Leave to Serve: Opportunities for Teds

Roosevelt TODAY

By Christol Schultz, Public Relations Coordinator “Enter to Learn—Leave to Serve.” is the motto Roosevelt embraced a few years back.  It is expected that every student will complete 80 hours of community service before they graduate.

Opportunities are provided in the school, such as working on Operation Holiday Basket, where we feed 400 families each year, making sandwiches or road side bags for the homeless, or helping in the building. But a vast majority of our students go out into their community and help at libraries, parks and hospitals, or clean up the community and lakes, to name a few.

Service trips have become a new thing, both as day trips and, more recently, a group of students, with counselor Mark Heymans and career readiness coordinator Amanda Justen, gave up their spring break to build two houses in Peru that they raised the money to build.

Two new awards recognize this. Lyle James, honoring his parents, established the Avery and Blanche James Award for Service, to be awarded to a student epitomizing the “Enter to Learn—Leave to Serve” philosophy. Also, the Foundation is awarding annually to a second student a $1,000 Foundation Scholarship, recognizing outstanding service.

Two seniors from the class of 2019 have been recognized for their outstanding efforts.  Winner of the Avery and Blanche James Award for Service is Ella Spurbeck, who took the initiative to start the Green Team at Roosevelt.  The Green Team is a group of students who do the recycling once a week.  Ella had almost 200 hours of community service doing various things in her community.

Kathleen Grube (L) is studying and serving in India, and (R) Ella Spurbeck is attending Lewis and Clark College in Oregon.

The winner of the Foundation Service Scholarship, valedictorian Kathleen Grube, had almost 500 hours.  Kathleen gives back directly in her community, but has also done a few mission trips, including the Peru trip. She currently is studying and doing service in India.

Although these two students are exceptional, they aren’t the exception.  Our students are building community both inside and outside the walls of Roosevelt, and it’s a beautiful thing.

Your money: 47 earn scholarships worth over $74,000!

2019 is a banner year for scholarships, with over $74,000 awarded by the Foundation to 47 grads of the 75 applying. All thanks to you. In 1998 only two students received $500 scholarships. While this increase is great news, the bad news is that many more could use the help, and college is so expensive that even the largest scholarship does not go far. But the difference you have made in 47 lives is wonderful.

There are four categories of scholarships, based on the source of the funds. The first category is scholarships named by the Foundation to honor the donor or by donors to honor one who has passed. The Strom Family Scholarship: Aloha Feijoo-Romero Gov. Jesse Ventura Scholarship: Julia Stensaas Janet Sable Peterson Memorial Scholarship: Katarina Bornhausen Class of 1954/William Beckwith Scholarships: Sebastian Gonzalez and Fatiya Sheikh The James and Barbara Mackie Scholarship: Kathleen Grube Douglas Robertson Scholarship: Peter Hartford Sheila O’Dougherty Scholarships: Marike Kay and Sophia Nelson Patti Bluml Timmons Scholarship: Anjuli Lawler The Class of 1964 Scholarships: Megan Sumera and Forest Paulson Anonymous donor to winners of the DAR and SAR Awards: George Emdin and Liliana Myers JP Story Scholarships: Iliana Zephier and Sophia Stout

Each of these scholarships in this second category was donated by a present or former staff member, or by others in their honor. Irene Tlach Scholarship (Irene was science teacher, with the scholarship provided by business partners): Bisharo Abdi The Jon Strom Scholarship (Jon was the former head engineer): Luke Barnes

Rock Star Scholarship (anonymous current staff): Raquel Gonzalez Juanita Howard Scholarships (mother of English teacher Marcia Howard): Kobe Petrus and Raven Hayes Milton Hughes Scholarship (former counselor): Maya LaChapelle Next Generation Scholarship (anonymous donor): Jaileen Lopez-Perez AVID Scholarship (AVID teachers): Halima Maalim Doug Hanson Scholarship (former alum, teacher and counselor): Anastasia Mlsna-Lubin Counselors Scholarship: Cara Morrow and Jonnesha Walker Sandra Ramberg Memorial Nursing Scholarship (Sandy was a RHS nurse, alum, and RHS parent): Lisa Quito

These seven scholarships were provided by former Media Center librarian, Marge Norling. The Norling-Peterson Scholarship: Miguel Contreras Marge Norling Scholarships: Fatima Flores-Luna, Gaby Flores, Jack Hartford, Sophia Mack, Austin Horng, and Maricruz Rodriguez-Alarcon.

The third category is the “combined donation,” awarded with money from those who designate “scholarship” on their donor form. Any amount, however small, is combined with other donations to form a significant amount, usually $1,000. These “Foundation Scholarships” totaled $13,000 and went to the following students: Jaccob Arkadie, Emma Crosby, Habib Hassan, Halia Maalim, Mohamed Muhamed, Cecila Patlan, Kobe Petrus, Aaron Phillips, Ella Spurbeck, and Lee Xu. Valedictorian Kathleen Grube received the “Foundation Service Scholarship” in recognition of her donating over 500 hours serving others. (See story on p. 1.)

