Learners must produce a service portfolio. The service portfolio must contain evidence that learners have:

- Present and future products and services The portfolio must be completed prior to learners undertaking the one summative practical assessment. Evidence from the graded practical assessment must also be presented in the service portfolio.

2. Summative practical assessment

Learners must complete one plait or twist which will be observed, and marked by centre assessors. The practical assessment must take place in a real or realistic working environment on a real client. At a minimum the practical assessment for this unit must cover:

Service - One plait or twist carried out in a commercially viable time taking into

consideration all classifications, characteristics and critical influencing factors

- One new client

- Performed on hair below the shoulder

Products, tools and equipment - Use 2 styling/finishing products

- Use bands, tail comb, sectioning clips and hair grips to create and secure the plait or twist

Recorded professional discussion can also be used as an assessment method attached to the practical assessment and is particularly useful for gathering evidence for criteria related to evaluation and reflection. Professional discussions should be planned and recorded.

Unit content

LO1 Know the salon requirements for plaiting and twisting hair

Explain the personal responsibilities for health and safety when providing services in plaiting and twisting hair:

Personal presentation is important in creating an overall good impression and promotes client satisfaction, repeat/new business and reputation for the stylist/salon. Learners must

- Maintain a positive image and attitude throughout the service

- Ensure uniform requirements are adhered to. Each salon will have different requirements and expect learners to dress appropriately. As a general rule closed-in low-heel shoes should be worn. Where tights/stockings/socks are worn, these should be clean and free from ladders or holes. Smart non-restrictive clothes for ease of movement with sleeves or jewellery that does not touch the client whilst service is provided. Other examples may include a set uniform or tee-shirt with or without salon logo

- Present good, personal hygiene including clean clothes, clean teeth and fresh breath

- Avoid strong smells, e.g. tobacco, heavy perfume or aftershave

- Maintain good posture throughout the service with body weight evenly balanced

Describe how to effectively implement health and safety procedures when preparing the work area:

It is the responsibility of all staff to maintain health and safety procedures whilst working in a salon

- Present a clean and hygienic working area

- Contribute to safe practices

- Knowledge of all health and safety legislation

Describe the risks that may cause hazards when providing plaiting and twisting services:

Salon safety is of paramount importance and learners must know how to recognise potential harm or injury that may occur

Hazard – anything that has the potential to cause harm, e.g. hair straightener lead left plugged in and trailing around client’s chair

Risk – a chance, high or low that a hazard may cause harm

Learners must ensure they work safely throughout the plaiting and twisting service, ensuring maintenance of electrical equipment is monitored and what legislation is required including P.A.T. Learners must carry out visual checks on electrical equipment for safe use and ensure their client is comfortable and free from harm

Dispose of waste appropriately to minimise risk of cross-infection Explain the different types of working methods that promote environmental and sustainable working practices:

Sustainable environment and sustainable working practices requires the co-operation of all staff, these may include

- Reducing waste and managing waste (recycle, reuse, safe disposal), e.g. measure products where applicable and do not use excess amounts

- Reducing energy usage (energy efficient hairdryers, low energy lighting, utilising solar panels)

- Reducing water usage and other resources, e.g. turn tap off whilst shampooing prior to plaiting and twisting hair

Learners must know the different hair classifications and how they will influence products, tools and equipment used when plaiting and twisting, e.g. a client with a hair classification of 1c – coarse, straight, difficult hair, has hair that may be hard to control due to the density and will influence methods used to create a plait or twist

Explain how hair characteristics influence plaiting and twisting techniques services:

Analysis of both the hair classification and characteristics during a client consultation will influence the plaiting and twisting hair service, learner must know

- Density – this is defined as the number of hairs on the scalp and will affect the size of sections used when creating plaiting and twisting services and choice of products used. Very fine density hair should be treated with caution and less tension used to avoid causing damage to the hair

- Texture – the circumference of an individual strand of hair. Hair can be fine, medium or coarse. Coarse hair has the largest circumference, and fine hair the smallest. Texture may affect the porosity of the hair

- Porosity – this relates to the condition of the cuticle. Porosity levels are caused by both chemical and physical damage. Cuticles which are raised and feel rough, and may tangle when plaiting and twisting hair, are known as porous and will absorb water and products more easily and unevenly when applying finishing products. Suitable treatment products will be required if hair is porous

