Miss June was so, well, Cool. Surely there are more elegant words—many words in fact—to describe a ninety-five year old woman, but I don’t know any one word that captures my pure delight in being around June. As I struggled to unpack my boxes and squeeze everything into the small 6’ x 4’ office in the Charlotte church to which I had been appointed to serve alongside my husband, I was greeted by this 4’11” dynamo peaking from behind a vase of fresh cut flowers twice her width and almost half her size. “Oh, my,” she giggled; “These are a bit large for your little space. I suppose I got carried away in my garden this morning.” Over the next few years, I fell in love with that giggle and would seek out opportunities to spend time

with June, listening to her stories, gleaning from her sage wisdom, and bursting into laughter when she would roll her eyes and make light hearted declarations about her reluctant acquiescence to the changes in culture and the church. “I know that no one wants to take the time for everyone to kneel at the altar to receive communion, but I really don’t like this custom of walking up and taking communion,” she declared with a smile. “I stood in bread lines throughout the depression, and I don’t like waiting in a bread line at church!” We all knew, however, that whatever the occasion and regardless of the order, June would be at worship whenever the doors were open, and that the grace she received in the sacrament was multiplied in her and shared with everyone she touched. June had “good genes” (her oldest son was an active seventy-four year old who still worked his own farm in South Carolina), and she considered it an act of stewardship to take of the body God gave her.” “How are you feeling these days?” I asked her after she chose (her choice, not a family mandate) to give up her driver’s license (she couldn’t see over the dash board anymore) and move to a retirement community. “As fit and flexible as ever,” she declared, and in a flash she grabbed her ankle and touched her toes to her forehead. Three months before her 100th birthday, June submitted to gallbladder surgery and died from an ensuing infection. Honored to preach her funeral, I remember announcing that when I grew up, I wanted to be like June. In saying that, however, I remembered my mother warning; “When we get old, we become more of what we already were, so you need to start young becoming a person folks want to be around when you are old.” On a personal level it’s an admonition I live by. Am I becoming a person of such grace that being with me would challenge others to seek grace for themselves? Am I actively cultivating the fruit of the Holy Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, humility, kindness, self-control, faith), so that my life nurtures others? Rather than complaining about what is lacking in my life, am I filling my life with all that is holy? Perhaps this is also the challenge we present to ourselves as the church, and possibly the invitation we

continued . . .

(continued from page 2) make to the world. Shane Claiborne (founder of The Simple Way in inner city Philadelphia, a faith-based community seeking to be a living expression of the Christian faith, and author of books such as The Irresistible Revolution: Living as an Ordinary Radical. Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 2006) says of his adult transition to radical Christianity that he and his friends decided: “We’re going to stop complaining about the church that we’ve experienced and work on becoming the church that we dream of, and that we see in scripture.” What would the church look like in a year if we committed to Claiborne’s resolution? Imagine issuing the challenge to our friends and family, “Are you looking for the perfect church? Join me, and let’s become the church that God means for us to be.” It’s worth considering the possibilities of what we, the church, want to be when we grow up.

Church-Wide Outdoor Picnic Indoors (Fellowship Hall)

August 23, 2015, High Noon

(immediately following morning worship)

The meal will be provided by Caring Hands, hot dogs with all the trimmings, desserts, and beverages. This gathering is an opportunity for the congregation to meet our new minister, Elizabeth Graves, in a relaxed atmosphere. The informal setting will enable more members to talk one-on-one with her as she gets to know the congregation. Dress casual!

Put this date on your calendar and there will be a sign-up sheet on the information table (near the kitchen).

If you have questions, talk with Lib Jones. Daryl and I leave Monday, the 27th for a 3-week camping trip.

From Catholic Charities

Dear Burkhead Friends,

Thank you so much for your generous food donations to our Food Pantry in

July. Your support of our food pantry is especially appreciated now as it has

been very challenging to keep our shelves stocked for the past couple months.

Thank goodness for dedicated partners such as yourself who consistently seek

to support efforts to address issues of poverty.

Thank you for answering the call to help these families. Be assured you have

eased their daily struggle. Thank you for supporting our food pantry and the

assistance efforts of Catholic Charities.

Sincerely,

Diane Bullard

Regional Office Director
