We had a lovely treat from Year 5 at their Friday Assembly last week. We were in the familiar surroundings of the pool, familiar for swimming lessons but not, perhaps, for an assembly! The Assembly was broken into 2 and had been researched and put together by the children with the final polish by Mr Warren. The first half was about safety in water. After an example of front crawl, back crawl and even synchronised swimming, we had a potential ‘drowning’ being rescued by our own lifeguards. We were then treated to a series of facts about the RNLI and the RLSS who carry out vital work on our coast, pools and larger lakes and all funded entirely by charitable donations. Some of the children gave us their own stories about accidents near water. Finally, we had a dramatic production of the story of Grace Darling famed for participating in the rescue of survivors from the shipwrecked Forfarshire in 1838. With a dingy taking the place of the lifeboat our actors ‘rowed’ across the raging sea to rescue the survivors of the shipwreck. Brilliant to watch and we all even managed to sing ‘Those in peril of the sea’ unaccom-

panied! Thank you Year 5. An advance notice that Mr Warren has secured a visit for the day from the RNLI who will talk about their activities and even take some activities in the pool. Something to look forward to indeed!

And so to this week which is Safer Internet Week with Safer Internet Day on Tuesday. The UK Safer Internet Centre has some superb activities that we have been going through over the week as well as holding assemblies for the children. The main theme this year is to ask an adult if something is ok and to talk about consent and permission. It really stressed the fact that we should treat conversations online as we would face-to-face. The assemblies also gave suggestions on how to ask for help.

The internet is here to stay, so we (adults) really need to educate our children on the best way to access it and how to keep safe online. Not unlike how we teach them to cross the road or answer a phone or what to do when lost. We teach children to navigate the world and the internet is part of that. I cannot stress enough the need for us adults to get educated so that we can help. The NSPCC is also an excellent resource. The School had an internet talk on Tuesday; if you couldn’t make it this time please do look out for the next one.

Tuesday was also the Parents Forum. We are always looking to improve on what we do. One of the ideas that came up was a maths workshop for parents. Well, you will be delighted to know that we are in the planning stage for this already and hope to give workshops in maths as well as phonics. The perennial issue of mud also came up and we are entirely sympathetic; however, we don’t want to get rid of all the grass as this is really enjoyed by the children in the summer and autumn terms. Admittedly the mud is also enjoyed! We endeavour to keep them off it and will continue to do so. If it is any consolation even the Saxons called February ‘Mud Month’ or Sōlmōnath and muddy month it is. Still if the weather

continues then we can look forward to the dry March winds from Chaucer (with translation): Whan that Aprill with his shoures soote When April with its sweet-smelling showers The droghte of March hath perced to the roote, Has pierced the drought of March to the root, And so to next week with our Parents’ Evenings, Tercentenary Cross Country and then half term to look forward to. Please remember to come along to our Friday Assemblies where we celebrate the children’s achievements (in and outside of school) catch up on school news, have a cup of tea and you can even use the pool. A great start to the weekend!

It has been a great week in the boarding house this week. On Saturday the students enjoyed a trip to Cadbury World in Birmingham. After going through the tour and being given some free chocolate bars, they had the chance to write their names in chocolate, although Alfie decided it would be more fun to draw a big chocolate heart! They had a go at tempering chocolate and had the chance to see how some speciality chocolate treats were made.

On Sunday, most of the School Cottage boarders headed off to the relay races at Abberley Hall. Those who remained behind were treated to a film and popcorn afternoon and settled down to watch The Incredibles 2 in the cinema room.

A number of our Chinese boarders had a wonderful time as they headed off to Birmingham to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

The Pool League continues and Mr Rogers is increasing his lead remaining undefeated in all matches. Preparations are in hand for next week’s Open Mic night and we hope everyone is getting some good practice in for what should be a fantastic evening.

County rugby for Archie We heard this week that Archie J has been selected to play county rugby. Well done, Archie!

Choral Scholarships I am very happy to announce that Lucton School has started a new choral scholarship link with St. Laurence’s Parish Church in Ludlow – where Rev. Price is Rector. Miles King in Year 2 who has started this week, is our first choral scholar and has agreed to sing at St. Laurence’s for services and on a Thursday in exchange for a bursary and singing lessons with Mr Maxim at Lucton. This is a really exciting time for Lucton School and St. Laurence’s. We hope that Miles will be the first of many

choral scholars. Committing to experiences like this is wonderful for your child’s C.V. and UCAS application in later years. If you are interested in your son/daughter becoming a choral scholar please do come and speak to the office, Rev. Price, Mrs Wall or myself. Trial periods will be available, before you commit permanently. Mr Wall

Safer Internet Day 2019 Lucton School joined the global Safer Internet Day campaign to promote the safe and responsible use of technology. This was coordinated in the UK by the UK Safer Internet Centre, Safer Internet Day and was on Tuesday 5th February 2019 with the theme ‘Together for a better internet’. Celebrated in over 130 countries, Safer Internet Day saw Lucton School join hundreds of organisations right across the UK and globally to play their part in helping to create a better internet.

