Introduction

For the sixth mandatory assignment, Studio Shooting, the assignment was to create an advertisement for a new internet radio stations. This ad was to be used on various public transport platform, as well as on the internet platform Spotify. The brief said that the internet radio station wanted to studio pictures of one or more people. We had three different radio stations to choose between, and I chose to make an ad for a radio station playing independent "up and coming» artist in the electronica and indie genres. We had to create the two ands for the separate plat-forms in two different formats, the public transport platform ad was to be made in a 29,7 x 42cm format, and the ad for the internet platform Spotify was to be in a 1050 x 900 px format.

This report will show the research, work process, sketches and the final thoughts and ideas behind the design (the ad itself) and the photoshoot I had to do for this assignment.

Research

Existing advertisment

Starting out with the research on this assignment, I first started looking at pictures of advertisements for public transport platforms, and inter-net platform advertisements. From what I discovered when researching ads for public transport platforms, I could see a common denominator for these types of ads, as I found the main part of them were very preci-se and «to the point», with few paragraphs or lines with words in them. Many of the ad also had simple graphics/pictures, which I think is done to keep everything relevant and short.

I figured the reason behind this is that the people seeing and being exposed to these ads are people on the go, so for the advertisements to get their point across in a short amount of time , the text (and pos-sibly graphics) are kept to a minimum. In addition, the public transport platforms are usually quite busy and things can get very distracting and stressful on such places, so it is essential to keep the ad as short, upbeat and relevant as possible.

The Spotify ad could possibly be exposed a bit longer to the viewer (and in a more relaxed setting), but I think that also this ad should be very specific and precise, as the main audience for this ad probably is used to much information at the same time. I believed it would be beneficial to keep the ad to the point and get the message across in a «quick» but interesting way. The ad should attract new listeners and create interest in the radio station of my choosing, and this is something I really want to accomplish with my ad.

EXISTING ADVERTISEMENTS - ADVERTISEMENT STYLE - PHOTOSHOOT - TARGET AUDIENCE

As the main audience for the ad I am supposed to make for the public transport platform most likely will only briefly see it, it is therefore crucial that the advertisement provides the main message (and main informa-tion behind) of the ad in a precise and short way, so that I am sure that all of the information I want to present in this ad is coming across to the viewers of it. I want the ad to be easy to spot, easy to read and easy to understand, and I wanted the same things with the Spotify ad.

Research

Advertisement style

Because I intended the ad to reflect the radio station itself, I also had to do some research of the style of the two different genres the station is playing. For this part of the research, I decided to look up indie/electroni-ca album covers and EP covers, as well as indie/electronica music ads.

Researching the indie genre, I found that the original meaning behind it is simply «independent» music, where the music is produced and relea-sed by independent bands/artists or independent record labels (with low to moderate budgets). In the recent years the indie term has been a bit «washed out», so many big and well-known artists actually falls within the indie genre and it includes music that isn’t independently produced. It is a genre that includes the styles indie rock and indie pop. I also lear-ned that the main listeners for this type of music is mainly of a younger age, and it is music that you wouldn’t typically hear on the radio, it’s a bit more «out there». The overall feeling that the indie genre gives, is a mix of a type of obscure, dreamy, vintage and kind of hipster, free-spirited emotions. Common elements when doing indie inspired graphic work could be anything from elements like feathers, dream-catchers, flowers and ornaments (very detailed and intricate pictures/illustrations), to the sky, clouds, nature, mountains and so on. The typefaces used for indie inspired designs may vary a lot, but a lot of script and serif typefaces are used, but you can find many designs with basic sans serif typefaces as well. In many cases the typeface look very hand-drawn and vintage, which is reflected by the overall style/look itself.

