RGVFD Memorial Service The RGVFD would once again like to remind you of a beautiful service that they have decided to render to every resident in the park. If you have a family member who passes away and would like to have a memorial ser-vice for him/her here in the park, the volunteer fire dept. is here to help. We will provide a beautiful table set-up, cake, coffee, and a guest book. If there would be more food brought by other people, they would help to serve it. The chair person to contact is Mary McCarthy at 352-

624-2901.

NY CLUB DINNER APRIL 21, 2019

By: Mary Hill

My apologies to everyone that my article did not make it into printing in May. I have been in touch with Erin, who does our newsletter and asked her to run this in June.

Our last dinner of the season was a taco night with all the “fixins’”. Entertainment was a fun horse racing. Our thanks to Chef Joan for giving reasonably priced and delicious meals for so many months. To every one of you who volunteered in the kitchen, thank you, thank you. You are so needed.

We have many people to thank as our season ends. First of all, a very big thank you to Linda Lee Krebs for keeping our club running so well. Thanks also goes to Clarana Caulkins as our treasurer, who has taken care of our treasury for many years. She ended her run with the end of this season. A great job, Clarana. We will miss you. After a very simple vote, next year’s officers will be: President, Linda Lee Krebs; Vice president/treasurer, Terrell Hilgeford, and Secretary, Mary Hill. Linda Lee got several other people to accept various positions to help the club keep going.

Anniversaries during the month of April were: Bob & Carol Brown, 60 years on the 4th, Leonard and Sandy Stiverson, 29 years on the 5th; and Kent & Karen Badders, 46 years on the 6th.

A few special anniversaries that don’t get mentioned in our season, but should be celebrated: Dorothy & Carl Goodrich will be married 60 years on June 13th. Laurel & Michael Davern will celebrate 50 years on August 2nd. Joan & Richard Newton will be married 55 years on August 26th.

Birthdays in April: Paul Ghering, the 4th; Joyce Harris, the 11th; Fran-cene Preston and Marilyn Schrader, the 12th; Cathy Goodwill, the 16th; Rich Allen, the 19th; Charles Pennington, the 22nd; Pat Ghering the 23rd; and Gary Husband the 28th. We realize that there are many of you who don’t ever get mentioned during our season, but we wish all of our members the very best for birthdays and anniversaries.

We will meet again in the fall on October17th. That will be a pot luck dinner with the club furnishing the meat. More information to come at a later date.

So until then, may you all have a safe trip north and a wonderful sum-mer. Here is the Irish blessing wished for everyone, both those who stay and those who travel.

“May the road rise up to meet you; May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, and the rain fall soft upon your fields, and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.”

Important!

We have decided to take a break for the Summer months. We will resume our get together in September.

I want to wish everyone a great Summer!

RG Library Corner by Barbara Critchfield

Greetings from Ohio. Mike and I arrived back here on May 12 after a long day driving through the rain. We are still wait-ing for the warm weather to arrive and take every chance to sit out on the patio and soak up the warm sunshine. The house was in good shape although our second car wouldn't start and needed a new battery. After we got the car started, I've been to the grocery store many times trying to stock up the refrigerator and the pantry. Relocating twice a year is getting to be more of a challenge. We are both missing our Rolling Greens friends and activities.

Our neighborhood swimming pool is now heated. I've walked up to take a look, but haven't tested the water yet. Our neigh-borhood tennis court has had lines recently added for pickleball so Mike will be teaching some new players soon. We have card games on Monday nights and bingo nights twice a month. There is one very small shelf of books to borrow in our club-house and one puzzle. Can you imagine - only one Puzzle!

For those of you who plan to travel during the summer, the Li-brary has a good selection of audio books you may borrow for your trip and bring back for others to enjoy. The Library also has a large selection of movies. You might want to pick out a couple movies and have them on hand for the rainy days. If you're expecting young grandchildren to visit during the sum-mer, there is a small bookshelf behind the door filled with chil-dren's movies, some books and small puzzles.

Please welcome a new Library volunteer, Ronda Owens, who will be covering the Library during the summer and fall. Thanks to all of the very faithful volunteers and especially to Jo Anne Fieschel who takes my place during the summer.

I hope everyone enjoyed the golf cart parade, flag ceremony and Memorial Day barbecue. I'll be looking for some pictures of the day.

Happy Father's Day to all the gentlemen. See you in October.

To do list: 1. Make vanilla pudding, put in mayo jar. Eat in public 2. Hire 2 private eyes, get them to follow each other. 3. Wear a shirt that says “LIFE”. Hand out lemons on the street

why I gathered you here today.” 5. Major in philosophy: Ask people why they would like fries with

that.

