Mission Report from April and May

Thank you to everyone who donated money to purchase books for the second

graders at Old Town Elementary School. We purchased 100 books at the

school book fair which meant we got the books at a good price and the school

got profit from Scholastic which will go to the media center for new materials.

The books were presented on the altar on Sunday, May 22 for everyone to

see. Remember to pray for the children whose lives will be enriched by these

books.

Our May mission project was for the SECU Family House. As we learned

from Katie Moore, a volunteer there, the Family House is a place where

families from out of town can stay while their family member is in the hospital

in Winston-Salem. Also, people from out of town who are waiting for, or

receiving outpatient treatments can stay. Our project was a cookie baking

party for the guests at the house. They can pick up a sweet treat to take along

to the hospital as they spend the day with their family member. We had a

great time working together making the cookies, and all of the bakers declared

the cookies were YUMMY! We made 126 bags of cookies and also had 43

cake pops donated which were presented on the altar on Sunday, May 22

before being delivered to the SECU Family House. Please remember to pray

for those who are staying at the Family House, the staff and volunteers who

minister to them, the family members in the hospital and the hospital staff who

are caring for them. Thank you to everyone who donated for supplies, made

cookies, and those who joined in the baking party. It was a sweet project!

Community Women's Bible Study

The next Community Women's Bible Study session will begin on Thurs-

day, July 14. We will begin a five week video study by Priscilla Shirer

called "Breathe--Making Room for Sabbath." We will meet on Thursday

mornings from 9:30-11:30, July 14-Aug. 11. All women in the church

and in the community are invited. Please help us spread the word and

invite your friends and neighbors. We will have fliers available soon.

Please take some and put them in places you frequent and to people

you meet.

The religion scholar said to Jesus, “You are right, Teacher! So lucid and accurate—that God is one and there is no other. And loving the Lord with all passion and intelligence and energy, and loving others as well as you love yourself. Why, that’s better than all offerings and sacrifices put together!” When Jesus realized how insightful he was, Jesus said, “You’re almost there, right on the border of God’s kingdom.” (Mark 12:32-34, The Message)

Is there ever a simple answer to questions of

faith? So many websites (even religious websites)

provide FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) pages with

the promise that one right click will guide me to a clear

and fast answer to my quandary. Unfortunately, I often

find each question followed by a long paragraph that only

partially satisfies my search for clarity.

The twelfth chapter of the gospel of Mark reminds

me of a biblical Q&A (Question and Answer) session

between Jesus and the faith community. Admittedly, it

begins as an attempted entrapment by Jesus’ detractors,

from those who fear his authority and the changes he is

bringing to the status quo, however, the interaction

develops into a witness of dynamic listening between

Jesus and a religious scholar, resulting in the discovery

of a powerful spiritual truth. After the Pharisees and

Sadducees barrage Jesus with questions for which they

have already decided right answers, one of the religious

scholars sincerely asks, “Which commandment is the

most important of all?”

The Burkhead congregation has been asking a

great many questions lately—not in the way of the

Pharisees and Sadducees, but honestly wrestling with

what is happening and will happen with this faith

community. Attempting to respond, I contemplated how

to write a simple FAQ column, but found that I have no

simple answers, because despite rumors and some fear-

driven inquires, NOTHING has been decided about

Burkhead’s future path of discipleship. June 26, during

the Sunday School hour, there will be another

Listening Session, and having laid the groundwork at the

last session (May 15), this session’s format is strait

Question and Answer. I suspect however, that simple

answers will only be possible after we address the

straight forward conversation between Jesus and the

religious scholar.

The religious scholar’s question, “Which

commandment is the most important of all?” draws me

back to the power of central, core questions. This was

the question of that faith culture. For our post-

resurrection church, our question might be “What is the

most important thing we need to be focusing on as

disciples of Christ?” In other words, as I challenged you

to consider at the May 15th meeting, “What’s the point?”

The scholar’s question, Jesus’ response, and the

scholar’s subsequent spiritual awareness brought all

other commandments and all life choices into clear

Financial Update

April Income $12,842.00 April Estimates Expenses $15,200.00 (which is 1/12 of budget)

Therefore, April's income was short $2,358.00. This is our second month short on income. Music on the Hill

We are planning some summer concerts to be held on the grounds. Everyone's help will be needed. We need people to help with publicity, set up, concessions, ushering/directing people, clean up, and other jobs. Sign-up sheets will be on the information table. Don't wait to be asked--volunteer today. These concerts will be our gift to the community so we all need to help. Performers and other details will be finalized soon, but mark your calendars for the following Sundays at 6 p.m. – July 17, July 31, August 14, and August 28.

alignment and focus. What is most important? “‘To

love the Lord God with all your passion and

prayer and intelligence and energy.’ And here is

the second: ‘Love others as well as you love

yourself.’…better than all offerings and

sacrifices put together!” (Mark 12:29-30, The

Message) In our culture, the scribe may have

responded, “more important than all the details of

how we do church,” challenging us to ask ourselves,

“Are we making every decision, or carrying out all

our programs and committee tasks, etc., in

response to the core question and response of living

out a singular, all-powerful and passionate love of

God? Is our every thought, decision, action and

reaction sacrificial to loving God and caring for our

neighbor’s needs and desires with the same weight

for which we consider our own needs and desires?

