IntroducAon

The  goal  of  this  presenta0on  is  to  allow  each  official  an  opportunity  to  develop  a  personal  plan  of  a8ack  which  will  help  allow  you  to  become  a  “PROFESSIONAL”  referee.

Professional  does  not  elude  to  the  level  of  game  your  working,  but  rather  the  manner  in  which  you  work  each  game.

Becoming  a  professional  referee  means  you  have  a  total  level  of  awareness  involving  all  aspects  of  the  game,  moving  beyond  refereeing  without  a  plan,  and  calling  plays  with  reckless  abundance.

“YOUR”  Plan-‐  Play-‐Calling  You  must  have  a  plan  in  regard  to  calling  plays,  without  a  plan  there  is

no  consistency….

“YOUR”  plan  should  include  these  basic  fundamentals:  -‐  I’m  never  going  to  blow  out  of  primary  with  a  closed  look,  trust  your

partner  -‐  When  I  blow  in  secondary,  it  will  be  a  strike  with  an  open  look  -‐  Low  secondary  whistle  count  =  High  total  accuracy  -‐  High  secondary  whistle  count  =  Low  total  accuracy  -‐  Take  care  of  True  &  False  to  avoid  mulFple  choice  (grey  plays)

Page 12: Refereeing With A Plan NCOAncoa.arbitersports.com/Groups/107475/Library/files... · IntroducAon!The!goal!of!this!presenta0on!is!to!allow!each!official!an! opportunity!to!develop!a!personal!plan!of!a8ack!which!will!

“YOUR”  Plan-‐  Play-‐Calling  Marginal  plays  are  not  part  of  “YOUR”  plan,  however  it  is  important  to

know  the  consequences  of  those  whistles  as  part  of  your  overall  awareness  to  make  your  plan  successful….

In  your  plan  you  should  be  aware  of  the  LANDMINES:    1)  Marginal  plays  on  impact  players    2)  Marginal  plays  at  key  points  in  games    3)  Marginal  plays  in  lopsided  scenarios    4)  Marginal  plays  coming  out  of  my  primary

Marginal  POE’s  with  high  impact  will  always  lead  to  problems,  expect  pushback!

If  your  catching  crap  from  what  your  calling,  stop  calling  it!

Page 13: Refereeing With A Plan NCOAncoa.arbitersports.com/Groups/107475/Library/files... · IntroducAon!The!goal!of!this!presenta0on!is!to!allow!each!official!an! opportunity!to!develop!a!personal!plan!of!a8ack!which!will!

“YOUR”  Plan-‐  Play-‐Calling  The  understanding  of  black/white  plays  vs.  grey  plays  must  be  part  of  “YOUR”  plan,  the

ability  to  referee  grey  plays  will  separate  you  in  your  plan  and  journey,  the  use  of  our  “WEAPONS”  must  be  part  of  “YOUR”  plan,  understand  50/50  plays  and  the  impact  ….

Using  our  “WEAPONS”  will  allow  us  to  ensure  we  are  effecFve  and  efficient  with  grey  area  plays….We  have  24  weapons  in  a  college  and  high  school  game  and  32  in  professional  basketball,  always  know  team  fouls  and  penalty/bonus….it  slows  your  whistle  down!

“WEAPONS”  =  Whistles  that  do  not  lead  to  bonus/penalty  free-‐throws

NCAA/  High  School  =  6  per  team,  12  per  half  ,  24  per  game

Professional  Basketball  =  4  per  team,  8  per  quarter,  16  per  half,  32  per  game

Marginal  plays  are  not  effecFve  use  of  our  weapons,  avoid  wasFng  our  weapons  and  instead  use  them  to  help  our  game….That’s  “YOUR”  plan!

“YOUR”  Plan-‐  Play-‐Calling  To  avoid  marginal  plays  we  are  going  to  incorporate  some  play-‐calling

principals  that  will  be  a  part  of  you  “YOUR”  plan,  these  guidelines  will  become  who  you  are  and  what  you  do….            -‐  More  immediate  whistle  above  free-‐throw  line    -‐  More  processed,  slow  whistle  below  free-‐throw  line    -‐  Be  slow  on  rebounding  plays,  possession  consequence/clean-‐up    -‐  Be  slow  around  boundary  lines,  foul  vs.  marginal  vs.  out  of  bounds    -‐  Off  Ball  =  Zero  tolerance,  clean  up  FOM    -‐  Off  Ball  and  unsure  =  Blow,  On  Ball  and  unsure  =  Hold  whistle
