Ron Brent Elementary School Plan for Student Success A focus on: LITERACY Foci: Literacy 2012-2013 Ron Brent's school plan for student success is based on 21st Century Foundational Skills in reading, writing, and numeracy. These skills include: critical thinking and problem solving creativity & innovation collaboration, teamwork, and leadership cross-cultural understanding communications, computing and ICT literacy career and learning self-reliance caring for personal health and the environment GOAL: To deepen the learning of our students and improve overall reading abilities Improve improving all students' achievement in Reading Comprehension Improve students' ability to use a variety of strategies to understand and make meaning of materials read with a focus on Aboriginal students VISION: For 90% of our students at Ron Brent to be meeting or exceeding (3,4) expectations in Literacy as outlined by the BCPS, FSA, Jerry Johns and DART. ACTION PLAN: INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES Teachers will continue to use resources from Literacy in Action Series, Adrienne Gear Reading Powers, Literature Circles, Reading with Meaning, Network for Performance Based Schools and Reading Anthologies, Jolly Phonics, Four Blocks, Words their way, Launch into Reading, Daily 5 and CAFE will continue n the Fall of 2011 Teachers will continue to develop content based reading collections that to improve fluency: Nelson readers, Reading A to Z, Reading 44, fiction and non-fiction leveled texts, Aboriginal Story Box, Dolch Words and Primary Success (sight word reading program) Teachers will develop and use strategies from Adrienne Gear's Reading Powers and Faye Brownlie’s strategies for Teaching to Diversity Teachers use expressive and receptive language activities such as: A-B partners, think-pair-share, walk and talk, sharing, circle time and book talks Staff will participate in Primary Project with emphasis on Oral Language, Reading & Viewing and Writing & Representing K teachers , ESL/ESD teachers will use Talking Tables to develop language and comprehension. Support is predominantly offered in the regular classroom setting vs traditional pull out method ESL/D and LA will work alongside classroom teacher to offer one hour of daily additional small group support during scheduled reading intervention time Trained Speech TA: Grade K to 2 targeted intervention for students in need of oral language development

Ron Brent's school plan for student success is based on 21st Century Foundational Skills in

2012-2013 PLAN: STRUCTURES

• Weekly learning team time (PLC) that focuses conversation on Literacy, Numeracy and Social Responsibility. Staff will develop Smart Goals based on data and determine instruction to learning assessment of to assessment for to assessment for isolation to community, identify persons to be the leader (coach) & key participants. Staff will reflect on the following questions as part of their inquiry:

• what are the learning intentions you want the students to achieve (learning intentions)? • how do you know what the goal will look like once you've reached it (criteria)? • what types of assessment methods will you use to collect evidence of success (methods)? • what types of questions and reflections will help you move along to the next step (descriptive

feedback)? • What types of questions and reflections will help you make meaning from your achievements

(self-evaluation/ownership)? • reporting out, timelines and resources needed will be identified each year and used to discuss

plans and future foci • Class sizes in the primary grades will be reduced to 15 students and capped at 18 • Lunch time learning support in the school Library for Grades 2 to 7 • AEW, Counselor, Ab Ed Social Worker, District AEW, Big Brother/Big Sister in school Mentors will

provide additional support in & outside of the classroom for students identified as at risk (academic & behavioural/social support).

• Pre-school students will continue to receive pre-reading instruction through Ready, Set, Learn for ages 3-5 (Spring), Strong Start (0-4) and invited to WTK

• K teachers will collaborate with Strong Start Facilitator and CDC to offer pre-transition activities ACTION PLAN: EVIDENCE/ASSESSMENT

Teachers will continue using AFL strategies: learning intentions, criteria, descriptive feedback,

questioning, self & peer assessment, students as owners of their learning. The 4 big ideas outlining these strategies include: metacognition for learners, nimble and responsive teaching, inquiry mindedness as a

way for learning for life and learning through all four networks. Teachers will ensure that formative assessment is aligned with instruction and summative assessments.

2012-2013 ACTION PLAN: STAFF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Staff will require release days in a combination with after school meetings 1-2 times per month to focus

primarily on: phonemic awareness, reading instructional strategies, oral language development, aboriginal learning styles and culture and assessment strategies

• September to October: 2012: AFL webcast, Assessment for Learning, DART and EPRA training, AFL

Learning Intentions, criteria and descriptive feedback • November to December 2012: AFL review from last year- questioning, self/peer assessment and

ownership, DRA/PM Benchmarks training, FASD learners, EPRA leveled texts • January to February 2013: Oral Language programming, Oral Language Development, Social

responsibility (self-regulation and social responsibility) Cafe & Daily 5 • March to April 2013: Conferencing in reading and writing, The four Blocks, Teaching through music,

Framework for Understanding Poverty • May to June 2013: AFL reflection & Direction, Summative Assessment, Jerry Johns training, Summative

Dart /AFL Reflection and Responses ACTION PLAN: LEARNING TEAM GRANTS LTG AB/TECHNOLOGY: UNBC Partnership 2011-2013.Will technology engage and motivate

Aboriginal Learners? Will integration of technology increase student achievement in targeted academic areas focusing on strands of math, writing and reading comprehension. Emphasis on the following adaptive, inclusive, technology: SMART BOARD, Projector, Document cameras

LTG GSLD: Integration of Technology to support learning styles of LD/FASD profile students. TA for Kerzweil application and targeted dollars to math and literacy based software.

LTG Aboriginal PLAY GRANT: Establish a play routine that promotes the learning of oral language, imagination and citizenship. Inclusion of Aboriginal Elders with emphasis on language and culture.