EXISTING ADVERTISEMENTS - ADVERTISEMENT STYLE - PHOTOSHOOT - TARGET AUDIENCE

When starting out researching the electronica genre, I found that ele-ctronica actually is a umbrella term that includes various electronic-ba-sed styles such as techno, house, ambient, drum and bass, jungle and industrial dance, among other styles. When doing research of the ele-ctronica style/genre, I thought that the overall look was very abstract and colourful (combined with dark backgrounds), which I felt resulted somewhat philosophical and «unreal» feelings. The graphics used on for instance album covers and EP covers are very abstract, with much use of lines, circles, triangles, squares and other basic shapes. It is also common to see bright colours combined with dark backgrounds, with the colours often leaning more towards appearing neon when it comes to bright-ness. As much of the designs inspired by the electronica genre is quite abstract, it is a bit hard to point at common elements used for this style. Shapes and lines are often used, and musical elements like instruments and other equipment (guitars, keyboards, headphones and so on) are so-metimes incorporated, as well as animated/illustrated pictures of people (often only the head), animals or other things from nature. These illustra-tions usually look a bit unrealistic, which is done so it looks more abstract to suit the overall style the electronica genre has.

Photoshoot

When doing some research before the photoshoot, I first looked at in-die and electronica inspired pictures to get an overall feeling of how the pictures possibly should look. I also did some research on how to get good portrait/studio shots, and I focused some of the research on ligh-ting and how to light up my shots and how to use various light sources (and modifiers) in the best possible way. For this part of the research, I simply wanted to get some helpful tips that could help me get the pictu-res looking more professional, special and interesting, as well as getting some inspiration to what to have the model do/how she could pose (and wear) in the photoshoot itself.

Target audience

In my research of the target audience, I decided to focus on the people that actually listens to this type of music, and I found that the average listener to electronica music mainly is between the ages of 18-34, where the majority is between 18-24. For the indie genre, the average listener is also usually of a younger age (from 15-24 years old) as in the electroni-ca genre, but they are usually male, as opposed to the electronica genre that has a approximate 50% division between female and male liste-ners. The majority of the listeners within the electronica and indie genres usually likes to party and hang out with friends, they are the ones that don’t want to follow the crowd and they like to do their own thing. They are more of the hipster types that likes to discover new things and listen to (in many ways) relatively special and unusual music.

I wanted the target audience for my ads to be the people listening to the music, so my target audience is therefore men and women (interested in this type of music) between the ages 18-34, This may be a wide span, and I could narrow down the target audience, but because of the style/genre I intended to base my design on, and considering the types of per-sons that likes this kind of music, I felt it was best to keep the age span and target audience pretty wide. The ad will be shown on two different platforms, and on these platform it will strike a lot of people, so I didn’t want the target audience to be too specific and defined.

Planning the photoshoot

Reading the assignment for the first time and deciding which radio sta-tion I wanted to make an ad for, made me first think about who I could use as a model. I instantly asked my youngest sister, and she gladly said yes. Already when she said yes and I knew that it was her I was going to shoot, I instantly got a vision of a photoshoot with a radio «DJ» look/feeling, and I thought that her acting as/looking like a DJ in the pictures would be cool and suit/be relevant to the type of ad it was (music/ra-dio). Until this point I had worked a lot with the learning activities of that week, so I had gained a lot of new knowledge about lighting and studio shooting.

As it said in the brief, the radio station I was going to make an ad for wanted to studio one or more persons, and I therefore decided that I was going to make a studio setup where I could shoot. I have access to a lot of different lighting and camera equipment, everything from many different light sources, modifiers (softboxes, umbrellas, grids, snoots and so on), different kinds of reflectors and backdrops, to filters, different stands/grips and much more. l also has a dad with a lot of knowledge within photography and studio shooting, so I knew that I would get a lot of helpful tips so I could get good use of the lights and other equipment. When planning the photoshoot, I first spoke with my dad about what equipment he exactly had to know which options I had.

Doing the photoshoot

I decided that I wanted to use two lights in front of the model, and I wanted to use softboxes on these lights. This light modifier both softens and evens out the light coming from the light source. I could have used umbrellas, but I knew that the space I was going to use for studio setup was rather limited (I had to have the lights pretty close to the model) so I thought that the softboxes would provide me with more soft and con-trollable light. The softboxes I used was two octaboxes, each with a dia-meter of 90cm. As this was my first studio setup, I didn’t want to overdo it or take on too much, so I knew that I wanted to keep it somewhat simple even though I had quite a lot of different equipment I could use. I thought that I would take use of as little equipment as possible, as I feel like I have a lot to learn when it comes to this and I wanted to be sure that I did everything right and that the equipment was used in a careful way, and as beneficial way as possible.

