A MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT

John W. McGuire Superintendent of Schools

Welcome to the 2007-2008 school year at Greenwich Central School! As a result of community support to our recent Capital Project, and following a busy summer of renovation work, we have opened school this September with our buildings and grounds in their best ever condition. Thank you for your support to the maintenance and enhancement of our educational facilities. Please join us on Homecoming Weekend, October 11th – 13th, to participate in special events and tour our schools. In this edition of our newsletter, you will find information about Homecoming, along with an introduction of our newest faculty members, an update on the STAR program, and other items of interest. As we enthusiastically enter this new school year, it is also good to reflect on the successes of our students, whose learning and achievement are at the heart of our mission, and to recall that earlier this year Richard Mills, New York State Commissioner of Education, designated Greenwich Central School as a “High Performing – Gap Closing School District.” We are proud of this recognition, even as we rededicate ourselves to the continuous improvement of our efforts on behalf of our students and the community we serve. Have a great school year!

“Through commitment to scholarship, character and community, we prepare our students to take charge of their

lives and benefit the world.”

The State has asked school districts to make homeowners aware of the details of the new Middle Class rebate program. This was negotiated in the State budget process, and has some differences from the rebate checks that were sent to homeowners last year. Everyone who receives the basic STAR exemption should have received a letter from New York State explaining what they must do to receive a check from the State. The letter includes a property code that identifies the resident as a STAR recipient. An application must be filed, either on paper or on line, that links the property code with social security numbers and income tax returns for 2005. For Greenwich STAR recipients, the rebate will be over $400 for those with incomes of less than $90,000. There are two higher income categories that qualify for lower rebate amounts. The web address is www.nystax.gov for those with questions about this program. Applications must be filed by November 30, 2007.

A n exciting new program began this fall at Greenwich Elementary School. It’s called Morning Program! On the first day of each

week, all K-2 students and staff meet in the gymnasium to build community within the school by targeting Character Education. Each month a particular grade leads discussions and productions involving 13 different character traits. These traits include: responsibility, compassion, caring, self control, generosity, individuality, honesty, trustworthiness, cooperation, respect, fairness, sportsmanship and patriotism. At the end of each month, students that display these traits are honored with certificates and a celebration. Morning Program is open to everyone and begins at 8:30 on the first school day of each week.

Welcome to morning program!

A MESSAGE FROM THE INTERIM SUPERINTENDENT

I t has been my pleasure to be working with the Greenwich School community over the past two months as Interim Superintendent. I have been most impressed with numerous student accomplishments including the

Egyptian exhibit in sixth grade, musical performances, Elementary Morning Program revolving around character issues, twenty five high school students being inducted into the National Honor Society, State Championship Girls Cross Country and much more. You should be very proud of the Greenwich students. Also, the staff is most professional and dedicated in assisting our students to reach their potential. At the Superintendents’ Day in November, teachers spent time working in Learning Communities sharing and focusing on the best instructional practices. The CSEA staff had excellent workshops on the special education process and a session on successful business practices emulating Pike’s Fish Company in Seattle, Washington. This energy invested in self growth helps demonstrate the quality of our staff. We have two important issues to accomplish together in the next six months. One is to find the best leader to serve your schools as Superintendent. The second is to also develop a fiscally responsible budget providing the highest quality instruction for our students. I invite you to attend our budget meetings and to participate in the sessions designed for community input in our Superintendent search process. Please feel free to contact me on these issues or other important educational items. Sherman Parker Interim Superintendent of Schools

A s indicated in my message from the Superintendent, on February 12, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. starting in the High School Auditorium a focus group activity will be held

with members of the community. The purpose of the evening session will be for the development of the characteristics profile of the prospective Greenwich Superintendent of Schools. Groups of stakeholders will include student groups, community members and parents of current students, staff groups from the district and administration. The groups will meet in separate rooms to consider the following questions. * What are the strengths of the Greenwich Central School community? * What might be the areas of improvement for the next school system? * What are the desired characteristics of the next Superintendent? The results will be used by the Board of Education to develop interview questions and determine skills necessary for the next Superintendent. In April through the middle of May, representatives of all constituent groups will be invited to participate in the interview process. This involvement will assist the Board of Education in selection the next Superintendent. Please be vigilant for exact dates so we can get strong involvement in this process.

