The Warden writes…..

As I write this, it is the first anniversary of my appointment in the 5 country parishes comprising Holy Cross South. You may, in your Licensed Lay Ministry, have had new Vicars and if so, will know how it takes time for things to settle down. So it has been in my parish duties. To make a better fit with those duties I have changed my Day Off. Now it is a THURSDAY. Accordingly, when this time last year I said that I would do some Reader/LLM work on a Thursday afternoon as well as my Monday at the Old Palace, that no longer is the case. I don’t want to do any work on my Day Off. It has meant that I have been answering emails from and about LLMs very randomly. So, from now on, if you contact me, unless it is very urgent, please stick to the Monday at the Old Palace, or Friday morning.

Other admin notices:

You may be aware that there has been a re-organization at the Old Palace. Doug Chaplin has changed his role and now is exclusively working to develop Lay Ministry. For the very first time, he is being paid to do the Director of Reader Training Role which is very good news for both Doug and all Readers’/LLMs.

Secondly, the Reverend Rob Farmer, Vicar in Ronkswood in Worcester, has eagerly agreed to follow in the footsteps of Rev’d Canon Nick Wright as the next Archdeaconry of Worcester Warden of Readers. Sad though we are that Nick is retiring from the Archdeaconry Warden role, we wish Rob great joy in that role and he is good news for Worcester Archdeaconry LLMs. He introduces himself elsewhere in this Newsletter.

Another crossover from my Parish work and that with Readers/LLMs…Last night I found myself preaching in one of the churches and shared with then something I had picked up at the Central Readers Council AGM back in April. It’s an idea how we all can a little more knowingly be trying to put our faith into effect Saturday to Sunday; and how we might quite simply make a stand against the secular culture in which we all now live.

One of the speakers in the morning session talked of the 6 ‘M’s…

1. How we should all MODEL Godly character…and I’m sure you all do that, all the time

2. Make good work, whether it‘s beds, gardens, in industry or in a classroom, consciously do it well for God.

3. Minister grace and love…be aware that you are loving the people in the bus queue, at the supermarket checkout, at the school gate, in the Mothers’ Union…

4. Mould the local culture ……make it clear that this is how things are to be, loving, compassionate, true and fair.

5. Be a Mouthpiece for freedom and justice….. Support Fairtrade, write letters, whether on behalf of oppressed people or in the newspaper, help out at local refugee centres….

6. And if you do all those, being a Messenger of the Gospel is easy.

In the context of the new vision for Readers and the work of the CRC Chair, Bishop Martyn Snow in that “Saturday to Sunday” Booklet, we may be affrighted at the prospect of change. But as we tried to show at the Holland House weekend, Teaching the Faith is well within the capacity of many, and Local Mission in the 6 ‘M’s too is not hard in principle….

It’s putting it into practice that’s’ is harder.

But then, as GK Chesterton said: It’s not that Christianity has been tried and found wanting, it’s that it hasn’t been tried.

Thank you for all you are and all you do.

Prayers and Blessings

Sue

New Worcester Archdeaconry Warden of Readers

In October, the Revd Rob Farmer will be appointed as Worcester Archdeaconry Warden of Readers by Bishop John. Rob is currently Team Vicar at St Matthew, Ronkswood, part of the Worcester South East Team.

In his new role, Rob will provide support for licensed lay ministers in the Archdeaconry and will be an advocate and champion for lay ministry in the Diocese. He will offer care, support and advice to LLMs and will be part of the team encouraging and discerning vocations to licensed lay ministry, assessing the suitability of potential candidates.

While in the Diocese of Lichfield, Rob was a vocational advisor for a number of years and mentored many candidates for Reader and Ordained Local Ministry.

Rob said: “I am overjoyed to be asked to be part of the team. Encouraging the vocation and ministry of all God’s people has always been a passion of mine, and I look forward to working alongside existing LLMs and journeying with candidates for ministry.”

The Revd Canon Sue Oliver, Warden of Readers, said: “I am delighted Rob is joining the team at the heart of supporting Readers and LLMs of our Diocese. These are exciting times for the future of Lay Ministry across the country and Rob will be at the forefront of discerning new and perhaps some younger Reader vocations in the Worcester Archdeaconry.”

