SERBIA

Serbia has connected West with East for centuries – a land in which civilizations, cultures, faiths, cli-mates and landscapes meet and mingle. It is located in the center of the Balkan Peninsula, in southeastern Europe. The northern portion belongs to central Europe, but in terms of geography and climate it is also partly a Mediterranean country. Serbia is landlocked but as a Danube country it is connected to distant seas and oceans. Serbia is crossroads of Europe and a geopolitically important territory. The international roads and railway lines, which run through the country’s river valleys, form the shortest link between Western Europe and the Middle East. From the agricultural regions of the Pannonian Plain in the north, across the fertile river valleys and orchard-covered hills of Šumadija, the landscape of Serbia continues southward, gradually giving way to mountains rich in canyons, gorges and caves, as well as well-preserved forests. Serbia’s beautiful moun-tains, national parks, rivers and lakes are the perfect location for an active outdoor holiday – from hunting and fishing to extreme sports. Many times during its rich, centuries-long history, Serbia has been at the center of Europe’s and the world’s attention, out of all proportion to its modest size, economic might and number of inhabitants. Many lessons on bravery, patriotism and the struggle for freedom can be learned wherever you turn in Serbia, as you pass through its cities and regions. The cultural and historical heritage of Serbia begins with prehistoric archaeological sites and its legacy from classical antiquity. Perhaps its greatest riches, though, are in the many mediaeval Serbian churches and mon-asteries, some of which are included on the UNESCO World Heritage list. All year round, numerous cultural, entertainment, traditional and sporting events are held in Serbia, demon-strating the creative power and spiritual vitality of this country.Today, Serbia is a modern, democratic European country, on the path to membership of the European Un-ion, which a diverse range of visitors – from young backpackers to participants in congresses and fairs – visit every day.Statistically, the most-visited tourist destinations are the cities of Belgrade and Novi Sad, the mountains of Kopaonik and Zlatibor and the spa towns of Vrnjačka Banja and Sokobanja.

BELGRADE

Belgrade (Serbian: Београд, Beograd) meaning ‘White City’ is the capital of the Republic of Serbia. Vari-ous styles of architecture dominate the city while its recent resurgence as the leading hub in south-eastern Europe makes it a must-see destination.

Belgrade is the capital of Serbia and is, as such, the country’s largest city with a population of about 1.7 mil-lion people. It lies on the confluence of the two major European rivers, Sava and Danube. The city has a long history, dating back to the 4th century BC, when the area was settled by Celtic tribes. Later on, it became the Roman city of Singidunum, and relics of that era can still be seen in the city, particularly at Kalemegdan Fortress. During the Middle Ages the town changed hands between the Kingdom of Hungary and the Ser-bian Despotate (of which it was the capital) until 1521, when it was captured by the Ottoman Empire. Until Serbia retained its independence in 1878, the city again changed hands multiple times, but between the Ot-toman Empire and the Habsburg Empire.

After the First World War, Belgrade became the seat of Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (the King-dom of Yugoslavia, from 1929) until its collapse in 1941, after the subsequent German invasion. During the Second World War it was the seat of the Nazi puppet Government of National Salvation and it was heav-ily bombed twice, once by the Germans and once by the Allies. Belgrade was again liberated by the joint Yugoslav - Soviet Army, and in 1945 it became the capital of communist Yugoslavia (although the country wasn’t part of the Eastern Bloc after the notorious Yugoslav - Soviet split in 1948), led by Marshal Josip Broz Tito until his death in 1980. During this period Belgrade became the economic, cultural and political center of the Balkans, as the country was balancing itself between the East and the West. Finally, in 2006, the city became the capital city of the independent Republic of Serbia. This often violent history and outside influ-ence has colored much of Belgrade’s evolution, which is evident in its culture and architecture. Often caught between the hammer and anvil of clashing empires, the city has taken on a unique character, reminiscent of both Austrian and Turkish influences, with a unique set of Communist elements thrown in by the Marshal Tito Government. Yet, the city has its own spirit, and in it can be found some not only unique features, but also a healthy joie de vivre in its café culture, nightlife and often a Mediterranean flavor in its lifestyle.

Belgrade city core is not too big. Everything between Kalemegdan, Knez Mihajlova street and Skadarska street is best viewed by foot. Accessible from the end of the Knez Mihailova street, it offers beautiful views, especially during sunset. The largest part of is a park, along with the fortress walls, with several cafes, tennis and basketball courts, museums and an observatory. Don’t forget to take a look at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, and the statue of Po-bednik (Winner), one of the symbols of Belgrade.Take tram number 2 from the railway sta-tion and disembark at the 4th stop (Kalemdag)to avoid the walking uphill.

Live bands playing old Belgrade music can be heard here in the evenings. The street is paved in cobblestone so high heels are not advised. Blank-walled buildings on the south side have been painted with impressive ‘trompe-l’oeil’ paintings to add to the atmosphere.Srpskih vladara (Kralja Milana) street, connecting Belgrade Fortress, Knez Mihailova street and Republic Square with Slavija Square and The Temple of Saint Sava dominate the view as you walk towards it. Notice Terazije Fountain, Hotel Moskva (Former Palace of Russia), The Old Royal Palace, following the New Pal-ace, and theater Jugoslovensko Dramsko Pozorište, as you wander around.