C ongratulations to the Girls Cross Country Team for winning a second straight Class C State Cross-Country Championship on

Saturday, November 10th, at Norwood-Norfolk High School. The Witches were the most dominant team of all classes, boys and girls, placing four runners in the top five of one hundred and thirty-one run-ners. Nationally, the Witches’ final ranking was #13 (there are approxi-mately 37,000 High Schools in America). The Witches have once again been named a New York State Public High School Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete award winner for having a team grade point average over 90. Hard work may be their mantra, but they are also a happy, fun-loving group. M r. Daniel Fischer, Junior and Senior High Technology teacher and the Junior High FFA advisor and Mrs. Audrey Fischer, Third Grade teacher were awarded a grant through the New York Agriculture in the

Classroom Bluebird Project. The main goals of the NYAITYC’s project are to increase an appreciation and understanding of agriculture, the local food system and the environment by getting students involved in learning about bluebirds, building boxes and partnering with a local farmer. Another goal is to establish “outdoor classrooms” that provide community connections and help educators meet New York State Learning Standards.

Mr. Fischer’s Eighth Grade Technology students designed bluebird boxes using solid modeling CAD software and then cut out all necessary wood pieces to create “kits” for his FFA students to assemble cooperatively with the Third graders.

On November 29, 2007, after several weeks of classroom instruction on the Eastern Bluebird as New York’s State bird, its habitats and conservation awareness, the third graders walked to the High School to hear a presentation given by Mr. Gerald Barnhart, a former NY State Director of Fish, Wildlife and Marine Resources. Following the presentation, the children eagerly donned their safety glasses and got to work hammering and drilling with the help of the Junior High FFA students. The three year grant will enable cooperative groups to travel to a local farm to create a bluebird trail with the boxes and conduct field research.

T he Sixth Grade students in Mrs. Aidala, Miss Mugits,

Mrs. Rasmussen and Mrs. Records’ classes held four bake sales between Thanksgiving and Holiday break. All items are priced at $.25 each. This year the students raised over $400, all of which was donated to Operation Santa Claus. This has been a sixth grade community service project for two decades.

Greenwich FFA recently helped to organize Breakfast with Santa, a community event where children could meet Santa Claus. Over 30 FFA members, along with volunteers from FBLA, FCCLA, and Student Council, helped out with various activities during the breakfast. Volunteers helped by serving breakfast and making arts and crafts with the children. FFA members hosted what has come to be known as “the World’s Coldest Hayride”. Members also sold wreaths and center pieces that were made during Plant Science and Ag Science classes. The money made by the FFA was donated to Operation Rudolf. These students truly displayed commitment to their community and we are proud of their efforts.

O n Thursday, December 20, 2007, the Greenwich Elementary First Grade Classes visited the Greenwich Free

Library. The trip was a culminating activity to a Special Giving Project by the First Graders and correlated with the Character trait for the month of December—Generosity. Instead of a grab bag gift, students selected and purchased a new children’s book to donate to the Library. For each book donated, a book plate was placed inside the book with the child’s name as the book donor. The bookplates were purchased and donated to the First Grade teachers by Tom and Terry Butler. This is the third year of this special project. Last year all books were donated to the Easton Town Library. While at the library the students enjoyed holiday stories read and toured the library. We all learned about and experienced the wonderful feeling of giving to others and to our community!

W ith the entry of 2008, we come to the half way point of the 07-08 fiscal

year. Unlike the State, our revenues are on track with our projections. Our expenses are coming in much better than last year, except for the already well publicized cost of fuel. Most of the new initiatives that were developed last year have been successful so far. Our new GED class has produced a graduate already, with several others close behind. The new Chinese class has been well received by the students. At this point we are preparing a draft budget which will be used throughout the spring. There are many areas to look for potential improvements in 2008-09. We are planning to replace three buses which have been in service for many years. Also under consideration is a landscaping plan that will improve the quality of our athletic fields. We are looking for the most efficient way to provide graphing calculators to our high school students. Our experience with smart boards has been positive, so more of these will be considered. The major work of the building project has been completed and paid for. No one has asked for the fencing to come back. There is still some money left to be used for capital improvement purposes, and we hope to upgrade our computer network. I look forward to communicating our progress as the 2008-09 budget takes shape. The dates for budget meetings are in a separate article. If you have input, please contact me.