Rob takes over from the Revd Nick Wright who has served in this post for 24 years.

Bereavement Care Training Day Mission & Ministry Revisiting our pastoral theology and practice

When - Thursday 17th October 2019, 9.30am – 4pmWhere - Trinity Methodist Church Centre, 3 Churchfields, Kidderminster, DY10 2JLWho is it for? - For all clergy, LLMs and ALMs, especially funeral ministers and those involved in bereavement support.

Last year’s ‘Taking Funerals Seriously’ consultation with clergy and lay funeral ministers brought forth many requests for fresh training on our approach towards the theology of death, the experience of bereavement and our care of funeral families in their mourning. So we are planning a day conference in two parts: Theology and Practice.

Morning Session: ‘Faith, Hope and Reality: Re-imaging our theology and practice.’Deacon Eunice Attwood, Pastoral Tutor at the Queen’s Foundation in Birmingham, will help us to reflect on the apparent dissonance between ‘popular theology’ and theChurch’s traditional teaching around death and bereavement, and to consider ways inwhich we might meet people where they are and build upon their beginnings of faith.

Afternoon Session: ‘With you every step of the way’ (CofE Funerals website headline)A panel of speakers engaged in bereavement support in various contexts will help us to consider the aims of our post-funeral pastoral care and how we might take steps to provide this as part of our Church community outreach and inclusion. We intend that the day will be flexible enough for plenty of discussion and questions. We invite participants to bring a packed lunch (or nip out to the shops for one). Drinkswill be provided through the day.

If you have any questions at this stage – or would like to offer a contribution to theafternoon session from your own perspective or experience, please contactThe Revd Canon Nick Wright, 01386 443310, [email protected] book your place on this course, please visithttps://bereavementcaretrainingday.eventbrite.co.uk

A virtual interview with Pat Hall Let us begin with a choice of drink and a slice of cake. What would your choice be? Ooh, now that might be a ‘tea’ny bit difficult. Tea? Leaves, properly brewed of course, their aromatics rising to ‘tea’se the senses. It has to be Earl Grey with a ‘tea’ny slice of lemon and lime drizzle cake. Have to watch the figure as cassocks are difficult to enlarge.

To get us underway please choose for us a hymn, song or piece of music and tell us a bit about why you chose it. My chosen hymn would be ‘Brother sister, let me serve you’, which I cannot sing with dry eyes. A few years before answering God’s call to become a Reader I used to visit Iona Abbey on retreat. The week concluded with a communion service of thanksgiving for rest and spiritual renewal. On one such occasion whilst kneeling to receive communion, unaware of anyone else around me, I suddenly became aware of the words of ‘Brother, sister let me serve you’ as the voices of the Iona community held us in a very special place. Words resonating with where I was, at that moment of time in my life. Words which brought great comfort. Words which I felt were being spoken from the lips of Jesus, for my ears to hear and my heart to hold. Those words became mine. At the end of the service we each had, randomly placed into our hands, a folded piece of paper. Words of encouragement for the journey ahead. Expectantly I unfolded mine to reveal, ‘Go and shine as the sun’. I was moved to tears, as from the early days of my teaching career I had been nicknamed ‘sunshine’ but not many people knew that.

From your accent I detect that you are quite at home in the Midlands. Have you always lived here or do you hail from more exotic climes  - if that could be possible !? My mother always told me ‘beware, pride comes before a fall’ and despite being on crutches at the moment, I’ll risk it. I am proud to say, that I am West Midlands ‘born and bred’. Though straying for adventure and God’s plan to widen my experience of people and the situations they occasionally get themselves into, like a highly polished boomerang, I return to my roots, ‘North of the Diocese’.

How long have you been a Reader and where are you based? I retired as a headteacher of a Church of England primary School, in the West Midlands of course, after 42 years in teaching. I lasted a week, hadn’t got enough curtains to twitch, when a keen-eyed curate asked the question ‘would you like to get more involved in church’? The journey began with ALM training, ‘Leading Worship’ which kept me busy and opened up networking opportunities. Not much time to put all that into practice when LLM Reader Ministry began to glow over the horizon. On the 15th June 2013, the sun shone brightly, rays of love hope and joy emanating from all who gathered to celebrate the LLM licensing service in Worcester Cathedral. The day I stepped out to ‘hold the Christlight’ before all whom I was to meet on my journey ahead, fellow pilgrims, fellow travellers.

