R.G.H.O.A. President Sandra Leach RGHOA President’s Report Your new Homeowners Association Board has already been busy. We had our first workshop on Monday, December 18 from 1:00 PM until approximately 3:45 PM. We discussed many things including a 2018 calendar of meetings with membership, management, commit-tee chairs, and between Area Directors and their area members; as well as, 2018 HOA-sponsored events. We discussed the direction the Board wants to take, job responsibilities of Board members, and we have already submitted for our FMO board training. We set the date for our next workshop, and I asked the Board members to bring their ideas, thoughts, suggestions, areas of concern, things to look into, etc. to share with the other Board members, in order to best serve you. On January 2, 2018 we had our first Board Meeting and HOA Membership Meeting for 2018. Although attendance wasn’t as strong as usual due to the weather conditions and holiday travels, those pre-sent seemed very accepting of what the Board had to offer. We touched on events for 2018, a plan to increase not only membership but members’ commitment to helping make their HOA better through participation in committees and events. We asked that the member-ship remember that it is not just the Board and them, but all of us working together that will make our HOA a vital part of our community. It should be a makeup of HOA business and social events, but also gatherings that can address areas of interest or concerns for all of our community. Also, new for the year is an events card such that each eligible resident who joins the HOA for 2018 will get in free to the events shown on the card, provided they bring the card with them to the events. Your new Board is looking forward to seeing, and working with you in 2018. See you on Tuesday, February 6, 2018 for our next meeting. Please come ready to renew your membership, offer your participation on committees and events, and submit topics of interest that the HOA can look into for future gatherings.

JOINED THE HOA YET? WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?

IF YOU LIVE IN AREA 4, I ENCOURAGE YOU TO GET IN TOUCH WITH ME IF I HAVE NEGLECTED TO SEE YOU ABOUT THIS. I HAVE TO ADMIT THAT I HAVE BEEN A BIT NEGLECTFUL IN GETTING "OUT THERE" TO SEE YOU, BUT THE WEATHER HAS BEEN A BIT OF A HANDICAP FOR A HANDICAPPER AS IT IS!! TO ADD TO THAT, I HAVE BEEN ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE WHO GOT WHATEVER IT IS WE WERE SUP-POSED TO BE PROTECTED FROM WHEN WE GOT THE FLU SHOT AND NOT HAD MANY GOOD DAYS. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CALL ME OR STOP BY AND LEAVE YOUR CHECK (NO CASH PLEASE) IN THE DROP BOX IN MY CARPORT AND I WILL GET BACK TO YOU TO CLOSE THE DEAL! IT MAY SOUND LIKE I AM MAKING EXCUSES, BUT I AM NOT AND YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE ANY EXCUSE EITHER FOR NOT JOINING YOUR HOME-OWNER'S ASSN. $15.00 AND YOU'RE IN!

See you soon, Bonnie Quackenbush, 1902 Birkdale Ln., 624-1114

Board meeting Member meeting February 5th February 6th

Tampa Bay Downs By Rich Allen 352-509-2234 I am trying to put together our 5th bus trip for TBD race track. The date is March 31st. The cost will be $24.00 per person once again. The bus will leave from the Auditorium and go directly to the race track and then back home. Once there, everyone will be on their own. Ad-mission is about $3.00 each, and free for Vets and their spouses with ID. I already have 32 people signed up to go. We need at least 42 for the bus company to take us. This is NOT the Tampa Bay Derby week-end, but rather the Stakes Racing weekend like we went to last year. I need to have a final head count by February 10th for a ‘go’ or ‘no go’ decision. If you are interested and have not already emailed me that you would like to go, please do so quickly. My email address is [email protected].

Thank You Evelyne (Eve) Wright This letter is long overdue. I apologize. I want to thank the Community of Rolling Greens for the donations of furniture and house-hold necessities given to me (Eve Wright) for my son, Timothy. He was entirely flooded out of his first floor apartment in Orlando the day after Hurricane Irma. Everything he worked so very hard for was gone, ex-cept the cat. She was found swimming for her life when Tim returned from work. He is still struggling financially since FEMA is still working on his application. Your donations meant everything. We send bless-ings and love to all. Please keep this young man in your prayers. I am Evelyne (Eve) Wright.

Recognizable by poor driving habits, pale skin, and funny accents. Snowbirds can often be seen wearing shoes on the beach or blocking traffic by driving 5 miles under the limit on major roads. Their migra-tion begins in early September and lasts until April.