- Elasticity – this relates to the condition of the cortex layer of the hair. Elasticity levels are affected by how the hair is treated and the condition it is in. Hair should stretch and return to its normal size, this indicates the hair is in good condition with no damage to the cortex. If hair stretches and snaps or does not return to its original length this indicates internal damage to the cortex. When plaiting and twisting the hair, damage may be more acute towards the ends of the hair, therefore care must be taken when handling the hair

- Growth patterns – this relates to the direction the hair grows from the scalp and may influence the desired finish. A difficult growth pattern may influence how a plait and twist is created, e.g. when plaiting and twisting over a double or strong crown area more tension and careful sectioning should be used

- Head and face shape and size – this relates to the overall shape and size of the client’s head and includes any specific features. When plaiting and twisting hair, it is important to ensure that the client has a style which suits their overall appearance, e.g. a client with a high forehead may require a style where the front or fringe is left loose and the plait or twist is not pulled too tightly, to avoid accentuating the high forehead

- Desired look – the client’s wishes must be considered when creating plaiting and twisting techniques and advice offered on how to create the finish look, for example, a client may request a scalp plait where the hair needs to be of a thicker density, learners must be able to advise correctly

- Scalp condition – caution must be taken with a client who has a sore or sensitive scalp, this may contra-indicate the service in extreme cases or require adjustments, for example, if a client required a tight scalp plait, a looser version could be offered to avoid causing discomfort to the scalp

Describe factors that can prevent or restrict plaiting and twisting hair services:

There is a range of factors which might contribute to preventing or restricting a plaiting and twisting hair service, e.g. a client with an open wound or with recent scar tissue on the head may not be able to have a plait or twist at all or adjustments made by ensuring the hair being held has not too much tension

Non-contagious – may prevent or restrict services due to severity of condition - Sebaceous cyst – lump on top or under scalp

- Psoriasis – dry silvery scales of skin

- Contact dermatitis – dry, red, sore, itchy, may possibly be weeping

- Scalp sensitivity – an inflamed, sore and red scalp may prevent the use of combs being used close to the scalp or hair held with tension

- Recent scar/tissue injury may be tender when using combs

- Hair loss (alopecia), possible after hair extension removal, medication, stress or trauma – use tools and equipment carefully to adapt style to cover hair loss

- Traction alopecia – loss of hair at the point of tension; excess plaiting or twisting may cause this

Explain contra-indications to plaiting and twisting hair services: Contra-indications can prevent or alter the service, products or techniques used in a plaiting and twisting service. The learner must identify any contra-indication through consultation and discussion with the client prior to the service

Contagious – can be passed person to person may prevent service - Bacterial – impetigo, folliculitis, furuncles

- Viral – warts, herpes

- Fungal – tinea capitis/ringworm

- Animal parasites – pediculosis capitis/head lice, scabies

Hair defects or disorders - Trichorrhexis nodosa – hair defect – rough swollen broken shaft

- Poor elasticity and/or poor porosity – hair that has poor elasticity and/or poor porosity may contra-indicate the service

Explain the value of questioning when providing plaiting and twisting services:

An important factor of the plaiting and twisting service is to understand the client’s requirements and to ensure a happy, satisfied client will rebook for future services along with recommending and promoting salon staff and services to other potential clients. Learners must

- Ensure questions are asked to the client prior, during and after plaiting and twisting services

- Use questions to communicate with the client in a way that meets the client’s individual needs

- Conduct questions in a way to make the client feel valued. For example, a question could be asked regarding comfort, refreshments or magazines (if available) will add to the service and general ambience to personalise the service

LO3 Understand the tools, products and techniques for plaiting and twisting hair

State the products and tools required for carrying out plaiting and twisting services:

Products - Hair spray (aerosol) – varying degrees of strength (firm to soft hold) and

bonds finished style in place. Apply sparingly to dry hair at a distance of 20cm, avoiding self, client and others inhaling product

- Serum – adds moisture and shine to hair. Ideal for dry brittle or chemically treated hair. Apply on wet or dry hair. Use sparingly on fine hair

- Gel – produces a firm hold and ideal for plaits and twists that are tight and structure and hold are required, apply to wet hair

