It is with a sense of tremendous joy that I convey this message to Swaraj Sporting Club. And with this same joy, I recall the Sundays we spent travelling to the various cricket venues on the train or in Govindbhai’s truck. No doubt, that the present generation miss this type of adventure.
As a past official, I salute the present officials for their foresight and dedication.ea
My homage to the stalwarts, Mr Jerambhai Vallabh Patel and Mr Jerambhai Vallabh, who are not with us today. Also thank-you to Mr
Dayal Ukabhai and Mr Changanbhai Bhana for their dedication to the club.
My appeal to the present club officials and members is to cherish and respect the high ideals and tradition of our elders.
Like them have courage, vision, integrity, sincerity and steadfastness in the pursuit of goals.
Life is the gift of nature, but sportsmanship and character is the gift of wisdom.
May our club grow from strength to strength.

IT is with pride and jubilation that I extend my heartiest congratulations to Swaraj Sporting Club, on reaching the golden mile-stone.
To survive for five decades, and to be still active in soccer and cricket is no mean feat. It shows that you have imparted this healthy ideal into the succeeding young generation, which is a sound investment. To all these officials and members, I would like to say, “Your dedication, com- niitment, sincerity and vision has rnade this miracle happen .”
Lest I forget, that behind every successful club, there are ladies, the proud housewives, mothers and sisters, who keep the home fires burning while the men are attending meetings.
=Chhagan BhanaThe hands that rock the cradle, also rock the sports arena. With deep respect and gratitude, I salute the noble ladies.
To all the officials and members of Swaraj Sporting Club I have genuine admiration and respect, for spending countless hours of your time for the club, and for providing a healthy avenue for the youngsters. Beyond the sphere of sports, you have assisted persons that needed your help and advice - please carry on in the
same vain. I sincerely hope, that they emulate you. Wishing Swaraj Sporting Club another fifty years, after your merger with Azad Cricket Club, so as to become a centurion.
Naranbhai Ranchod MangaOn this momentous occasion, I am privileged to be associated with the club. I have fond memories of my playing days with the club. The friendship we developed has lasted forever. I must congratulate the younger generation for carrying the club to this milestone. I wish the club great success in it’s future plans to merge with Azad Cricket Club and to develop a common sports facility. I hope you will grow from strength to strength.

Namaste.IT gives me immense joy and a profound sense of honour to pen a message of goodwill on the occasion o f the Golden Anniversary of Swaraj Sporting Club.
It is also rewarding for me to note that its officials have trailed me down after 50 years as its Chairperson at its inception.
After the inception of Swaraj Sporting Club, the inspiration and experience gained thereby led to the inception of the Bethal Navyuk League in 1969, o f which I had the privilege and honour to be its first chairperson.
It is with great acknowledgement to celebrate the organisations Golden Anniversary reminding us of the trails and it has traversed in a challenging and competitive sporting world and to have emerged as a reputable sporting club. For this I must congratulate and compliment its past and present officials and members for their
dedicated and tireless services.I hereby take this opportunity to com
pliment my colleagues and founder members Jerambhai Vallabh, the dynamic secretary, Diarbhai Ooka, the able treasurer and
other members Ramjeebhai Lakha, Ramdev Vallabh Bhaga, Chaganbhai Bhana, Jerambhcii Vallabh and Diarbhai Master for their services and support at the inception of this sporting club.
J | It is my humble prayer that“Swaraj” in the New South Africa will produce professional sportsmen, an opportunity denied in over a century, and in so doing uphold the spirit of unity and brotherhood in the
democratisation of the New South Africa. In conclusion, it is my fervent wish that
“Swaraj” Sporting Club will grow from strength to strength and may the Lord grant its members robust health and long life, and instill a true culture of sportsmanship for the next 50 years.
Hari-Om-Tat-Sat
Dayal Ukabbaif i f t y years is a long time in the history of any sporting club. I am deeply honoured to have been a past member of the club and to have served as an administrator in the formation o f the club.
It was also an honour to have Worked with proficient administrators o f the calibre of Jerambhai Vallabh Patel and Jerambhai Vallabh.
It is also noteworthy that Gandabhai Dayal and Walter Muller, who were responsible for starting the junior
structures for the club and to have dedicated many hours to their upliftment.
May the club continue with the magnificent work it has done for the community.
The existence of the club during turbulent times is a remarkable feat and we have the current members and administrators to thank.
I wish them all the success for the future.

