RGS Newsletter Friday, 21 February 2020 © The Rockhampton Grammar School, Term 1 2020 From the Headmaster Success is an outcome of dedication and teamwork. Our School has many reasons to be proud of our students’ efforts in many facets of their studies and co-curricular activities. Just this weekend it was an honour to see last year’s Dux of the School, James Vandeleur being announced as the top student in Queensland for 2019. The whole school is very proud of James not only with his studies and commitment to our School, but also because he is a person of great character as well as scholarship. This award is also recognition of the great culture of learning and the relationship of students, teachers and parents at RGS. The Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) also on the weekend released the annual Outcomes data for 2019. Again, RGS produced impressive results in this report, both in the local education sector and against schools across Queensland. The depth of success highlights how our School benefits all our students, not just those at the top end of academic results. RGS is also not an academic selective school. Importantly, in 2019 as with many years previous, we also produced strong results in the Vocational Education sector when many graduates have started their working careers. As impressive as these results are, we are also proud about the type of people that exit RGS. Their character and values are equally as important. We want good scholars, but we also need excellent people. Next Tuesday it will be an honour to present leadership positions to the RGS Class of 2020 at the School’s Foundation Day and Induction of School Officers Ceremony. It will also be an honour to welcome our special guest, the Governor of Queensland, His Excellency the Honourable Paul de Jersey AC. Once again we look forward to working together as a team to help produce the best possible outcomes for all our students. Sixty-six students registered for five amazing days of workshops working with four industry professionals from Sydney in various dance genres. Sally Hare (Musical Theatre), Thomas Egan (Rhythm Tap), Neale Whittaker (Hip Hop) and Aimee Whittaker (Contemporary) worked with the students throughout the week learning various moves in these genres culminating in a Showcase concert on the last day. This year also saw the introduction of a Junior Summer School Programme for students aged 6-7 years of age who attended a short amount of time each day as an introduction to what Summer Schools are like. The students from all over Central Queensland, enjoyed dancing with students from other academies, not only sharing their love of dance but also creating lasting friendships. Families of the dancers also enjoyed socialising at the Summer School’s pool party held towards the end of the week. Feedback from the guest tutors, parents and students rate the Summer School as excellent value for money and a very professional, well-run event. The RGS Dance Council is now looking forward to planning for the 2021 aDvANCE Summer School.

Head of Secondary School - Academics and Students

2019 Outcomes data released You may know that the Overall Position (OP) ranking system, which concluded last year, was first introduced in Queensland in 1992. Over the weekend the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) released all Year 12, 2019 Outcomes data for Queensland’s schools. This data includes OP, vocational education and training (VET) and Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) data.

As part of this data release, the QCAA Academic Achievement Awards were announced in Brisbane on Saturday. One of our 2019 graduates, Mr James Vandeleur, was announced as the top academic achiever for Queensland. This means that he achieved the best QCE results by all Queensland 2019 graduates (of which there were nearly 38,000)!! This outstanding achievement by James is highlighted on the front page of today’s Morning Bulletin. Well done to James and his family on this amazing achievement!!

The School’s motto, Macte Virtute et Litteris (Grow in character and scholarship) highlights the fact that a Grammar education extends well beyond that of an OP, QCE or VET qualification. All educators, from the initial journey which commences at the School’s Early Learning Centre (ELC) to the Primary School, and finally the Secondary School, contributes to every student realising the value of an education and developing a passion for the wonder of learning and discovery. While such academic data can be measured, the School’s commitment to ensuring Grammar students realise the significance of contributing to the community and exemplifying this via their actions is not so easily quantified.

Later this week I will be sending a summary of the School’s Year 12, 2019 Outcomes data for you to review. It is clear The Rockhampton Grammar School 2019 graduates have achieved exceptionally well across all three academic areas (OP, VET and QCE). That requires a solid relationship by all stakeholders and I encourage you to contact me if you have any questions.

