Making it Work throughhard Work

What happens to foster care children when they are no longer children? In Ashley’s case, she

became homeless. When she was discharged from foster care in 2008, Ashley came to Room at the Inn. While here, she got a job and began to live independently. She applied for disability two years ago because of chronic health issues, but has not yet received approval. Unfortunately, those same health issues forced her to miss work and she lost her job … and her home. So she is back at Room at the Inn.

“When I realized I was going to become homeless again, I hated having to ask for help,” Ashley said. “But when I called the

Housing Resource Center, I asked to go to Room at the Inn. I knew how helpful they are, how they provide transportation, how they could get me the medical attention I needed. They are always so responsive.”

Ashley used the computers at the shelter daily and quickly found a new job. She also helped other program participants with their résumés and job searching. She referred fellow clients to a temp company, and several gained employment.

Client Coordinator Angela Hamilton admires Ashley’s maturity, perseverance and willingness to work. Angie will present Ashley for subsidized housing, confident Ashley will adhere to the program rules and succeed.

During the past fiscal year, Room at the Inn enhanced our capacity to meet the needs of the homeless of St. Louis County today and into the future.

With funding provided by the United Way of Greater St. Louis, Room at the Inn reviewed our operational structure, assessed the effectiveness of our programs and services, clarified personnel assignments, and developed and implemented a process of planning for the future.

As a result of the months-long project, Room at the Inn now has the following:♦ A five-year strategic plan