1st Vice President By Kathy Allen 325-509-2234 January 2018 certainly was a cold and windy month for us here in Ocala (Sunshine State) Florida but many of us realize how cold it was in other states. Duke Energy loved us this January! Now, who will be the first to mention how warm, humid or hot it is? We truly hope our friends and neighbors are feeling better. I look forward to seeing you Tuesday, February 6th, at the RGHOA meeting and on Saturday, February 24th, for the RGHOA spaghetti dinner. Please remember to continue to volunteer, we have so many activities for you to get involved in and enjoy yourself in the process. Thank you.

Thirty-seven athletes speak at least one language in addition to English, including Clare Egan (biathlon), Thomas Hong (short track speedskating) and Chloe Kim (snowboarding), who all speak Korean.

1960 Squaw Valley - The first Games in which alpine events were held on American snow, and the first Winter Games televised in the United States.

Midwest Club Sandra Leach, Secretary December 23, 2017 The evening started with Happy Hour that began at 5 PM. Dinner was served at 6 PM. The food included Lee’s chicken, mash potatoes, coleslaw and Bob’s BBQ ribs, along with other dishes and desserts that were provided by those in attendance. The business meeting was held after the dinner. Birthdays & anniversaries were acknowledged, and then Kathy Allen opened the floor for nominations of new officers for 2018. The following nomina-tions were accepted – Doug Wedel for Vice President, Jan Smith for Secretary, Abby McNeal for Treasurer; however, at that time no one was willing to step up and take over the President’s position. So as of January 1, 2018 the Midwest Club is in suspension until a President is found or the club is disbanded. After the business meeting, the gift exchange was done and the evening ended. Respectfully submitted, Sandra Leach, Secretary

R.G. Library Corner By Barbara Critchfield Happy Valentine's month to everyone! It seems like we just celebrated the beginning of 2018, but already the month of January has gone by so quickly. It was a busy month for me planning the recent Hospice Luncheon and Fashion Show. What a great success it was! You'll see another article in this newsletter letting you know that Rolling Greens earned approximately $2000.00 for Hos-pice, as well as additional dollars from sales of clothing and accesso-ries in our mini thrift store. I don't have the final total yet, but I know that this year's event was very successful. Thanks to everyone who attended and especially to my helpers. I couldn't have done it without such a great team of volunteers. With the beginning of the new year, I put some books about health and nutrition on the coffee table. Seems like several residents borrowed these books, so I hope that helped with your new year's resolutions. The Library has received many new cookbooks recently and so cookbooks will be the new feature on the coffee table for February. You might find some new meals to make for your sweetheart or spe-cial friends. I especially like the chocolate desserts and we all know that Rolling Greens residents are all about desserts! Have you noticed that our own Dr. John Moses (and his wife, Sue Moses) have returned to Rolling Greens for their winter visit? Stop by and visit with Dr. John when you see him reading in his favorite chair in the Library. Several of us have been waiting for your arrival, Dr. John. Welcome back. Thanks to all the residents who provide the Library with a vari-ety of magazines each month. It would be a good idea to black out or cut out the address label to remove your personal information. When the magazines become several months old, they are donated to chari-ties and continue to circulate. I heard at a security presentation a cou-ple years ago that even the barcode on the magazine could contain information about you. Just a safety tip. We've received quite a few movies recently. If you're having a quiet evening, you could pick up a movie at the Library and make a batch of popcorn for some easy entertainment. See you at the Library.

New England Club By Rich Allen The New England Club had their annual Spaghetti Dinner on Jan 11th. Heather Toohey and her helpers helped to cook and serve the meal. They served almost 100 dinners that evening. Great job everyone!! After dinner we had a quick meeting and then moved on to animal racing. We had quite a few winners and congratulations to them all. Feb. 8th meeting will feature our Wine, Cheese and Fruit Festival. This meeting will begin at 6PM rather then 5PM. We moved this event back from May to Feb, so those that might leave by May will have a chance to enjoy this kind of evening. Everyone is asked to provide a bottle of wine, cheese and crackers for the sharing table. Also don't forget to bring some wine and cheese for your own table IF YOU CHOOSE TOO! This gives everyone a chance to have a taste of a wine or cheese that they may never have tried. Also don't forget your wine opener, place settings and eating utensils, plus your wine glass. At that meeting we will hold our annual White Elephant Auc-tion. Please bring a new wrapped gift worth not less then $5.00 to be auctioned off. This might be a good time to re-wrap that not needed Christmas gift. The Club will also be selling tickets for our Mar 8th St. Pat-rick's Dinner. This is a catered corned beef dinner. Cost is $15pp. Dinner includes-- corned beef and cabbage, glazed carrots, potatoes, bread, butter, condiments, plates, coffee, tea and dessert. The caterer will also set up, serve buffet style and clean up. Entertainment TBA. Cash preferred or checks made payable to me. Tickets go on sale Feb. 1st thru Feb. 25th. Hope to see everyone at this enjoyable event.