I also had a natural light source (a big window) in front of the model, but this was very dim and didn’t really provide any useful or noticeable light when it was the only light source in a shot, so I don’t think it had that much impact on the overall lighting in the shot. I used light weight stands for the light sources, which were two monolights. Because of the limited space/area of the studio setup, the lights were pretty close to the model and I the monolights was therefore set to the lowest f/stop. This means that the light sources provided as little power/light as they could. As the two lights in front (key and fill light) provided me with enough light on both the model and on the background, and considering that the studio setup was quite crammed, I decided to not add a back light for this shoot.

Work processPHOTOSHOOT

My dad has several backdrops, but I didn’t want that normal backgro-und on these pictures, as I was pretty sure that I was going to edit the picture and make her into a silhouette I could place on a patterned or imaged background. I therefore decided to use a green backdrop for this shoot. It was a textile background and he hadn’t used it before, so it wasn’t ironed or anything so it was a bit of wrinkles on it (I couldn’t do it myself either as my model didn’t have that much time to do the shoot), so the pictures with the green background may look a bit messy. Since I thought I would edit the pictures and it would be a silhouette with only her and no background, I felt it was ok that the background originally wasn’t perfect.

I had my sister accessorized with a cool hat and some big headphones for most of the shoot, to go with the main idea/vision I had come up with, with her figuring like a radio DJ. Based on my research of style (in-die/electronica genres, I took some mysterious and «anonymous» shots I felt was a bit inspired by the «overall» look of the two genres.

I took quite a lot of different pictures in this shoot and I played a bit with the lighting, and in some shots I only used one of the softboxes. For the most part I used both light sources, but because of the style I was going for, as well as for a part of the learning activities, I took some shots that had more dramatic light with only one source on one side of the model. The pictures I took gave me nice options to make an ad out of, and I am pretty happy with the result.

This is one of the first shots I took while finding the right amount of light. As you can see, her face is overexposed, so it was too much light in this shot. Also, you can see a black shadow line on the top part of the picture, and this is something I wan-ted to avoid, so I had to adjust the power of the lights and place them a bit diffe-rently (I adjusted the light on her right side a bit higher and tilted down at her).

In this picture, I had only one of the softboxes in use (the one on her right side), to get a more dramatic light that produced more shadows and contrast.

Digital developmentFINDING A NAME - MAKING THE LOGO - SELECTING SHOTS AND EDITING - DEVELOPMENT OF AD

Finding a name for the radio station

Because I wanted the ad to be as realistic as possible, I knew that I would have to make a logo and create a name and «brand» for the radio station. I didn’t want to spend so much time on this as it really isn’t that major part of the assignment, but in my head, the ad wouldn’t look rea-listic or «ready for public» before having a real logo to go with it. The use of a logo establishes a sense of a brand and a sort of quality, and it ma-kes the ad look more believable. Before making the logo (which I only did by digital work), I had to come up with a catchy and relevant (to the type of radio station) name. I had a small brain-storming with some simple and short words that I associated with the two genres the radio station plays - indie and electronica. I did this brainstorming digitally, and I have made a quick sketch of it.

Indie/electronicafrom new and upcoming artists

As you can see in the map over my brainstorming for finding a name, I came up with some words I thought might work as a radio station name. I knew that I would have to combine this name together with the word radio (for the logo to be as descriptive as possible), so it was important for me to find a name that worked well combined with radio. I had some typefaces in mind that I knew would work well for the intended over-all look of the advertisement, so I tried out some of the different words (Spark, Voltaic, Ascend, Uprise and Flash) with these typefaces, and I fo-und that the one I thought would make the better logo (as well as soun-ding good combined with the word radio) had to be the word spark.

Digital developmentFINDING A NAME - MAKING THE LOGO - SELECTING SHOTS AND EDITING - DEVELOPMENT OF AD

Making the logo

I then quickly made a logo with two of the typefaces I had tried out, and added a simple illustration reflecting the name I had chosen - a very ba-sic and simple-shaped illustration of a spark. I wanted to keep it simple and clean, and do the logo in as little time as possible, so it is therefore quite basic and straightforward. I altered the top word in the logo a bit, just by extending the vertical line on the p, so that it would line nicely up with the bottom of the word radio which is placed under the top word, aligned to the left and also lining nicely with the ending of the top word. I put the spark illustration behind both words, so that it (approximately) has the same height as both the words in the logo do together. I wanted the logo to have a indie/electronica kind of look and feeling to it and I believe that in this case, the typography I have used (two different type-faces) really amps up the overall look of the logo, and is really the main contributor to the logo giving the right feeling and having the look I was going for.

