Two Separate Organizations Support Discovery Ridge

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD

Support Local BusinessesThe Board strongly encourages all residents to help sup-port our Discovery Ridge businesses. These businesses increase our property values and provide the conve-nience of saving time and money having to drive out of the community for services. Many of these businesses support our community events through sponsorship and/or donations in kind. In late July, three businesses in Cornerstone Square experienced an unexpected loss of business for one month due to a water line backup. The affected businesses were Soular Child Montessori Development Centre, Javino Coffee and Wine Bar and Maharajah East India Cuisine. Fortunately, all these businesses are back up and running. Unfortunately, at the end of June, Heart and Mind Yoga closed its doors permanently. On a positive note we have a new busi-ness joining the community – Discovery Massage and

Wellness! We encourage residents to support local busi-nesses to keep Discovery Ridge a vibrant and desirable community into the future.

DRCA Membership ContestFor residents that purchase or renew their membership by October 31st they will be entered into a draw for 4 movie tickets. For only $25 per household, residents get the benefit of discounts at community events, receive DRCA emails, have a collective voice with the City of Calgary and with the Province (since they look at mem-bership rates as the measurement of our strength as a collective voice) regarding matters such as the Ring Road, Griffith Woods, traffic and crime.

Please purchase your membership online at www.discoveryridge.com/membership/.

Tennis in Discovery Ridge is about getting to know our neighbours in addition to playing tennis. September 4, we had our social, and we were able to enjoy a beautiful evening out on the deck. What could be better than to wander in and out to check the score and see Bianca Andreescu make it to the finals.

We gave out cans of tennis balls to our players who had played at least three games, had some prizes for our top

players, Ben, Ramona, and Tom. There was also a prize given to Dwayne who really took getting to know oth-ers to heart and played an amazing number of players in our group. Calgary Tennis Academy donated two les-sons for doubles tennis which Yadira won.

Thanks to everyone for making our tennis season enjoy-able in between the many bouts of rain. We look forward to getting a few more games in before the season ends.

We seem to be lucky with the weather for this event every year and 2019 was no exception. A beautiful warm afternoon made for a great day of music, fam-ily, friends and food in our own Discovery Ridge park. More than 1300 residents and their friends came out to enjoy the musical stylings of The Razzama Jazz Big Band, The Torchettes, (little) fan favourites The Hee-bee-Jeebees and our rockin’ 2019 headliner, The Mike Mackenzie Band.

So many thanks to those who come out and volun-teer for our community events—we could NOT do it without you lovely people. A round of applause please! (side note: if you’d like to volunteer, we’d be happy to have you!)

We’d also like to thank the local businesses who make this event possible. Even a small donation is helpful in making our community a vibrant place to live. Thank you to our local RE/MAX Realtor David Pellettier, The Calgary Stampede for allowing us to use their stage, Craig Johnson Music for bringing us a jammin’ lineup of music and to Brewsters for the sips. Special thanks to our local sponsors; Prestige Dance Academy, Discovery Dental Centre, New Dis-covery Fine Wines and Spirits, Discovery Massage & Wellness (now open!) and VIVE Rejuvenation. Our lo-cal MLA for Calgary West, Mike Ellis, also deserves a big thank you for his support. You all rock!

What Does the DRCA Use the Revenue from the Bottle Shack for?The Bottle Shack has proved to be a great investment for our community. The money made from these resident donations help directly with our operating costs. This includes special event expenses, insurance, web hosting fees, annual audit, bank charges, AGM expenses, and park operating costs (water, electricity, equipment) along with other day-to-day items.

Please Donate to the Bottle Shack!Safely tie/tape shut all bags/boxes to keep our volun-teers safe.

If you’re able to volunteer 15 minutes every month or so, email [email protected] to help empty out the shack with our speedy crew!

Thank you for tying your bags and taping your boxes shut, this keeps our volunteers safe and happy! Pro-ceeds from the bottle shack continue to help support our recreational facilities.

THE WEDGEWOODS CORNER

The past month for most of us at The Wedgewoods has been packed full of end of summer busyness and activities!

Music in the Park was a grand event and many of The Wedgewoods resi-The Wedgewoods resi-resi-dents happily spent their day at the park enjoying the music and com-munity ‘spirits’. The residents work hard to support the Community As-sociations activities, we have a DRCA board member and a DRCA Special Events Committee member that live here and provide steady encourage-ment to all of us to stay active in the community.

We have an ongoing commitment to help out within our communities and typically run a Calgary Food Bank food drive at The Wedgewoods three or four times throughout the year. The most recent drive was held in conjunction with our annual barbe-cue and with the continued support and generosity of our residents we topped the scales with 710 lb. / 323 kg. of food. The challenge is to raise that bar for the next food drive.

