Dalla leggenda al romanzoRobin Hood, re dei fuorilegge e arciere imbattibile è una figura che emerge dalle nebbie di una tradizione orale, di un folklore che mescola leggende locali, divinità celtiche e avvenimenti storici. Varie fonti del XIV secolo riportano la diffusione di ballate e poemi sulle vicende del celebre fuorilegge, mentre il primo racconto completo appare intorno al 1500 (A geste of Robyn Hode). Nel XVI e XVII secolo Robin Hood vive sulle scene teatrali tanto da essere oggetto di una pièce incompiuta di Ben Jonson ed essere menzionato in diverse opere di Shakespeare. Nel 1765 Thomas Percy include nella sua raccolta Reliques of Ancient English Poetry l’antica ballata Robin Hood and Guy of Gisborne. Nel 1795 Joseph Ritson pubblica la raccolta Robin Hood: A collection of all the Ancient Poems Songs and Ballads che ebbe enorme influenza. In particolare fu Sir Walter Scott per i capitoli del romanzo Ivanhoe dedicati all’arciere di Sherwood, a contribuire in modo decisivo a fissare i tratti del suo personaggio nella modernità.

L’autore del romanzoSir Walter Scott, considerato il padre del romanzo storico, nasce a Edimburgo nel 1771 e negli anni dell’adolescenza acquisisce una vasta cultura umanistica. Nel 1792 si laurea in giurisprudenza. Nel 1796 la lettura di Reliques of Ancient English Poetry di Thomas Percy, raccolta di antiche ballate che rivalutano il Medioevo, lascia in lui una forte impressione. Sono anche gli anni della diffusione in Gran Bretagna del romanticismo tedesco e il giovane giudice Scott trascura la professione forense per la letteratura e per i viaggi, durante uno dei quali conosce Charlotte Genevieve Charpentier, che sposa e da cui avrà 5 figli. Nel 1801 inizia a scrivere e pubblicare ballate e poemetti tra cui la raccolta The Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border (1802-3) e nel 1805 il romanzo in versi The Lay of the Last Ministrel. Dal 1814 si cimenta nella composizione di romanzi storici, esordendo con Waverlay e proseguendo con successi come Rob Roy (1818) e The Bride of Lammermoor (1819). Nel 1820 scrive Ivanhoe, opera per cui è tuttora universalmente noto e che ispirò anche Manzoni. In seguito a un tracollo finanziario subìto nel 1814 si dedica alla scrittura con tale impeto e produttività da rovinarsi la salute. Dopo due arresti cardiaci muore di tifo nel 1832.

La trama del musicalNella foresta di Sherwood il leggendario arciere Robin Hood è a capo di un gruppo di ribelli, i Merry Men (l’allegra brigata), che armati di arco, bastoni e ironia sfidano i potenti e difendono gli umili. Sono tempi amari: re Riccardo Cuor di Leone è partito per la Terza Crociata e il trono è stato usurpato

dal suo perfido fratello, Giovanni Senzaterra, che vessa il popolo con tasse spropositate e avvalla le ingiustizie e gli arbitrii commessi dalla nobiltà. Tra i sostenitori di Giovanni spicca per crudeltà lo Sceriffo di Nottingham, nemico giurato di Robin Hood. I due si scontrano e si tendono trappole continuamente, ma quando Robin riesce a restituire al cavaliere Alan-a-Dale le sue terre e rovina i piani dello Sceriffo di Nottingham, che intende sposare con l’inganno la fidanzata di Alan, la guerra diventa senza quartiere. Lo Sceriffo rapisce Marian, la donna che Robin ama da sempre, e la condanna al rogo come strega per attirarlo in trappola. Serviranno tutta l’astuzia e tutti gli amici che Robin ha per chiudere la partita con il crudele Sceriffo.

Note di regiaUn preciso contesto storico facilita la comprensione delle imprese di Robin Hood narrate in questo musical diretto dal regista Edward Johnson (The Wizard of Oz, Hamlet, Alice in Wonderland): siamo in Inghilterra nell’anno 1192, quando il re Riccardo Cuor di Leone si trovava in Europa per la Terza Crociata e il fratello, il principe Giovanni Senzaterra, ne aveva usurpato il trono. I costumi prendono dunque spunto dalle fogge medievali, con qualche concessione allo stile cartoon soprattutto per quanto riguarda i colori vivaci, che rendono i personaggi ben riconoscibili e corrispondenti all’immaginario collettivo. Con agilità e destrezza, i giovani attori rappresentano la lotta di Robin e compagni contro le ingiustizie, facendo abile uso di una scenografia multifunzionale: attraverso interessanti e coreografati cambi scena a vista si passa rapidamente dalla foresta di Sherwood al villaggio di Nottingham, e viceversa. Su questo sfondo, la trama si sviluppa in modo dinamico grazie a una bilanciata alternanza di dialoghi e canzoni, prevalentemente appartenenti al genere della musica celtica e folk, i cui versi sono stati appositamente riscritti per meglio adattarsi al contenuto della storia. Anche le coreografie contribuiscono allo svolgimento dell’azione, sottolineando visivamente il significato dei brani musicali interpretati dal vivo dai performer madrelingua… tutto ciò rende lo spettacolo facilmente fruibile dalle classi della scuola media inferiore. Effetti di luci e suoni realizzati con perizia connotano ogni singola scena in modo preciso, per un totale coinvolgimento emotivo.

Al miglior arciere verrà assegnato un premio: un corno da caccia in argento, una freccia anch’essa d’argento e sarà nominato il MIGLIOR ARCIERE DELLE TERRE DEL NORD! Little John (a Robin Hood). So a cosa stai pensando, Robin…

Robin Hood. Esattamente, Little John… (a tutti) preparatevi per una gara da non dimenticare!