Selecting shots and editing

As the pictures I had shot and intended for this advertisement had to be edited for them to be usable (for the intended type of design/picture use I had in mind), I will firstly explain a bit about how I did the selecti-on of pictures and a bit about the editing of them, before showing the work process of the design/put together of the ad itself. When going over the pictures, I mainly found three different options I thought would work in the ad. I did some editing where I both edited and completely removed the background. I quickly decided that I was going for the idea I had and make a silhouette of the model, and I therefore wanted to use a shot where you really could see the headphones, as I felt these were a logic and explanative element (in relation to what the ad is about) to draw attention to and focus on.. I intended the picture for the ad to be a bit mystic, and some of the shots where the model was standing with her back faced towards the camera and holding the headphones on her head gave a very «anonymous» and mystical feeling that I felt could give the ad an interesting and engaging element that might create some curiousness in the viewer.

Digital developmentFINDING A NAME - MAKING THE LOGO - SELECTING SHOTS AND EDITING - DEVELOPMENT OF AD

I decided to go with this picture, so I refined and perfected the backgro-und removal of the picture so that the silhouette had nice edges and everything looked good with a totally clean background. I did some ad-justments to the colour (made it black and white), to the exposure, to the brightness/contrast and to the shadows/highlights. I also adjusted the clarity of the picture a bit. Some of these adjustments were crucial for the picture to look as good as possible for the ad, like the black and white adjustment. I didn’t really like the original colour of the hat the model wore and I wasn’t really happy with the colour of the sweater she had on. By making the picture in black and white I could apply gradients on top of the hat that would make it into a more interesting and rele-vant element instead of something I originally was quite displeased with, and the sweater got a nice black colour that I thought would work/look better when applied to the ad.

29 30

Page 17: Report - MA06 Studio Shooting - WordPress.com › 2017 › 04 › ... · thoughts and ideas behind the design (the ad itself) and the photoshoot I had to do for this assignment

Developing the advertisement

The picture for the ad was ready, so I could start out with the design of the ad itself. When starting out working on the advertisement, I first placed the picture/silhouette I had edited on a black background. I then added the logo (in a white version), and the text elements I intended to include in the ad. I wanted the text to be explanatory to what the radio station was all about, in a short and precise way, as well as including a fictional frequency for it. I decided to have to separate text elements (not including the logo), with a shorter paragraph stating that it is a new station and the frequency, and a longer paragraph with a more elabora-te explanation of what kind of music the station is playing. I felt like the background in this ad was very important, and I knew that I wanted a background that gave a indie or electronica feeling.

I was leaning more and more against a look inspired by the electronica genre as I went on with the design, and when playing around with it and trying out some different backgrounds (clouds, gradients, light speckles, outer space pictures, abstract pictures and so on), I decided that I wan-ted to go for a quite dark and abstract look with pops of bright colour. I thought that this would both look good in the ad, and be relevant to what the radio station plays. For both of the public transport platform ad and the internet ad, I played a lot around with the placement of the various elements before finding the right places for them in relation to the picture. I wanted the focus to mainly be on the logo and on the text elements, and I wanted the picture to accompany and work nicely toget-her with them.

I chose to add a QR-code to the ad that was going on the public trans-port platform, which «leads» to the radio stations homepage (it’s an example QR-code). This is because of the target group and their age, as well as them being updated and want to get things done fast, I thought that the QR-code would be a nice feature for the public transport plat-form ad and hopefully make it easier for people to show interest in and discover the ad/radio station.

Because the internet platform Spotify offers the option of having clicka-ble links on their commercials, I thought that it would be a good idea to add a «visit our homepage» button on this ad. This is to make it easier for the intended target group to discover and check out the radio stati-on. The button should draw a bit of attention to make people click it.