The Wedgewoods 2019 Annual BBQ was a wonderful event as well! We welcomed Fire Station 33 truck and crew, the Communications Team EMS truck and crew, Ward 6 Councillor

Jeff Davison and Constituency Liai-son Suzy Trottier. Each guest partici-pated in much of the fun, including face painting. We had an old fashion popcorn cart serving hot buttered popcorn. Some of our Discovery Ridge local businesses and vendors were with us: JAVINO, serving a splen-did array of homemade desserts and their signature coffee; BBQs by Mike on the grill with burgers and hotdogs, serving up 350 hot meals; Liz from Funny Faces Children's Face Painting had as much fun as we did including the face painting of the kids, fun lov-ing adults and everybody on the fire department crew. Craig from Craig Johnson Music was there to provide the best playlist ever! We had 375-400 singing, dancing, clapping, laughing, happy folks. It was a great day!

Now that we are moving into the fall things will be less busy, but life will not stand still at The Wedgewoods. We've already started planning Story Time for the young readers in our families, fall landscaping is being talked about followed by Christmas planning. We have a very active so-cial community here and we know life will continue to be good if we are good to each other.

HOMEOWNERS’ ASSOCIATION (NDHA) NEWS

474 Accounts In Arrears! The only news we will be writing about this month is the potential need to cut back services until outstanding NDHA dues are paid. As of mid September, 474 (almost 30%) of homeowners are delinquent with their 2019 fee, which was due on June 29th. This equates to more than $145,000 in missing revenue and is five times what is ‘normal’ for this time of year.

As a visual, go open your front door and look to your neighbor on the right, then the left. One of the three of you probably hasn’t paid their bill, yet is benefitting from the services paid for by the other two. Is that fair? We think not! Immediate payment is required.

The NDHA invoiced homeowners for the 2019 fee back in February. The amount owing is $307. This year, the treasurer was directed to EMAIL the invoices if possible. If we don’t have your email address on file, then we sent your invoice via Canada Post as per previous years. Resi-dents were also made aware that fees were due via sig-nage at the entrance to the community in June and July.

Please keep in mind that this is an encumbrance on your land title and therefore you are legally bound to pay these fees annually. The NDHA has a strict policy for the collection of unpaid fees. Past due payments are charged interest at a rate of 18% per annum plus ad-ministration fees, in compliance with the terms of the NDHA’s Encumbrance.

Accounts in arrears will be turned over the NDHA lawyer for collection. Any and all legal costs incurred by the NDHA to recover the outstanding balances be-come the responsibility of the homeowner. Failure to

pay outstanding balances and legal costs may ultimate-ly lead to foreclosure proceedings being commenced in respect of the homeowner's property. Please don’t force us to take this path.

Our community relies on everyone to pay their fee on time so that we can pay our contractors. Snow clearing of pathways, fall clean-up, holiday lights and holiday planters all rely on us being able to pay the associated bills. These activities could all be in jeopardy and will profoundly impact the quality of life in the community.

Payment options can be found on our website at ndha.ca. You may contact the Treasurer at [email protected] if you are unsure of your payment status; please reference your address. Thank you to all who have paid for 2019, we appreciate it!

We are always happy to hear from our NDHA members; if you ever have a concern or comment and need to con-tact us please access our website at ndha.ca to send an email or call us at 403-237-9595.

•Concentrated Corridors. There are multiple con-centrated arrival and departure flight paths over our communities. The corridor above Sarcee Trail is one of the busiest for air traffic.•High Volume Flight Paths. There are several busy

east-west paths which impact communities west of Sarcee Trail. These flight paths often intersect the Sarcee Corridor.•Volume. There are, on average, 100 aircraft flying

over us every day. This number can rise to 150+ planes per day over some communities.

Safety in Discovery RidgeUnfortunately, our community has been the target of van-dals and illegal activity in Griffith Woods, the Bottle Shack, and the near the Recreation Facilities.

Griffith Woods is a prized possession for our community and the City of Calgary. As such, we must all do our part to en-sure it remains a family-oriented and safe area. In past years, the summer and fall months have bought increasingly high occurrences of inappropriate and often dangerous activity in Griffith Woods. This includes illegal bonfires or campfires, drugs, drinking and loud music late into the night. The fires are of a special concern since they could easily lead to major house fires for the whole neighbourhood.