Frate Tuck. E la zuppa? L’ho appena fatta.

Robin Hood. Allora resta qui e mangia… noi andiamo!

Frate Tuck. Non riuscite proprio a stare fermi voi.

Little John (si avvia insieme a Robin Hood). Prega per Robin… e mangia piano… altrimenti ti andrà di traverso.

Frate Tuck. Cosa avete detto? …Scherzate? Vengo anch’io... La preghiera funziona meglio… da vicino.

Tutti ridono ed escono.

SCENE 2

Nottingham.The archery competition field.

Prince John sat on a chair. Close to him, the Sheriff of Nottingham.The target is made of a wooden panel with a red circle in the middle.

An archer in royal livery and Robin Hood are ready to shoot.Robin Hood hesitates.

Prince John. Hey, you! …Why did you hesitate? Are you a liar who is not able to use a bow?

Robin Hood. No, your Majesty, on the contrary, I am very enthusiastic about archery!

Prince John. Why do you not dare to test your ability with those fine young men over there?

Robin Hood. With your permission, there is another reason why I refrain myself from shooting, other than the fear of loss and disgrace. Prince John (curious). And what is this other reason?

Nottingham.Il campo della gara di tiro.

Su una sedia è seduto il Principe Giovanni.Vicino a lui lo Sceriffo di Nottingham.

Il bersaglio è fatto da un pannello di legno con un cerchio rosso in mezzo. Un arciere in livrea reale e Robin Hood sono pronti a tirare con l’arco.

Robin Hood esita.

Principe Giovanni. Ehi, tu! …Perché hai esitato? Sei un bugiardo che non sa usare un arco?

Robin Hood. No, Vostra Maestà, al contrario, sono un vero appassionato di tiro con l’arco!

Principe Giovanni. Perché allora non osi mettere alla prova la tua abilità tra quei bravi giovani che sono laggiù?

Robin Hood. Col vostro permesso, c’è un altro motivo per cui mi astengo dal tirare, a parte la paura della sconfitta e del disonore. Principe Giovanni (incuriosito). E qual è quest’altra ragione?

Robin Hood. Perché non so se io e questi arcieri siamo abituati a tirare agli stessi bersagli. Io tiro a bersagli in movimento… di solito.

Risate tra la gente.

Sceriffo. Qual è il tuo nome, arciere?

Robin Hood. …Locksley, mio Signore.

Sceriffo (al Principe). Lasciate fare a me. Sarò io l’avversario di questo coraggioso arciere.

Punta l’arciere in livrea reale.

Principe Giovanni. Oh, signori, avete un nuovo concorrente. Tirate bene con il vostro arco perché entra in gara lo Sceriffo di Nottingham, il miglior arciere di tutti i tempi!

Sheriff (to Robin Hood). So… Locksley, if you are as good as you say you are, you shall compete with the winner of this round. If you then win, I will personally add twenty golden coins to the prize, but if you lose, that dress of green fabric will be taken off you and you will be driven away from the fields with strokes from my soldiers.

Sceriffo (a Robin Hood). Ebbene… Locksley, se sei così bravo come dici di essere, gareggerai con il vincitore di questo giro. Se vincerai, aggiungerò personalmente al premio altre venti monete d’oro, ma se perdi, quel vestito di stoffa verde ti sarà tolto di dosso e sarai scacciato fuori dal campo a frustate dai miei soldati.

Robin Hood. E se io mi rifiutassi di tirare a queste condizioni, mio Signore? Sorretto come siete da tanti soldati, potete facilmente spogliarmi e frustarmi, ma non potete obbligarmi a tendere l’arco e scoccare la freccia.

Principe Giovanni. Se rifiuti questa leale proposta taglierò io personalmente la corda del tuo arco, spezzerò le frecce e ti scaccerò da questa contea come un pauroso codardo.

Robin Hood. Sceriffo, mio Signore, poiché siete considerato il migliore arciere di tutti i tempi… varrà la pena tentare. Accetto la vostra condizione, ma solo se voi accettate la mia.

Sceriffo. E quale sarebbe?

Robin Hood. Se vinco il primo giro avrò il diritto di scegliere il nostro ultimo bersaglio.

Sceriffo. Sei tu, Robin Hood?

Lo Sceriffo diventa rosso dalla rabbia,ma non può fare altro che accettare la condizione.

L’arciere in livrea reale e lo Sceriffo scoccano la freccia. Vince lo Sceriffo che manda la freccia molto vicino al centro. L’arciere esce.

Grida e applausi di approvazione della gente.

Principe Giovanni. Allora, Locksley, vuoi misurarti con lo Sceriffo di Nottingham o preferisci consegnarmi il tuo arco?

Robin Hood. I shall try my luck, your Majesty.

He is about to shoot, but he is stopped by the Sheriff.

Sheriff. No, first shot to the winner!

The Sheriff shoots first and the arrow falls exactly in the middle of the target. Applause from the people and yells “Bullseye! Bullseye! Hooray for the Sheriff”.

Prince John. Locksley, you have lost without even shooting.

Robin Hood. Not yet, your Majesty.

Robin Hood shoots and the arrow lands exactly in the middle of the target, breaking into two parts the arrow of the Sheriff.

Applause and surprised voices of people.

Sheriff. Damn! He must be a devil and not a man flesh-and-blood.

Robin Hood (to everyone). And now… I wish to ask permission from his Majesty to put up a target as we are used to! If you excuse me, I shall go and cut a branch from the nearest willow tree.

Sheriff (to the Prince). Call the guards because Locksley is nothing but Robin Hood!

Prince John. Are you sure? You have been hunting him for ages... Is he really so stupid to show himself here?

Sheriff. This would not be for the first time, he wants to humiliate me in front of my people.

Robin Hood enters with a twig of willowabout one meter long and thin as a finger.