Woodshop News By Tom James The following have been elected as officers of the Rolling Greens Woodshop: President- Douglas Wedel Vice President- Keith Perkins Secretary- George Konnert Treasurer- Rae Jean James The Woodshop's annual open house was a huge success with a number of new park residents coming down for their first visit; as well as long-time residents dropping by. The annual members dinner will be held on Sunday, March 25th. It will consist of a catered meal served at the West Club House. The details are being handled by Vice President Keith Perkins (585-245-3954) and MJ Robbins (352-509-2330). If the members have any questions you may contact them for information. Larry Rocker is making a very unusual musical instrument, a cigar box guitar. He has a very ornate cigar box for the body and is using cherry wood from his area of northern New York state as well as black walnut for the neck of the instrument. Next members meeting- Tuesday, February 13th at 9:00 AM in the multi purpose room in the Auditorium. Thank you. Questions, please call 624-1375.

Area 1

By Diane Weingartner Area 1 Director

Happy New Year all.

I've been working my way through Area 1, meeting everyone, but not done yet. Have you seen our Area 1 “Park”? It's on lower Ho-lyoke and E. Gleneagles Rd. Come see. If anyone wants to help just drop by. Some of our plants got hit with the hard freeze, but it will look even better when our weather settles down. Thanks to all who have been working on it. Again, I'm here to help. I missed some of you and left my card so feel free to call if you need my help.

Area 4 Bonnie Quackenbush RGHOA Area 4 Director HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY everyone. With that being said, now let's get to the heart of the article this month, which of course is love. There is so much to be said and could be said about love, but I will just assume that everyone has this well covered. If you don't, well.....it's time to make a change. Ok. Going on from that, these are some issues that have been on my mind for awhile. If your Christmas lights are still up...it's now Feb folks! If you’re flying a worn, torn, frayed or faded flag...might want to consider showing honor and replacing it. If you’re not flying a flag at all...might want to consider showing pride in being an American and start flying one. The flag should be displayed from sunrise to sunset on all days, but especially on national and state holidays. It should have a light on it and those solar lights you can get at Walmart, pretty inexpensively, do the trick. If your mailbox is in shambles, it might be nice to replace it rather than wait for management to supply one. After all, it is your mailbox where you receive your mail. Just kind of makes your place look a bit nicer. You might want to add to this looking nicer thing...power washing/painting/mold removal/gutter cleaning, hedge trimming, etc. Now's the time to get a jump on spring cleaning before it gets too hot. (Yes, we will have hot Florida weather again! As I write this, we are expecting 22 degrees tonight.) The roads here in the park are 2 lane. No, there is no white line, but while you are driving around, you might want to see an imagi-nary one and stay on one side of the line instead of driving down the middle. On some of the curves, I have practically been run off "my side" of the road because someone else wants to drive down the mid-dle. Courtesy and caution and of course, you do know that the speed limit is 20 and STOP signs do mean stop, not fly on thru or slow down? Another thing is cars or service/delivery vehicles parking half on the grass and half on the road or in the road totally and you have to drive around them. Please be careful for oncoming cars when you pull out to go around them. Many times they also park so that vision is blocked to see what is coming if you are going to pull out from a side street or driveway. If someone is doing work at your home, you might want to ask them to park off the road. How about waving to others as you drive our roads, both in golf carts and cars? If this is a friendly community, how come some people are not very friendly? Seems my article is a bit different this month, but I just had to get a few things off my mind. Perhaps the biggest one is this.....where is your house number located? Do you even have one displayed? As an Area Director, I often have to find you and believe me, I spend a lot of time looking for your house number and some of them are displayed in a mysterious location on homes! It used to be at one time, all house numbers were also painted at the end of the driveways. I sure wish that management would provide that service and perhaps find a com-pany or someone that could provide that service for us. Management.. are you reading this??? Anyway, house numbers are very, very im-portant for those looking for you....delivery people, guests, fellow resi-dents and the fire department and paramedics. Maybe even long-lost relatives!! In closing, I want to sincerely thank those of you who remem-bered me in my 'alone' times and either stopped by, sent a card, brought some goodies or reached out to me in some small way. It certainly has meant a lot to me and my hope is that many people con-tinue to show concern and care to so many others in this communi-ty. One small gesture can just make that person's day. Love and Valentine's Day isn't just for February. Bonnie Quackenbush,