WITH COMPLIMENTS
FROM
A Can of the
IN 1948 Mr. A.J. Albertyn, a senior Vice President of the South African Football Association, the “Coloured” organisation, came from Cape Town arxl in Johannesburg, addressed a meeting of the nationd African Football Association.
The topic was the intention to establish a federation of football associations in South Africa. It should be mentioned that all associations had been or were being approached including the “white” body.
In order to promote the idea a friendly match Was arranged in Cape Town in 1950 between the Coloureds and the Africans. After the match accredited representatives of the Coloured and African associations met at the residence of Councillor W D Collins for further discussions. The Indian association was not represented. They Were inwted but their organisation had not yet met to discuss the matter.
The meeting resolved, formally, that a federation be formed. D R Twala was elected pro-tem president with A J Albertyn as Secretary pro-tem. The name of the intended federation was decided upon. It was the Federation of South African Football Associations.
The next meeting was held in Johannesburg in the 25 March 1951. The following representatives were present:-
For the Coloureds: HC Maggott, H J Lamb, J A Van Harte, J Barnard.
For the Africans: F J Modibedi, H H Zibi, L C Koza.
For the Indians: S L Singh, Geo Singh, W Ernest, B Pavadai, Rev B L E Sigamoney
The acting president D R Twala and the secretary A J Albertyn were also present.
The Question of the South African Bantu Association was also discussed as they were absent.
This association had been formed in 1933. Instead of joining the three associations mentioned above in the Federation, they were busy building what was originally called a “working relationship between Black and white Football.”
This occurred at first at district level and entailed the development in the administrative
: The Formation o f the SA Soccer Federation
skills of officials and the promotion of junior football. Eventually it led to what the Bantu association termed as the two bodies “firding” each other at national level and co-operating in terms of an agreement referred to as the Top Level Agreement signed in January 1962.
Later the Bantu Association accepted subservient membership of the white-controlled Football Association of South Africa (FASA). They continued to be members of FASA during the years when efforts were made to expel FASA from FIFA for practising racial discrimination.
In fact officials of the South African Bantu Association accompanied FASA delegations overseas to “prove” by their presence in the delegation that FASA was in fact a non-racial organisation and therefore entitled to be members of FIFA.
Federation was launched formally on the 30 September 1951 at a meeting held in Durban. A Goodwill football tournament involving representative teams from the Coloured, Indian ard African associations was arranged for the same time. The following delegates attended the meetings :-
SA Indians: S L Singh, M John, A Chriistopher, Geo Singh, A Harry Nadoo, S Ernest, W Ernest, B D Pavadai, A Anthony, Rev B L E Sigamoney.
SA Coloureds: H C Maggott, H J Lamb, J A van Harte, W D Collins, E G Rooks, Lucioli, G. Montgomery.
SA Africans: R Ngcobo, L K Ntlabati, J Modibedi.
The first officials of the South African Soccer Federation were:
Presdent: S L Singh.Vice-Presidents: Adv Christopher, E G Rooks,
R Ngcobo.Secretary: Geo SinghHonorary Treasurer: A Harry Naidoo with
Wolpert and Abrahams as Honorary Auditors. To quote the official souvenir brochure issued
at the time: “This brought to a close the protracted negotiations of three years.”

Although the Federation had only been formed in 1951 football had been played in Durban and Cape Town in 1890 already.
The game is thought to have been brought to South Africa by sailors, hence it started in the port cities.
In 1898 inter-city matches were taking place between Durban and Pietermaritzburg. In 1898 the Orange Free State Bantu Soccer Club was in existence in the Free State. It is claimed that this team under J B Twayi undertook a \ sit to En- Slarid. If this is so then it was the first South African team to leave the shores of the country.
In Cape Town competitive matches between clubs affiliated to the Western Province Board Were first played in 1904.
TTie Coloured Association was established in 1933 as a national body with Western Province, Natal, Transvaal, and Griqualand West.
The South African African Football Association was originally part of the SA Bantu Association. The organisation was split for various reasons, one of them said to be ethnicity. The South African Indian Football Association was established in 1903 at a meeting held in Kimberley. Three centres originally, Transvaal, Natal and Griqualand West. The Eastern Province affiliated in 1920. A representative team toured India in 1922 for three months. In 1934 the Association brought the All-India team to South Africa. The players played barefoot football of a high standard winning all their matches most by a margin of six goals or more.

