“Our generation will show that it can rise to the promise found in each young person when we know how to give them space. This means that we have to create the material and spiritual conditions for their full development; to give them a solid basis on which to build their lives; to guarantee their safety and their education to be everything they can be." - Pope Francis

Qualities of a Good Catechist*Basic Requirements for Acceptance as a Catechist or Catechist Assistant

The catechist must be a practicing Catholic who is faithful to and living a lifestyle consistent with the teachings of the Catholic Church. Personal prayer life is fundamentally important in the life of the Catechist. This is fostered through regular Mass attendance, reception of the Sacraments, daily prayer, scripture reading and participation in retreat opportunities.

A good catechist is:

1. Caring/Loving Above all, a catechist must be caring. The catechist must see each student as unique, valuable, lovable and worthy of unconditional love. Catechists reveal Christ's love most meaningfully through their own love.

2. Reverent/Respectful Good catechists approach each individual with reverence. They respect the dignity and rights, the gift, and the fragility of each student. The good catechist desires to draw out the best that often lies hidden.

3. Committed/Faithful Good catechists sincerely work at growing in their commitment to Jesus Christ as they grapple with life's mysteries and challenges. They are prayerful.

4. Understanding/Approachable Good catechists work at being understanding and approachable, accepting and tolerant, while witnessing honestly to the Church's teachings and their own convictions and values.

5. Open/Questioning Effective catechists tend to wonder at the mysteries of life. They are open to change and to new possibilities and ways of doing things, while respecting the Church's tradition and their own past experience.

6. Creative Good catechists continually use poetry, story, music, art and beauty of all kinds, as well as activities that stimulate their own and their students' imaginations.

7. Enthusiastic Good catechists convey a sense of excitement and enthusiasm about the "Good News" of Jesus Christ, which they value and wish to share with others.

8. Persevering Good catechists tend to be willing to evaluate and try anew. They are able to cope with difficulties and frustration. They believe in the commitment they have made, and they don't give up in hard times.

9. Happy/Smiling A catechist's smile says without words that he or she finds joy in Christ and Christ's way, even when experiencing life’s inevitable hurts.

10. Sense of humor So many unexpected and incongruous things happen in life that a sense of humor is often necessary to cope with the situation at hand.

BENEFITS OF BEING A CATECHIST* The benefits of teaching a catechism class are many:

1. Catechists receive prayers from the parish for strength and courage to carry out the work of Jesus Christ.

2. Teaching strengthens the catechist's own faith in Christ and His Church. The lessons you present on a child's level reinforce your own understanding of the faith and help you to appreciate it more.

3. Catechists are abundantly blessed by God, who is never outdone in generosity.

4. A catechist becomes a part of a wonderful community of other teachers who are growing in their faith and learning to share it with others.

*These thoughts are taken from the book Questions Catechists Ask and Answers that Really Work by Carl J. Pfeifer and Janaan Manternach

Code of ConductOur children are the most important gifts God has entrusted to us. As a volunteer, I promise to strictly follow the rules and guidelines in this Volunteer’s Code of Conduct as a condition of my providing services to the children and youth of our parish.

As a volunteer, I will: Treat everyone with respect, loyalty, patience, integrity, courtesy, dignity, and

consideration. Avoid situations where I am alone with children and/or youth at Church activities. Use positive reinforcement rather than criticism, competition, or comparison when

working with children and/or youth. Refuse to accept expensive gifts from children and/or youth or their parents without prior

written approval from the pastor or administrator. Report suspected abuse to the pastor, administrator, or appropriate supervisor local

authorities. I understand that failure to report suspected abuse to civil authorities is, according to the law, a misdemeanor.

Cooperate fully in any investigation of abuse of children and/or youth.

As a volunteer, I will not: Smoke or use tobacco products in the presence of children and/or youth. Use, possess, or be under the influence of alcohol at any time while volunteering. Use, possess, or be under the influence of illegal drugs at any time. Pose any health risk to children and/or youth (i.e., no fevers or other contagious

situations). Strike, spank, shake, or slap children and/or youth. Humiliate, ridicule, threaten, or degrade children and/or youth. Touch a child and/or youth in a sexual or other inappropriate manner. Use any discipline that frightens or humiliates children and/or youth. Use profanity in the presence of children and/or youth. I understand that as a volunteer working with children and/or youth, I am subject to a

thorough background check including criminal history. I understand that any action inconsistent with this Code of Conduct or failure to take action mandated by this Code of Conduct may result in my removal as a volunteer with children and/or youth.

