SECTION I – DIAGRAMS AND SCHEMATICS
A. Wiring Diagrams
1. The connection diagram shall consist of a proportional panel or box outline and shall show the general physical
Layout of the panel or box mounted components.
2. Each component shall be represented by an enclosure as shown in Section II. Each enclosure shall depict the shape
Connections of the component when possible.
3. Each component must have the same code as on the schematic.
4. Any unused terminals or contacts shall be shown.
5. All wiring must be identified by either color code or number.
B. Wiring Schematics
1. Standard electrical symbols for all electrical components shall be used in accordance with Section IV.
2. The symbols for all components shall be identified by an abbreviated term or term number combination in accordance
with Section III.
3. The symbols and terms of Section IV are maintained within the CAD system menu. If they are determined to be
Inadequate, changes or additions may be made with the approval of the engineering managers. Use Form CAD 102.
4. The schematic shall show the internal circuiting of all electrical components in the control system with the exception
of solid state components.
5. The schematic shall be drawn with vertical line representing the source of control power and all control devices shall
be between these lines.
6. All motors, coils, etc. shall be shown on the right hand side of the schematic when possible.
7. The position of the symbols shall be arranged for clarity and need not indicate their physical location in relation to

8. The correct symbol shall be used to show each control on the equipment in its actual state of being energized or
de-energized, which ever the case might be, with the main switch (power supply) de-energized.
9. If the switch or coil terminals of a device are numbered, these numbers shall appear on the schematic.
10. As a general rule, wiring should not be identified by color code or number. An exception to this would be
shematics of wiring diagrams of units with a large quantity of wires, for example commercial units. In this case,
schematic wire identification is necessary to aid in tracing wiring.

Scope
This section establishes the practices for use in preparing engineering drawings. Functional/simplified drafting is a
technique where drawings are developed with the functional use being the primary driver. Today, more than ever
before, the challenge of industry is to produce more and better goods with less effort. The quest is to keep prices
competitive so that the company can not only maintain but continue to gain additional market share and profit.
This means that the drawing information must be clear and concise, without artistic rendering, unnecessary details,
and superfluous (redundant, excessive, needless, extravagant) information. Unnecessary data on drawings adds to
the cost of design development, detracts from a design and potentially adds complexity to the interpretation,
revision and record retention of the drawing. Functional/simplified drafting was introduced to increase drawing
production without losing the fit, form, or function of the depicted design. The idea is to reduce unnecessary
information that does not reduce the user's ability to interpret the drawing. High quality drawings are needed by
users to perform their work, e.g., procurement, fabrication, and quality inspection.

Views Presentation
All drawings that will be released from Research and Development will be completed on an ‘A’ size (8.5 X 11)
sheet format.
All drawings shall be produced using the "third angle orthographic projection" system. The third angle system is
preferred as the American standard because the views are the same as those obtained by observing the object from
the front, top, side, or rear. An isometric view may be utilized on complex drawings for clarification. A minimum
number of views, necessary to completely describe the object, shall be used.
Sectional views shall be placed as close as practical behind the arrows, showing the shape and construction of the
object at the cutting plane.
If it becomes necessary to rotate a sectional view, the degree of rotation and direction are specified.
A sectional view must be identified by its title consisting of the full word SECTION followed by the pair of letters;
for example, SECTION A-A, SECTION B-B, etc. Avoid use of letters I, O, Q, S, X, Y and Z for sectional views.
Lettering shall be upper case and bold.
Detail views shall be shown in the same plane and in the same arrangement as in the principal view. A detail view
must be identified by its title consisting of the full word DETAIL followed by a letter; for example, DETAIL A.
Avoid use of letters I, O, Q, S, X, Y and Z for detail views. Lettering shall be upper case and bold. The optional
view scale is specified directly below the view.
If there is a Section A-A and a view, the view would have a different letter, (View B-B).
Standard text fonts will be utilized on all drawings.

Revision Indicators
The revision indicator will be in either the form of:
(1) Two digits used on all non-tabulated drawings and specifications.
(2) One letter used on tabulated drawings. It should be noted that in all cases all letters of the alphabet can be
used with the exception of “I” and “O”. On tabulated drawings, the letter indicates a general revision that is
common to all parts or assemblies specified. In this case, no change in revision number is indicated in the
actual table on the drawing.
(3) A combination of: one letter in the title block and corresponding letter with two digits (i.e., a/01) in the
table. The letter in the title block indicates a revision to the drawing. The combination of letter and two digits
in the table denotes a specific revision to that individual part or assembly designated by a complete part
number. The revision number should change only on those individual part numbers that are affected by the
revision.
Note that whatever digit or letter that is shown in the title block revision number space must also be
shown equally in the revision explanation block.
Product model index sheets (ADS-5100-‘s) must show a revision number in the title block and a revision
number in the column provided on the left side of the sheet next to the item that was revised.
Two or more separate sheets with the same complete part number that constitute a complete drawing,
such as an assembly or fabricated part, must have the same revision explanation blocks. For example, if
there are three sheets under the same complete part number and only one sheet is revised, the other
two sheets should show the same revision indicator with a reference in the revision explanation block to
the revised sheet, such as “no change this sheet, revision number changed to agree with sheet x”.
Exceptions to this rule can be made where inconsistent revision indicators on separate sheets of a drawing
would not have an effect on the purpose of the drawing. Examples of this would be: 1) tabulated drawings
consisting of numerous individual parts used in various places; 2) ADS- specifications such as rating plate data
and production or testing procedures.
Locating Revision on the Drawing - When redrawing or revising an original drawing, the actual locations of the
revision should be identified by placing revision symbols as close to the change as possible.

