Is there a special event happening in your department? Do you know a student who has an interesting hobby, or who has made a significant accomplishment? Are you involved in community outreach? An educational program? A hands-on workshop or training session? Public Affairs wants to know about any and all of these events. There are a variety of ways we can publicize events and accomplishments in the school, but we can’t promote them if we don’t know they’re happening. Though not every event is going to catch the attention of the media, we can still promote your event through one of our social media accounts, our monthly community newsletter or by writing our own feature story for the school’s website. Drop us an email and tell us what’s happening. We’ll share the good news.

The LinkedIn page for KU School of Medicine-Wichita has transitioned from a company page to a higher education page, making it easier for our alumni to add our school to their LinkedIn profiles. Whether you’re one of our alumni, students, residents, faculty members or staff members, we invite you to connect with us on LinkedIn. Show your pride and update your profile to reflect your affiliation with KU School of Medicine-Wichita!

Public Affairs offers a variety of items to support your events. Do you need a logo banner to showcase at your fair booth? We have a few. Are you serving cold drinks at an event and want something sleeker than a cooler? You can borrow one of our stainless steel beverage tubs. Visit our website to check out photos of available items and fill out an event support request form to reserve what you need. New designs of retractable banners and flag banners are available! You can also request an appearance by our energetic and fun Baby Jay. Loved by adults and kids alike, Baby Jay will kick your event up a notch. All Baby Jay appearances must have a direct connection to KUSM-W.

If you’re involved in a study that is recruiting subjects and would like to have our support in creating recruitment materials, submit a request using our online form. You can request flyers, ads, Jayhawk Talk Online listings, broadcast emails, and more. Once we draft the copy, we’ll send it back to you for IRB approval.

by Julia Dhar (14 minutes, 57 seconds) Some days, it feels like the only thing we can agree on is that we can’t agree – on anything.

Drawing on her background as a world debate champion, Julia Dhar offers three techniques to

reshape the way we talk to one other so we can start disagreeing productively and finding

common ground – over family dinners, during work meetings and in our national conversations.

Do you like organizing events? Got a knack for fundraising? Consider serving as leader for KU School of Medicine-Wichita’s United Way campaign this year! It’s a great way to give back to Wichita and build camaraderie within our own KUSM-W community, all while supporting an important cause. Health ICT has partnered with Botanica to offer a Walk at Lunch joint-use agreement to registered worksites, which allows employees to walk through Botanica's beautiful gardens for only $1 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday-Friday. This Walk at Lunch opportunity is available now through Nov. 15. KU School of Medicine-Wichita has registered as a worksite, so this opportunity is open to the campus community, including MPA employees. Simply pay at the front desk and mention that you are there for the Walk at Lunch program and that you are with KU (showing your KU ID badge is ideal but not required). Entry costs are the responsibility of each individual. Additionally, the Garden Cafe at Botanica is offering a 10% discount on menu items to worksite participants during those times. Check out the different walking path maps here!

Recently, the JTO highlighted the 12 KUSM-W faculty who achieved promotion in the 2018-19 cycle. While these faculty are, undoubtedly, the stars of the show, many of our faculty and staff work ‘backstage’ to make our promotion and tenure process happen each year. Here’s a snapshot from the 2018-19 cycle:

• 12 KUSM-W faculty members applied for, and achieved, academic promotion

• 6 KUSM-W faculty members served on the campus Appointments, Promotion and Tenure Committee

• 6 department-level appointments, promotion and tenure committees met to review Wichita applicants. 17 KUSM-W faculty members served on those committees

• 7 KUSM-W department chairs wrote letters of reference for applicants from their departments

• 22 KUSM-W faculty members wrote letters of reference for one or more of their peers

• 6+ KUSM-W staff members assisted applicants As the old adage says, “it takes a village.” If you are counted among those indicated above, thank you for your contribution to this important process!

When someone mentions a hazardous work environment, rarely do we think of an office. But, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 80,000 injuries per year are a result of injuries sustained in an office setting. Slips, trips and falls are the most common causes of office injuries. Other office hazards include poor workstation ergonomics, eyestrain and fire hazards. SLIPS, TRIPS, FALLS Culprits to these risks include unattended spills, wet floors, exposed cords, loose rugs and cluttered areas. Keep office walkways clear of boxes and other clutter. Electrical and telephone cords should also be properly secured and not stretched across aisles or walkways. Clean up all spills immediately, and post signs identifying hazards in that area. ERGONOMICS Most of us spend a lot of time at our computers, increasing our risk of ergonomic strains and other musculoskeletal injuries related to posture and repetitive movements. OSHA offers a free e-tool illustrating general ergonomic guidelines and computer workstation setup. A variety of adjustable chairs, desks, keyboards, etc. are available to accommodate work styles. The Department of Labor also offers free ergonomic assessments. Contact Safety & Emergency Management to schedule an assessment. EYESTRAIN Looking at a computer screen for long periods can cause eyestrain. Eyes may become dry and irritated and focusing may become a challenge. You can cut down on glare by closing blinds and dimming overhead lights. Positioning monitors slightly below eye level and increasing font size can help alleviate eyestrain. OSHA also recommends taking a 10-minute break for every hour you spend looking at a computer screen, and focusing on things at various distances to give your eyes a break. FIRE SAFETY The National Fire Protection Association reports fire departments respond to an average of 17,000 office fires every year in the U.S., resulting in millions of dollars in property damage. Routine office inspections can help reduce this risk. Inspect power cords regularly for wear and tear and contact Facilities Management for frayed or exposed wires on power cords and IT Services for frayed or exposed computer and phone cords. Extension cords are for temporary use only and should be approved by certifying laboratories such as Underwriters Laboratories (look for the UL marking on the cord). Never use cords that have a damaged or removed third prong and do not overload outlets. Plug appliances directly into outlets and, if in doubt on circuit loads, contact Facilities Management. Never place items closer than 18 inches below sprinkler heads and never block emergency fire exit routes. If you use a space heater, make sure you follow campus procedures. Before use, Facilities Management must inspect the safety features on the space heater. Once approved for use, be sure to unplug them when unattended. Safety is everyone’s responsibility. Once you are done reading this article, take a few minutes to look around your office. Correct any safety hazards you find, and if you need assistance contact Safety & Emergency Management at [email protected] or 293-3409.
