VESSEL: THE GUILD OF BOOK WORKERS 2015 - 2017 EXHIBITI

Guild of Book Workers VESSEL exhibition will be traveling to Denver! February 18 – April 12, 2016 University Libraries University of Denver The book as vessel inspires beautiful metaphor - a craft for traveling, a container, a holder, a receiver, a transporter. Across time and culture, the vessel is at the center of many ceremonies and rites of passage. The book as craft is the book worker’s vessel to sail the high seas, to hold dearest memories, and to indicate the pulse of life.

New Mexico Bookbinding classes with Priscilla Spitler in Truth or Consequences, NM

The series starts from the beginning, as soon as January 30, with a focus on sound bookbinding structure. Classes are posted through mid June, possibly to be repeated in the fall (depending on edition workload). http://www.priscillaspitler.com/workshops/ Also, future plans will include a four-day class on planning for edition binding, for those wishing to produce multiple bindings. Visible Stitches - with Bonnie Stahlecker (This is a workshop offered by BAG, the Santa Fe Book Arts Group)

A tutorial on the Long Stitch and the Buttonhole Stitch Book arts Room, Santa Fe Community College Santa Fe, NM

March 12-13, 2016 Time: 9-4, Sat and Sun.

This incredible two-day workshop will focus on two binding styles: the Long Stitch and the Buttonhole Stitch. These stitches are a simple yet attractive method of attaching the book sections to the cover though openings in the spine. Participants will make two books, one of each style. Both books will have a supple leather wrapper with fore-edge flap and closures system.

We will work with reclaimed and new leather in a choice of colors. Participants will learn how to line the leather, create interesting spine embellishments and cut attractive buttonholes. In addition, we will explore ways to decorate paper with stencils and acrylic ink. These papers will show through the buttonhole of the second book.

The books are 6 inches high and 4½ inches wide, a perfect size to stash in your travel bag. And with 120 pages, there is plenty of room to record your thoughts.

Vessel, the Guild of Book Workers’ triennial juried members’ exhibition, features 43 works from book artists and craftspeople from across the country. Inspired by the theme, participants interpret vessel in diverse ways and create some of the finest examples of book arts today. The University of Denver Libraries is one of six venues showcasing these works, which tour the U.S. from October 2015 through March 2017. Check our website/blog later in the month for information about a chapter event during the run of Vessel at DU.  First  Folio!  The  Book  that  Gave  Us  Shakespeare  In 2016, in partnership with Cincinnati Museum Center and the American Library Association, First Folio! The Book that Gave Us Shakespeare will bring the First Folio to all 50 states, Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico. The exhibition, which also includes panels and digital content, exclusively features First Folios from the Folger, whose collection of 82 First Folios is by far the largest in the world. Click on the website to find an interactive map showing states’ exhibit dates and locations.  http://www.folger.edu/first-folio-tour  RMGBW Member Gathering: A group of RMGBW members as well as book fans in the community gathered on December 5 to admire one of the most complete collections of the Kelmscott Press in the country. The viewing was courtesy of Brian Trebnath, Special Collections Librarian at Denver Public Library. They also visited the DPL vault and were impressed with a large antiphonal, among other treasures. The group then hiked down to Abecedarian Gallery, to see the best in contemporary book works. It was a great book-filled afternoon!  Chapter Survey Update: Thank you to all of you who participated in the survey on the topic of splitting our Chapter. We will remain as one for now and work together to make this a great Chapter. The results are available on the blogspot, http://rmcgbw.blogspot.com.

Here is a cool travel site to browse to find suggestions of bookish things to do when you are in a new city: website: http://www.elbel-libro.com, click on “Bookspots”. Tip shared by Lang Ingalls. Please send articles and book related information to me so I can add them to the next newsletter. It’s always interesting to hear what is going on in all the Rocky Mountain regions.