Revision Indicators
The Revision Symbol - A revision symbol is a triangle containing the revision number. NOTE: As revisions are
removed from the history block, the corresponding revision triangles should be removed also.
Revision History Block - The Revision History block is intended for recording and organizing textual descriptions
of the revisions being made to the drawing. It will include the revision number, a description of the change(s),
initial of the change, the date of the revision, and the change notice release number.

Minor Changes - When minor changes such as correction of misspelled words are required, the revision block will
be designated with a dash ( “—“) and noted as “corrected spelling, no change to part” and released on change
notice.
Parts Redrawn Without Changes - The replacement drawing must duplicate the exact requirements and
specifications of the original. Put your name and the “original” release date in the MODELED_BY and
DATE_MODELED parameters and the original change notice number from the part that is being redrawn. Place a
“-----“ in the revision and “REDRAWN ON PRO/E – NO CHANGE TO PART” in the description of the Revision
History box along with the initials of the individual redrawing the part, the date of the redraw, and change notice
release number. Be sure to include the last revision shown from the part being redrawn and the correct revision
triangles (if applicable).

When Changes Require New Drawing and Part Number
When considering a change to a drawing of an existing part or assembly, the following criteria should be applied to
determine whether an existing drawing can be modified or a new drawing must be prepared and assigned a new
drawing identity. On an existing detail or assembly drawing that can be tabulated, the same consideration would
apply regarding assignment of a new part, group, or dash suffix.
A new drawing must be prepared when performance or durability is affected to such an extent that items must be
superseded for reasons of safety or malfunction.
A new drawing must be prepared when parts, subassemblies, or complete articles are changed to such an extent that
the superseding items are not interchangeable with previous items.
A new drawing must be prepared when replaced items are limited to use in specific articles or models while the
superseding parts are not limited.
A new drawing must be prepared when changes affect interchangeable, repairable assemblies that contain non-
interchangeable parts.

General Rules
Only truly critical dimensions should be highlighted as such. Placing excessively high tolerances and redundant
dimensions can dramatically increase the cost of a part.
When a bend is made too close to a hole, the hole may become deformed. It is recommended that the edge of a
hole be no closer to the tangent of the bend than 3 times the material thickness.
The distance from the edge of a hole to the edge of the material should be at least two times the material thickness.
The minimum height of a flange is two and a half times the material thickness without requiring additional
operations.
The standard inside bend radius is the material thickness.
Where practicable, the finished part should be defined without specifying the manufacturing method. Thus, only the
diameter of a hole is given without specifying how it is to be produced.
Features should not be dimensioned from a raw edge if possible.
Flanges should be run-out when possible and should be shown as reference ( ) dimensions.

Compressor Codes will no longer be assigned on the Compressor Assembly sheet. A Compressor Code assignment sheet has been set up. This sheet can be found at “O:\New Part Number Assignment\COMPCODE.DOC” or click on the hyperlink to go straight to the file. Once you have filled out all of the fields on the assignment sheet go to the appropriate Compressor Assembly drawing and add your Compressor Code, Model number, Compressor part number, Vendor, Initials and the date. All Compressor Code sheets have been placed in the Data Management Software System. If the compressor code you have assigned needs to be added to an existing drawing, check the drawing out. If you need to create a new Compressor Assembly sheet, a template file has been created, “compcode.dot”. Go into Word and click File, New, click on My Computer, then select Drwg Bdr tab and select “compcode.dot” template file. The naming convention for the Compressor Assembly sheet should be “AS-“XXXXX”-.doc. The “XXXXX” in the file name should be the first Compressor Code on that particular sheet. Import the file into the Data Management Software System, (refer to DDS-?? for Importing Non-Cad Documents). Under no circumstances should anyone copy or recreate any file that is stored in the Data Management Software System. If you are unable to update a file, ask for assistance.

Scope
This section is to establish rules and guidelines for dimensioning and tolerancing and is intended to establish uniform practices for specifying and interpreting design requirements. All dimensions need a tolerance because it is not possible to make a perfect part. To ensure that a design can be fabricated, it is necessary to permit variation on all dimensions. The allowable amount of fabrication error (tolerance) specified on a drawing is normally based on functional requirements. The achievable level of manufacturing accuracy is determined by factors such as process capability. Care should be taken to avoid specifying tolerances that are unnecessarily small.