At all times, discipline is to be conducted according to gospel values and with the dignity of the student and the general welfare of the parish community in mind.

Catechist Formation All Catechists in a Diocesan Catholic school or parish setting who teach religion, even if they work as part-time catechists or are volunteer catechists, must complete Level I and Level II Catechist Certification requirements. The Level I certificate should be earned within the first two (2) years of engagement. The Catechist should complete Level II within (5) years.

All school or parish Catechists, after the completion of their required level, maintain their certification by completing 30 hours of continuing faith formation to be submitted every three (3) years to the Office of Christian Formation. (OCF)

The Philosophy

The Catechist Certification Program in the Diocese of St. Augustine was developed to assist catechists (religious educators) who have heard God’s call to share the Gospel with others. In order to be effective in this ministry, the catechist must understand, love, live and proclaim the Christian message with enthusiasm and a sense of conviction. This proclamation of the Gospel in the parish community strives to lead students to a deepening knowledge about the faith, a greater participation in the liturgy, a prayerful connection to their God and a dedication to service to others.

The Purpose

The Catechist Certification Program:

Provides opportunities for the spiritual growth of the catechist. Provides an increase in the theological knowledge of the catechist. Provides opportunities for the catechist to expand their skills in teaching.

The Program

The Catechist Certification Program is currently divided into two parts. The first level of formation consists of 20 hours of basic formation in the areas of: Scripture, Sacraments and Liturgy, Basic Beliefs, Church as well as skills classes: the Role of the Catechist, Administrative/Legal and Practical Skills.

Class Descriptions:

Role of the Catechist: An overview of effective ways for Catechists to share the Gospel with students and families Practical Skills: An exploration of the best methods for developing knowledge of the Faith in students Scripture: An overview of both the Old and New Testaments with application for daily life

Liturgy & Sacraments: An overview of the sacramental life of the Church and examines communal and personal prayer. Formerly known as Prayer: Personal/ Liturgical Basic Beliefs: An overview of the whole Creed and an in-depth examination of a specific area professed in the Creed Faith Development: An examination of the stages of both moral and faith development Administrative/Legal: An overview of the various legal and ethical concerns of Church ministers today.

Catechist Certification Level II course information is available through the Office of Christian Formation. The Searchlight Virtual School, or the Satellite Theological Education program (STEP) course package from Notre Dame University designed for the Diocese of St. Augustine are viable options to complete Level II. Ten (10) hours of in-depth instruction in each of the following content areas completes this level: Scripture, Church History, Morality, Sacraments, Prayer, and Basic Beliefs. Objectives for each course are available on the www.dosaformation.org website. Workshops/Classes for completion of both Levels I and III will be offered by the Office of Christian Formation quarterly.

Why Catechist Certification?

The Ministry of Catechesis (National Directory for Catechesis, USCCB, section 55)

“Programs of formation should be designed to help them (catechists) acquire the knowledge

and skills they need to hand on the faith to those entrusted to their care and assist them in

living as Disciples of Christ.”

“Like all Christians, catechists are called to continual conversion, and growth in their faith,

and, for this reason, are called to ongoing spiritual formation.”

“Since effective catechesis depends on virtuous and skilled catechists, their ongoing

formation should enhance the human, spiritual and apostolic qualities and catechetical skills

they bring to their ministry.”

We will make every effort to notify catechists of yearly training opportunities. For the most up-to-date information please visit: http://www.dosaformation.com/registrations

behavior We commit to thoughtful acts of appreciation throughout the year We recognize that we are all part of the faith formation and education of the children in

our care

May God Bless You in Your Service!