6. Run into a store, ask what year it is. When someone answers, yell “It worked!” and run out cheering.

7. Become a doctor. Change last name to: ACULA 8. Change name to Simon, speak in third person. 9. Buy a parrot. Teach it to say, “HELP, I’ve been turned into a

HOA Meeting With Cove The HOA Board had a meeting with Gary and Freda Timmons, who represent Cove Community’s regional management team for Rolling Greens Village on Friday the 26th of April. The purpose of this meeting was to introduce themselves and for the whole Board to do the same, as they will be out of town the day of our next meeting, May 7th, 2019, and to discuss some of the situations in the park that they are working on. They are asking our cooperation as a Board to help the residents in our community understand that every issue described below as bullet points will be handled in a timely manner and they are dedicated to this community and will work with every resident as necessary to accomplish this process. We, as a Board will partner with them to help the residents get used to some of the changes that have been made, and any future changes that will occur, by hosting a wine and cheese get together with all interested residents on the first week in June, and will continue this event every other week or so during the summer months to come to insure the residents that they are very much involved with the operations of this community.

The bullet points are as follows: 1. The sewer system in Area 1 that has created a definite smell, has been worked on, and will be resolved completely in the very near future.

2. The lighting situation in the park is being addressed with an upcoming meeting with Duke Energy regarding the street lighting, and changing out the wooden poles, along with looking into solar lighting for many areas around the park.

3.Street signs will be replaced by blue and white signs. 4.They are getting bids on extending the fencing down Cherry Road Pass.

5.They are currently advertising for security personel. 6.More homes to be removed within the next few months[ 6 are currently permitted to be removed], but some will go slower due to asbestos found

in some homes. 7.Mail boxes will eventually be replaced in the park, and is already in progress.

8.They have a meeting set up with U S Water on May 13th to discuss water quality. 9.The old firehouse will be bought by Cove to convert into the maintenance shop.

10.Repainting of homes must be approved in writing by Cove Management, and there will be 6 or 7 colors that residents would want to see on homes.

11. They would also like everyone to have uniform size house numbers with a standardized size and are black.

These are the most important points that came out of our meeting. We ask every resident that needs to communicate issues concerning the park to e-mail their Area director WITH the proper LOT NUMBER, a de-scription of their situation, which will then be addressed by Cove Management. As an incentive for residents who choose to use the ACH method[ preferred by management] to pay their rent, a $25 gift card will be sent to you, along with a drawing chance for a $200 gift card. Lets all support the HOA and Cove Community to make Rolling Greens Village a true resort to live in!

Come Stroll With Me Submitted by Bonnie Q

Stroll with me...close your eyes… and go back… way back… Before internet...before ISIS, Before AIDS, before Facebook and social networking Before Semi-automatics, before school shootings, before opioids, be-fore Super Nintendo… Way, way, way...back…

I’m talking about sitting on the curb, sitting on the stoop… About ‘Hide-And-Go-Seek’, ‘Simon-Says’, and ‘Red-Light-Green-Light’. Lunchboxes with thermos...chocolate milk, going home for lunch, penny candy from the store, Hopscotch, butterscotch, roller-skates with keys, jacks and Cracker Jacks, Hula Hoops, Slinkies and sunflower seeds, wax lips and mustaches, saddle shoes and Coke bottles with the names of Cities on the bottom.

Remember when it took five minutes for the TV to warm up; When nearly everyone’s mom was at home when the kids arrived home from school…

When nobody owned a purebred dog, when a quarter was a decent allowance, when you’d reach into a muddy gutter for a penny, when your mom wore nylons that came in two pieces, and when all of your male teachers wore neckties and female teachers had their hair done everyday, and wore high heels.

Remember running through the sprinkler, circle pins, bobby pins, ‘Mickey Mouse Clubhouse’, ‘Rocky and Bullwinkle’, ‘Kukla, Fran and Ollie’, ‘Spin and Marty’, ‘Dick Clark’s American Bandstand’ - all on your black and white TV with two knobs- ‘Rabbit Ears. You had to get up to change the channels, and when your mom made you turn it off when a storm came!

To Be Continued Next Month...

About 25 million Americans who are ag-ing in place rely on help from other people and devices such as canes, raised toilets or shower seats to perform essential daily activities, according to a new study docu-menting how older adults adapt to their changing physical abilities. But a substantial number don’t get ade-quate assistance. Nearly 60 percent of seniors with seriously compromised mo-bility reported staying inside their homes or apartments instead of getting out of the house. Twenty-five percent said they of-ten remained in bed. Of older adults who had significant difficulty putting on a shirt or pulling on undergarments or pants, 20 percent went without getting dressed. Of those who required assistance with toiling issues, 27.9 percent had an accident or soiled themselves. The study, by researchers from Johns Hopkins University, focuses on how older adults respond to changes in physical function– a little- studied and poorly un-derstood topic. It shows that about one-third of older adults who live in the com-munity—nearly 13 million seniors– have a substantial need for assistance with daily activities such as bathing, eating, getting dressed, using the toilet, transferring in and out of bed or moving around their homes; about one-third have relatively few needs; and another third get along well on their own with no notable difficulty. For older adults and their families, the report is a reminder of the need to plan ahead for changing capacities.