Dimensioning and Tolerancing
General Dimensioning Rules
Dimensioning of parts must convey enough information to define clearly the engineering intent, so that no scaling of drawings is required, nor any assumptions need to be made. See Section 7.0 – Drawings for expanded dimensioning guidelines and examples.
All drawings shall use the inch as the unit of measurement.
Each dimension must be expressed clearly so that it will be interpreted only one way. No fractional dimensions are to be used; the only accepted practice is decimal dimensioning. Zeros are not used before the decimal but may be added to the right side of the decimal where necessary so that a dimension can be expressed to the same decimal place as its tolerance.
No surface, line, or point may be located by more than one toleranced dimension in any one direction. If a dimension is repeated, it is marked REF.
Dimensions shall be selected and arranged to avoid accumulation of tolerances.
Dimensions are shown on the view that most clearly represents the form of the feature being dimensioned.
Dimensions are shown outside the outline of the part unless clarity is impaired.
Dimensioning to hidden lines shall be avoided.
Dimensions must be selected to give the required information directly so that minimal or no calculations are needed to arrive at usable figures.
Where practicable, the finished part should be defined without specifying the manufacturing method. Thus, only the diameter of a hole is given without specifying how it is to be produced.
Dimensions out of scale shall be avoided.

General Dimensioning Rules
Baseline dimensioning is the preferred method of choice. Wherever possible, all dimensions are to refer to a common reference line (000). The .000 baseline should not be on a raw edge if possible. This method will keep the tolerance accumulation to a minimum. Baseline dimensioning is the only dimensioning method where the dimensions can be rotated and read from the right hand side of the drawing. All other types of dimensioning must be read from the bottom of the drawing.
Dimensioning to groups of mounting holes should be with center line to one of the holes and then any holes related will be located from that hole using leader dimensions.
When unidirectional dimensioning is to be used, all dimensions and notes should be aligned with the bottom of the drawing.
Angles not defined will be 90° with standard tolerance as noted in title box.
All dimensions shall be decimal values. The use of fractions is to be avoided. The exception is in the identifier for thread sizes, both fraction and decimal values are acceptable.
All dimensions are applicable at 68° Fahrenheit. Compensation may be made at other temperatures.
Normal dimensioning of angles is in the direction that the material moved.

Tolerancing
Dimensional tolerances may be expressed as follows:
Title Block Tolerancing - The tolerances are specified in the title block and depend on the number of decimal places used in the basic dimension.
Limit Tolerancing - The high (maximum) value of a dimension is placed above the low (minimum) value.
Plus and Minus Tolerancing - The basic dimension is followed by plus and minus tolerance values.
Geometric Tolerancing - The tolerances are defined by means of a Feature Control Frame which specifies dimensional limits for an individual geometric feature such as location, orientation, form, profile and runout. The Feature Control Frame is divided into several compartments containing (1) geometric characteristic symbol (which is, when applicable, preceded by a diameter symbol), and (3) datum references as needed. This type of tolerancing is for critical components and should be utilized sparingly.
Angle Units - Fractional degrees should be shown using decimal degrees.
Tolerance Accumulation – Parts should be dimensioned so that the accumulation of tolerances does not affect the overall fit, form, and function of the part itself.
Reference Dimensions - A reference dimension is a dimension enclosed in parentheses. It provides auxiliary information that may be helpful in understanding the design requirements and is not considered part of the drawing requirements, and therefore no tolerance is applicable. A reference dimension is generally a repeat of a dimension derived from other values shown on the drawing or on related drawings.

Tolerances shall be assigned, directly or as default values, to all dimensions in a drawing.
Title block default tolerances shall be used whenever feasible or modified for the drawing requirements.
Tolerances shall be specified to meet actual design requirements. Do not use restrictive tolerances simply because they can be easily generated on a CAD station.
Bilateral tolerances should be selected instead of unilateral tolerances when plus and minus tolerancing is used. Preference should be given to equal plus and minus values.
Tolerances shall have the same number of decimal places as the base dimensions, and have the same character height as the dimensions.

A. NEW I & O’s and WARRANTIES
1. Installation manuals/Warranties required for any product will be prepared by the Publications Specialist in collaboration with the Project Engineer. The rough draft data, with sketches, illustrations, etc. must be made available to the Publications Specialist no later than at the time of the preliminary release.
2. If photographs of product components, or the product, are required for the instructions, it will
be the responsibility of the Project Engineer to make the components and/or the product available to the Publications Specialist. The Publications Specialist will be responsible for having the photographs taken and made available for the Printer.
3. The Project Engineer and the Publications Specialist will establish a date on which the
preliminary print ready proof must be made available by pre-pilot. The Publications Specialist and the Project Draftsman will be responsible for assigning the Literature Information Sheet part number.