Holy placesSaint Sava Temple is the largest Orthodox church in Serbia, and one of the biggest Orthodox churches in the whole world. In 1594, Turkish vizier Sinan-pasa burned the holy relics of Saint Sava (1174-1236), founder of the autocephalous Serbian Orthodox Church, on the spot where the temple is located today, in retalia-tion for the rebellion of the Ser-bian people. Since then, the Serbs wished to erect a church in honor of Saint Sava at this location, and have first built a smaller church next to the place of the burning of the relics (this church also still stands, and is located to the left of the main entrance to the big temple). The temple was built from 1935 in several phases

- interrupted first in 1941 by WWII, and later by Communist authorities, the work was

only resumed in 1985. Interior deco-ration is not yet finished, however

visitors have access to the north aisle which is complete and in use. From the quality of the marble and plaster work already in place, it will be stupendous when it is finished. The underground crypt, future burial site of Serbian

patriarchs, dedicated to Saint Lazarus of Serbia, is also nearly

completed. It is located near Slavija square, easily accessed from Bulevar

Oslobodjenja, and visible from most points of the city. Due to its impressive size,

it is often called a cathedral.

Parking zones

Parking areas on the streets in the center of Belgrade (within the number 2 circular tram route) are divided into three parking zones where parking time is limited and payment is made for each full or incomplete hour:- Red zone - maximum 1 hour- Yellow zone - maximum 2 hours- Green zone - maximum 3 hoursParking areas within these three parking zones are indicated by special traffic signs bearing the color of the zone as well as by road markings. Parking is payable in all three zones on week days from 07.00-21.00 and Saturdays from 07.00 and 14.00. Once the allowed time has expired, the driver must move his or her vehicle. A parking warden will leave a fine payment order under the windscreen wipers if he should fail to do so.Payment methods for parking in the three zones are:- Parking tickets - these are purchased at kiosks and other points of sale. The time of arrival should be writ-ten on the ticket and it should be displayed on the inside of the windscreen.- Parking ticket machines (only in the red zone) - machines selling parking tickets take coins and electronic parking cards- Mobile phone - by sending an SMS containing the registration number of the vehicle (for example BG123456, without spaces) to 9111, 9112 or 9113 (depending on the zone), from any mobile network.Confirmation that payment has been made by SMS will arrive in the form of a return SMS to the users mo-bile, detailing the parking service they have paid for. The user must keep the return SMS as proof that they have paid to park in the event that they are erroneously issued a fine. Should the user not receive a return message confirming payment for parking within two minutes, SMS payment for parking has failed and they will not be charged for the service. The user may obtain information about the status of currently paid park-ing in a zone by sending an SMS with a “?” in the text to the number for that zone. A reminder of the expiry of the parking period will arrive five to 10 minutes before expiry in the form of an SMS message sent to the user’s mobile phone. The user may extend the parking period for an additional hour by sending an SMS message containing the same registration number or just a “*” to the same parking zone number.

SAFETY

Overall, Belgrade is safe city, but like anywhere, you should always keep money, mobile phones, travel documents and other valuable personal items in secure places. Pickpockets are known to operate in public transportation, and other crowded places so never wear a backpack or purse on your back and make sure that you have your wallet in one of your front pockets. Traffic laws are usually observed although nervous drivers can change lanes suddenly or make dangerous turns when avoiding traffic during rush hour. The taxi drivers are notorious for swerving in and out of lanes. Pay close attention to the traffic signals as a pedes-trian. Also try to avoid getting into conflicts. If you are staying out late in a bar or a club, there is a small chance that someone will try to pick a fight especially if you are in a group and a single guy is showing hostility. That is not because you are a foreigner, anyone can be a target. Just ignore them and walk away no matter what they say or do. The chances that this will happen are very low, but stay alert.

ESN - ERASMUS STUDENT NETWORK

Erasmus Student Network Serbia is a non-governmental organization, a part of Erasmus Student Network, the biggest student association in Europe which is present in more than 40 countries. At the moment, ESN Serbia itself unites 3 sections from the largest cities in the country: Belgrade, Novi Sad, and Niš.

ESN Serbia is run by the National Board, which consists of six voluntary positions - President, Vice President, National Representative, Treasurer, Communications Manager, and National Project Coordinator, whose work is supported by the National Web Master and the National Communication Committee.

The sections meet twice a year for National Platforms, where their members meet ESNers from all over the country, share best practices, vote on new policies and the new National Board, as well as take part in work-shops where they develop their soft skills.

ESN Serbia is regularly represented at the various international meetings and conferences of ESN by the National Board and/or section representatives, as well as conferences in Serbia.

Note that, depending on the ESN country, the Bud-dies are marked as “Student Mentors” or “Tandem Partners”. As far as Serbia is concerned, we are using the most widespread term “Buddy”. Having a personal Buddy is the best way to integrate into the local com-munity at the beginning of your stay in a new country. But that is not all... Besides having a buddy to support you during your stay in Serbia, you can also enjoy various discounts by getting an ESNcard. Our international, national and local partners are there to provide you with products and services at very affordable prices. Contact the local ESN section for more information on how to get the benefits of the ESNcard.