Student Mobile Phone Policy Update The School recognises that, when used appropriately, mobile phones offer students and their parent’s advantages in terms of ease of communication and a sense of personal safety. However, inappropriate use may have a negative impact on the learning environment and well-being of students. A review of the Mobile Phone Policy resulted in the School deciding the use of mobile phones, IPods and similar devices such as cameras, are not required during the school day. All students in the Secondary School are now required to turn these items off and place them out of sight on arrival at school. Items may be turned on again as the students depart at the end of the school day. The device should be stored securely in a student’s locker if they are a day student in the Secondary School, in a student’s locked cupboard if they are a boarder. Whilst on School grounds, phones must be off and out of sight between the times of 7:50 am and 3:50 pm on school days. In addition, boarding students are not to use their mobile phones, IPods and similar devices such as cameras outside the dormitories between the hours of 7:50 am and 3:50 pm on school days. Non-observance or breaches of the rules will result in the mobile phone/device being confiscated, parents notified, and the following process followed.

• First offence – the mobile phone/device confiscated and securely stored for a period of three (3) days term time.

• Second offence – the mobile phone/device confiscated and securely stored for a period of one (1) week term time. The student and parents/guardians or boarding staff will be required to organize a meeting to collect the mobile phone/device. The student and parent will be required to sign a ‘Second Offence’ contract ensuring they understand the next confiscation will result in the mobile phone/device being confiscated for a period of ten (10) weeks term time.

• Third offence – the mobile phone/device confiscated and securely stored for a period of ten (10) weeks term time.

Year 7 Ritamada The Year 7 day trip to Ritamada was made very special by the contributions of our wonderful Form Teachers and Form Seniors. After a tour of Ritamada, the Year 7’s enjoyed a day of both structured group activities and relaxed play. It is always wonderful to share in the beauty of Ritamada with Mr Damien Boicos and Ms Sam Price Rees. It was a great day to watch the Year 7 team make new friendships and strengthen old ones. The students are now looking forward to their next trip to Ritamada in Terms 2 and 3 when they will attend their form camps.

Co-Curricular Expo A huge thank you to Mr Todd Wells, Director of Co-curricular and his team of Staff and students who co-ordinate each of our sports and activities, and the wonderful displays set up for our Year 7’s to experience.

RGS Newsletter Friday, 21 February 2020 www.rgs.qld.edu.au

This afternoon is always a highlight for our new students as they are able to fully see and, in some cases, experience what our rich co-curricular programme has to offer. The students have been talking about the sports they will play and the activities they will join as the excitement about high school continues to fill the Birkbeck building.

Homework It is to be expected at this time of year for new students making the transition to secondary school to experience some ups and downs while they establish the routine of homework. Experience tells us that this will settle down and students will soon settle into a routine. In tutorial over the last two weeks we began using the assessment schedule, found on Parent Lounge, to transfer the relevant assessment items for each class into diaries. The students found this a really worthwhile task. I ask that you take the time to look in their diaries at this exercise. You may also like to print the assessment schedule and highlight the relevant assessments together with your child and keep this on the fridge or study board at home. Year 7 Immunisations Thank you to those parents who have returned the Immunisations forms directly to the Health Centre. Please ensure your forms are in and correct. All immunisations will be given during the tutorial period led by Mrs Rundle. This ensures the students are not missing curriculum based work and the nurses are only attending to one class at a time making for a smoother and calmer process. The date for our first Clinics is now set: Term 1 – Week 6 Please, if you have any questions contact the Health Centre.

Year 8

The past two weeks have been a busy time for all Year 8 students. Classes are well underway and assessment items are already being issued. Students attended a very worthwhile presentation by an organisation called Elevate with the topic being “Junior Time Management”. The process outlined in this presentation will be followed up by Form Teachers. Students also went through the Year 8 Regulations and Expectations document and this document can be found on Parent Lounge. This week students were asked to complete an anonymous survey about Leadership. This survey was developed for RGS by the Centre for Creative Leadership. The data from this survey will form the basis for some activities on Student Leadership which will be covered later in the year. The Writing Boost programme has continued with students being asked to write for 10 minutes a day about what they have learnt. This programme allows students to develop skills in writing including sentence structure, grammar, spelling and punctuation. I am very proud of the way the Year 8s have commenced the year.