- Finishing sprays/mist/gloss (aerosol) – adds a protective layer and gloss to dry hair and may be used after or instead of hair spray for natural soft finish. Apply very sparingly as over-use may weigh down hair. Check surroundings after use and before client moves – any product on floor may cause a hazard and be slippery

- Detangling or conditioning spray – a spray with conditioning agents that help to remove knots, making brushing easy and limiting any damage that may be caused when removing plaits and twists

- Water spray – used to dampen small sections of the hair

Tools - Flat brushes – used to brush through the hair prior to plaiting or twisting to

remove tangles and knots

- Tail comb – used to take clean sections when picking up sections that are being plaited or twisted

- Sectioning clips – used to section hair not being plaited or twisted out of the way to avoid becoming tangled in hair

- Dressing comb – used to dress and tweak the hair when plait or twist has been completed, taming loose hair and smoothing where required

- Grips/bands/pins – used to secure plaits and twists into place

Equipment - Used only to enhance style

- Straightening irons – used to straighten or curl front sections of the hairstyle

- Curling tongs – used to curl ends of hair or small sections of hair

Explain the different methods of creating plaits and twists and the effects that can be achieved:

On the scalp plaits and twists – the plait or twist starts from above the back hair line and sections are taken and added to the previous section, until all hair has been picked up and added

Off the scalp plaits and twists – the plait or twist continues or starts from below the back or side hair line

- French plait – a single inverted plait using all the client’s hair, the hair is divided into three equal sections and crossed over from left and right continuously, while picking up hair to add to the sections

- Multiple cornrows – lots of three-strand plaits, weaved under instead of over, which sit on top of their base. This is also known as a cane row

- Fishtail plait – a plait with two main sections and two small sections, the small sections are crossed from left to right in even sections over each other to create a herringbone look

- Two strand twists – the hair is twisted, then crossed over each other until the twist is complete

- Flat twists – the hair is rolled on to the scalp in small sections and twisted by hand keeping the hair flat then secured, normally at the crown area, with a pin or band

Explain the different methods of removing plaits and twists:

Learners must be able to remove plaits and twists created and also be able to instruct clients how to remove their own

- Remove bands and grips carefully ensuring they are not being ripped from the hair, which may cause damage

- Allow the hair to unravel or unwrap gently

- Do not pull or tug harshly

- Use a tail comb or similar to loosen gently

- A detangling or conditioning spray may be used to keep hair soft and conditioned as the plait or twist is loosened

- Gently brush or comb through, being careful not to cause damage

- Reassure client that excessive hair loss may occur and this is normal when plaits or twists that have been secured for a period time are removed, due to the natural growth cycle of the hair

Prepare and check the area, products, tools and equipment prior to carrying out the plaiting and twisting service:

Preparation of learners – learners must present themselves professionally, displaying - Clean hygienic appearance

- Appropriate hair and make-up (as applicable)

- Readiness for the plaiting and twisting service

- A good attitude

- Personality/persona fitting for the salon

- Good communication and listening skills

- Good posture maintenance throughout the plaiting and twisting service

Prepare the working area – learners will ensure - There is adequate room around the work area to allow safe use of all

equipment

- All work areas are hazard-free including chair, trolley, work station/dressing unit and floor

- Trolleys are clean, unwanted items are removed and replaced with fresh cleaned/sterilised items

- Towels, capes and model outer gowns are clean and freshly laundered for service and removed after use

Prepare products – learners will ensure - Products are set up at the work area ready for use, e.g. if using gel to plait or

twist with, ensure it is part of the trolley set up

- Use water spray as required

- Use setting and finishing products as required

Prepare tools and equipment - Ensure tools are placed in logical order of use, on clean towel or disposable

paper towel

- Ensure electrical equipment identified for styling and finishing is prepared safely and turned on only when appropriate, e.g. straightening irons may heat up quickly; learners must know the optimum time to turn equipment on to prevent waste of electricity, hazard or risk

Prepare the client for services:

Learners will ensure that previous hair services have been carried out correctly and meet the satisfaction of the client. Learners must check there are no excess products in the hair to inhibit the plaiting and twisting service, the hair is wet or dry based on requirements and protective garments remain dry and intact

- Remove obstructive jewellery or items that would inhibit the plaiting and twisting service

- Adjust styling chair height to avoid excessive bending by learners and maximise client comfort

- Position a foot stand where necessary (or available) for additional client comfort