Sheriff. Well, so?

Robin Hood. Here is the new target! Our arrows have to hit the branch.

Sheriff. What trick is this? My ancestors never shot at this kind of target… and I shall not either. I do not shoot if I am sure that I shall lose.

Robin Hood. Tenterò la sorte, vostra Maestà.

Sta per tirare, ma viene fermato dallo Sceriffo.

Sceriffo. No, primo tiro al vincitore!

Lo Sceriffo tira per primo e la freccia cade esattamente nel centro del bersaglio. Applausi della gente e grida “Centro! Centro! Viva lo Sceriffo”.

Principe Giovanni. Locksley, hai perso senza neanche tirare con l’arco.

Robin Hood. Non ancora, vostra Maestà.

Robin Hood tira con l’arco e la freccia si conficca al centro del bersaglio, spezzando in due la freccia dello Sceriffo.

Applausi e voci sorprese della gente.

Sceriffo. Maledizione! Dev’essere un demonio e non un uomo in carne ed ossa.

Robin Hood (a tutti). E ora… voglio chiedere il permesso a Vostra Grazia di mettere un bersaglio come si usa da noi! Se permettete, vado a tagliare un ramo dal salice più vicino.

Sceriffo (al Principe). Radunate le guardie perché Locksley non è altro che Robin Hood!

Principe Giovanni. Ne sei certo? Gli stai dando la caccia da anni... È davvero così stupido da farsi riconoscere?

Sceriffo. Non sarebbe la prima volta... vuole umiliarmi davanti alla gente.

Robin Hood rientra con un ramoscello di salicelungo circa un metro e sottile come un dito.

Sceriffo. Beh, allora?

Robin Hood. Ecco il nuovo bersaglio! Le nostre frecce dovranno colpire il ramo.

Sceriffo. Che trucco è questo? I miei antenati non hanno mai tirato a un bersaglio di questo tipo... e neanch’io lo farò. Io non tiro se sono sicuro di perdere.

Prince John. Locksley, shoot, and if you hit a target like this I will say that you are the first man who has ever done it.

Robin Hood. I shall do my best, your Majesty.

Robin Hood stretches his bow again, he takes aim carefully.The arrow breaks in two pieces the willow branch. An explosion of applause follows.

Sheriff. Damn, here are your twenty golden coins.

Prince John (approaches to Robin Hood). And they will become fifty if you wear the livery and join our service as an archer of my body guard and stay on our side.

Robin Hood. Forgive me, my Lord, but I swore that if I rejoin the service it shall be again to your royal brother, King Richard the Lionheart.

Prince John (panting). What a pity. Here is the silver horn and the arrow that you won.

Robin Hood (takes the arrow and puts it with the others, then he takes the horn). I thank you, your Majesty. It is a beautiful horn...

The Sheriff puts his hand on his sword to extract it. Robin Hood sees him.

Robin Hood. But mine is better, my Lord.

He takes his horn and blows it.Onstage come Much and Little John with their bows pointing at the Sheriff.

Robin Hood (he takes a knife from his pocket and suddenly waves it across the Sheriff’s neck). No one comes closer. Let me go or this will be the day when your people have to choose a new Sheriff.

The Prince raises his hands with accuracy.

Prince John. Do you honestly prefer being an outlaw rather than an archer in livery? How foolish.

Principe Giovanni (si avvicina a Robin Hood). E diventeranno cinquanta se indosserai la livrea ed entrerai al nostro servizio come arciere della guardia del corpo e rimarrai al nostro fianco.

Robin Hood. Perdonatemi, mio Signore, ma ho giurato che semmai riprenderò il servizio sarà di nuovo presso il vostro regale fratello Re Riccardo Cuor di Leone.

Principe Giovanni (sbuffa). Che peccato. Ecco la freccia e il corno d’argento che ti sei guadagnato.

Robin Hood (prende la freccia e la mette tra le altre e poi prende il corno). Vi ringrazio, vostra Maestà. È un bel corno...

Lo Sceriffo mette la mano sulla spada per estrarla. Robin Hood lo vede.

Robin Hood. Ma il mio è migliore, mio Signore.

Prende il suo corno e suona.In scena arrivano Much e Little John con gli archi puntati sullo Sceriffo.

Robin Hood (prende un coltello dalla tasca e a sorpresa lo punta al collo dello Sceriffo). Che nessuno s’avvicini. Lasciatemi andare o questo sarà il giorno in cui dovrete scegliere un altro Sceriffo.

Il Principe alza le mani con accuratezza.

Principe Giovanni. Sinceramente preferisci essere un fuorilegge che un arciere in livrea? Che stupido.

Robin Hood. Your Majesty, I prefer the freedom to choose my destiny. This is what I want for me and my mates. Nobody moves!!! I promise I will release the Sheriff when we reach the forest. Thank you for the arrow, your Majesty!

The forest.The same day.

Robin Hood and Friar Tuck practise fighting with some sticks.They keep fighting while they speak.

They fight.

Foresta.Stesso giorno.

Robin Hood e Frate Tuck si esercitano combattendo con dei bastoni.Continuano a combattere mentre parlano.

Frate Tuck. Robin, risparmiami. Lo sai che so solo pregare.

Robin Hood. E mangiare! Forza Tuck! La vita nella foresta è dura. Devi imparare a difenderti.

Frate Tuck. Sono tutto sudato.

Lottano.

Robin Hood. Togli il pollo che hai nella tasca e sarà più facile muoverti.

Lottano.

Frate Tuck. Sei troppo veloce e troppo forte.

Robin Hood. Forza… alza quel bastone. Sai come si dice… Mens sana in corpore sano.

Frate Tuck (affannato). Basta, frena… Non ce la faccio più. Acqua… un po’ d’acqua.

