, name of the medication, medication directions listed clearly on the label. • If the child requires a liquid medication, the parent must bring a graduated medication spoon or cup. • If pills must be cut in half, it is the responsibility of the parent and not that of • Roots and Wings Christian Preschool personnel. If pills are not cut in half or quarter as • prescribed, the medication cannot be given. • The first dose of medicine must be given at home or by the custodial parent. • All medical procedures i.e. Nebulizer treatments. Glucose monitoring, or Epipen, • etc. MUST HAVE a medical procedure form completed by your child’s doctor, written parental

consent and staff training before the procedure can be preformed. • Any lotions such as sunscreen, insect repellant, allergy creams, must have a medication form filled out

prior to our staff applying the lotion to your child. This also includes bottom creams like Destin. • Do not send any kind of medicine including cough drops or vitamins in your child’s backpack, or pocket

as this presents a safety issue
