Dear ReaderThe Children’s Safety Education Foundation is a national charity dedicated to the promotion anddelivery of Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education to children and young peoplethroughout the British Isles.

We do this by developing educational resources that can be used as part of the schools curriculumor at home with a trusted adult. The charity’s overall purpose is to reduce the number of child victimsin the British Isles by delivering quality interactive safety education.

Sadly, bullying remains a serious threat to the emotional health and well-being of children. Transitionyear is of particular interest to CSEF as children prepare to migrate from Primary to SecondarySchool. The fear of bullying is particularly prevalent at this time.

Since 2006, the Foundation, in partnership with Stoke-On-Trent Healthy Schools, has set aboutengaging with Year 6 pupils in and outside of their traditional learning environments. Our resourceseducate young people about the many dangers they may face in their everyday lives and encouragethem to make healthy choices and behave responsibily.

To ensure the successful introduction of our ‘Anti-Bullying’ resources, we utilise drama as a keyengagement mechanism. Drama enables us to raise difficult issues first hand and provide youngpeople with an experience that allows them to explore potentially risky situations in a safeenvironment. The activity complements existing programmes based around the Government’s‘Respect’ and ‘Staying Safe’ agendas and using the arts in this way we were able to explore theeffects and consequences of peer pressure.

With considerable financial help and encouragement from the Safer City Partnership, we were ableto work alongside Cragrats and the Healthy Schools Team to develop the performances and providecopies of our Anti-Bullying publication to almost 1,200 Year 6 pupils.

We hope to continue this work across the City and beyond to improve the everyday lives of youngpeople who live in our communities, equipping them with the necessary skills to make them feelsafe, valued and reassured.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has contributed to and supported thiscampaign. Without your help it simply would not have been possible.

Best wishes,

Lord Wade of ChorltonChair of Trustees “ Very professional,

• Excellent; some good ideas to take back into the classroom.

• Excellent, exuberant performance from all actors.

• I thought it was excellent. I would like to see them again acting out different scenes e.g. respecting others and their teachers.

• Well worth watching; good, educational and very helpful to the children.

• Well done! Lovely people – related well to the children. Thank you!

• Keep it up! A professional and well thought out presentation that appealed to the age group. Thank you!

• Many children did what their friends did during the workshops, maybe they should be asked to do role plays of given situations so they have more of a chance to express their own opinion and discuss what is right and wrong – only a suggestion, it was fabulous and lots of positive praise for the children. Thank you.

• Would recommend to others.

• Very professional, good pace, pitched at the right level. Good control of children and informative and enjoyable. Thank you!

• Thoroughly enjoyable and very useful to the pupils. Thank you.

• The actors involved interacted with the children at the appropriate level. The issues discussed were all useful and worthwhile. The rating (1 -10) activity highlighted to the staff how the children rated themselves. This was particularly interesting in relation to the children who have behavioural difficulties (even though this is only a small minority). This was a great workshop. Thank you!

• It has made the children think about social issues and has given them an awareness of peer pressure.

• Prompted them to think about their actions and how they affect others. Saw recognisable behaviours – hope in future it will help them to make the right choices.

• Very enjoyable – a serious message with lots of humour – thank you!

• I feel that it was enjoyed by all the children but some of them needed this at the end of Year 5.

• Performance accessible to all children. Engaged them in activity and the actors had great rapport with the children.

• The children liked the presenters and enjoyed all of the presentation.

• Presenters were energetic and enthusiastic.

• I feel it was aimed at the right level i.e. not too patronising / old. By the looks on faces I did think they were thinking about things aside from ‘bravado’ individuals, it was an interesting insight.

• I feel that it has been beneficial for Year 6 students because they are about to go to high school and become more exposed to some of the things talked about today.

• Gave the pupils a chance to see different views and to understand that sometimes they do affect people in different ways.

• The presentation was aimed at the children and they could relate to many of the situations that were used.

• I enjoyed the workshop and think that the activities worked well in making the children think about their actions and the actions of those around them and the impact it has on others.