Robin Hood si ferma. Frate Tuck si siede a terra e beve.

Robin Hood. È inutile Tuck, ci ho pensato bene, non funzionerebbe… E poi io che cosa potrei offrirle? Ho soltanto una capanna nella foresta… Io sono un fuorilegge, ecco cosa sono. La mia non è una vita che si conviene ad una signorina… sempre a scappare… a fuggire… a combattere… a nascondermi… Che razza di avvenire potrei offrirle…?

Frate Tuck. Per l’amor del cielo figliolo, tu non sei un fuorilegge, anzi un giorno tu sarai nominato un grande eroe, e su di te scriveranno romanzi, commedie e fiabe per bambini…

Robin Hood. Sì… le fiabe…

Sheriff. This is a warning. Next time we shall take away more if you do not do what the law says.

Marian. Only our honour and our lives are left.

Sheriff. You decide.

Robin Hood exits.

Robin Hood. Ecco, sono stato graziato… anche senza essere stato arrestato. Frate Tuck (ride). Oh... Robin… ma tu non senti odore di… bruciato?

Robin Hood annusa l’aria. Da lontano arriva il fumo.

Robin Hood. Sì… di pane bruciato! Oh no, Marian!!! Seguimi, Tuck. Dai... Corriamo!!!

Esce.

Frate Tuck. Ecco, si ricomincia.

Segue Robin Hood.

SCENA 4

Foresta.Vicino al mulino.

Fumo dappertutto. Lo Sceriffo tiene Marian che cerca di entrare nel mulino in fiamme. Robin Hood e Frate Tuck sono nascosti tra gli alberi.

Marian (piangendo). Lasciatemi andare, vi supplico.

Sceriffo. Lo sai come funziona la legge: se non paghi la tassa sul macinato, veniamo noi a prenderla.

Marian. Ma mi state bruciando il mulino.

Sceriffo. Questo è un avvertimento. La prossima volta ti toglieremo molto di più se non farai quello che la legge dice.

Marian. Ci rimane solo il nostro onore e la vita.

Sceriffo. Vedi tu.

Robin Hood esce.

Robin Hood. Let her go, sir!

Sheriff (to Marian). Who is this? A friend of yours?

Robin Hood. Not of yours indeed. I said let her go.

Sheriff. A friend who is not afraid of death?

Robin Hood. Let her go or you will taste my arrow.

Sheriff (annoyed). Robin Hood!

Marian stamps on the foot of the Sheriff.

Sheriff. Ouch…

The Sheriff releases his hands for a while, just enough for Marianto free herself and run towards the burning mill. Friar Tuck stops her. Robin

Sceriffo (irritato). Robin Hood!

Marian pesta il piede dello Sceriffo.

Sceriffo. Ahia…

Lo Sceriffo molla le mani per un attimo, giusto quanto serve a Marian per liberarsi e correre verso il mulino in fiamme. Frate Tuck la ferma. Robin

Hood colpisce alla testa lo Sceriffo con un bastone, che cade a terra.

Frate Tuck. Non entrare figlia mia. Le fiamme ti inghiottiranno.

Marian. Cosa farò ora? Il mulino era l’unica cosa che mi era rimasta…

Piange.

Robin Hood. Marian.

Marian. Come sai il mio nome?

Frate Tuck. Lo conosciamo tutti.

Robin Hood (lancia un’occhiata a Tuck per farlo stare zitto). Marian, io sono Robin e questo è Frate Tuck. In questa foresta ci sono tante persone che possono proteggerti.

Frate Tuck. Confermo, cara figliola. Sei in buoni mani.

Robin Hood. Vieni con noi e non dovrai più pagare nessuna tassa ingiusta. Sarai libera dalle crudeli leggi dello stato e della chiesa.

Marian. I thank you Robin, but what shall become of the mill?

Robin Hood. I promise you that we will build it again.

Friar Tuck. Yes, because life without bread is no life.

Robin Hood. But now, we have to protect you.

Marian. Ok… I thank you.

Hanno appena finito di mangiare.

Little John. Robin, raccontaci ancora una delle tue storie sul nostro re, Riccardo Cuor di Leone.

Frate Tuck. Sì… ma una di quelle… che possono sentire anche le orecchie di una gentile signorina.

Tutti ridono.

Robin Hood. Va bene… se proprio insistete. Si racconta che, quando Riccardo era ancora un giovane principe, ogni estate lui e i fratelli facevano le gare di forza tra di loro. Uno dei fratelli disse: “Fate correre un cavallo in cerchio...” e mentre il cavallo girava intorno, il principe è riuscito a sellare il cavallo in corsa.

Frate Tuck. Beh, qualsiasi ragazzino può salire così su un cavallo.

Will Scarlett. Specialmente tu, Tuck, che non riesci neanche a stare in sella con un cavallo fermo.

Tutti ridono.

Robin Hood (riprendendo). Un altro fratello disse: “Prendete un coniglio e lasciatelo correre… poi lo raderò mentre corre...” e ha fatto proprio così come ha detto…

Everybody. No!!! Poor rabbit!!!

Everyone laughs.

Il nostro popolo ora ne subisce le conseguenze perché lui ha aumentato le tasse per arricchire le casse dello Stato.

Marian. Ci ha preso tutto.

Frate Tuck (guarda Marian). Sì, anche l’ultimo tozzo di pane.

Robin Hood. Infine arrivò il turno del nostro amato Re Riccardo… Proprio in quel momento iniziò a piovere. Il nostro Re disse: “Io posso respingere ogni goccia d’acqua con la mia spada”. Pioveva a dirotto e il Re Cuor di Leone muovendo velocemente la spada sulla propria testa riuscì a respingere ogni singola goccia senza mai bagnarsi.

Marian. Re come lui, purtroppo, sono un’eccezione.

