According to recent studies, students cannot become deep readers andwriters without a genuine engagement with texts. Research indicates thatexposure to various texts can build literacy skills while simultaneouslybuilding bridges to the content areas. While these titles are recommended, students may choose other appropriate fiction or non-fiction titles based ontheir interest and reading level. We encourage parents to review the textsand discuss these with their children. Some titles and authors may dealwith mature themes. You can find reviews of books on amazon.com inorder to determine a book that might be the right fit. Another helpful reviewsite is http://www.commonsensemedia. org/new/books 1) Kids who don’t read during summer vacation lose two to three monthsof reading achievement (“The Effects of Summer Vacation on AchievementTest Scores”). 2) Elementary students who read 10-15 books at home over the summergain as much in reading achievement as students who attend summerschool(“Addressing Summer Reading Setback Among EconomicallyDisadvantaged Elementary Students“). 3) Middle school students who read only five to six books over thesummer do not suffer from that summer reading loss.http://kylenebeers.com/blog/ 2014/05/04/guidelines-for -summer-reading/