The last category is a scholarship provided to our students by another foundation. The Kopp Family Foundation Scholarship: KM Boogren.

To be awarded a scholarship, the students apply, providing their transcripts, college aptitude scores, and an application containing personal information and two essays. A committee of 12 staff members evaluate the applications, and match those scoring high with criteria for the available scholarships.

If you are interested in establishing a scholarship, please contact Mary Lathrop at [email protected] or at 952-920-8078.

Luke Barnes, winner of the Jon Strom Scholarship, Jon Strom, and Aloha Feijoo-Romero, winner of the Strom Family Fund Scholarship. Luke is at St. Olaf and Aloha is studying at the University of Minnesota, Rochester

A fabulous day of golf brings Teddies togetherNo rain. The sun was shining. The fairways were like a carpet. And the company was fantastic….Of course! The seventh annual Roosevelt Golf Tournament drew 132 Teddy golfers playing with high school friends, enjoying the day, and supporting RHS students.

This year there was a new traveling trophy, the ’59 Pucksters’ Senior Flight Winner, which went to Jay Boursell, Jeff Emerick, Dave Jones, and Rick Sovde, all from ’72.

The Second Flight Winners in first place were Jeremy Jensen ’88, Dave Nygaard ’89, Pete Sax ’88, and Erik Toftner ‘88. In second place were Jamie Erion ’85, Mike (Peach)

Larson ’81, Mike McKay, and Jeff Norblom ’85. After all were back in the clubhouse, there was a fantastic supper and time to enjoy the humor of Master of Ceremonies Dick Jonckowski. Before, during, and after dinner many golfers checked out and bid for the long row of 47 mostly sports-themed silent auction items.

If you are a golfer or come for the dinner only…this day is for you. If you want a great day playing golf, donating a prize, or being a sponsor next September at the eighth annual tournament, contact Tim Martin at [email protected] or Bob Anderson at [email protected] .

“The Pucksters,” all from 1959 (Ted Boran, Gene Nelson, Ron Naslund and Jerry Guptill) have been very loyal RHS golfers. Photo: Angie Lillie

A Fast Fact you might not know about Roosevelt Today

In the 80’s the agriculture classes were discontinued at Roosevelt.

Today teacher Shannon Nordby is in her second year with a “Farm to Table” program with RISE students. If you drive by the school, you can see their greenhouse out front.

Corrections:1. In the last issue Nancy Sanstrom Krinhop should not have been in the memorial section. Nancy was honored with a donation in the “in Honor of” section for those living, and this editor erroneously put it in the “In Memory of” section. To our knowledge she is very much alive. I wholeheartedly apologize. both to Nancy and to Dorinne Stinson, the donor. ML

2. John Shand is a ’50 alum, not a ’60 alum

Some Fast Facts about Roosevelt Today1. Roosevelt has a healthy number of Industrial Technology Classes. There are two teachers teaching auto

technology classes, one teaching welding, and one, Catherine Ludowese, teaching construction—or wood shop, as it used to be called in the old days. Yes, Roosevelt has joined the 21st century, and has a talented woman, teaching shop!

2. “The Arts” is the area designated most often by donors, after scholarships. And Roosevelt has a full arts program. There are three music teachers, two art teachers, one full-time theater teacher, and one full-time dance teacher. The arts are definitely flourishing at Roosevelt..

Did you make it to the RHS auto show?

Last May over 200 cars were on display and more than 500 people

came to check them out.Next show: May 30, 2020,

Check out RHSAthletics.com. We are excited about the new online home of Roosevelt athletics. All of our programs are here, as well as those that are joint programs between the high schools.

Again, I could use your help in a monetary way.  There is a great need in the athletic department for uniforms and equipment.  Be sure to check off "athletics" when you return your Foundation donor sheet.  Any gift of money you contribute to the Foundation and earmark for athletics goes directly to help our student athletes.

One Last Fast Fact about Roosevelt Today

Several years ago, home economics was dropped in Minneapolis high schools. At Roosevelt this meant that all the equipment, (except the stoves and refrigerators in one room) was removed and sold by the district.

What’s old is new again! This year there are almost 200 enthusiastic Teddies enrolled in Culinary Arts. Teacher Ben Rengstorf has not only a teaching degree, but also a culinary arts degree. Unfortunately, despite his qualifications and 200 eager students, the district isn’t able to provide him with funds to teach the class this year, but he hopes to be funded next year. He has sought donations, and continues to raise necessary funds himself. The class of ’78 donated money to help him purchase missing kitchen equipment, and the Foundation twice awarded him grants for groceries. Check his class out on Facebook: See pictures at “Roosevelt Culinary Arts.”
