Keep in mind the Principles of Design!

When designing your poster, where you place things matters! Some commonly used principles when making a poster include contrast, proportion, repetition, emphasis, and balance. Keep these in mind when you are placing all of your information and images together, digitally or handmade.

144 Artists: I have selected a few of my favorite artists in bold if you want help narrowing down the list. You do not have to choose an artist in bold.

This poster was created digitally. Although it does not show an artist, but rather a style of art, you can see a good example of how to space your text and images. Not all of the images are in the same place, they are spaced out throughout the poster. The student also used a background that was also incorporated to the style.

This Chuck Close poster demonstrates a combination of handmade and digital work. The student chose to type their information and print it. The student used many squares of color to create the title “Chuck Close” demonstrating how to use the artists style within the poster.

This Louise Nevelson poster demonstrates a poster created entirely by hand. The student took the collage style of the artist and used that to break up the background of the poster with cardboard pieces. This is a great example of how the poster itself can represent the artist as well.

No Paint? No Problem!

These fabric “paintings” by artist Demont Pinder show how you can take everyday fabric/clothing items to create works of art! This is just another option besides drawing and painting and is NOT required.

Consider recreating your artists work using clothing, but make sure to work BIG! You would need a very large open floor area to create something like these. When finished, photograph your picture and then put the items back where they belong.