To celebrate the day, we held an assembly and presentation for parents in the evening. Throughout the week all students will be working on this in PSHE lessons. Every student and member of staff has been involved.

Will Gardner, Director of the UK Safer Internet Centre and CEO of Childnet,

said: “Safer Internet Day is an opportunity for everyone across the UK and globally to come together for a better internet. Whether you are a young person, parent, carer, school or organisation, we can all take positive actions to help make the internet a great and safe place. Hundreds of schools and organisations have pledged their support for Safer Internet Day and it is this collaboration that helps ensure Safer Internet Day has such a positive impact, reaching 45% of UK children in 2018 and growing year on year.”

Continued from the front page. George J and Darcy C provided more qualifiers in the Year 7/8 category with Hannah W, James H and Hugo vLG in the Year 5/6 race. William E, Solange D A and Ane B complete the list who will make their way to Rugby School on the 30th March for the anticipated Nationals which have not taken place for the last three years due to bad weather. Let's hope this year is the year for medals!

A huge thank you must go to all staff who assisted on the day and parents too who supported all of the runners. Roger, Mr Wilson and Mrs Grififths for their driving and XC expertise on this special day! FLOREAT LUCTONA Mr Muckalt Director of Sport/Houseparent

Tag Rugby We welcomed Heathfield Knoll on Tuesday for two tag rugby matches.

It was great to give some Year 2s a chance to represent the School in tag rugby, a first for Lucton Prep School. Jake I, Harry C, Anton Wenczek, Max B-R joined Joey T and Thomas H in the U8 team. All enjoyed themselves, played with a smile on their faces and really enjoyed the experience. It was great for Harry and Jake to score tries too and all really impressed the visiting coaches.

Across the two matches, it was probably a draw, but it was simply wonderful to join

up boys from Year 2,3 and 4 to make rugby teams.

Top tagger of the day was Thomas H and Will E probably ran the furthest of all players too!

Parent Forum Following a very positive Parents Forum on Tuesday evening the minutes are now available for you to view on the Parent Portal.

Several topics were covered, with parents representing all areas of the school.

Thank you to all those who attended or sent in their points for discussion. It was such a successful event, we will certainly consider doing this again, later in the year.

BBC filming at school this week Old Luctonian, Phillip Witcomb, is writing a book about his life and he will shortly be a guest on BBC’s One Show. In preparation for his appearance, the One Show are putting together a short interview to get a flavour of the story and

Phillip’s interesting life. His story is quite amazing, he is the son

of the notorious Pablo Escobar, and when he was a pupil at Lucton, it was under his new adopted identity. You will have to wait for the book or film for the full story, but you will certainly understand much more if you catch him when it goes out on the One Show.

Sports Report

BASKETBALL v Ludlow College We returned to Ludlow College for a second match this term. It was pleasing to have several debutants for this match in the shape of Luke B, Aaron B and Theo H. They were very welcome and were integrated well by captain, Nabil.

The team were dominant in every department, defensive work by Nabil and Gilbert was particularly exceptional. Mike L was simply superb on rebound gains and drives into the heart of the opponents and was top scorer and man of the match. Gilbert is now known as ‘the cleaner’ as he swept up loose balls in attack and defence and made Ludlow pay for every mistake. 78-20 victory was a real positive for the hard working team. U12 NETBALL v CCB Player of the match, Faith Price, led by example, always encouraging and supporting the rest of the team as she worked tirelessly to link both ends of the court. It was good to see the shooters, Felicity A and Natalie P grow in confidence as the game progressed, whilst Maureen and Paige stepped up and played with calm assurance in the defensive circle. Edith and Molly were always free to offer support, as all players contributed positively, with some slick moves, improved circle work and a 10-6 victory. U14 NETBALL v CCB With Harriet and Georgia away on ISA duty, player of the match, Paige, controlled the centre court with some timely interceptions and quick attacking passes. The whole team worked together as a unit, with occasional glimpses of slick, attacking play into the shooting circle. It took Alice and Amber a while to gel as a shooting combination and once they had grown in confidence the goals began to flow and we began to play with greater zest and determination which culminated in a well- earned 13-13 draw!