Strategies for different age levels

• Young learners absorb material well through movement, handling objects, singing, and so on. Involve primary age children in processions, such as placing the Bible on the prayer table before breaking open the Word. Use Bible stories, symbolic objects, liturgical music, gestures, and visuals to help them enter into the mystery of Jesus. Involve them in simple, hands-on seasonal activities.

• Intermediate-age children like to explore. After obtaining the necessary permissions, take the learners for a tour of the parish church. Help them become familiar and comfortable with each space. Or have them experience a liturgy, and later revisit it by pointing out the various elements of the experience. Discuss the symbolism of the various liturgical colors.

• Middle-school learners like to work in small groups and to do research. For example, they might prepare banners for your parish Church or teaching space. They can look up the history of feasts, seasons, and traditions, as well as the development of the liturgy. Let them choose a project they are interested in.

• Invite youth, high school students, adults, and the participants in intergenerational gatherings to form groups as families and individuals. You might have them take part in faith sharing based on the Question of the Week and the Sunday gospel. Celebrate with them the holy days, solemnities, and particularly the Triduum in meaningful ways. Have them prepare prayer services or rituals for the various seasons. Arrange learning centers with liturgical themes.

The Copyright Law

*A complete copy of the Copyright Law of 1976 and further information regarding the Copyright Law may be obtained by writing: The Copyright Office, Library of Congress, Washington, DC 20559.

GUIDELINES FOR USE OF COPYRIGHTED MUSIC MATERIAL

1. What does “copyright” mean? Our nation’s founding fathers determined that it was in the public interest that the creative works of a person’s mind and spirit should belong, for a limited time, to the creator. The protection of these works is called “copyright.” The United States Copyright Law grants to any copyright owner the exclusive rights to original material for a term which is equal to the length of the life of the author/creator plus 75 years. (For many songs written prior to 1978, the term is 75 years.) The copyright owner is the only one who has the privilege of reproducing the work. If any other party wants to reproduce the material in some manner, permission must be obtained from the copyright owner. Visible notice of copyright should appear on all copies of copyrighted music. Whether on the owner’s original works or on permitted copies, the notice should be visible and contain the word “copyright” or the symbol c (for printed material) or R (for sound recordings), the year of first publication and the name of the copyright owner.

2. What are the rights of copyright owners?2.1 To reproduce the copyrighted work in printed copies or on records, tapes, video cassettes or any duplicating process now know or which later comes into being.2.2 To make arrangements and adaptations of that copyrighted work.2.3 To distribute and/or sell printed or recorded copies of the work or to license others to do so.2.4 To perform the copyrighted work.2.5 To display the copyrighted work.

3. Who owns the legal right to make copies? The original creators (authors and composers) and/or publishers, assigned agents, etc.

4. Do other countries have copyright laws?Yes, most of the world now seems to recognize the need to give incentive and protection to creative persons. Copyrighted material owned by United States citizens is protected in many countries.

5. What if I’m faced with a special situation? If you want to include copyrighted lyrics in a song sheet, arrange a copyrighted song for four baritones and kazoo, or make any special use of copyrighted music which the publisher cannot supply in regular published form, the magic word is ASK. You may or may not receive permission, but when you use someone else’s property you must have the property owner’s consent.

6. What if there’s not time to write?

22

Page 23: Religious Education Schedules 2017-18 · Web view3. Catechists are abundantly blessed by God, who is never outdone in generosity. 4. A catechist becomes a part of a wonderful community

Think of copyrighted music as a piece of property, and you’ll be on the right track. Plan ahead. Some pub lishers routinely grant permissions over the phone.

7. What about photocopies or tapes that are now in our church?Immediately destroy any unauthorized photocopies, tapes, etc., and replace them with legal editions. Possession of any illegal copies put s you in the position of harboring stolen goods.

8. Is it permissible to: Make a photocopy of a copyrighted work for my accompanist in order to sing a solo? Print words only of a copyrighted work on a one-time basis for uses such as church

bulletins or song sheets? Print a songbook or song sheets containing copyrighted works and use them in churches,

Bible studies or home prayer groups as long as they are not sold? Make a transparency or slide of a copyrighted work for use by projector? Make copies of copyrighted music first and then ask permission?

NO. Permission must be secured prior to any such uses and/or duplications.