Robin Hood. Spero di rivederlo un giorno e lottare al suo fianco contro l’ingiustizia.

Robin Hood. Hai qualche amico che può garantire per te?

Alan-a-Dale. Finché ero ricco, avevo tanti amici… e adesso che non ho un soldo sono scappati tutti. Mi resta solo la preghiera ora.

Will Scarlett. E ha funzionato… perché hai incontrato nientemeno che Robin Hood (punta Robin), che aiuta tutti quelli che si trovano in difficoltà.

Principe Giovanni. Cosa ti è successo? Hai mal di testa?

Sceriffo. Robin Hood è il mio mal di testa. Ma concentriamoci su altro.

Principe Giovanni. Alan-a-Dale dovrebbe essere già qui con il denaro… sta ritardando.

Sceriffo. Un altro castello per voi?

Principe Giovanni. Non so cosa farne… Anzi, te lo regalo... ti regalo il castello con tutti quelli che lo abitano.

Sceriffo. Questo sì che è un bel regalo. Alan-a-Dale senza patrimonio e senza sposa in un colpo.

Prince John. Without wife?

Sceriffo. Perdonatemi, l’ho tenuto nascosto fino... all’ultimo momento. (In segreto.) Non volevo che Alan-a-Dale ritornando in città ne venisse a conoscenza… E poi Lady Anne saprà che Alan-Dale è ancora vivo solo dopo che ci saremo sposati.

Entrano Alan-a-Dale e Robin Hood con l’elmo in testa.

Principe Giovanni. Ah, parli del diavolo… (Ad Alan.) Siete arrivato, sir Alan-a-Dale? Sceriffo. Vi davamo per disperso.

Alan-a-Dale. Sua Maestà, mio Signore. Sono arrivato così come vi ho promesso.

Sceriffo. Avete portato i soldi, Alan-a-Dale?

Alan-a-Dale. No, mio Signore, non vi ho portato i soldi.

Principe Giovanni. E perché allora siete venuto, se non avete le 400 monete d’oro per pagare il debito?

Alan-a-Dale. Signore, volete che io m’inginocchi davanti a voi? (Silenzio.) Ricordatevi bene, saprò difendere le mie terre se necessario, userò la mia spada e quella la so usare molto bene.

Sceriffo. Non vi state comportando da cavaliere adesso, signore! Le vostre terre sono adesso nostre di diritto.

Principe Giovanni. Va bene. Farò una piccola eccezione alla legge... Diciamo che invece di sequestrare le vostre proprietà le acquisterò e poiché valgono più di 400 monete d’oro sono disposto a darvi 500 monete d’oro.

Alan-a-Dale (furioso ma cerca di fingere interesse). Ne può aggiungere altre 100? La terra intorno al castello è molto fertile.

Sceriffo (guarda il Principe che gira la testa). No, 600 non possiamo. Posso comunque aggiungerne io altre 50.

Alan-a-Dale (a Robin Hood). Ne ho visti tanti di cagnacci nella mia vita, ma così avidi mai. No, (con sarcasmo) egregi signori, non avrete il mio castello. Tenete!!!

Robin Hood prende la bisaccia e versa sul tavolo 400 monete d’oro.Escono tutti e due.

Principe Giovanni. E’ più intelligente di quanto pensassi. Peccato, mi stavo già abituando all’idea di possedere la sua terra.

Sheriff (he stands up furious). When you become King of England you shall have all the land you want.

Prince John. Pray for this to happen as soon as possible, because waiting makes me very nervous…

The forest. Robin Hood, Alan-a-Dale, Marian, Friar Tuck.

Alan-a-Dale. I am in your debt for life, Robin Hood. Robin Hood. Oh no, you owe me nothing. You are an honest and brave man.

Alan-a-Dale. And the 400 golden coins? I shall not be myself until I can return them to you.

Alan-a-Dale. E le 400 monete d’oro? Non sarò io fino a quando non potrò restituirtele.

Frate Tuck. Non conosci Robin. Questi soldi ritorneranno presto nelle nostre tasche.

Robin Hood. …E molto presto. Little John mi ha informato che lo Sceriffo si sposa domani… e per andare dal suo castello alla chiesa dovrà passare per un tratto nella foresta.

Frate Tuck. E visto che questa foresta è il regno di Robin, lui dovrà… (sarcastico) pagare una certa tassa… di…?

Alan-a-Dale. Di… 400 monete d’oro!

Tutti ridono.

Robin Hood. Adesso capisco perché lo Sceriffo voleva renderti debole togliendoti la tua terra.

Frate Tuck. Non penso che quella povera creatura sappia veramente chi sta per sposare.

Alan-a-Dale (furioso, cammina a destra e a sinistra). Lo Sceriffo me la pagherà!

When the Sheriff takes from his purse a golden cointo put on the plate, Robin Hood rushes towards him

and takes the purse from his hands.

Quando lo Sceriffo prende dalla propria bisaccia una moneta d’oroper metterla sul piatto Robin Hood si precipita da lui

e gli toglie la bisaccia dalle mani.

Robin Hood/Frate. Che generosa offerta, Sceriffo. Sembrano 400 monete d’oro, proprio quanto serve per rifare l’altare. Molto generoso Sceriffo.

Sceriffo (si avvicina a Robin Hood). Che significa tutto questo circo?

Robin Hood/Frate. Non vi preoccupate, abbiamo finito con la prima parte e adesso passiamo alla cerimonia. Il Vescovo sicuramente sarà già vestito e pronto.

Robin Hood si mette in mezzo tra la coppia.

Robin Hood/Frate. Con il diritto che la Santa Chiesa mi ha dato… inizio! Bellissima Lady Anne di Ashwell e tanto rispettato Sceriffo… Vi guardo e se devo essere sincero davanti a Dio… e devo essere sincero… non mi piace proprio questo abbinamento.