“The reality is that most of us, as we age, will require help at one point or another,” said Bruce Chernof, president of the Scan Foundation and chair of the 2013 federal Commission on Long-Term Care. Citing Medicare’s failure to cover long-term ser-vices and supports, which help seniors age in place, he said, “We need to lean in much harder if we want to help seniors thrive at home as long as possible.” Previous reports have examined the need for paid or unpaid help in the older popu-lation and the extent to which those needs go unmet. Notably, in 2017, some of the same Johns Hopkins researchers found that 42 percent of older adults with proba-ble dementia or difficulty performing daily activities didn’t get assistance from fami-ly, friends or paid caregivers—an eye-opening figure. Of seniors with at least three chronic conditions and high needs, 21 percent lacked any kind of assistance. But personal care isn’t all that’s needed to help older adults remain at home when strength, flexibility, muscle coordination and other physical functions begin to dete-riorate. Devices and home modifications can also help people adjust. Until this new study, it hasn’t been clear how often older adults use “assistive de-vices”: canes, walkers, wheelchairs and scooters for people with difficulties walk-ing; shower seats, tub seats and grab bars to help with bathing; button hooks, reach-ers, grabbers and specially designed clothes for people who have difficult dressing; special utensils designed to make

eating easier; and raised toilets or toilet seats, portable commodes and disposable pads or undergarments for individuals with toileting issues. “What we haven’t known before is the extent of adjustments that older adults make to manage daily activities,” said Judith Kasper, a coauthor of the study and professor at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The data comes from a 2015 survey con-ducted by the National Health and Aging Trends Study, a leading source of infor-mation about functioning and disability among adults 65 and older. More than 7,000 seniors filled out surveys in their homes and results were extrapolated to 38.8 million older Americans who live in the community. (those who live in nurs-ing homes, assisted-living centers, contin-uing care retirement communities and other institutions were excluded.) Among key findings: Sixty percent of the seniors surveyed used at least one device, most commonly for bathing, toileting and moving around. (twenty percent used two or more devices and 13 percent also re-ceived some kind of personal assistance.) Five percent had difficulty with daily tasks but didn’t have help and hadn’t made oth-er adjustments yet. One percent received help only. Needs multiplied as people grew older, with 63 percent of those 85 and older us-ing multiple devices and getting personal assistance, compared with 23 percent of those between age 65 and 74.

Older people don’t get enough help, study says By Judith Graham The Washington Post

The heat has arrived. This, for me, is the best time to open a book and sit in a cool room and enjoy a good story. Last month our growing group came up with an exciting list of future activities. Mike Critchfield provided a list of Florida au-thors. We would like to invite one for a late fall and early spring meeting/luncheon. Jane Riffe also had a suggestion of inviting an author. Patricia Harman, author of Once a Midwife, would be willing to come for a short visit in January or February. The idea of having authors visit is exciting. Our May book, Before We Were Yours: A Novel, by Lisa Wingate generated a rich discussion. It was brought full circle when JoAnne Fieschel shared a birth certificate of an uncle who had been adopted from the Tennessee Children’s Home Society Orphanage. It is a novel based on the notorious real-life scandals in which Geor-gia Tann, director of the Memphis based adoption organization, kidnapped and sold poor children to wealthy families all over the country. Joan Crawford is just one person who unknowingly adopted children she believed to be orphans. If the history of the orphanage interests you, you can go to YouTube for inter-views with Georgia Tann as well as others directly affected. A copy of the book is in our library. June 5th is our next meeting at 11:15 in the community cen-ter. Our book for this month is The Sound of Glass by Karen White. The main character is from Maine and has moved to South Carolina. Being from New Hampshire, I have enjoyed how the two cultures are a huge part of the interaction of the characters. One example is the love for Moxie,a unique and acquired taste, versus sweet tea. Copies of this book will be available in the library following our meeting. Thanks to Cove for purchasing copies. We have selected our books for July and August: July, Before She Knew Him by Peter Swanson and Au-gust, Where The Crawdad’s Sing by Delia Owens. In an effort to continue our discussions, we hope to have more people join our monthly meetings. Please drop by the first Wednesday of the month.

Teacher: You have 5 dogs and someone wants 2 of them.

How many does do you have left? Me: 5

Teacher: OK, lets say someone forcefully takes 2 dogs. What do you have now?

Me: 5 dogs and a dead body.

I want time to sit, read, take a nap, and snack. Basically, I want to be in kindergarten.

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could put ourselves in the dryer for a few minutes and come out wrinkle free and two sizes smaller?