Abberley Cross Country Relay On Sunday, Miss Roper took 16 Students to run in the Abberley Hall cross country relay event. It was extremely cold and very windy, but the students gave excellent performances. The U11 girls and boys ran first and showed brilliant determination and teamwork. The U11 girls finished 6th out of 8 and the boys placed 7th out of 12. U13 boys and girls also ran together, Darcy C got the 3rd fastest time of 7 minutes 48 seconds. The U13 boys came 5th out of 10 and well done to George J for a brilliant race finish. The U13 girls placed 5th out of 6 teams. U18 HOCKEY v John Masefield Having gone down 2-1 in the first half, the girls rallied in true Lucton style. Slick attacking moves created many goal-scoring opportunities as Jenny helped set up goals for Annie and Ellie who scored three apiece. In this end-to-end game, star of the match was our debut goalie, Alice C, who made some fine saves. Good team work from all players and tight defending, especially from Chloe, whose high work rate was noted by Mr Connop, helped the team record a positive 6-5 victory.

U11 NETBALL v The Elms The girls were a few players down due to the cross country but that didn’t stop a strong performance. I was very pleased with how supportive the girls were of each other and how well they worked as a team bringing the ball down the court. Sophie, Esther and Elodie took some lovely shots making sure they followed for the rebound. Megan had a brilliant game at centre working well up and down the court. Annalise showed great strength up against a very tall attacking player. Unfortunately, the girls didn’t win but there are lots of positives to take away. U12 NETBALL v The Elms The girls played the match in high spirits and played hard to the end. They improved there interception skills and Lois, in particular, improved and started to have a high percentage of turnover ball in the defensive circle! Amy-Rose was voted player of the match with her tenacious attitude towards the game throughout. We moved Rachael to GD and she worked hard in this position. We scored 2 good goals during the match but unfortunately we were outplayed. Well done for the positive spirit shown throughout! BADMINTON v CCB This was our third match against Christ College, and again the same result – a convincing win for Lucton. The final score of 16 -7 reflected our dominance in all areas, winning the majority of doubles, singles and all of the mixed doubles. We were most impressive at closing out the tight games where our confidence and cool nerves paid dividends. Some great play from the entire team, Justin, Harold, Tommy, Halan and Phillips for the boys, and Enbo, Ching Mei, Kristy and Evie for the girls. U13 RUGBY v Monmouth B On Wednesday afternoon we hosted Monmouth and were bolstered with Jamie W and Jack B at 9. The match started at a tremendous pace with Monmouth taking the early initiative with two scores and

then we came back into the match to level with two wonderful tries from Ellis. Jack was particularly good in defence and tackled and ran with passion and determi-nation. Monmouth were just a little stronger in the tackle/ruck area, allowing them to attack and keep us on the defensive for long periods and although they ran out winners by ten tries to six, we played really well. I hope that the boys learn from this experience. We need a little more collective determination on the field of play. This applies to any sporting context; so boys take the positives from this into training, listen carefully to the coaches in school and then take what you have learned into matches in the future. Today was an excellent exhibition of running rugby from both teams. U12 RUGBY v Monmouth Lucton’s first game was against Monmouth in which the boys started with lots of passion and a great work ethic. In particular, Charlie Wang played with lots of courage and intensity - running to every

We’ve had a lovely week and several of us have been in very high spirits! Miss Coates says we have to behave and we have been working hard as well. Maggie had her first lesson with no stirrups and Jigsaw looked after her really well and she enjoyed the experience saying she felt much safer in the saddle afterwards! Mattie enjoyed riding Charlie and he helped Mattie a lot. I’ve had some fun jumping especially with Alanna so all in all we have had a fun week!

break down and making tackle after tackle. Furthermore, Tristan had the game of his life making consistent runs and pushing the ball forward into Monmouth territory. Unfortunately we didn’t win, but the boys learnt lots to take into their next game. U12 RUGBY v Ludlow After a small break the boys had a second game. There had been discussion on aspects they needed to improve to help them move forward, such as their defensive structure and attacking line. Taylor Mogford, the referee, started off the game with his whistle and the boys were underway again. This time with the points they had discussed, the boys started off the half really well, attacking and spending most of the half on Ludlow’s try line. Eventually, after many attempts and resilience, Tristan broke the Ludlow line of defence and scored a wonderful try. The game was not over there though, Ludlow came fighting back passing the ball with intent. They managed to squeeze past our defence and level the score. Even after that,

the boys had their heads held high into the next chapter of the game. From the kick off, Charlie Wang again was a star playing making tackles consistently, additionally Charlie Rayson decided that now his time was to shine and he also made some effective tackles. Unfortunately, again the game did not end with the desired result; however, the boys did play extremely well! ROWING CLUB AWARD Following their silver medal success last summer at the National Junior Rowing Championships, Toby and the quad have received a Highly Commended Award from Herefordshire Sports. Another one to the collection!!