Lo Sceriffo non capisce niente e si agita. Robin Hood continua.

Robin Hood/Frate. No, non mi piace proprio. Ma il matrimonio oggi ci sarà e vi dico anche che Lady Anne si sposerà oggi in questa chiesa… ma non con lo Sceriffo di Nottingham, bensì…

Prende il corno dalla tasca e suona.Alan-a-Dale entra in chiesa.

Robin Hood/Frate (toglie il cappuccio). Bensì con il suo vero promesso sposo Alan-a-Dale.

Robin Hood. Tuck, portali via da qui. Lo Sceriffo non capisce le buone maniere purtroppo. Ritiratevi tutti nella foresta, io vi raggiungo.

Alan-a-Dale. Be careful friend.

Everyone exits.

SCENE 10

The forest.Sheriff, soldier, Marian, Robin Hood.

The Sheriff hides behind some trees with the Soldier. Robin Hood arrives, he looks around and blows the horn.

Little John and Marian arrive.

Marian non parla.

Sceriffo. Hai una pelle delicata, quando il ferro ardente toccherà la tua pelle farà molto … molto male.

Marian gira la testa dall’altra parte.

Principe Giovanni (avvicinandosi). Niente?

Sceriffo. Non ha detto una parola... Maledizione! Forse sto solo perdendo tempo. Forse è meglio bruciare la foresta… così che Robin Hood e i suoi compagni saranno obbligati ad uscire come dei ratti…

Frate Tuck. Robin, mi dispiace dirtelo, ma lo Sceriffo ha annunciato che domani a mezzogiorno Marian, verrà condannata come strega e sarà arsa sul rogo nella piazza di Nottingham. Assisterà alla condanna a morte anche il Principe Giovanni.

Robin Hood si alza in piedi e mette le mani tra i capelli.

Robin Hood. Marian! È tutta colpa mia…

Little John (avvicinandosi). Abbiamo bisogno di un piano.

Entra Will Scarlett correndo.

Robin Hood. Will, novità?

Will Scarlett. Sì, Robin. Lo Sceriffo è tornato al suo castello e sta radunando i suoi uomini migliori. Ha rafforzato le guardie alle porte.

Robin Hood. Che sia dannato!

Tomorrow, England shall tremble because we shall give a fright to our enemies, as our King Richard the Lionheart is doing. Our King is fighting our external enemies, we shall fight our internal enemies.

SCENE 13

In front of the Sheriff’s castle.Two guards stand at the gate.

Friar Tuck, who pretends to be drunk, enters.

Friar Tuck. La-la-la, la-la-laaaaa. (He sings). La-la-la, la-la-laaaaa. (He sings.) My sirs, I have got a bit… this much… lost. (He falls on the guards and they try to hold him up.) Sorry! Sorry… I am also a bit… this much… tired.

While Tuck distracts the guards, Robin Hood approaches.

Guard 1. Well, well, (they laugh) a dead-drunk friar.

SCENA 13

Davanti al castello dello Sceriffo.Due guardie sorvegliano il portone.

Entra Frate Tuck che finge di essere ubriaco.

Frate Tuck. La-la-la, la-la-laaaaa. (Canta.) La-la-la, la-la-laaaaa. (Canta.) Signori miiiei, mi sono un po’… tanto così… perso. (Cade sulle guardie e loro lo sostengono.) Scusate! Scusate… sono anche un po’… Tanto così… stanco.

Mentre Tuck distrae le guardie Robin Hood si avvicina.

Guardia 1. Ma tu guarda, (ridono) un frate ubriaco fradicio.

Guardia 2. La chiesa è lontana da qui, frate.

Frate Tuck (all’improvviso senza fingere). Eh, sì, Dio da tanto tempo ha abbandonato questo posto.

Le guardie si guardano. Frate Tuck e Robin Hood danno loro un colpo in testa.Le guardie cadono.

Robin Hood. Ti ringrazio Tuck. Resta qui e se si risvegliano ripeti la procedura.

Frate Tuck. Ma Robin… e il nostro piano?

Robin Hood. È troppo rischioso per te. Vado da solo. Quando vedi Little John digli che ci vediamo a Nottingham domani.

Apre il portone, entra e scompare.

Friar Tuck. Robin… Robin! How stubborn!!!

He exits running.

SCENE 14

The Sheriff’s castle.In the sheriff’s bedroom.

The room is illuminated only by a candle. The Sheriff stands in front of the window, wearing a nightgown.

Robin Hood enters and stands at the door.

Sheriff (without turning). Everything quiet down there? I heard noises.

Robin Hood. Oh yes, sir. Everyone is sleeping.

Sheriff (turns). What? Why are they asleep?

The Sheriff cannot see that it is Robin Hood.

Robin Hood. Oh, yes… they just fell asleep suddenly.

Sheriff. Who are you? Come into the light.

Robin Hood. For many years you have been hunting for me… you should recognise me even in this darkness.

Sheriff (almost suffocated by fear). Robin Hood?!

Castello dello Sceriffo.Stanza dello Sceriffo.

La stanza è illuminata solo da una candela. Lo Sceriffo con una camicia di notte è in piedi davanti alla finestra.

Entra Robin Hood e si ferma davanti alla porta.

Sceriffo (senza voltarsi). Tutto tranquillo giù? Ho sentito dei rumori.

Robin Hood. Oh sì. Tutti dormono.

Sceriffo (si volta). Cosa? Perchè dormono?

Lo Sceriffo non vede che è Robin Hood.

Robin Hood. Eh, sì … colti da un colpo di sonno.

Sceriffo. Chi sei? Vieni alla luce.

Robin Hood. Sono anni che mi date la caccia… dovreste riconoscermi anche al buio.

Sceriffo (quasi soffocato dalla paura). Robin Hood?!