- Ensure the client maintains the correct posture to avoid hazard or risk

- Confirm that the client is comfortable at start of service

LO5 Be able to provide services for plaiting and twisting hair

Select products, tools and equipment to complete the plaiting and twisting service: Learners must demonstrate they have identified and used the most suitable products, tools and equipment to create the total look

Products – learners will choose the most appropriate products to aid the plaiting and twisting service and maintain client comfort during the service. Examples may include water spray to keep hair wet or to wet dry hair, shampooing and conditioning products as a pre-service treatment

Tools – in selection of tools learners must use the most appropriate items to create a finish and be able to manipulate the hair without pulling or causing damage to the cuticle, e.g. use a wide tooth comb to remove knots and comb from point to roots, along with keeping sections even and balanced

Where electrical equipment is used, for example straighteners to smooth and straighten a fringe or curling tong/irons to curl small sections left loose at the client’s sides, learners must

- Show correct use when working electrical equipment

- Demonstrate that the finish has been enhanced by the use of electrical items

- Ensure the finished looks blends with plait or twist created Use products and tools to produce the desired outcome:

Products – learners will demonstrate they can use the correct products appropriate to the client’s needs. An example of this would be shampooing the hair prior to the plaiting and twisting service to remove a build-up of products, assist in the control of the hair and help create the finish

Tools – learners must ensure all tools used are fit for purpose and tools are used correctly. An example is using hair bands that are the appropriate size to the sections of the hair that are being secured

Use a combination of techniques to achieve the desired outcome considering influencing factors: Learners will display an aptitude in controlling techniques, using products effectively to aid the finished result, demonstrating skills to manipulate and control the hair with the chosen tools. Learners must

Choose the correct plaiting and twisting technique for the agreed outcome, taking into the account influencing factors identified

- Ensure the hair is prepared

- Use the correct products to achieve the desired result for hair classification/type

- Apply products in logical sequence and appropriate to the plaiting and twisting service

- Use tools that are appropriate for the plait and twist

Techniques – learners will use and adapt techniques appropriately to create a finish taking into consideration all influencing factors, learners must

- Ensure the hair is not pulled beyond its tensile strength

- Demonstrate dexterity in management of the selected tools and when manipulating hair into place

Provide in-service checks with the client:

Use appropriate communication and questioning techniques to check on the client’s comfort and general well-being throughout the service

Ensure checks with the clients confirm agreed service

Demonstrate that the checks made enhance the plaiting and twisting service and disguise influencing factors; e.g. loose, low hairline hair is secured with pins and held in place with finishing spray

Seek approval from the client before making changes or adaptations

Follow safe and hygienic methods of working:

Tools and equipment appropriately cleaned and sterilised before and during the plaiting and twisting service

Manufacturers’ instructions followed for products and tools

Electrical equipment checked for safety before use

Display good processes of application of products, e.g. carefully applying water spray or detangling spray

Carry out a service without causing danger or damage to self, client or work areas intentionally or by accident, e.g. tail comb kept away from scalp when not in use

Identify potential risks and hazards

Provide aftercare advice and recommendations for the client:

Provide support for the client to be able to manage the plait or twist provided - Clearly explaining the homecare routine for the plait or twist

- Providing guidance for any changes in the hair care routine

- Recommend and select appropriate aftercare products for shampooing, conditioning, styling and finishing

- Recommend other services to enhance the plaiting or twisting service. For example colour services

- Provide information about how lifestyle can affect caring for the plaiting and twisting service

Maintain accurate client records:

Record and maintenance cards/electronic files are an effective resource within a salon and provide accurate information regarding client services, history of the client, the products, styles and any tests carried out with dates. Learners must understand the importance of record keeping, ensuring future services can be tracked. Maintenance of record cards/files will verify faults and general repairs for specific items used, e.g. torn cutting cape. Learners must ensure

- The client record cards are maintained and show current information

- Latest equipment testing date records are checked

Skin cancer awareness

Please note this information will not be assessed for the achievement of this unit. Public awareness of skin cancer has never been higher, and yet skin cancer remains the

fastest growing cancer in the UK, especially amongst young people. The chances of a

Professionals in hair, beauty, sports massage and health and wellbeing industries work

closely with clients and in many cases have sight of areas of skin which may not be easily

visible to the client. An informed awareness of the signs, symptoms and changes of

appearance to be aware of when checking for early signs of cancer is a crucial tool for the

conscientious practitioner in order to provide the most thorough service and in some cases,

possibly lifesaving information signposting.

