A Note from Kathy Dube, Administrator As it turns out, our hoped-for April 1st move in date
turned out to be "April Fools”! However, there could be
light at the end of the tunnel. Let's hope it's not just a roaring train! The installation
of the additional sprinkler system in the attic continues with anticipated completion
around the last week in March. The first inspection, which was to be by the engineer
from the state department in Lansing, that was scheduled for this past week did not
happen due to the weather further south. That is now re-scheduled for mid March.
We will still have the fire marshal's inspection, the possible need to apply for the
waiver on the roof issue, and a final inspection from our licensing team in Gaylord
before we can move in, maybe late April or May. Maybe. ~Kathy

Resident Reflections-Dan Link
Dan Link was born on March 23, 1936, in Fort Wayne,
Indiana. He has many good memories of growing up with
his sister, Barbara, who is three years older than him.
He had a very happy childhood and his father introduced
him to a lifetime love of the out-of-doors through camp-
ing, shooting, gun collecting, hunting, and fishing. He
also inspired in him a love of music and the Episcopal
Church.
In high school, Dan sang with the a cappella choir and in
many musical productions. He also competed with the
rifle club and achieved the highest award, Distinguished
Rifleman. In 1954 he was the first winner of the Zeis
Trophy for the Allen County resident making the highest
individual score.
Before Dan was out of high school, he began working in the family business; a
dental equipment repair and supply business. Dan took over as president when his
father died and later hired his son to work in the company - making it a four
generation operation.
In 1955 he married his high school sweetheart and they had 3 children (who gave
him 3 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren). Dan served with the Air
National Guard in France during the Berlin crisis. After living in Fort Wayne all
his life, in 1989 they retired to family property near Cedar. Dan drove a school
bus for Glen Lake and did maintenance work in retirement, continuing his life-long
interests with active participation in St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Beulah and
the Cedar Rod and Gun Club of Leelanau County. After more than 50 years of
marriage, his wife died and Dan married their good friend, Mary, in 2009. During
their short time together they enjoyed working in their native garden and travel-
ing. They traveled to a Dude Ranch for their honeymoon, and also enjoyed trav-
els to Isle Royale, Italy, the Florida Keys, and two months in the Southwest. Dan
enjoyed deer hunting into his late 70's, sang with the Benzie Community Chorus,
and volunteered at the Benzie History Museum, Interlochen Arts Academy and
Oliver Art Center. Article by Mary Link

Mardi Gras
There was a festive atmosphere in The Maples dining room as the residents
enjoyed a Mardi Gras celebration complete with colorful beads, masks, feath-
ers, and the traditional paczkis. There was also wonderful music as Roger Blue
played a variety of favorites on the piano.
Super Bowl
Super Bowl 50 was celebrated with all the extras on
Sunday, February 7. The residents made huge foot-
ball posters, there were football pennants hanging
from the ceiling and decorating the tables, and the
kitchen made wonderful cookies decorated in the
two team colors along with lots of football snacks
for the residents to enjoy. The residents were
cheering for both teams but were happy that the
Denver Broncos won over the Carolina Panthers with
the final score of 24-10, giving the Broncos their
third Super Bowl victory.

Chinese New Year
The Maples Mission Statement
To provide accessible, high-quality long-term care; to meet the
evolving health care needs of the residents of Benzie County.
The residents were able to celebrate Chinese New Year with a special lunch prepared
by the Activity and Dietary staff. There were homemade eggrolls, wontons (thank you
Bud!), pineapple chicken, fried rice, salmon-veggie skewers, and pink jello fluff. We
appreciate the extra work the staff gave to make the day extra tasty.
Art Exhibit
One of our residents, George Stubbs, recently held an art
exhibit for the residents, his family, and friends. When you
see George, his hands are busy quilting, doing needlepoint,
or painting. There was a wonderful display of the many pro-
jects he has made along with some articles about George
when he worked on the state capital building in Lansing.

Shiver by the River
The Maples sponsored a warm-
ing station during Frankfort’s
Shiver by the River. Many staff
volunteered their time on a
Saturday and served up hot
chocolate along with homemade
cookies. They also handed out
hand warmers, travel mugs, and
chapstick which all came in
handy on a winter’s day.
Congratulations Newlyweds
The Maples recently held a housewarming
shower for Amanda and Kevin Jensen.
They were just married on December 22,
2015 and have moved into the new home
they are renting. The residents and staff
celebrated with a beautiful cake and the
newlyweds received two Tupperware sets
and a gift card. Amanda admitted that
Kevin does most of the cooking but that
she’ll be learning quickly in the weeks
ahead. Kevin is serving in the United
States Army and was just posted to Korea
for a year. You may remember Kevin from
when he worked in our Dietary Department
and Amanda currently works in Activities.

Red Cross Month
Each year, the president of the United States proclaims March "Red Cross
Month" How did this tradition come about?
Since Clara Barton created the American Red Cross in 1881, it was largely
dependent for publicity and funds on the spontaneous support of people who
learned of catastrophic events and the Red Cross response to them. News of an
event broke and the American Red Cross rushed to the scene with help. People around the coun-
try came forth with outpourings of volunteer assistance and donations of funds and supplies.
A change occurred in 1917, when the United States entered World War I. After declaring war,
President Woodrow Wilson ordered the American Red Cross to raise funds to support its aid to
the military and civilians affected by war, as Congress had mandated. In response, the Red Cross
held its first national War Fund drive in June 1917 and set as its goal $100 million, an astoundingly
large sum at the time. The public response was immediate and overwhelming.
After the War, the Red Cross decided to make the Roll Call an annual membership and fundrais-
ing drive. In addition, it conducted special appeals from time to time in response to major disas-
ters. In November 1941, with war in Europe, the Red Cross conducted a highly successful 25th
Annual Roll Call. A few days later, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and the United States en-
tered World War II. The American Red Cross responded immediately by declaring a War Fund
campaign. By June 1942, it had raised more than $66 million.
In 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared the month of March 1943 as “Red Cross
Month.” The Red Cross set a goal of $125 million, the largest amount ever requested in one cam-
paign by any American organization. Again, the response was overwhelming. It took less than six
weeks to reach the target. By June 1943, donations totaled nearly $146 million. Roosevelt called it
"the greatest single crusade of mercy in all of history." As part of the tradition, the President cus-
tomarily issues a proclamation each year declaring March as Red Cross Month.
This Red Cross Month, your donations can make a difference! Because of you, the Red Cross can
respond to nearly 200 neighborhood emergencies every day. The Red Cross works tirelessly
to provide help and hope when people need it most, and they are grateful for the public support
that enables them to continue their work, here at home and abroad.