Robin Hood. Mandarmi un invito nel vostro castello sarebbe bastato. A che vi servono le guardie… a che vi serve aspettare domani per catturarmi in piazza a Nottingham, sacrificando la vita di un’innocente ragazza? Volevate vedermi… Eccomi qua!

Fa un passo verso la luce.

Sceriffo (si avvicina piano alle armi che sono appese al muro). Pensi di essere invincibile?

Robin Hood (una voce tranquilla). E voi pensavate di vincermi?

The Sheriff takes an axe from the wall and prepares to hit Robin.Seeing that Robin is not moving, he throws an axe at him, too.

Lo Sceriffo prende dal muro un’ascia e si prepara a colpire Robin.Vedendo che Robin non si muove, lancia anche a lui un’ascia.

Robin rimane impassibile. Allora lo Sceriffo prende dal muro due spade e una la lancia a Robin.

Anche in questo caso Robin non accetta di combattere.

Robin Hood. Quante volte abbiamo combattuto?

Sceriffo. Tante!

Robin Hood. Quante volte avreste potuto uccidermi? Sceriffo. Molte.

Robin Hood. E secondo voi perché non siete mai andato fino in fondo?

Sceriffo. Basta parlare, combatti.

Lo Sceriffo si lancia verso Robin,ma l’ultimo lo schiva senza prendere in mano la spada.

Robin Hood. Ve lo dico io perché…

Lo Sceriffo cerca di ferire Robin, ma l’ultimo di nuovo lo schiva.

Robin Hood. Io vi servo… chi sareste stato senza di me?

Lo Sceriffo cerca disperatamente di ferire Robin, ma l’ultimo di nuovo lo schiva.

Robin Hood. …Uno sceriffo qualsiasi…

Lo Sceriffo colpisce questa volta Robin ferendolo al braccio.

Robin Hood (rimane tranquillo e continua). …Ma adesso sarete ricordato come il più grande nemico di Robin Hood. Suona bene, no?

Sceriffo. Ti ammazzo!

Si lancia verso Robin che lo schiva.Lo Sceriffo inciampa e cade a terra.

Robin Hood (approaches). You know very well that today you shall not kill me. What will the legend say? Robin Hood… was killed in the room of the Sheriff in the middle of the night… No… it is not intriguing enough… There is no glory, no honor!

Sheriff. I do not care. I want you dead!!!

Robin Hood stands up and goes to the window.

Sheriff (furious). Your end has arrived!!!

The Sheriff stands up, takes the sword and launches himself towards Robin. Robin dodges him and the Sheriff thrusts out the window, falls down and dies.

Robin Hood (looking down from the window). You were much better as an archer than a man.

Robin takes a long sigh, takes some clothes of the Sheriff,his armour and sword, and exits.

SCENE 15

The lodge in the square of Nottingham.A stake has been set up in the centre of the scene.

Prince John, Robin Hood/Sheriff, Marian, Little John and then Alan-a-Dale.Robin Hood disguised in the clothes and armour of the Sheriff and with a

helmet on his head.

Prince John. Dear Sheriff, why are you all covered? Are you afraid of Robin Hood shooting an arrow at your face?

He laughs.

Robin Hood/Sheriff. Oh, I am not afraid of anything. I have created a perfect plan. And… this helmet is… a sign for my men: when I take it off, they shall draw their weapons.

Prince John. I only see my men. And where are yours? I cannot see helmets nor armour.

Robin Hood (si avvicina). Lo sapete bene, che oggi non mi ucciderete... Cosa dirà la leggenda? Robin Hood… è stato ucciso nella stanza dello Sceriffo nel cuore della notte… No… non è abbastanza intrigante… Non c’è dà gloria, né onore!

Sceriffo. Non m’importa. Ti voglio morto!!!

Robin Hood (blocca lo Sceriffo con le mani). Sì, mi volete uccidere nella piazza di Nottingham… dove mi vedranno tutti così che voi possiate vantarvi… come un pavone.

Robin Hood si alza e va alla finestra.

Sceriffo (furioso). E’ arrivata la tua fine!!!

Lo Sceriffo si alza, prende in mano la spada e si lancia contro Robin.Robin lo schiva e lo Sceriffo si scaraventa dalla finestra, cade a terra e muore.

Robin Hood (guarda giù dalla finestra). Sei stato più bravo come arciere che come uomo.

Robin fa un lungo sospiro, prende i vestiti dello Sceriffo,l’armatura, la sua spada ed esce.

SCENA 15

La loggia nella piazza di Nottingham.In mezzo alla scena è allestito un rogo.

Principe Giovanni, Robin Hood/Sceriffo, Marian, Little John e poi Alan-a-Dale.Robin Hood con i vestiti dello Sceriffo e con un elmo in testa.

Principe Giovanni. Caro Sceriffo, perché sei tutto coperto? Hai paura che Robin Hood ti lanci una freccia dritto in faccia?

Ride.

Robin Hood/Sceriffo. Oh, io non temo nulla. Ho ideato un piano perfetto. E… questo elmo è… un segno per i miei uomini: quando lo toglierò loro prepareranno le armi.

Principe Giovanni. Vedo solo i miei uomini. E dove sono i tuoi uomini? Non vedo elmi e armature.

Robin Hood/Sheriff. I told them to dress like farmers to hide their swords…

Prince John (looks surprised). I would have never thought of that, you are turning into a great strategist.

Robin Hood/Sheriff. I have great enemies!

Prince John (laughs). You have a strange voice today…

Robin Hood/Sheriff. Well… I had a bad night…

Prince John (laughs). Oh really? I hope you shall not fall asleep in the best moment. Look, it is almost mid-day and Robin Hood has not appeared yet. I suggest that we start without him. (He yells.) Bring the young woman here!

