Blood was provided by a small panel of a few hundred voluntary donors, mainly organised through the police. In those days all aspects of blood transfusion, including administration to patients, were carried out by Dr Houston and his team in the laboratory. In 1948 the staff of the RVH presented Sir Thomas with a portrait of himself painted by Frank McKelvey RHA.
