My name is Mr. Gordon. This is the beginning of my 21st year as a teacher! I love teaching and my goal is to make Social Studies class interesting, engaging, and fun. When students truly engage in learning, it is the opposite of boring and they we learn a whole lot more in the process. I hope that you join me in this new adventure with a positive attitude and willingness to participate!

P.S. I am a Packers fan!

Ms. O’Callaghan

Hello, I am Ms. O’Callaghan and I am a learning specialist for fifth and sixth grade this year. I will be working with the fifth graders in Social Studies with Mr. Gordon. I have been very lucky to be at Goudy for 25 years. The staff and the students are very special to me. This has been a very memorable and hectic summer for me because my twin daughters left for college this year. I look forward to working with your children! Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions during this challenging quarter.

1st Quarter

L2- The First Americans: Students begin the lesson by taking a “journey” that mirrors the journey that scientists believe the “First Americans” took to cross over from Asia to North America on a land bridge. They also listen to a Hopi origin story that tells quite a different tale about how the first people came to be in this earth. L3- American Indian Cultural Regions: Students learn about 7 distinct regions of our country (and parts of Mexico and Canada) in which different tribes of American Indians once lived. They learn about the land, climate, and natural resources in each region. They also find out about a number of different cultural artifacts that relate to the American Indians in each region. Examples of these artifacts include shelters, clothing, tools, etc. They take notes about each region in a booklet and also identify the 7 regions on a map. They test their knowledge on a lesson quiz and then embark upon the culminating activity, The American Indian Google Slides Project.

American Indian Google Slides Project Students will work in groups to research and become experts on 1 tribe that lived in one of the regions we studied in lesson 3. Students will be provided with books and websites to aid in their research. Students are encouraged to dress up, learn words in their tribes language, be creative, and to be like “mini-teachers” when they present about their tribe in front of the class.