Sports in our CommunityAS I reminisce of an era long past, I think of my sporting days in the 50s. It was a period of interest versus facilities. Lack of sporting facili- fies did not deter us from teiking part in soccer matches. Long distances had to be travelled to play one-and-a-half hour matches. At the end of the day, we were richer for the experience.
Today, it is facilities versus interest. Playing fields are at our doorsteps but children, today, 3re distracted by television and video games.
One needs to remember that “a sound mind in a sound body” is relevant today more than ever before. I am proud to say that Swaraj Sporting Club provides the opportunity to create a sourd body and mind through their stringent training programmes.
Unfortunately, the officials are fully stretched and far greater interest needs to be shown by parents. It is not enough for parents to leave their children on the grourds and expect officials of the club to run the “show”. Parents need to sperd quality time on and off the field with their children. Motivation is the key to success. Standing with folded arms on
the sdelines will not do! Swaraj Sporting Club also pro\^es an opportunity for parents of these young players to form life-long bords when they meet on the sport grourds.
Destiny, fuelled by the old aparthed laws, created a vacuum in the lives of communities that were split from areas which they had occupied for decades.
Once again, Swaraj Sporting had the vision to create opportunities by organising league matches for youngsters who, otherwise, woud hav»e hung arourd in game arcades.
Swaraj Sjxjrting is a non-racist sp>orting club dedicated to serving the sporting needs of the communities.
On this 50th anniversary, I wish to congratulate the club for it’s fine work. Behind the success of this club is a bard of loyal ard hardworking professionals, businessmen ard parents. Your great efforts are noted by all the people you serve.

Jairambhai Vallabh Bhagoon 4/12/1926 - 20/9 /1987
Jairambhai Vallabh Bhagoon was bom on the 4 November 1926 in India. He arrived in South Africa at a very young age of sbc in 1932. His two elder brothers predeceased him, and thus made him the eldest in the family o f six.
He attended Ferreira Town Primary School when he passed standard 5 he was forced to leave school to join the family business at the famous comer o f Fox and Albrecth Streets in Jeppe. This was to be head quarters and the hive o f activity of most of his colleagues
Deprived of a higher education and knowing that education was the key ingredient for success, he took it upon himself to continue studying through correspondence.
He eventually matriculated and joined the Dale Camigie Institute, doing courses in effective speaking, interpersonal relationships and communication skills. He studied accounting on a part-time basis.
He further ensured that his younger brother Narsi Bhagoon had the opportunity to pass his matric. Not accepted at the medical school at the University of Witwatersrand, he therefore enrolled his brother at the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin. Narsi passed the entrance exams and was accepted, subsequently qualifying as medical doctor.
His commitment towards higher education for his children, was also important to him. His late son Prakash followed in the footsteps of his uncle Narsi to complete his medical degree in Dublin.
His daughter Priti qualified as a medical doctor from the University o f Witwatersrand Medical School. His other two sons Herment and Dillip also graduated as medical doctors from the University o f Natal.
Pragna their youngest daughter completed her BSc degree at the University o f Witwatersrand. He was always ably supported by his wife Shantiben and eldest daughter Parimala.
He joined Continental Wholesalers as a traveller and later was appointed as its director. Not satisfied 'wth this type of work situation, he opened his own Woollen merchant operation. First operating from home with his younger brother Dayal Vallabh and then from Betty and Commissioner Streets in Jeppe.
Together with other colleagues he was the founder member o f the Swaraj Sporting Club. He was elected the first captain of the club. A bom organiser, he had an ability to mobilise people to carry out the tasks entrusted to them. A player o f formidable skill he would
remembered for his tenacity, perseverance and ‘never say die attitude’ .
As a delegate to the union meetings he served the club and was well respected for his forthright uncompromising views and was therefore always at the forefront o f all the clubs activities. In 1951 he broke his leg whilst playing soccer and this incident brought an early end to his active playing career.
He was also a member o f the Hinds Cricket Club as well and under his leadership and guidance saw the club annex the first division trophy o f the Witwatersrand Cricket Union. He served both the clubs with equal dedication. At the 25th anniversary o f the Swaraj Sport
ing Club he was once again at the helm of activities.Being extremely sensitive to the political and
social situation in his community and country at large, he was a member o f the Transvaal Indian Congress. Due to his p>oliticaI views and opposition to the than apartheid regime, he was jailed together with other colleagues.
During the independence of India in 1947 his gallant son was once again in the forefront to celebrate India’s independence marching from Jeppestown to 50 Fox Street where Gandhi Hall was situated. He served a term of office at the local Management Council in Lenasia.
Jairambhai had a firm commitment to the social responsibility, and upliftment o f his community in Jeppe and the Transvaal Hindu Seva Samaj.
There were many widows in Jeppe and together with his colleagues saw to the betterment of the families and was one of the first initiators to render assistance and hand out hampers to the needy, not only in Jeppe but also in Newclare and Sophiatown.
He travelled to India to acquire the pots required for a catering service. The Jepp>e community and the entire community on the Transvaal benefited from this catering service.
He worked tirelessly to establish the present Gandhi Hall and his contribution to the Transvaal Hindu Seva Samaj is well documented in the annals of the Samaj.
The true son of Jeppe was an ambassador o f the local community. He was either well loved by those who understood his nature and forthright views, and those that disagreed saw the wisdom of his views at a latter stage.
We at the club salute Mr. Jairambhai Vallabh Bhagoon for his contribution and laying the necessary foundation for the club to celebrate its 50th anniver- saiy.
