Breakout Sessions

• General structure:

70 mins: 10 mins of organizing and splitting off into groups + 40 mins of breakout session discussion + 20

mins of re-convening and reporting back to the group

• Use Slido to suggest breakout session topics/questions during the speaker sessions – find

the Slido links on the Program Schedule

• Reporting back at the end of the breakout session should focus on answering the

following questions:

• What are the major outstanding questions related to the breakout topic, and what

strategies/methods can we use to tackle them?

• What are the prospects for related observations in the era of JWST, and what level of

sensitivity/discovery can we hope for?

Wednesday Afternoon Activities

• No invited/contributed talks are schedule, but there are several

optional activities that you can participate in:

• Nestor Espinoza, new Assistant Astronomer at STScI, will give a tutorial on

“Proposing for Exoplanet Observations with JWST”. If you are interested, please fill out the questionnaire on the Program Schedule

• Goddard Tours: HST Mission Control, JWST Development Complex,

Curiostiy/SAM instrument lab

• Each tour is 30 min long, with a shuttle leaving from Building 34

• Paper sign-up sheets with number of spots for tour capacity will be at registration table on Tuesday; first come first serve, and only sign up for one tour due to limited availability

Final Discussion Panel

• Discussion theme“What observing and analysis strategies will help us to extract constraints on rocky exoplanet characteristics, in particular their atmospheres and surfaces, based on the quality of data in the JWST era? What can we do to improve the science yield from these observations?”.

• Goal:

• 1) try to distill what we’ve heard over the conference into some specific ideas for how we can make progress in exploring rocky planets in the era of JWST

• 2) to further discuss areas of uncertainty in both observational capabilities and models of rocky planets

• 5 panelists w/ past experience in exo observations/predictions will present a slide each on an observation that we can realistically expect for the era of JWST that will make a significant improvement in our understanding of rocky planets…

• But this is a group discussion! Don’t hesitate to jump in with ideas. And if you’d like to present your own idea as a slide, send it to us!

Community Project Working Groups

• If you have an idea for a research project, either theory or observational,

that you think would be great to mobilize the community on, this is the time

to pitch it!

• We’ll have a slot on Friday morning for people to announce/describe their

ideas and provide contact info, and then you can take the opportunity

after the Final Summary on Friday to get organized and continue working if

desired.

• Contact us if you’d like to present a slide for the morning announcement