The community Bottle Shack has been repeatedly been van-dalized since it opened years ago. In the middle of the night of September 7th, after the Music in the Park event, vandals again broke in and stole all of the bottles and cans and dam-aged the fence in the process. As a result, we have closed the Shack for now while the Board reviews its options. Over the years proceeds from the Bottle Shack have been used to cover costs for special events, DRCA operating costs such as insurance, website hosting, annual audit fees, bank charges, AGM, as well as park operating costs (water, electricity, equip-ment) and other day to day operating costs.

We are also very fortunate to have incredible recreation fa-cilities such the ice rink, tennis and basketball courts and a storage building to keep these facilities running. However, recently there have been some individuals who have used these facilities as a late-night party place including climb-ing on top of the storage building, which is very dangerous. Luckily there has been no vandalism to these facilities, but we ask residents to keep an eye out for any late-night illegal activities or vandalism.

Vandalism financially impacts us all by reducing our property values, increasing our property taxes and making the operat-ing costs of our community facilities higher than they need to be.

We ask all Discovery Residents to do their part and report what they see:Call 911 for:•Drinking and Driving•Open Fires•Illegal or suspicious activity underway

•Public Intoxication or Disturbing the Peace•Graffiti in progress•Vandalism in progress

Call Police Non-Emergency 403-266-1234•Unusual situations such as vehicles parked and “exchanging”

items in the dark through car windows•It is imperative that all non-911 matters are called in to this

number so there is a record and statistics can be built. An ex-ample could be cars parked in the parking lot at 10pm (tech-nically the park is still open), music on, wandering in and out of the park occurring. In situations like this, although non-emergency, there are suspicious activities occurring.

Call 311 or report online (which includes City of Calgary Bylaw) for:•Dogs off Leash•Vehicles parked in the Griffith Woods Parking lot after hours•Graffiti •Vandalism to Griffith Woods

We are in contact with the Calgary Police Service to make this a District Priority. They advise that the more data they have and the more calls that are logged, the better they are able to establish patterns of activity which is vital as they develop effective strategies to improve safety. If you see anything, it is imperative to report the activities every single time, in order to help the CPS.

In addition to adults frequenting the park for inappropriate or illegal activities, on occasion, teens have been identified as participating in these activities. Our CPS Community Liaison Officer has contacted the area schools to have them assist with spreading the message that Griffith Woods is not a park for partying and enforcement is increasing. If you have older children, please ask them to spread the work as well and re-mind them that we can use their help too. If they know of any of this inappropriate activity, bringing it to a parent’s atten-tion to be reported, can also be most helpful. The bottom line is, we need to spread the message that Griffith Woods and the recreation Facilities are NOT the place for any inappropri-ate or dangerous activities.

The DRCA has this matter as a high priority item but we can-not solve the problem without community support. We need residents to be fully aware and to report any and all inap-propriate or questionable activities. It is the reporting that becomes the primary measurement for how important the matter ranks in relation to other matters around Calgary. We must work together before there is a serious forest fire, or a vehicle departing a party in the woods hits someone. Please report all inappropriate activity to the appropriate area so we can ensure Discovery Ridge remains a priority and safe for all.

Why Are the Skies Above...cont’d•Interval. Planes are often only 2 to 5 min-

utes apart.•Turboprop Aircraft. All aircraft create dis-

tinctive noise but prop planes, which are often flown over our area to and from des-tinations in B.C. and northern Alberta, are exceptionally noisy. •Helicopters. We seem to be beneath a he-

licopter flight path as well. Are they train-ing, sightseeing, traffic reporting, survey-ing? Why are they permitted to regularly use the busy airspace above us?•Overflights. Planes at, or near, cruising al-

titude are also above us and do produce noise. This is a relatively minor issue when compared to the noise of the specific YYC traffic, but it does add to the overall level of noise. •Elevation. Our hilly neighbourhoods are

at an elevation of approximately 3800 feet and this may add to the intensity of the air-craft noise which we experience. •Inbound and Outbound Flights. The Sar-

cee Corridor and other routes are used by both arriving and departing flights, some-times simultaneously. This leads to a situ-ation of planes criss-crossing one another above us.•Indirect Flight Paths. Planes often take a

circuitous route out of YYC. For example, flights to Frankfurt or Amsterdam will sometimes take off south, bank west, and then head north on the Sarcee Corridor. This indirect path unnecessarily traverses an enormous swath of communities.

Please continue to voice your concerns to Ron Liepert, M.P. for Calgary Signal Hill ([email protected], 403-292-6666). As a member of the TRAN Committee which produced the recent aviation noise report, he is in an important and unique positon to advocate for his constituents affected by aircraft noise pollution.