Area 2 By Linnea Corneilson May I be the first to wish you a Happy Valentine's day! Febru-ary is a month of Ground hogs, Presidents' birthdays and Love.- That is what the world needs more of. As we respect each other, we need to show our kindness, our gratitude, and listen to each other. If there are concerns you have, know that the HOA board is here to listen. Of course we can't promise to solve all problems but we will do what we can, and help you find an answer. Dues are due. The directors have been trying to reach out and we are grateful for your response. If we have not seen you, our phone numbers and e-mail addresses are in the newsletter. You can bring your dues to us, or ask us to come and get it from your home. It is im-portant that you support the "Voice of the Park" by your joining HOA. The negotiation committee will be meeting and your input is important. They want to hear what your concerns are for our new contract. Let's let management know that 90%of the owners want the things the commit-tee is asking for. This is not a time to be willing to let others carry the burden. AND-- the green free tickets will more than pay for your output for dues. Thank you to all who have paid their dues and I hope many of you will come to the February meeting ready to join. The Spaghetti Dinner is this month . The committee has been working already. Buy your tickets. This is the main fund raiser for HOA. Hope to see all of you there on the 24th. We are still looking for chairman and committee members for our standing committees. Please volunteer to serve on one or more. You can work on a favorite project on a one term basis or for the whole year. HOA can only be as good as the members make it.. Committees are a way to meet new people and spend time with those you know and like. No one should have to do all the work-- share the fun. Rolling Greens has much going for it and the people are the reason. The board is willing to help you succeed and are open to new ideas. Like many of you ,I have not liked the cold weather- but when I see the northern snow- filled pictures, I know why I am here. Celebrate our good fortune. Hospice Luncheon and Fashion Show By Barbara Critchfield The recent Luncheon and Fashion Show to benefit Hospice on January 22nd was a great success again this year. A hot meal with a special dessert was served to 216 residents and their guests, catered by volunteers and served by our smartly dressed waitress-es. Those attending were greeted by our own Mr. Tom Oliver who was really dressed to impress in coat and tie. Wow! What a great start to our afternoon. As the residents and their guests arrived, they exchanged their luncheon ticket for a door prize ticket, had time to purchase 50/50 tickets and raffle tickets for gift cards from 23 local restau-rants and a beautiful wine and sweets basket. The fun began after the meal when four volunteers from the Hospice Thrift Store at Six Gun Plaza and four of our lovely Rolling Greens ladies modeled many sharp outfits for us. Thanks to Naomi Minner, Mary Hill, Marilyn Schrader and Francene Preston for repre-senting Rolling Greens in this year's fashion show. One especially talented Hospice model came with a suitcase full of surprises. Wearing her LBD (little black dress), she accessorized with a dozen or more scarfs, shawls, tops and jackets. She showed us how to dress or travel with just a few items for all occasions. Mr. Mike West from Hospice described each of the models outfits as they were presented to the luncheon guests. After the program, guests had time to shop for lots of clothes and accessories when our former Pro-Shop became a mini thrift store. Many of those attending went home with gifts. Thirty-two door prizes, twenty-three restaurant gift cards, the wine and sweets basket and ten 50/50 winnings were presented. All of the quilted and crafty door prizes were donated by Kathy Bull and her friends. We would especially like to thank the following restaurants for their generous donation of gift cards: Miller's Ale House, Lorito's Italian Kitchen, Sonny's BBQ, Blue Highway Pizzaria, Tilted Kilt, Arianna's Pizza, Mojo's Grill, Charlie Horse, Braised Onion, Longhorn, Carra-bas and Brooklyn's Backyard. Gift cards for Las Margaritas, Red Robin, Outback and Olive Garden were generously donated by residents. Abundant thanks goes to all the volunteers who made this day such a great success. Without them this Hospice benefit could not have happened. Naomi Minner has called them "Our Team" and they certainly are our most valuable team. Thank you all so very much for your help. Thanks also to Naomi for allowing us to use her table decorations. They really brightened the day. This special event is a benefit for Hospice of Marion County and the proceeds after expenses help fund Hospice activities local-ly. I'm pleased to let you know that a donation of approximately $2000.00 was earned for Hospice. In addition, several hundred dollars worth of clothing and accessories were purchased at the event and those funds will also benefit Hospice. I'm anxious to hear the grand total in a few days. I especially want to thank my friend, Heidi Beagle, for her support in planning this year's luncheon and fashion show and also everyone who attended, volunteered to help and supported this event. We had a good time and hope you did too. We look forward to having our friend, Kathy Bull, back with us for the next Hospice Luncheon and Fashion Show.