Year 9

The year 2020 is well underway and the first couple of weeks have been exceptionally busy. All classes are functioning well and in some cases assessment tasks have begun. Students recently attended a workshop on Time Management with ‘Elevate’, an organisation that specialises in working with students on issues that impact student learning. The students were given some invaluable information on the importance of time management and how to structure their weekly time available around the needs of study, social interaction and co-curricular. In the coming weeks all Year 9 students will be committing to developing their own timetable and I encourage all parents and caregivers to spend some time in discussion with the students about what their plans look like. The Year 9 students have also completed an online survey this week from the Centre of Creative Leadership. This survey is being completed by all students in the school

Page 7: RGS Newsletter...RGS Newsletter Friday, 21 February 2020 RGS News Meet the Teachers Function Parents of students in Years 7 to 12 are invited to join teachers in an informal gathering

RGS Newsletter Friday, 21 February 2020 www.rgs.qld.edu.au

from Year 5 and the results will be used to formulate plans around future leadership directions and programmes. Tutorial time this week has centred around the needs of humans and how our emotional needs drive our behaviour. This will continue into next week. I am pleased with the way that the students in Year 9 have started the year and look forward to creating a positive relationship with every individual in the cohort.

Year 10

Students are reminded to ensure that time tables and assessment schedules are copied into school diaries this week. Similarly, students are reminded that a strict mobile phone policy is in place for school hours. Research has indicated that devices have a negative effect on learning, hence there is no need for any device during school time. Subject change allowances concluded last Friday. The Round Square International Conference 2020 in Scotch Oakburn College, Launceston, from 18 - 23 September. The Conference is filling fast with only 5 student places available. If you are interested, please email me at [email protected] Year 10 Immunisations Thank you to those parents who have returned the Immunisations forms directly to the Health Centre. Please ensure your forms are in and correct. All immunisations will be given in form classes. The dates and times for the clinics are not set.

Year 11

It’s been a big two weeks with students re-assessing their subject choices to ensure they align with what they enjoy, are good at and their post-school goals. Students are now settling into classes and learning what is expected from them academically across Years 11 and 12. Last week we welcomed back into school life Connor, Bruce, Will, Jack and Geordie. I commend these boys on how well they managed their

period of time away from normal school life and we are overjoyed to see them back in classes again. The two Elevate workshops on Time Management and Study Skills gave students invaluable skills towards managing their studies and I was incredibly impressed with the engagement and enthusiasm the cohort showed at these sessions. Now, with the beginning of week four, assessment items are getting underway across most subjects so a focus on how to study effectively and manage their time are certainly key skills that will be required by students for success.

Year 12

Over the course of the past two weeks the Year 12’s have been busy on all fronts. The Valentine’s Day fundraiser was, as always, a resounding success, raising over $800. The Formal Committee ably supported this initiative and raised over $450 dollars with a sausage sizzle at morning tea. What was most pleasing to see was the togetherness of the group and support offered by the whole cohort. This week in Curriculum Preparation, the school psychologists visited the Year 12 group to proactively explore stress management techniques and tackling procrastination in order to prepare for the upcoming exams. This was complimented with a work-life balance session delivered by Mr Stephen Brady. Both sessions were well received and provided practical strategies for our students. Foundation Day and Leadership Induction Ceremony The Year 12’s will be inducted into their 2020 leadership roles on Tuesday 25 February. The ceremony will be held in the Duggan Hall beginning at 11:10 am. Parents and family members of our Year 12 students are invited to attend the ceremony. Reserved seating is available by contacting Miss Megan Thomasson on 49360 625 or [email protected]. Morning tea will be available in the MAH following the ceremony. Formal Preparations are well underway for this year’s walkthrough and formal. The student committee have been busily finalising preparations for Friday 28 February. Walkthrough guest wrist bands will be available for collection from the Secondary School Office from Monday 24 February. Each Year 12 student must collect their envelope of wrist band and distribute them to their guests. Guests without wrist bands will not be permitted on School grounds.
