bottom-up emissions, for example TNO or EDGAR or HTAP

TROPOMI NOx emissions using DECSO emission inversion algorithm

- DECSO (Daily Emission estimates Constrained by Satellite Observations)

- TROPOMI NO2 daily total column data

- 0.125°×0.125° grid

- multiply TROPOMI NOx emissions with TNO CO2/NOx emission ratio

can be filtered out in several ways.

Here, we simply removepixels with hardly any

after “dealing” withthe biogenic emissionsthere is a good spatialcorrelation between TNOcombustion CO2 emissions and S5p NOx–basedCO2 emissions

› realistic industrial CO2 emissions (Iberia, South America)

› promising, can be used at least as a “sanity check”

› important to use bottom up emissions for year of TROPOMI data (currently 2010 or 2015)

› further investigation of uncertainties, errors

› more tests/refinement S5P biogenic NOx filter

› “weird” spatial patterns CO2/NOx emission ratios

deLaat and vanderA, EGU2020-5535, 6 May 2020, AS3.15

conclusions

conclusions continued …› results strongly depend on quality bottom-up emissions

› DECSO update: also fit biogenic emissions

› explore different possibilities for applying ratio method

› China, Europe & covid-19: how much less CO2

update: 1 May 2020

important/crucial that NOx and CO2 bottom-up emissions have been constructed in a consistent way (consistent emission ratios → physically consistent).

using NOx emissions from one source and CO2 emission from another source quickly introduces large uncertainties in emission ratios and thus derived CO2 emissions.