Looking back, can you pinpoint a moment when your faith journey began? It began I guess way back as I come from a family for whom church was important in their lives. My mother was the verger of our local church, St Chad in Smethwick, no longer standing sadly. Having got fed up of being pregnant she decided to help the baby, me, on its way by scrubbing the chancel steps. It worked but two days later. I have always been a little miffed that I arrived two days after St Chad’s Festival Day. Humour apart, my Faith journey has been a ‘rocky’, ‘pot hole’ filled adventure, kept going by those whom I have met along the way. Those whose Faith was stronger than mine at the time, those who were prepared to share their love of Jesus, reminding me of his love for me, no matter what. Those who were there to weep with me when I was weeping, to hold the Christ light in the night time of my fears, to hold out their hand to speak the peace I longed to hear.

What time in your life was your faith important to you It has always been there, sometimes near and apparent, sometimes in the shadows. But always when the going got tough, when I realised, I was helpless and vulnerable, I would be reminded of 2 Corinthians 5:7, ‘We walk by Faith and not by sight’. A verse given to me by a special friend, as I set out on my teaching career, inscribed inside a copy of ‘The Daily Light. A little book which is never far from my side, lest I forget where my strength comes from.

If you were asked to pick a character in the Bible other than Jesus, who would you pick and why? I would choose Samuel, which happened to be my dad’s name. When I went to Israel in the 80’s I discovered that Samuel in Hebrew is ‘Schmuel’ (God has heard) and I delight in sharing the fact with the Samuels I meet along the way. Samuel’s life serves as an example for us all today. His principles, his obedience to God, his faith and his willingness to intercede for others. He listened as he heard God calling in the night. A story that reminds me of how I was called to Reader ministry. In my teaching career I was able to share my faith with those who hurt, whose lives were heavy burdens. Opportunities to share God’s love, opportunities to share my friend, Jesus.

This is tough I know but can you pick one Bible verse and explain why you would choose that one? As I highlighted before 2 Corinthians 5:7 ‘We walk by faith and not by sight’. My headship was of a Controlled church school in a run down Victorian building, where I spent my first ten years fighting for a new school to be built as our children deserved better facilities. When the new school was finally opened by Bishop Keith of Lichfield, we had 2 Corinthians 5:7 inscribed on our dedication plaque. A reminder to all who entered our school, the importance of our faith. A verse to embrace all faiths.

As Readers we all have different ministries, what part of your ministry do you find most fulfilling. I chose to continue my training by taking up Funeral Ministry which I have found extremely fulfilling. You are invited into a very special place when you answer the call to conduct a funeral for a family, whose loved one has died. It is a privilege to walk beside those who journey through grief, offering, comfort, support and advice.Sharing God’s love and compassion

Prayer. As Readers we encounter a vast array of liturgy. If you could chose one prayer, other than The Lord’s Prayer, what would it be and why? Since becoming a Reader I have trained as a guide for ‘retreats in daily life’, through Manressa Link, an organisation that supports Ignatian spirituality. St Ignatius of Loyola, who founded the Society of Jesus, (The Jesuits) encouraged people to develop an intimate relationship with a God who loves them and desires the best for them. St Ignatius recognised that it is only through letting go that we truly receive.Through his prayer we are asking God’s help in more fully committing our lives to him.A prayer which is a daily challenge.Thank you Pat. Can I offer you another cup of tea and an extra slice?

A Grand Day Out In Malvern The morning was led by the very talented Geoff Weaver, who took us through a wonderful variety of music in a couple of hours and reminded us what a joy it is to sing! After lunch we gathered in Malvern Priory for the Annual Readers service, when one reader was welcomed, having completed his training and another four were welcomed as they were licensed to the Diocese.

Thank you to Malvern for the hospitality and to all who took part in the day - choir, refreshment servers, cake makers, clergy and stewards. It was a grand day out in Malvern.

Prayer of St IgnatiusTeach me good Lord, To serve you as you deserve,To give and not to count the cost,To fight and not to heed the wounds,To toil and not to seek for rest, To labour and to ask for no reward,Except that of knowing that I do your will,Through Jesus Christ my Lord.Amen.