Signs to look for when checking moles include utilising the ABCDE guide:

A - Asymmetry – the two halves of the area/mole may differ in their shape and not match.

B - Border – the edges of the mole area may be irregular or blurred and sometimes show

notches or look ‘ragged’.

C - Colour – this may be uneven and patchy. Different shades of black, brown and pink may

be seen.

D - Diameter – most but not all melanomas are at least 6mm in diameter. If any mole gets

bigger or changes see your doctor.

E - Elevation/evolving – elevation means the mole is raised above the surface and has an

uneven surface. Looks different from the rest or changing in size, shape or colour. Anyone

can get a suspicious mole or patch of skin checked out for free by the NHS by visiting their

doctor, who may then refer to a dermatologist (an expert in diagnosing skin cancer).

Assessment guidance

Assessors must use the amplified assessment guidance in this section to judge whether assessment criteria have been achieved in the practical assessment.

P13 Prepare and check the area, products, tools and equipment prior to carrying out the plaiting and twisting service

Learners must demonstrate that they have effectively prepared themselves for the plaiting and twisting service, ensuring they are presentable and dressed professionally and appropriately. Products, tools and equipment are neatly set up on the work station and/or placed in trolley on lead side of learner. Where electrical equipment is used for small sections of the hair, this is checked and confirmed to be in safe working order prior to the service. Resources such as stylebooks or mobile applications are ready for client reference. Learners must select clean protective garments, towels and a cape, ensuring that the client is comfortable and the chair height is correct.

P14 Prepare the client for services

Learners must confirm the agreed look with the client, clearly explaining how the service will be carried out and how the plait or twist will be finished, during and after the service, avoiding technical jargon.

P16 Demonstrate effectiveness in the salon when plaiting and twisting hair

Learners must demonstrate that they are able to evaluate their own effectiveness when performing a plaiting and twisting service, learners must identify their own strengths and weaknesses and state how improvements can be made, including setting themselves SMART targets to achieve this. For example, in producing flat twists, a learner may identify that sectioning required more attention to ensure an even result on the head.

P17 Select products, tools and equipment to complete the plaiting and twisting service

Learners must demonstrate that they have selected appropriate products, tools, and equipment to achieve the agreed plaiting and twisting. Products selected to maintain appropriate hold for hair and client comfort when detangling. Tools selected are for the correct purpose to achieve the desired outcome. Protective clothing is used appropriately to protect client from products used.

When spraying aerosols, learners must ensure they are at a distance of 20cm and necessary protection is offered to the client’s face and eyes.

Learners must demonstrate that they have successfully plaited and twisted the hair using a range of appropriate techniques to meet the agreed and planned outcome. Learners must demonstrate they can use tools proficiently and safely to section, plait and twist the hair accurately.

P19 Use a combination of techniques to achieve the desired outcome considering influencing factors

Learners must demonstrate that they have successfully plaited and twisted hair using a range of appropriate techniques to meet the agreed and planned outcome. Learners must demonstrate they can use tools and equipment proficiently and safely without undue tension to the hair. Learners must demonstrate good dexterity when holding and picking up sections ensuring balance and neatness is achieved.

P20 Provide in-service checks with the client

Learners must demonstrate throughout the service they have checked on client comfort. Learners must demonstrate that they have personalised the service where appropriate and any changes or adaptations are agreed and clearly explained to the client during the plaiting and twisting service.

P21 Follow safe and hygienic methods of working

Learners must demonstrate that they have followed safe and hygienic methods of working throughout the duration of the plaiting and twisting service. For example they cleaned and sterilised tools and equipment before use and followed manufacturers’ instructions for use of electrical equipment and products.

P22 Provide aftercare advice and recommendations for the client

Learners must demonstrate that they have provided the client with advice on how to maintain the plait and twist using products and styling equipment. Learners must ensure that if a client is removing their own plaits and twists that advice and guidance is given and demonstrated where possible to avoid causing damage to the hair or scalp. Additional service recommendations may include advice on colouring services that may complement the style.

P23 Maintain accurate client records

Learners must show that where required they have at a minimum recorded the full service, personal client details and any tests where applicable and records have been stored correctly.