9. What if I can’t find the owner of a copyrighted song? Can I go ahead and use it without permission? No. Check the copyright no tice on the work, and/or check with the publisher of the collection in which the work appears. Once you know the name of the copyright owner, write or call the Church Music Publishers Association, P.O. Box 158992, Nashville, TN 37215; 615-791-0273. For a cost of $2, C.M.P.A. will supply a current listing of major sacred music copyright holders/publishers. Please send cash; C.M.P.A. cannot invoice.

10. But what about items that are out of print? Most publishers are agreeable, under special circumstances, to all reprinting of out-of-print items; but again, permission must be secured from the copyright owner prior to any duplication.

11. What is public domain? If a song is in the public domain (PD), the copyright protection for the song has expired and the song is dedicated to the public for use as it sees fit with no permission being required from anyone. The absence of a copyright notice (see question 1) is one indication that a song may be PD.

12. What is fair use?Fair use is not generally available to churches. It is a doctrine developed by the courts that permits portions of copyrighted works to be reproduced legally for purposes of criticism, comment, news reporting, classroom teaching, scholarship and research. In no instance does this apply to a performance. The various interest groups involved have agreed upon guidelines which constitute the minimum and not the maximum standards of educational fair use. If you are interested in a copy of these guidelines, please contact C.M.P.A., P.O. Box 158992, Nashville, TN 37215, and enclose a self-addressed stamped 6x9 envelope ($.53 postage) with your request.

13. Is it permissible to perform copyrighted religious works in church?Yes. You may perform copyrighted religious works from legal editions in the course of services at places of worship or at religious assemblies. Legal editions do not result from unauthorized duplications of religious works, but to purchase one copy of religious sheet music, then make 30 copies for the choir without permission and then perform it in worship service is not legal or ethical.

14. Can I make an original recording of a copyrighted song?Yes, but you must secure a recording license from the copyright owner, and pay, effective January 1, 1988, a royalty of 5-1/4 cents per song, per record or tape manufactured. (This rate increases every two years.) This includes copies of recordings or tapes of church services, concerts, musicals or any programs that include copyrighted music.

15. Can I make a record or tape using a prerecorded instrumental accompaniment track?Yes, provided you have permission. Two different permissions are necessary in this situation. The first is from the copyright owner of the selection to be recorded (see question 13), and the second is from the producer/manufacturer of the accompaniment track. Fees are usually required for each permission.

16. Is it permissible to make duplicates of the tape that accompanies a musical or printed work for “learning” or “rehearsal” purposes? No, it is illegal. As good as an idea as this is, and as helpful as it would be to teach the music to members of the choir, it is against the law without permission. Write or call the publisher of the music. They will usually work with you concerning your request.

17. If I buy a record, is it permissible to make a copy for a friend?Duplication of copyrighted materials is against the law when the purpose is to avoid a legal purchase.

18. What are the penalties for making unauthorized copies of copyrighted music?Embarrassment is the first. Additionally, the law provides for the owner off a copyright to recover damages for unauthorized use of copyrighted music. These damages include the profits of the infringer and statutory damages ranging from not less than $250 to not more than $50,000 per infringement. In addition, prison terms are provided for will (i.e., you knew what you were doing was wrong!) and commercial infringement. Remember, churches, schools and not-for-profit organizations can be infringers too!

19. What about photocopiers who don’t “get caught”?Frankly, we cannot imagine what kind of school, church or professional musician would derive satisfaction from doing something illegal. They force the price of legal editions higher. They risk embarrassment from professional colleagues who understand the laws. They risk fines and jail sentences if taken to court. Plainly stated, the making of unauthorized copies of all copyrighted material is strictly illegal. However, all music publishers desire to have their songs used in as many ways as possible; so in some cases, permission can be obtained. You must contact the copyright owner prior to use or duplication.

The Diocese of St. Augustine strongly upholds the copyright laws of the United States and of other countries. All persons within the Diocese must adhere to these laws. If there are any questions concerning copyrights, contact the Office of Faith Formation. Always ASK, before using music, tapes, words, etc. It is against the law to do otherwise.