• I thought the presentation and workshops were very informative and professionally done. The children really enjoyed it, as did I.

• Very good presentation; made enjoyable even though it was a very serious issue.

• The team were enthusiastic and connected with the pupils.

• Maybe the workshop numbers could be halved to 16 to give the quieter / reserved pupils more confidence to speak out. I loved it and really learned a lot about our children and has given me a point of reference for some future work.

• An excellent presentation – staff engaged the students fully and all had fun. Thank you!

• Very well presented in a lively and engaging way. Also included beneficial role play and discussion.

• Well presented, very funny and accessible to Year 6 children but with very clear, serious messages as well.

• Good mix of activities kept the pupils occupied and on task. Excellent relationships established with some very difficult pupils – just the right approach for our children

• Found it very enjoyable and definitely grabbed the children’s attention. George had a good relationship with them making jokes which probably made them feel more at ease.

• Thoroughly enjoyed by all – thank you!

• Excellent interaction between actors and pupils.

• Well done – pitched at the right level. well controlled. Thanks for all your efforts.

• It was interesting to watch as an adult as well. I thought format of presentation / interactive workshop was also effective.

• The presenters / actors related extremely well to the age group and were positive young role models as opposed to some unpleasant young people they will encounter at high schooland hanging around the area at night.

• Discussion about peer pressure and scenarios when they might face it, relaxed atmosphere gave the shy pupils confidence to share ideas and the boys related well to the presentation style and subject.

Dear Reader

At a time when lack of respect and antisocial behaviour dominate headlines across thecountry, 98% of participants said the presentation made them consider the effects ofsuch behaviour and acknowledge that certain actions can make others feel intimidated- a huge achievement.

Stoke-on-Trent, a thriving multi-cultural city, has long been working on projects tocombat antisocial behaviour.

We have several initiatives, the most notable being the ‘SSttookkee WWoonn’’tt SSttaanndd FFoorr IItt’campaign, which aims to reduce antisocial behaviour by addressing causes andminimising effects. We are determined to deal with these issues positively and make areal difference to people’s lives.

We are, therefore, delighted to be working closely with The Children’s Safety EducationFoundation to ensure that our young people are aware of the activities and events thataddress antisocial behaviour. It is also vital that we engage our youth population toensure they benefit from these schemes. We believe engaging with young people asearly as possible is a vital pre-emptive measure rather responding reactively.

The City Council is particularly interested in building a culture of respect withincommunities, supported by a strong neighbourhood management structure of localservices. By building respect, addressing antisocial behaviour and its causes andengaging with communities, we can begin to set the boundaries of acceptablebehaviour and create conditions where people feel safe to enjoy living, visiting andworking in Stoke-on-Trent.

Everyone involved in this project worked with passion and dedication and I would liketo say a special thank you to the schools, pupils and teachers.

This project has demonstrated the effectiveness of close partnership working.

Young people have an integral part to play in this safer future, and we hope that ourwork with The Children’s Safety Education Foundation will lead to a long-termreduction in the levels of antisocial behaviour in Stoke-on-Trent.

Once again, congratulations to all those involved!

• Very good; made the children think about different situations. The children were engaged at all times.

• Structured, and made the children think about antisocial behaviour.

• It is something we don’t get much time to teach directly in school.

• A good starting point for follow-up work in class. Aimed at their level / spoke their language.

• Very good performance – to the point on antisocial behaviour.

• It was highlighted in a practical and fun way. It showed what peer pressure is and also how to deal with it.

• It gave them an opportunity to think about what is acceptable behaviour and what they would do in the future.

• A good start to our work on ‘respect’ with Year 6 and Year 7’s transition. An interactive workshop helped the group with interaction with adults.

• Very good; useful for transition work and fits in with Personal, Social & Health Education. Theworkshops involved everyone. Humour appealed to students to demonstrate a serious situation. Activities were well organised and well timed.

• It was appropriate for issues which affect the pupils at this time (transition to high school). It has gone some way in preparing them in how to deal with such scenarios and has raised awareness of them.

• I think it has brought the realisation of peer pressure to the forefront.