I invite you to keep asking questions, to keep

listening to one, and to continue to listen for the

direction of the Holy Spirit (when we come to God

with questions, we must be willing to actually

engage in a conversation and listen for the

answers). I urge you to first ask, “How can Burkhead

(and you as a disciple of Christ) best live out an all-

consuming love of God and respect and value

the needs and desires of others as much as your

own needs and desires. Maybe, just maybe, this will

bring us closer to “the kingdom’s borders.”

From Catholic Charities Dear Burkhead Partners, Thank you so much for your generous donation. Your huge heart helped a family in crisis, helped a baby to be placed in a loving home, and fed a hungry family. Thank you for partnering with us in this important work!

On behalf of the Board, residents, and staff, thank you for your contribution to the Annual Fund/ Mother’s Day Offering. Today, providing charitable care is the most acute challenge that Arbor Acres faces. We are especially grateful for your gift.

meal.

A Taste of Mission in June

Project Agape

We learned about Project Agape in our Lenten Devotional Calendar. This

month we will learn some more and do a project to help the children in Ar-

menia. We will be filling shoeboxes with toys and other needed items to

send to Armenia for Christmas distribution.

Armenia has some strict regulations about what can be sent, so please

only include items from the list and follow the packing instructions given.

Packing lists will be available on the table in the hall. Our goal is to fill 50

shoeboxes as we celebrate Christmas in June! Please bring your filled

shoeboxes to worship on Sunday, June 26 where they will be collected.

Burkhead’s

Memorial Garden

The Burkhead Memorial Garden was established as

an area for the burial or scattering of ashes and sits

on the far side of the church. The Garden is graced

by a beautiful white Celtic Cross and white stone

benches. It featuring a circular design divided into 4

areas with 3 of the areas designated for the burial of

ashes and the fourth where ashes may be scattered.

Plots may be purchased by members, former members or people who are not

members of Burkhead but wish to use our Garden as their resting place.

Each plot is topped with a granite marker which the family must order from the

granite company. Bronze markers from the same supplier will be used for scattered

ashes. The costs of the plots and arrangements for markers are available in a

brochure which can be found on the Information Table outside the kitchen. Plots

may be purchased for future use and your specific plot will be reserved.

The Garden is a beautiful area which everyone should visit. Go through the door on

the left side of the Fellowship Hall.

Burkhead rallies when there is work to be done! This is one of the first things I saw in this church and my sis-

ter and I agree on it. The chicken barbecue, the yard sale both are an example of all pulling together. It real-

ly turns into fun more than a “have to” when everybody is laughing, kidding and enjoying each other’s com-

pany. If you are a member and haven’t been able to join us in the past, I hope you will be a part of this year’s

projects and feel the love. What I am leading up to is this. My sister Gloria and I are heading up the annual

yard sale and we are doing it because of the camaraderie we have felt inn the past being a part of it. As par-

ticipants, we have seen how everyone falls right into the groove when we gather and automatically finds

their niche to be helpful and get the job done with co-operation and good organization. Each year has gotten

better because we have learned how to fine tune it all and make it work. So without further ado, here is the

plan thus far:

It’s time to start bringing to the church any items you think will sell at the Burkhead United Methodist

Church Yard Sale!

The items need to be spit shined, polished, in good working condition and ready for display. (No clothing,

please.)

There will be designated rooms for yard sale items, so look for the Yard Sale sign on the door as you

bring things to the church and make sure you read the list of what goes in which room.

Two rooms are on the children’s Sunday school hall and two are on the adult Sunday school hall.

If you have questions or have large items that need to be picked up call:

Gloria McGurk (804) 840-3910, or

Katie Moore (704) 794-4054

With your help and the good Lord above, we will have another successful sale!

Community Garden at Burkhead There is serious consideration being given to starting a raised-bed community

garden at Burkhead. Costs have been explored, and the possibility of getting

Scouts to help build the raised beds is also being looked at.

The goal for the garden is to share a percentage of the produce with the hungry.

(Church members as well as community members can garden the beds). We may

also be able to share a harvest meal or Earth Day meal--the possibilities are

endless!

There are many logistics to work out, but before we go any further, we need to

know the interest factor. People are needed to help with the planning process as

well as the gardening. If you are interested in helping with the community garden

project, contact Beth Dixon at 336-998-6349 or [email protected].