Kingdom of the Sun Concert Band Les Muncaster, Conductor “Overture! Curtain! Lights!” Who doesn’t think of Bugs Bunny when you hear that opening line? We mature adults who remember such things will automatically start humming that familiar tune from the cartoons of our youth. Although the Kingdom of the Sun Concert Band’s February concert series “Overture! Curtain! Lights!” may or may not include anyone named Bugs, Elmer or Daffy, it does include music to evoke memories of times gone by, featuring, among other selec-tions, Leonard Bernstein’s exciting Overture to “Candide” and selec-tions from “West Side Story, in honor of the 100th anniversary of the world-renowned composer’s birth; “Variations on Scarborough Fair”; the stirring “Rushmore” by Alfred Reed; the Theme from “Ice Castles,” featuring our vocalist Marcia Muncaster; and Henry Fillmore’s “Rolling Thunder” march. We hope you will join us for “Overture! Curtain! Lights!” on Saturday, February 24th, 2:00 p.m., and Sunday, February 25th, 3:00 p.m., at Marion Technical Institute, 1614 SE Ft. King Street in Ocala. As always, admission is free and open to the public; donations are appreciated. It’s always wonderful to see so many of our friends and neighbors in the audience. For more information, please call 624-9291 or visit our website at http://kingdomofthesunband.org. The Kingdom of the Sun Concert Band is an all-volunteer, 501(C)(3) organization and proud member of Marion Cultural Alliance and the National Association of Concert Bands.

NY Club By Mary Hill January 18, 2018

A wonderful evening was enjoyed by so many people at our January NY dinner. The lasagna, catered by Miss Joan, was excellent, and everyone had plenty to eat. Dancing to “The Sounds of Time” brought many couples and singles to the dance floor. We have enjoyed them so much each time we have them.

It’s exciting to see so many people still joining our club. That night, we welcomed: Tony Belden, Brian and Pat Lower, Karen & Kent Badders, Charles & Betty Pennington, Greg & Sharon Jacobson, and Cathy & Craig Goodwill. You still have 3 more months this season to enjoy a fun evening out.

Carl & Bev Mest are the only couple celebrating an anniversary this month, 48 years on the 24th. Happy Anniver-sary!

Lots of birthdays this month: Mary Brown and Carl Goodrich, both on the 2nd; Roberta Jones, the 3rd; Michael Davern, the 13th; Rose Tan, the 14th; George Konnert and Dor-othy Sindelar both on the 17th; Dolly LaBarge, the 20th; Jill Bar-clay and Gloria Gotto, the 29th. Happy Birthday, everyone. What better way to start 2018.

Hope you are all looking forward to our February 15th dinner. It will also be catered by Miss Joan, and the menu will consist of several kinds of soup, a variety of sandwich's and dessert. Even though it’s the day after Lent begins, we will still go with a Mardi Gras theme. So get out your masks and wear your beads and join us for another fun evening with the many voices of Joe Carter entertaining. Tickets are only $7.00 per person and, as always, can be bought from Rose Tan at 624-2597; Linda Lee Krebs at 624-2843; or Mary Hill at 724 261-0984. Cutoff date for purchasing the tickets if Feb. 8th. Please remember to bring your own place setting and eating utensils.

A new year has brought us anything but peace, as we all know. But as long as we are able, let’s still spend time with friends and neighbors, enjoying each other’s company and grateful for that time. Happy 2018, everyone!