To make the ads look a bit more special and ”out of the ordinary”, I deci-ded to keep all the text elements (except in the logo and on the button in the Spotify ad) written with lowercase letters. I thought this created an interesting touch/spin in the ad, and I thought it worked well with the other elements in the ad.

Advertisement style/genre

The overall style/genre of the two ads are more inspired of the electro-nica genre than it is of the indie genre. I first tried to combine these two, but having in mind that I wanted the ads to be as specific, clear and to the point as possible, without any distracting or overpowering elements, I decided that it would be best to have only one of the styles/genres come to life in the design. I chose to make the ads in a way that is re-flecting the electronica genre and to include elements that could be re-cognized by and create interest within the people familiar to this type of music. I wanted the style of the ads to be very youthful, dark and myste-rious, abstract but simple and have an overall look that made it all come together in a nice way.

I simply wanted to create interest in the ads and the radio station it pro-motes, and I have tried to design them in a way that hopefully captures and keeps the attention from the viewers of it for as long as possible. The style I have based the ads on should speak to the target audience, and the way the information and elements the viewers are presented with should make them figure out what this ad is all about, and then peak a further interest in the radio station itself.

Typography

I have chose to keep the main typography in the ad very simple, with a sans serif typeface on all the text elements on both ads. I have chosen to keep the main paragraphs in all lowercase letters, for a more special and unusual look.

For the logo I have used two different electronica/indie inspired typefa-ces, with quite special and somewhat decorative looks.

Colour

I have kept the overall look of the ads quite dark, with a black and dark blue background, the picture in black and white, as well as text elements and the logo white. I have incorporated a bright colour for the details in the background, and on the hat of the model. I have chosen these bright colours and used them in combination with a dark background, as I felt it was very appropriate and reflective when I considered the style I was going for. I have used a gradient with three different colours in the co-lours on the hat in the ad, a deep and a light blue and a bright green colour. I wanted the colours in the hat to be of the same hues/tones as the colours in the background image.

The three spot colours I have used in the hat gradient are a bit different depending on whether they are in CMYK-format (the printable ad), or in the RGB-format (for computer screen ad). This is because I have made sure that the colours I have used in are safe to use in both formats, so that I wouldn’t get any surprising change of colour in my ads after prin-ting and online/web presenting.

The background is an abstract background image I have downloa-ded from this source: http://www.freepik.com/free-vector/digital-te-chnology-background_1055187.htm#term=abstract background&pa-ge=1&position=18

The colours have been toned down a bit (on the hat) by a black transparent colour overlay, so they wouldn’t appear too bright and make to much difference between the black and white model and the colours on the hat.

Composition

I have tried to incorporate all the elements I thought would be necessa-ry for these ads to be as believable and realistic as possible. I wanted to provide the viewers with a main message that sufficiently informs about the new radio station (as sufficient as you can get in a limited/restricted ad) and I wanted it to create interest in the viewer.

I think that the way I have placed the text elements, the logo and the studio picture/silhouette gives a nice overall look of the ad and I think it looks tidy, the information is presented in a clear and precise way in the composition and I believe that this ad would work on both platforms. For the Spotify ad, I wanted things to be aligned and kind of ”crammed” a bit together, so that the information easily can be absorbed.

In the public transport platform ad, I chose to be a little more creative with the placements of the different text elements, which I thought wor-ked nicely and created an interesting and recognizable form of ad.

Studio shooting and ad making

I have had much fun with this assignment, and I have learned a lot about studio setups for these last weeks. I had a nice experience with my first studio setup, and I look forward to trying it out again very soon! This assignment provided me with much insight within lighting and ta-king studio shots, and I think that I have used the time effectively for this assignment. I have done a lot of research that provided me with a good base for making the products and doing the photoshoot required for this assignment. I think that I have managed to make two ads that fits the radio station and provides the information about the station needed, as well as having the overall style I was going for.

I believe that the ad(s) I have come up with, both speaks to the target group and reflects the radio station promoted in the advertisement. I have chosen to keep the two ad(s) a bit specified to their platforms, with a QR-code on the public transport platform ad and a linked button on the Spotify ad to make them seem more realistic, «usable», and more targeted towards the target audience.

I have included the sources/resources I have used for this assignment along the way throughout this report.