• Loved the drama / activity. The approach was exactly the right style; I loved the way it tapped in exactly to their point of experience.

• They are at the right age / time of life for this message, and it was pitched well at their level and delivered in a very entertaining way by enthusiastic performers. It became apparent that many did not consider these actions to matter unless it affected them directly and this perception was challenged well.

• For some of the children in this group it was very important, some of them appear to have antisocial attitudes. I hope this helped them to think for themselves.

• It highlights awareness of antisocial behaviour and gave children the time to think.

• All the ‘topics’ discussed are very relevant and covered home and school environments where these situations exist.

• They all understood the message in the production and gave good feedback. All enjoyed the games; made them think about how issues affect them and the people around them.

• Explained important message in a fun, exciting way.

• Making children think in a different context.

• The decision-making process made the pupils think how anti-social behaviour affects different groups of people in different ways.

• It made them think and gave them time to explore antisocial behaviour.

• Some things they already knew – but it helps to clarify what they can do in certain situations, how to react. Rating violence / swearing etc. Very valuable exercise – excellent.

Qualitative Feedback - Teachers

• Some excellent responses from the children and the final group drama was very well done.

• Excellent reinforcement of what peer pressure is and how it can lead to antisocial behaviour. Also, good strategies taught to resist peer pressure.

• Pitched at the children’s level. Funny and got the point across.

• It was pitched at the right level and the children felt relaxed in the workshops. The main message about peer pressure hopefully got through. Excellent, thank you.

• The children really seemed to relate to their own experiences and understand pressure and the consequences of their actions.

• Enjoyable for children – comes down to their level – fantastic. Got them thinking about how their actions may affect others and how they may feel.

• Informative and presented in an engaging and interesting way. The children were responsive and clearly enjoyed the performance.

• Attentive listening, thoughtful approach to difficult topic, full audience participation and well organised.

• Hopefully they have understood that they all have choices to make. It will have made them aware of peer pressure before transition to high school.

• With continued discussion this will help them to think about their actions and how it affects others.

• Covered many aspects of antisocial behaviour and actions to take to prevent involvement. Enjoyable, interactive and thought-provoking.

• Presented a lot of real life topical issues in a child-friendly way. Made the children think.

• Makes them think about other people’s feelings.

• It was beneficial because it got the children thinking about all different sorts of anti-social behaviour. Things that they didn’t realise were antisocial behaviour, they now know.

• The presentation allowed the children to think about real life situations. I could sense that the children really had to assess where their perceptions and opinions lay, especially when they had to rate 1 – 10. The visual nature of this activity was very effective.

• It was a reflection of society today.

• Some children thought about peer pressure and how to handle it, which is a good thing.

• The initial play engaged the children fully by teaching at the right level and through accessible themes. The acting was brilliant as well.

• Taught them to value their own opinions and beliefs and not bow to peer pressure.

• The children listened well and understood how their actions affected them.

• I learnt not to go down the same path as my friends all the time in my life I will keep thinking about it so I don’t get into bad situations.

• I enjoyed the presentation very much because it taught me a lesson like how to just be individual.

• I have learnt that actions don’t speak louder than words. I will try harder to think how it feels for others in the future.

• Antisocial behaviour is not a clever or big thing to do; it doesn’t get you anywhere.

• I learnt about people taking drugs and I will never do that in my life.

• Don’t trust your friends with everything because they could use it against you.

• Say no to silly, naughty people. I feel proud and happy to have learnt more about anti-social behaviour.

• The effects of peer pressure are horrible. I also learnt that some of my friends have different opinions on the offence scale.

• The play at the beginning showed a believable and real example of peer pressure and antisocial behaviour etc, which makes you think about it happening to you. Overall the session was great and enjoyable.

• I learnt that people can be pressured into a lot of things but you need willpower and a strong mind to choose your own life.

• I feel proud that people can learn not to vandalise, swear or be violent and I sure have learnt and listened to it and will use it for the rest of my life.

• I learnt a lot and I’ll be sure to remember to use it in important times.
