Reading Velocity # 7 Scanning: The Lamborghini of Reading Rates Why Understanding Reading Rates Helps You Struggling Reader Has one rateslowfor all reading tasks. Proficient Reader Like an expert driver, this reader can shift reading rates without even thinking about it to match the right rate for the task at hand to navigate smoothly through all kinds of text. 5 Rates of Reading ScanningSkimming Rapid Reading Slow Reading Careful Reading Watch this video and learn at least 5 things about scanning What did you learn? Scanning speeds are extremely fast: thousands of words per minute Virtually no comprehension (0-10%) You scan to find a specific word or phrase Use this rate on lists, dictionaries, phone books (maybe!), or any text where you are looking for something specific. Then you slow down and read for meaning. Ace Reader has a Scan/Search Game Can you explain why scanning is the best rate of reading to use when you initially approach these texts? How can I get better at scanning? Play the scanning game on Ace Reader Ask your teacher if you can have dictionary drill competitions in class (this used to be pretty standard in elementary classrooms back in the day) Be aware of the rate of reading you are using for different tasks. Can you identify times when you use scanning? What was your purpose for reading? While the comprehension rate is almost nonexistent, what did you pick up from your scanning? Next time... Skimming! Many people confuse scanning and skimming and think they are interchangeable. Theyre not, as you will see! Keep on reading and thinking about your reading. Keep on reading and thinking about your reading. Reading Velocity is provided by LISD Dyslexia Services. For questions or concerns, please contact Dr. Ramona Lowe at