Robin Hood winks at Little John.A moment later, Little John enters with Marian.

She is wearing a sack-cloth dress, messy hair and has a red sign on her chest.When Robin sees her, he clenches his fists and stands up.

Robin Hood/Sheriff. I must approach her.

Robin Hood goes down the lodge and approaches Marian.He takes off the hemlet and blows the horn.

Principe Giovanni (ride). Hai una voce strana oggi…

Robin Hood/Sceriffo. Eh… ho avuto una nottata faticosa…

Principe Giovanni (ride). Ah sì? Spero che non ti addormenti nel momento migliore. Guarda che è quasi mezzogiorno e Robin Hood non è ancora apparso. Direi di iniziare senza di lui. (Grida.) Portate la ragazza!

Robin Hood/Sceriffo. Lasciate che la portino i miei uomini, Maestà, sono i migliori.

Principe Giovanni. Certo, questa è la tua battaglia.

Robin Hood fa cenno a Little John.Un momento dopo, Little John torna con Marian.

Lei ha un vestito di iuta, i capelli spettinati e ha un segno rosso sul petto.Robin quando la vede stringe i pugni e si alza.

Principe Giovanni. Rilassati, Sceriffo.

Robin Hood/Sceriffo. Devo avvicinarmi a lei.

Robin Hood scende dalla loggia e si avvicina a Marian.Toglie l’elmo e suona il corno.

Quando il Principe Giovanni vede che è Robin, si alza.

Marian. Robin Hood!

La sua guardia si lancia contro Robin Hood.

Robin Hood. Little John, prendi Marian... e questa volta portamela in salvo.

Little John. At the cost of my life, Robin!

Little John takes Marian and exits. Robin is surrounded by the guards and the Prince.

The two of them fight against Robin.Alan-a-Dale arrives.

Alan-a-Dale. I heard your horn, Robin.

Robin Hood. Thank you, my friend.

Alan-a-Dale and Robin fight side by side. Robin injures the guards who run away.

Alan-a-Dale stares at Prince John.

Alan-a-Dale. A run would be good for you also, your Majesty.

The Prince figures out that the forces are unequal. He puts his sword down on the ground.

Prince John. Instead of fighting with me, you fight against me? One day you will pay dearly for that. (He yells.) Retreat! Stop with this farce! I have more important matters to deal with than playing war with you. I shall go. But remember all of you here…! Today you have had your victory, but when I become King, I shall remember this day… and then I shall return to deal with you!

He exits.Screams of victory and applauses of all the people.

Robin Hood and Alan-a-Dale hug.

SCENE 16

The forest.Alan-a-Dale, Robin Hood, Friar Tuck, Will Scarlett e Marian celebrate.

Alan-a-Dale. Our battle is not over yet.

Robin Hood. It will never be over, sir Alan. There shall always be the fight against evil. But now it is time to celebrate victory! A little one, yes, but a very exciting one: at least one injustice has been avoided.

Little John. A costo della mia vita, Robin!

Little John prende in braccio Marian ed esce. Robin è circondato sia dalla giardia che dal Principe.

Combattono in due contro Robin.Arriva Alan-a-Dale.

Alan-a-Dale. Ho udito il tuo corno, Robin.

Robin Hood. Ti ringrazio, amico.

Alan-a-Dale e Robin combattono uno al fianco dell’altro. Robin ferisce la guardia che scappa.

Alan-a-Dale fissa il Principe Giovanni.

Alan-a-Dale. Una bella corsa vi farebbe bene, vostra Maestà.

Il Principe vede che le forze non sono uguali, mette giù la spada.

Principe Giovanni. Invece di lottare con me, lottate contro di me? Un giorno pagherete caro tutto ciò. (Grida.) Ritiratevi! Basta con questa pagliacciata! Mi aspettano affari più importanti che giocare a fare la guerra con voi. Me ne vado. Ma ricordate tutti…! Oggi avete avuto la vostra, ma quando diventerò Re, mi ricorderò di questa giornata… e allora faremo i conti!

Esce.Grida di vittoria e applausi del popolo.

Robin Hood e Alan-a-Dale si abbracciano.

SCENA 16

Foresta.Alan-a-Dale, Robin Hood, Frate Tuck, Will Scarlett e Marian festeggiano.

Alan-a-Dale. La nostra battaglia non è ancora finita.

Robin Hood. Non finirà mai, sir Alan. La lotta contro il male ci sarà sempre. Ma adesso è ora di festeggiare la vittoria! Piccola, sì, ma molto entusiasmante: almeno un’ingiustizia è stata evitata.

Alan-a-Dale. Robin Hood, it breaks my heart to leave you, but I must return to my wife and land. We shall meet again in the future, I promise.

He exits.

Friar Tuck. Oh yes, I love these moments. After a little physical exercise with the sword I have a good appetite.

He eats and drinks.

Robin Hood. My friends, as long as I live I shall fight on the side of good, of justice and of love.

He looks at Marian.

Friar Tuck. What did I say? Robin Hood is a hero! Robin Hood is the King of the poor!

Robin Hood approaches Marian and kisses her.

Guarda Marian.

Frate Tuck. Cos’ ho detto io? Robin Hood è un eroe! Robin Hood è il Re dei poveri!

Robin Hood si avvicina a Marian e la bacia.

Robin Hood. Marian, ti prego accetta di essere mia sposa!

Marian (felice e poi finge di essere seria). Accetto, ma ad una condizione!

Robin Hood. E quale?

Marian (sorride). Che sia il frate Tuck a sposarci!!!

Frate Tuck (imita Marian). Accetto, ma solo ad una condizione!

Robin Hood e Marian. E quale?

Frate Tuck (sorride). Che tutte le mattine si sforni un bel pane caldo!!!

Tutti ridono e si abbracciano.
