General Information

After-school activities occur on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays

from 3:15-4:25 pm. Any student not under the direct supervision of an adult must exit the

building by 3:15 pm. After school buses are available most Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and

Thursdays only for students who participate in a school-sponsored activity.

Please note that the number of activity buses that we offer each day varies. That information is listed with the activity bus schedule located later in this booklet and is denoted with either a 2 or 3.

Parents, if you are picking up your student from an activity, please do not park in the bus loop between 4:00-4:35 pm. Please use the parking lot or line up in the car rider lane.

Please review the website or emails to take note of changes to activities or the start of new activities.

Students must have a 2.0 for the previous marking period to be eligible to participate in activities.

Activity/Club Descriptions

Homework Club (By grade levels) The Homework Club is a time for students to focus on their academic studies with the help of staff members. HW club is not a weekly commitment; students are welcome to join us on days that they need a little extra help or a quiet place to study. Students can work collaboratively or they may quietly discuss their work with peers. Quince Orchard HS student tutors from the PEEAR club will be available to assist our students as necessary. Homework Club will meet in the Media Center and students will have access to computers, if needed. Students will need to obtain a pass from a teacher in order to gain access to the media center for HW Club.

Multi-Sport Intramurals Students decide as a group what sports to perform for their activity. Based on the weather, they may play multiple sports outside - Basketball, Soccer, Frisbee, etc. all at one time on the black top behind the school. As the weather turns colder, students may play indoor basketball or soccer in the Aux-Gym or main Gym. If the PE department has volleyball, ping pong, or another unit activity set up and the department gives permission, students may engage in that activity. The students work on a positive competitive spirit, forming teams, and focusing on having fun as the outcome.

Yearbook Yearbook meets weekly to plan and develop the yearbook. Students may be asked to act as a photographer during the day, or attend special events. Students should be dedicated to participate for the year.

Intramural Cheerleading Intramural Cheerleading is a fun non-competitive after school activity for girls and boys. There are no tryout requirements, all students that show up participate. We will perform at several events throughout the school year (not mandatory). Practice consists of a combination of gymnastics, dance and cheer. We will meet every Tuesday. STEM Club

The STEM Club has a primarily Science and Engineering focus where students will work in teams to solve a variety of challenges. Students will get to be innovative in creating their solutions for a variety of real-world problems. Examples from last year include building cars with bumpers and safety constraints tested using an egg and a roller coaster challenge.

Yoga Club Learn yoga poses and breathing strategies that can help improve flexibility, increase strength, release stress, and improve focus. These are skills you can take with you to help with performance and avoiding injury in other sports, as well as focus and stress management skills in school and in daily life. The weekly sessions will include some fun games and activities, as well as some quieter time to experience the calming power of yoga. The Yoga Club is open to students in 6th - 8th grades. Students who are bus riders can take the activity bus home. There is no fee to join. Please email mayhew.shannon@gmail.com for more information.

Math Olympiad The purpose of the middle school math team is to encourage a wide variety of students to strengthen and refine their higher order thinking through team competition. Participation in math team activities often provides students with the inspiration to continue in the study of higher-level mathematics. Math team provides a vehicle for gifted mathematics students to receive recognition for their abilities at the local, state, and national level.

SGA Ridgeview Bobcats!! Now is the time to get involved with your School and Community! Join the Ridgeview Student Government Association to: (1) help promote School Spirit, (2) have a positive effect on our school and Community, (3) celebrate our uniqueness here at Ridgeview and (4) get involved in student concerns here at school and county-wide.

Intramural Soccer Anyone for Fútbol!!! If you like to watch soccer or want to get and play soccer come Wednesdays for Fun and enjoyment!!! It will be held every Wednesday after school. We will start in Mr. DiMarco's room 204 and go out and play!!!!

German Club If you are interested in learning different languages, or are interested in the culture, history, or traditions of Germany, German Club is the club for you! Starting on October 3rd, German Club will be hosted each week by Ms. Hazen in Room 215. We will meet there after school on Thursdays. German Club will be a place to learn some of the German language, explore its rich history and traditions, and maybe even eat German snacks! There is no fee to join. Beautification Club Beautification Club is for students who want to bring kindness and positivity into our school in an artful way. We will be designing and painting messages of kindness and beautification around the school in a mural/graffiti style.

Science Bowl Science Bowl is a nationwide academic competition sponsored by the U.S Department of Energy (DOE) which tests students’ knowledge in all areas of science and mathematics. Teams comprised of four students and one alternate will compete in regional competitions in the spring. Winning teams have the possibility of continuing to the national competition. The first regional competition will be on March 7th 2020 at Prince George’s community college. Students will need to arrange their own transportation to the competition. During the after-school activity students will practice with questions, may need to create a knowledge base in some subjects and will participate in mock competitions with sample questions. Students will need to qualify for the team. This process will be explained at the first meeting on Wednesday November 20th in Room 102

Jazz Ensemble Come and jam with the RMS jazz ensemble! This group is open to anyone who plays a jazz instrument including drums, piano, guitar, and bass. We will perform at a variety of Ridgeview functions as well as our winter and spring concerts. Please see Mr. Proszkow in room 201 near the cafeteria for more information!

Welcome to the 2019-2020 Ridgeview Intramural Sports Program, which gives students a great opportunity to socialize, exercise, and capitalize on a physical structured activity program! Intramural sports are open to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. 6th graders are not eligible for Middle School Sports Teams, but they are encouraged to do intramural sports. There are no tryouts. A willingness to engage in fair competition is the only requirement.

Intramural Parent Permission Form 2019-2020

This program will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3:15 pm to 4:25 pm. The activity buses will depart promptly at 4:30 pm. It will be the parents’ responsibility to arrange transportation for a student who misses their activity bus. Intramural sports will only be held when activity buses are available. If activity buses are not running due to weather or scheduling, intramural activities are cancelled. Failure to pick up students on time will result in his/her elimination from the program.