Another month has passed and most of winter is

behind us, soon the temperatures will begin to rise

and spring will be just around the corner. I love

spring, the smell of flowers in the air and the crack of

a baseball bat marking the change of the seasons.

Enough of the pleasantries. On to the important

stuff. I am placing a survey on the home page of the website and

would invite everyone to take a few minutes and fill it out. I am at-

tempting to identify those sections of the site that people find most

useful. Also, I should mention, I will be out of the country from March

2nd - March 10th, so no updates to the site will be made during this

time period.

Aside from that no other news of note. Please forward any changes

in activities or items to be posted. And again, a reminder if anyone is

interested in helping out with the website please drop me a line at

Old Tom Morris By Michael Stone I recently came across a brand new movie (April 2017) called Tommy’s Honor, about the story of Old Tom Morris and his son, Tommy Jr. The movie was based on a book written in 2007 by the same name. So, I did a little research. I hope you find this article to be accurate and interest-ing. Born Thomas Mitchell Morris in the ‘Old Toon’ of St. Andrews, Scotland, young Tom and his friends would swat spheroids made from wine corks held together with a nail, up and down the streets with homemade clubs in the City now known as the Birthplace of Golf. At the age of 14, Morris began working as an apprentice at the course in St. Andrews under the tutelage of Allan Robertson, widely considered golf’s first professional Golf Club Pro. Noting Tom’s advanced skill as a golfer, Robertson enlisted Tom as a partner, and the pair would often play matches against ‘moneyed gentlemen’, from which they made a pretty fair living. As both the Club Pro and the Head Groundskeeper during this period, Robertson enhanced the original course, now known as the Old Course, mainly by enlarging the size of the greens. He also began design-ing and installing other courses. As his assistant, Tom Morris was deeply involved in the entire process wherever they went. As time went on, Morris became a great champion. He founded the Open Championship in 1860, and he won it four times between 1861 and 1867. Playing professionally well into his 40’s, Tom still holds the record as the oldest winner of the Claret Cup, which he won at the advanced age of 46. Along the way, Tom sired another golfing wonder, Tom Jr., who remains the youngest ever to receive organized golf’s Champion of the Year Award. The senior Morris was dubbed Old Tom to differentiate him from his equally proficient son. Tom Jr. (1851 – 1875) died at only 24 years of age due to a pulmonary hemorrhage, although most believed at the time that the recent loss of his wife and baby during childbirth literally broke his heart. Old Tom began using a ‘gutta-percha’ ball in 1851. This ball was made from a much harder, longer flying rubber-like substance as opposed to the older ‘featheries’ which were obviously softer and lighter. By using this newer more advanced ball in competitions everywhere he went, he helped create a great deal of interest and following for this new product. Allan Robertson ran a company that manufactured featheries. The advent of the gutta put Robertson out of business in short order. He blamed Old Tom for his demise and in the aftermath fired Tom at St. Andrews. Tom negotiated a deal to create a new course at Prestwick, where he became the Club Pro, Keeper of the Greens and the Chief Ball & Club Maker. He initially designed a 12 hole course, which he later expanded to 18. 6 of the original 12 holes are still in operation today! Old Tom’s course was unique for it’s time. He incorporated wind direction, scenic landscaping and differ-ent levels of challenge for the different levels of golfers. Many of the most important Golf Course Architects of the 20th Century considered Tom to be their major influence. He had pioneered Strategic Course Design and also eliminated the Penal System of making players carry objects as their penal-ties. Old Tom installed legitimate water and sand hazards that were consist-ently maintained by his grounds crew. This was not previously done. Old Tom returned to St. Andrews after his time at Prestwick, and remained there for the rest of his natural life. It was during this time at St. Andrews that he devised the concept of ‘top dressing’ his greens using sand. Morris understood that constant foot traffic on the greens was detri-mental to a proper putting surface. The practice remains a staple of greens keepers and golf architects to the current day. He also was the first to use a (push) mower to cut the greens. Old Tom passed away at the age of 87 while working on his course. He was buried next to his son at St. Andrews Cathedral. The Golf Course Superintendents Association of America presents The Old Tom Morris Award to those individuals who, ‘though a continuing lifetime commitment to the game of golf; have helped guide the welfare of the game in a manner and style exemplified by Old Tom Morris’. I believe I read somewhere that Ernie Els was or will be the next recipient of this pres-tigious award.
